Chapter 112: Under Attack

~6 min read 1,145 words

At the Level 65, Fourth-Class Freight Track Terminal of Underground City 9, on the “Infinity,” Chen Sixuan and Shasha anxiously awaited news from Lin Xian and Kiki.

Being underground, combined with the recent earthquake, created a suffocating sense of oppression.

They had assumed this place was the final gathering point of civilization’s survivors, where Kiki’s identity could be leveraged to achieve certain goals—only to find a graveyard of the apocalypse.

Even from Zhao Yan and Xu Wen, they could sense the chilling sorrow of hundreds of thousands of unresolved spirits; despair spread endlessly through the deep underground.

Ding ding ding~

Shasha sat at the table, observing the Hell Black Chrysanthemum inside the plant cultivation chamber, her eyes filled with curiosity.

After crying bitterly and eating something, Zhao Yan and Xu Wen’s emotions had stabilized somewhat; they sat in the corner, beginning to observe the train’s interior, encased in steel armor.

“Where did you come from? Are you heading to Yubei?”

Shasha glanced back at them without speaking.

Seeing Shasha remain silent, Zhao Yan stopped trying to engage and began whispering to Xu Wen.

Nearby, Da Lou held a gun, watching the group, his attention constantly on the situation outside the train.

In the cockpit, Chen Sixuan waited beside the intercom; Ding Junyi had just eaten something and stood beside her.

“Miss Ding,” Chen Sixuan looked at the cold-eyed woman and asked, “Where did all the living people in this underground city relocate to?”

Ding Junyi’s gaze shifted slightly, and she replied seriously:

“The relocation plan was to move to other underground cities, but we received no specific destination. Of course, I don’t know whether those people successfully transferred.”

“Are there any other survivors here besides you?”

Ding Junyi nodded. “Statistically speaking, there might be some, but survival odds are low. The entire underground city’s one primary energy core and two backup cores are now destroyed; only the No. 3 backup core on Level 75 remains active. After the city sealed, we connected to this backup core for power. No other users have appeared in the subsystem, and surveillance found no unmutated survivors.”

Chen Sixuan fell momentarily silent, unable to suppress a sigh—this vast underground city had once been the hope of countless lives, yet overnight became a terrifying pit burying 370,000 people.

Not to mention the countless refugees she’d seen on the snowfield when they arrived…

Di di.

At that moment, a mechanical voice sounded. As Ding Junyi assumed it was the intercom, Chen Sixuan suddenly stood up, grabbed her arm, and signaled for silence.

Chen Sixuan pointed to the train’s radar: something was approaching through the darkness ahead.

Since the Infinity entered from the surface, its front faced away from the exit tunnel, while the cockpit faced downward into the tunnel.

Chen Sixuan wondered if Lin Xian and the others had climbed up along the tracks—but then recalled they’d just been descending from the tunnel entrance on Level 89, and had yet to report in; how could they suddenly appear on Level 65?

Chen Sixuan’s action made Ding Junyi instantly alert; so too did Shasha in Car 1 and Da Lou, who all grew wary.

Zhao Yan and Xu Wen instinctively looked toward the group, fear rising: “What’s wrong? Did they come back?”

“Shh!”

Shasha signaled for quiet, stood up, and was about to open the blackout panel when a thunderous crash erupted from one side of the train.

Dong!

As if something had suddenly slammed into it from the darkness.

“Ahh!!” The sudden noise made Zhao Yan and Xu Wen scream. Shasha immediately pulled open the blackout panel; the orange-yellow interior light revealed a blood-red mummy, which lunged and crashed against the train’s armored plating. Bang!

The violent sound echoed across the entire freight terminal, piercingly loud.

“What is that?!”

“It’s a Human Ghoul!” Da Lou’s expression turned grim—he’d just chopped one of these not long ago. Though this one looked slightly different, it was clearly no ordinary zombie; it was definitely the kind Ding Junyi had described.

In the cockpit, Chen Sixuan noticed the situation in Car 1 and prepared to rush over when another faint sound came from the train’s front—something was climbing up.

Ehhhh!~

Ding Junyi’s face darkened; she and Chen Sixuan both stepped back.

A low growl echoed as several bizarre tentacles slowly emerged, crawling across the armored grating on the cockpit windshield. The tentacles were blood-red, oozing brown slime; a human hand gripped one, and within the tentacles, a ring of sharp teeth and mouthparts could be glimpsed.

“This is also a Human Ghoul!” Ding Junyi frowned, looking at Chen Sixuan: “Should we activate a defense mechanism or counterattack?”

Chen Sixuan stared wide-eyed at the grotesque creature outside, took a deep breath, and said:

“No! They can’t get in!”

Dong dong dong!!!

More and more noises erupted around the rear cars—some from the sides, others climbing onto the roof.

!

Ehhhh!!

On the dark platform, countless strange creatures, drawn by the noise, surrounded the train: zombies and Human Ghouls closed in.

In Car 1, screams rose in waves. Shasha marched up to Zhao Yan and Xu Wen and snapped: “I told you not to scream—keep it up and I’ll throw you off.”

Zhao Yan flinched, startled by how vicious this girl, seemingly only ten or so, sounded. She looked up and saw Da Lou approaching, radiating lethal intent; convinced he’d really toss them out, she clutched Xu Wen tightly, clamping her hand over her mouth, too terrified to scream again.

“Sister Chen, any news from Brother Lin?”

Shasha called toward the cockpit.

Chen Sixuan shook her head. Around her, attacks and impacts rang from all directions; black monstrous insects crawled up onto the roof from outside the windows.

Aah!!

A female ghoul let out a piercing shriek, darting at lightning speed toward the cockpit door, clawing frantically at it with blood-smeared hands. The entire train was now encircled by monsters, their cacophony reverberating through the cars.

Ding Junyi stared around in shock—the train’s armor was far tougher than she’d expected. She still vividly recalled how the female ghoul had burst from the dark and killed Professor Han—but such creatures seemed unable to damage the train’s plating; it was nearly as resilient as a military tank.

Di di.

At that moment, the intercom crackled. Chen Sixuan quickly pressed the button—Lin Xian’s voice finally returned.

“Teacher Chen, we found the locomotive.”

“That’s great! How’s your situation now?” Chen Sixuan asked urgently.

“It’s… complicated. What’s your situation?” Lin Xian heard the violent commotion on the train and asked immediately.

“We’re surrounded by many zombies and Human Ghouls—don’t know if any Weird Bodies are here,” Chen Sixuan forced calm into her voice, glancing at the roof and car sides: “But don’t worry—things should be fine here.”
