Chapter 146: Gate (Requesting Monthly Votes!)
Everyone armed and ready, began deploying to defend the airport.
Doo-doo wu-wu!!!
The fire of the 1130 close-in weapon system lit the sky; above, the massive jellyfish silhouette slowly unfurled its bell as it drew near, and the mountains of zombies atop the high wall began climbing upward in relentless waves.
Swoosh! swoosh!
Pre-loaded missiles slammed into the towering, bizarre creatures among the zombie horde—humanoid giants, black centipedes crawling up the rails, and other strange lifeforms Lu Xian had never seen—emerging constantly through the city’s alleys; these aberrations attacked friend and foe alike, devouring zombies as they surged toward the airport.
The airport’s floodlights seemed to instill slight fear in these aberrations; they hid in shadows and darkness, or suddenly scaled the high walls, claiming the lives of several soldiers, then retreated and lay dormant under overwhelming firepower.
Boom! boom! boom!!
With more survivors and psychics joining the line, the pressure on the Taitiewei defenders eased somewhat.
“Don’t you feel like there are just too many zombies and aberrations in this city?”
Lin Xian and the others sat aboard the airport shuttle, speeding toward Gate A.
Kiki frowned at the blazing high wall defense line: “It feels like those monsters got some kind of alert—every single one rushed over.”
“Maybe they have a zombie leader directing them to attack us on purpose,” Lu Xingchen’s imagination always ran wild.
“Didn’t we just say that the corpse-driver might be exactly what you described?”
Jiang Yun replied.
“By the way,” Lin Xian asked Jiang Yun, who sat ahead, “I heard you encountered the Black Crow Quartet—how did you end up with the Emergency Team?”
Jiang Yun, wearing sunglasses, turned his head.
“My team and the Bearded Man convoy encountered that giant atmospheric jellyfish at Ping’a Lake—ironically, the Taitiewei were there too…”
Lin Xian remembered something: “A few hours ago, we and Shu Qin and Xu Jin eliminated the Black Crow Quartet.”
“Really? Good work—I owe you one.”
Jiang Yun smiled faintly, his expression somber, and murmured, “This journey is full of danger—not everyone is lucky.”
…
Lin Xian said nothing, recalling how close Jiang Yun had been to his young subordinate; he couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.
Beside him, Shasha was feverishly stuffing grenades into her grenade launcher, her back laden with a massive backpack filled entirely with ammunition Lin Xian had prepared for her.
Lin Xian had originally built her a reinforced bulletproof backpack for the ammo—but it was too heavy; the girl couldn’t even stand straight carrying it…
So he planned to design a custom exosuit for her once he could manufacture armor; Shasha had no psychic ability, was still young, and often accompanied him into battle—he couldn’t help but worry, though thankfully Big Building was always nearby to watch over her.
Wei Kexue, a lean middle-aged man, had been hunched over his computer the whole time; now he spoke urgently:
“This isn’t good—those monsters are smart. They’re all converging on Gate A.”
His words echoed Lu Xingchen’s earlier joke, making them sound eerily prophetic.
Bang! bang! bang!!
Boom! boom! boom!!!
The deafening roar of gunfire and artillery intensified as several shuttles neared Gate A, on the verge of collapse.
Hundreds of Taitiewei soldiers formed a tight perimeter; the massive heavy gate had been pried open a two-meter gap, and countless zombies poured through it. Machine guns and artillery on the high wall rained fire outward at the larger aberrations, and more zombie corpses piled up, gradually blocking the gate.
“Big Building, Shasha—you handle long-range suppression. Kiki and you, Mr. Lu—clear the path for me!”
Even before arriving, Lin Xian began issuing orders.
“If we don’t close this gate, this momentum can’t be stopped,” Jiang Yun said gravely. “Lin Captain, let me clear a path for you first.”
He pulled out his radio: “Huiyan!”
“Coming!” The roar of a motorcycle engine rapidly approached; the woman from Jiang Yun’s team, clad in leather, suddenly surged forward from behind. Zing! zing! zing! Three small guided missiles launched from her bike, exploding violently against the clogged gate gap. Then, Ren Huiyan reached out into empty air—as if grasping an invisible object—and hurled it toward the gate!
Booom!!
A powerful pressure wave erupted, instantly blasting apart countless chunks of flesh and bone.
“We’ve got the outside!” Jiang Yun adjusted his sunglasses, nodded to Lin Xian, then leapt off the shuttle. A hurricane surged around him—he rose into the air.
“Wind affinity!” Lu Xingchen’s eyes gleamed. “Excellent! The new world really does produce talent—this ability fuels my flames perfectly!”
“Are you in love with him?” Kiki rolled her eyes. “Nonsense. In life, true companions are rare…”
“Lu Xingchen!” Lin Xian cut him off, pointing at the high wall. “Get up there. Burn as much as you can.”
“As you wish!”
The priority was pressure relief—if more zombies kept pouring in, the gate wouldn’t just stay open—it might be torn completely apart, and then it could never be closed again.
“Two gate power units are damaged—one cable is jammed!” Wei Kexue said urgently, still glued to his computer.
“I know. Shut down and reboot all gate power units.”
“What?! If you shut them down, the gate will be crushed open immediately!!”
“It won’t.”
The shuttle stopped. Everyone disembarked. Lin Xian pointed to Kiki and Lu Xingchen beside him: “Wait for the right moment—give them a few seconds.”
“I—I understand!” Wei Kexue, pale and trembling, nodded frantically.
!
Kiki clapped her hands, her eyes glinting; she slowly rose into the air.
Many survivors and Taitiewei soldiers nearby were stunned.
What’s going on today? Why are so many psychics flying?
Squeeeee!
A red centipede, braving a storm of bullets, shoved a segment through the gate gap; its countless legs writhed out, making viewers’ scalps crawl.
Kiki and Lin Xian, seeing the giant worm, finally realized the aberrations weren’t just one—among the zombie horde, they now spotted several figures of the white giant as well.
“It’s that thing again!”
Kiki’s fury flared at the red worm; she raised her hand, used her ability, and seized the giant creature, then twisted her wrist.
A tremendous rotational force twisted the red centipede like a pretzel.
Squeeeerk!!
The giant worm opened its mouth, emitting a piercing shriek; below, Lu Xingchen, standing closest, nearly had his eardrums burst.
He raised his hand—a thin column of white flame shot straight into the worm’s mouth, triggering extreme heat; thick black smoke billowed, and within moments, its abdomen was charred, silenced forever.
Just then, another crimson humanoid skull erupted from the zombie horde, opened its jaws, and blasted a torrent of flame toward the entrenched Taitiewei soldiers!
Watch out for the monster's flame burst!
A soldier shouted a warning—but the next instant, a massive wave of fire and blood swallowed over a dozen soldiers and survivors.
“Aaaah!!”
Screams rose in chorus; foul-smelling smoke spewed outward.
Taptaptap!
A Taitiewei-3 mech charged forward, enduring the flames, its cannon unleashing a storm of metal that shredded half the humanoid skull’s body.
Squeeeerk!!
Before anyone could recover from the attack, two long red tendrils rose from the high wall—another giant red centipede, hundreds of legs writhing, suddenly charged into the defense line, carving a bloody path.
Taptaptaptap!!!
Taitiewei soldiers fired wildly: “Watch out!!”
“It’s an aberration!”
Boom!
A massive wind blade slashed through, severing half the red centipede; its upper body tumbled down.
Jiang Yun’s gaze sharpened. “There’s more than one—look below!”
“Monster’s firing again—everyone take cover!” The half-destroyed humanoid skull, now crawling through the gate gap, lifted its skull head, preparing to blast another flame into the hail of bullets.
Taitiewei soldiers retreated en masse, bullets hammering the skull—but its mouth glowed brighter red, and it kept firing!
Lu Xingchen watched this, his aura surging.
“Damn it! Daring to spit fire before the God of Fire!”
