Chapter 152: Evolution 2
Yubei City No. 1 Airport, battle raging!
Outside every gate and high wall, countless night monsters and zombies surged in, as if the entire city had emptied out, all rushing toward this last remaining airport.
Whirr! Boom!
Several blinding blue beams pierced the night, shooting high above the airport; over a dozen massive sky jellyfish drifted in, and as anti-air weapons roared, countless tentacles rained down—some landing among the survivors' convoy, causing heavy casualties.
"It's over… we can't hold them." A survivor wept in despair.
"The lift hasn't been repaired—do we have any other place to escape to?"
"Run, now!!"
"Running anywhere means death—fight them! Hold the line!!"
"Has anyone seen my son? Please, anyone—has anyone seen my son?!"
The square was in chaos; children huddled on vehicles, sobbing, while many grabbed their last weapons and charged the frontline.
Taptaptap! Taptaptap!
Boom!
In Area A, Lou Shasha trembled, frantically pulling grenades from her backpack and loading them onto her gun—this was her first time facing such a terrifying zombie siege; her lips were pale, yet she kept firing nonstop toward the accumulating horde.
High above, fierce winds howled; Jiang Yun summoned a small-scale hurricane toward the sky jellyfish, forming a wall of wind to block the aerial monsters from entering the port.
"Divine·Fire Gun!"
Lu Xingchen formed a sword finger with both hands, continuously spewing white flames that pierced a tentacled human demon, igniting a roaring fire atop the high wall.
Taptaptap!
Da Lou's M556 light machine gun had emptied its last round; after clearing the magazine, he pulled his steel-cutting greatsword from his back and hurled it with all his strength!
Swish!
The heavy steel blade shot like a meteor, piercing straight through a black insect that had lunged at Shasha, pinning it to the wall. Da Lou charged forward, stomped on its head, crushing it, then yanked the sword free and held it horizontally across Shasha's front.
"Brother, be careful!"
Shasha warned.
With no ranged weapons left, danger intensified; Shasha hid behind Da Lou, continuously firing grenades.
Boom! Boom!
"B-grade demon detected!" shouted a Taitiewei communications soldier—no sooner had he spoken than a spider leg descended from above, piercing him straight through the skull.
"It's a Mist Spider!"
Taptaptap! Artillery fired in unison.
The Mist Spider, shrouded in thick mist, appeared silently atop the high wall.
"Ahh!"
Da Lou roared, charging forward with his greatsword, slashing twice—severing two of the Mist Spider's walking legs. Boom! Lou Shasha launched a grenade into its mist-shrouded torso, perfectly coordinated with her brother; the Mist Spider staggered and collapsed, revealing its terrifying blue form through the mist.
Tsuu!
A transparent spear shot out, piercing straight through the Mist Spider's abdomen, spilling its internal organs.
Ren Huiyan shouted sharply: "The Mist Spider isn't B-grade—stay alert!"
No sooner had she spoken than a black silhouette, thick with tentacles, appeared instantly on the high wall; a slimy, dripping sound echoed as five long, brown-red limbs—like giant insect legs—shot out from the mist.
One soldier on the wall, caught off guard, was pierced repeatedly, skewered like meat on a stick—five men lifted into the air, screaming in agony.
One of the limbs swept across, sweeping away Lu Xingchen and a whole group of people in a single blow.
Seeing this, Lou Shasha's eyes widened; she frantically reloaded, but her small backpack full of grenades slipped from her hands and spilled onto the ground—she scrambled down to pick them up.
Whoosh~
Two more tentacles extended—one reaching upward, aiming to impale Jiang Yun in midair; the other shot straight toward Lou Shasha.
This demon's attacks targeted only the most threatening individuals—and it had been hiding within the Mist Spider's mist!
Jiang Yun, watching from above, turned cold; facing the incoming tentacle, he kicked out sharply—a silver-white wind blade sliced precisely through it, as he shouted:
"Huiyan, protect Shasha!"
Ding!
The wind blade struck the insect leg with a metallic clang; countless fine hairs were severed, but the limb—though seemingly soft—proved harder than the shell of the red giant insect; Jiang Yun's blade only sliced off chunks of flesh, failing to sever it.
Below, Ren Huiyan's eyes flashed urgently; two transparent spears shot out, slamming into the tentacle aimed at Shasha—the air exploded, yet failed to halt its advance.
"Damn it!"
"Ahh!" Lou Shasha had just picked up a pile of grenades when she saw the tentacle hurtling through the mist toward her—her expression froze, pupils shrinking in terror—Puch!
At that moment, a towering figure suddenly appeared before her—his chest pierced clean through by the tentacle.
"Brother!"
Lou Shasha screamed, dropping her grenades.
Da Lou gripped the tentacle tightly with both hands, trying to hold it back, but its immense force pushed him relentlessly backward toward Shasha.
"Hah!" Blood sprayed from Da Lou's chest, staining his hands crimson; blood dripped from his mouth and nostrils, yet he gritted his teeth, clamped the tentacle tighter, then lowered his stance, braced hard, and yanked backward with all his strength.
The tentacle monster was violently yanked from the mist—suddenly, a massive demon, resembling an alien leech, appeared before them, its entire body writhing with countless tentacles, radiating immense force!
"Die!!"
Seeing his comrade struck, Lu Xingchen lost his earlier frenzied expression—his face darkened, eyes blazing with murderous intent; he stomped on flame and leapt into the air, summoning a pillar of fire that crashed down from above.
"Divine·Setting Sun Flame!"
Boom!
The erupting flames instantly illuminated the entire Area A square, engulfing the tentacle monster in a towering inferno.
!
Jijiji!!
The tentacle monster shrieked in agony, flailing its limbs, flinging ammunition crates and cars into the air, thrashing wildly to break free of the flames and charge the crowd.
But one of its limbs was still clamped tightly by Da Lou—and now a small tornado wrapped the flames around it, trapping it.
Jiang Yun!
The wind intensified the fire's burn; intense heat radiated outward, forcing everyone to stagger back.
"Aaaaaa!!"
Da Lou spat blood, gripping the monster tightly, holding it captive in the flaming vortex; within moments, a foul stench of burning flesh filled the air. Soon, the tentacle monster's body stiffened, turned blackened, its thrashing slowed, and then it fell still.
Puch.
Da Lou yanked hard, tearing the sharp, long tentacle from his chest cavity—a wave of intense bloodlust and life-draining sensation surged through him; he collapsed to his knees, spewing blood.
"Brother!!" Lou Shasha lunged forward, face pale with terror, voice trembling with sobs: "Brother, how are you? Are you in pain?!"
Gurgg…
Da Lou opened his mouth, filled with blood foam, staring at her with helpless defiance: "Shasha… brother… I…"
Shasha, terrified, screamed: "Brother, no! Don't die! Please, don't! Waaahhh…"
Jiang Yun, Ren Huiyan, and Lu Xingchen rushed over, watching the scene with heavy expressions.
A chest piercing—this fatal wound was nearly impossible to survive.
Too many had died tonight; facing death, everyone now felt numb.
Lu Xingchen's face twisted with guilt—he'd been entrusted by Lin Xian to protect his teammates, yet this was the result.
He'd wandered half of Tianhai Province alone, afraid to truly bond with fellow travelers, because he feared nothing more than witnessing this very scene.
Just as he was consumed by self-reproach, his peripheral vision caught it—Da Lou's muscles and veins were slowly glowing crimson, blood qi gathering rapidly across his body, even the black smoke from the burned monster being drawn inward.
"He… he!"
Lu Xingchen's face changed instantly—he cried out: "Shasha, step back! Your brother's ability… it's evolving!!"
