Chapter 32: Misty Station
The "Infinite" raced through a range of mountains, and before long, the once-expanding view was swallowed by a thick white fog.
Inside the cab, Chen Sixuan watched the traffic radar while furrowing her brow.
"Even after snowfall, this much fog? Something’s off..."
"It’s a good thing, though."
Lin Xian stared ahead at the fog. "With this train entering the city, it would’ve drawn plenty of survivors’ attention—this fog saves us a lot of trouble."
Chen Sixuan glanced uneasily toward Car 3, where Kiki was excitedly tuning up her motorcycle.
"Do you trust her?"
Compared to Lin Xian and Chen Sixuan’s relationship, Kiki was an unexpected guest; both could clearly sense a layer of impenetrable pretense on the girl, so Chen Sixuan treated almost everything she said with skepticism.
Lin Xian’s expression remained calm. "She’s smart. She knows this train can’t move without me. Unless she has a better survival strategy, cooperating with us is her best chance to live."
Hearing this, Chen Sixuan nodded slightly, about to speak—when Lin Xian suddenly pulled her waist close and kissed her lips hard. She instantly blushed, heart racing. "Ah! What are you doing?" she whispered, flustered.
"Chen Laoshi," Lin Xian said, gazing at her with clear admiration. "I’m glad you were there last night."
Held in his arms, Chen Sixuan said nothing aloud, but joy spread through her heart.
Though outwardly not forceful, she had always been a strong-willed woman since childhood, refusing to be treated as a decorative object. In this moment of life and death, hearing Lin Xian acknowledge her gave her a deep sense of being truly seen.
"Don’t underestimate me—I’m still your teacher, after all..."
Her tone carried a playful edge, but she immediately realized how ambiguous it sounded given their current relationship, and her face flushed slightly.
Lin Xian smiled faintly. "True. They say teachers are life’s navigators—and now, you truly are this train’s navigator."
Clank. Clank.
The train passed through the switch and began slowly entering a fog-choked platform. Visibility was barely a few meters. To avoid colliding with other trains parked on the platform, Chen Sixuan immediately pulled the brake valve.
"You still want me to guard the train?"
Lin Xian nodded. "Yes. Right now, there’s no better way to protect yourself. I feel safer knowing you’re up here."
Though it meant losing one more ally for scavenging, all his belongings were on the "Infinite"—he couldn’t possibly leave it unattended.
And Chen Sixuan was just a weak woman, with no abilities or weapons—guarding the train was the best choice.
Chen Sixuan nodded. "Mm. Don’t worry—I won’t open the door for anyone."
Lin Xian looked at her. "If there’s an emergency, you can start the train from the electric locomotive’s cab. I taught you that before, right?"
At the same time, he pulled out a white remote. "This is the electric locomotive’s emergency brake. In a critical moment, you can use it to start the train or activate the reserve power for braking."
"Ah, this..."
Chen Sixuan’s expression startled, disbelief flickering—she couldn’t believe Lin Xian was letting her drive. Warmth surged in her chest. She knew this was his trust in her, and without hesitation, she took it, gazing at him firmly.
"Alright. I understand."
After briefing Chen Sixuan, Lin Xian checked the time: 16:50. Two hours remained until nightfall. He hurried to Car 3.
Kiki was already mounted on the motorcycle, wearing the windproof goggles Lin Xian had prepared for her. Her long legs swung gracefully over the seat, foot on the clutch—she moved with practiced ease, embodying the image of a sexy biker girl. "Finally! This train doesn’t have much fuel left."
Lin Xian sheathed his short knife behind him, activated his ability, and slowly lowered the rear ramp. He walked over to the motorcycle, glanced at Kiki’s slender waist and long legs, and frowned slightly.
"With this much fog, don’t ride too fast."
"Ugh, stop nagging!" Kiki slapped the backseat impatiently. "Get on!"
Lin Xian sighed, climbed onto the back, hesitating where to hold—when Kiki grabbed his hand and placed it firmly around her waist. "You were so harsh kicking me off yesterday—now you’re acting shy about holding my waist? Hmph. Hypocrite!"
Lin Xian: "... "
Outside, the temperature had dropped below zero, yet Kiki wore only short shorts and a cropped top—her thickest layer was just a baseball jacket.
Lin Xian’s hands gripped her waist, feeling her smooth, supple skin—pleasant to the touch, yet icy cold. He couldn’t help saying:
"Aren’t you cold dressed like this?"
"Do I have other clothes to wear??"
She shot him a glare, started the engine, shifted gears, released the brake—and the motorcycle roared forward.
Meanwhile, Chen Sixuan, guarding the train, quickly retracted the hydraulic ramp, lowered all the sunshades, and turned off the interior lights. The entire train vanished like a ghost in the fog.
Whoosh~ Whoosh~
The motorcycle’s white headlights pierced the fog ahead, entering a road leading into the city.
!
Amid the fog, silence reigned—only the motorcycle’s engine roared, drawing distant moans of approaching zombies.
Both sides of the road were littered with abandoned cars. Thin layers of snow covered trash everywhere. Lin Xian felt the biting wind, his worries deepening.
Passenger cars had heating systems, but the "Infinite"’s were decades old—he’d never turned them on. Repairing or installing new heating would be a major undertaking.
And activating heating would drain even more electricity.
Last night’s battle—if not for the reserve power of the Huanxing 7F electric locomotive, Lin Xian’s stamina could never have sustained both the fight against the giant worm and the 300–400 km escape.
So the extreme cold posed far greater problems than he’d imagined.
Kiki had mounted her phone on the handlebars, displaying a pre-set map. Though navigation was gone, she seemed to have memorized the route perfectly, cutting swiftly through the fog.
Sitting behind, Lin Xian grew curious. "How come you act like you’ve been here before?"
"Pfft, I’ve got a great sense of direction. This place has only a few streets—how complicated could it be? Hold on tight!"
As she spoke, she twisted the throttle—speeding up again. But just a few hundred meters ahead, Kiki slammed on the brakes!
Squeeeech!
The screech of tires echoed down the street, followed by a chorus of approaching zombie moans.
"What’s wrong?" Lin Xian asked.
Kiki frowned at the fog ahead, speaking slowly:
"Something’s up ahead!"
