Chapter 35: Survivor Camp
“Hmph!” Qian Yu let out a cold snort, immediately pulling out his pistol and aiming it at Lou Shasha’s head. “If this were anywhere else, I’d let you all die. But now we’re all stuck here—our lives are on the same boat. If you bring trouble down on us, I’ll kill you two siblings first!”
At that moment, Lou Hua—who had remained silent until now—suddenly reached out and grabbed Qian Yu’s wrist. Instantly, all his men raised their guns at Lou Hua, but Lou Hua merely slowly pulled Qian Yu’s wrist downward, pinning his finger away from the trigger.
“You! Let go!”
Qian Yu stared at him in shock, struggling to wrench his hand free, only to find Lou Hua’s strength astonishingly immense.
“Brother!” Lou Shasha cried out, her face filled with worry—clearly, the siblings didn’t want to clash with these people.
Hearing his sister speak, Lou Hua finally released Qian Yu’s wrist, then continued to gaze at him with calm, unreadable eyes.
Qian Yu gritted his teeth, shaking his aching hand, his cold gaze sweeping over the two. He was about to lash out when he suddenly spotted Lin Xian and Kiki in the vehicle.
“Who the hell are these two?”
“Just like us—unlucky fools who got trapped here,” Lou Shasha said.
Qian Yu’s expression shifted slightly; he glanced briefly at Kiki, snorted, then turned and led his men away.
“Eagle, take a few more men and keep a close watch on those siblings.”
On the way back, Qian Yu gave his orders in a cold tone.
“Boss, that Lou Hua’s an adept, sure, but he’s not bulletproof. We can take him out anytime we want,” said the scar-faced middle-aged man, walking beside Qian Yu with casual indifference.
“No need.”
Qian Yu’s expression darkened. “If we’re preparing to break through, we might still need him.”
Qian Yu wasn’t stupid. An adept’s combat power wasn’t something ordinary men could match. Though he couldn’t recruit Lou Hua, now that they were trapped in the mist, he welcomed any capable adept as cannon fodder—it gave him more chances to survive.
The modified pickup slowly drove into the square and parked in a corner. Many other survivor convoys cast strange glances—most fixed on Lin Xian and Kiki, the two new faces besides the siblings.
Besides Qian Yu’s Black Cobra convoy and Lou Hua’s single vehicle, over a dozen other survivor convoys were stranded here.
Most had fled from nearby cities, ranging from a few individuals to over twenty people, but none were as heavily armed as the Black Cobra convoy—most carried only a handful of firearms.
These convoys clustered in different zones; children and women mostly stayed inside their vehicles, while men stood guard around them.
“There were more people when we first arrived two days ago, but yesterday everyone tried charging toward the city exit together—dozens died, so we had to retreat.”
Lou Shasha jumped out of the vehicle, tossed two cans to Lin Xian, then said to him:
“You’ve got an ability, my brother does too—if we cooperate, maybe we can try breaking out…”
Lin Xian and Kiki both looked at the towering man behind Lou Shasha. To be fair, the height and build difference between the siblings was… striking.
Lou Shasha was like a fawn; her brother Lou Hua was as massive as a bear.
“Unlikely,” Lin Xian said seriously. “We barely managed that spider today. If there are more monsters, I don’t think we stand a chance.”
Looking around, the square held at least two or three hundred people. Qian Yu’s Black Cobra convoy was well-armed, and combined with the other convoys, they had at least seventy to eighty rifles and pistols. If such firepower couldn’t break out—and had already cost dozens of lives—adding just Lin Xian and Kiki sounded far from enough.
Kiki opened the rear hatch and climbed up, swinging her legs as she stared at the thick fog overhead, impatiently muttering, “What the hell is this damn fog?”
“Who knows? It hasn’t shown any sign of clearing for days,” Lou Shasha said, sounding hopeless.
“So what do we do now?”
Lou Shasha nodded toward the center of the square, where Qian Yu was discussing something with leaders of several other convoys.
“I think we’ll still have to charge. If we don’t get out before the Eternal Night, we’re dead.”
Time passed. Lin Xian checked his watch—it was 18:05. Only forty minutes remained until dark.
But he thought about it—this situation didn’t seem much different from after dark.
“After dark, will those monsters attack on their own?” Lin Xian asked Lou Shasha.
“Yes,” Lou Shasha nodded. “Loud noises attract those undead. But those big ones… haven’t shown up yet…”
At that moment, the distant roar of multiple vehicles and gunfire shattered the camp’s silence. Everyone sprang to their feet; men raised their weapons, ready for battle.
“What’s that noise?!” “Over there!”
“Watch out!”
“Another convoy?”
People murmured. Lin Xian and Lou Shasha tensed. “Let’s go!” Lou Shasha grabbed her grenade launcher and ran over; her brother Lou Hua pulled a rifle from the driver’s cabin and followed, slinging it over his shoulder.
Lin Xian and Kiki cautiously followed.
Down the street to the northwest, thick mist rolled as moans and gunfire drew closer. Dozens in the square spread out, raising their guns—some climbed onto vehicles, others took cover behind roadside flowerbeds.
Soon, several military jeeps smashed through several grotesque corpses, charging out. The occupants kept firing at the undead surging from the sides and behind.
Seeing the military jeeps, Qian Yu’s eyes lit up. Whoever they were, their firepower meant more security for him.
He immediately ordered: “Everyone, help them!”
Instantly, a continuous barrage of gunfire erupted, like a full-scale modern battle.
Under heavy fire, the military jeeps broke through the horde and entered the square.
!
As the crowd fell back to the defensive line, more gunners from the convoy began resisting the undead.
Suddenly, several gray-white corpse dogs, controlled by black insects, howled out of the horde and lunged at nearby survivors, knocking them down and tearing into them with gaping jaws.
“Aaaah!!!”
The unlucky victims screamed in agony.
“Hold the line!!” someone shouted.
The convoy’s defensive line began shrinking; gunfire intensified. The corpse dogs charged through, ignoring bullets and plunging into the crowd.
“Kill those beasts first!” Lin Xian decided instantly. To survive, he had to stand with these survivors now.
Puff! Puff! Puff!
Several wind spears shot out, shattering the skulls of the corpse dogs. Lou Shasha and her brother also joined the fight.
Lou Hua didn’t pull his rifle. Instead, he charged forward, snapped a metal guardrail post from the roadside, swung it back, then hurled it with all his strength. The metal tube screamed through the air, piercing one white corpse dog clean through and sending its body flying over ten meters!
“Whoa, such strength!” Kiki gasped.
“He’s an adept,” Lin Xian said grimly.
“What kind of ability? Super strength?”
At that moment, the occupants of the military jeeps also disembarked and joined the defense.
Lin Xian had assumed they’d be soldiers—but instead, they were civilians in mismatched clothing. The leader was a balding middle-aged man in his forties, yet all of them carried identical Starfire 26 automatic tactical rifles—clearly military-issue weapons.
“Kill those dogs first!”
Seeing his men fall one after another, Qian Yu roared, firing relentlessly at the charging corpse dogs.
“I’ll help too!”
Seeing the corpse dogs storming into the crowd, Kiki gritted her teeth. Suddenly, she reached out—and before everyone’s eyes, she plucked a discarded bus from the roadside, lifted it into the air, then swung it forward!
Boom!
The immense force crushed dozens of grotesque corpses and several corpse dogs into pulp, leaving a trail of shredded limbs and gore across the road—terrifying to behold.
The massive display drew countless astonished stares. No one expected this newcomer to be such a powerful adept.
Her move instantly halved the pressure on the armed defenders and boosted everyone’s morale. The remaining fighters quickly reorganized their line.
After a volley of gunfire, the once-swarming horde began to retreat. Gunfire on the street gradually fell silent.
The sudden undead assault cost Qian Yu’s Black Cobra convoy three men; over ten died across the entire survivor camp. The square reeked of carnage.
Catching her breath, Lou Shasha stared at Kiki, mouth agape.
“Whoa, you’re so strong!”
Standing behind Lou Shasha, Lou Hua also studied the two with unusual interest.
Qian Yu and Eagle stared at Kiki with complex expressions. The atmosphere grew strange.
