Chapter 6: Don

~8 min read 1,554 words

Director Liang had clearly overestimated his own combat ability—how could a fifty-year-old man obsessed with lewd thoughts possibly break open such a heavy security door? But at this moment, he calmed down, stopped kicking the door, fearing that too much noise might attract some monster and bring disaster upon himself.

So he rolled his eyes and called out sinisterly to the inside.

“It’s fine, Teacher Chen, I just happen to have some uneaten meat cans—I’ll leave them right outside your door as a sign of sincerity. It won’t be long before night falls; either you open the door and eat them yourself, or… let the monsters eat them.”

“Maybe tonight, after you’re dead, I’ll find your corpse while it’s still warm… uh!”

Before he could finish his threat, a dull chopping sound suddenly echoed outside the door.

Liang Wei, who had just been spewing filth, fell completely silent.

Thud.

A body hitting the floor echoed down the corridor.

Chen Sixuan’s eyes widened in shock. Trembling, she crept back to the peephole. When she pressed her eye against it and saw what lay outside, her pupils contracted sharply.

Outside, a familiar young man was pulling a knife from Liang Wei’s skull.

Lin Xian!

The director had just been split open by a single slash!

Seeing this, Chen Sixuan gasped sharply. Before she could react, a voice came from outside.

“Teacher Chen, if you’re still alive, I suggest we don’t waste time.”

Lin Xian’s voice sent a chill down Chen Sixuan’s spine.

He’s here—he’s come to take me away!

A visible glow brightened Chen Sixuan’s expression. Seeing Liang Wei dead, she felt a surge of relief. Without hesitation, fueled by sudden courage, she flung the door open.

“Lin classmate…”

She called out instinctively, then glanced at the blood-smeared short knife in Lin Xian’s hand and instinctively stepped back two paces, her eyes unreadable—part relief, part terror.

Her gaze swept over him: Liang Wei had been nearly cleaved to the brow, slumped on the floor, eyes bulging, red and white fluids oozing endlessly, his death grotesque beyond words.

Ugh~

Chen Sixuan finally couldn’t hold back—she clutched her abdomen and retched.

But she hadn’t eaten in two days; her stomach was empty, and all she could bring up was gastric fluid.

Lin Xian looked at the haggard Chen Sixuan before him—so utterly different from the vibrant, commanding teacher he remembered—and felt a pang of sorrow.

Today, Chen Sixuan wore denim pants, a sweatshirt, and a thin windbreaker.

Probably what she thought was suitable for fleeing.

“That kind of guy is barely better than an animal. Don’t feel guilty. Are your bags packed?” Lin Xian’s gaze swept over the row of high heels by the shoe cabinet, then landed on her feet—she wasn’t even wearing shoes.

“Yes… I’m all ready!”

Chen Sixuan forced down the churning in her stomach, quickly steadied herself, determined not to appear a burden in front of Lin Xian. She bent down swiftly to put on her shoes, averting her eyes from Liang Wei’s corpse.

Lin Xian didn’t waste words. He walked in, searched quickly, pulled out a cardboard box, and dumped Chen Sixuan’s coffee maker, juicer, and a few other small appliances inside, then handed it to her.

“Hold this.”

“Huh? Why take these?!” Chen Sixuan snatched the box, tense and curious, not understanding why Lin Xian wanted these things.

But Lin Xian was her savior. Since he didn’t answer, she swallowed her questions and obediently clutched the box, following behind him.

Chen Sixuan’s entire luggage was just a small travel bag.

Inside, besides a few clothes, there was little of importance.

Oh—there was also a box of condoms.

Though still a virgin, as an educated woman, she held open-minded views and had maintained this habit of self-protection since adulthood.

Now, with the end of the world, pregnancy in this environment would be equivalent to entering hell.

No matter what lay ahead, this was her final safeguard for herself.

Beyond that, she had no food or water left.

Apartment 1203 upstairs was Liang’s place—the door was locked—but Chen Sixuan didn’t know what Lin Xian did; she only saw him place his hand on the door, fiddle with it briefly, and then the door unlocked.

Liang had claimed his home had plenty of food and water. How could Lin Xian, preparing to flee, pass up such an opportunity?

But as soon as the door opened, a foul stench rushed out. Chen Sixuan peered behind Lin Xian—and nearly fainted, her stomach surging.

Ugh~

Not just her—even Lin Xian turned pale, his brow furrowed.

Because inside Liang’s apartment, there was no food or water at all—only bloodstains everywhere. In the kitchen lay half a butchered corpse. A quick glance suggested it was a middle-aged woman.

It wasn’t hard to guess: this unfortunate woman was likely the original owner of the apartment—Liang’s wife.

“I apologize to animals. Calling him an animal is an insult to animals.” Lin Xian’s gaze turned icy. “Let’s go. Stay close. Try not to make a sound.” Realizing there was nothing useful to scavenge, he turned on his heel and left.

“Yes!” Chen Sixuan’s face was ashen, completely stunned.

“There are many dead people outside. Don’t scream.”

“Yes! Always watch your step. Don’t fall.”

“Yes!”

Having witnessed such a horrific violation of humanity, Chen Sixuan now behaved like a dutiful student—she listened intently to every word Lin Xian said.

A woman’s instinct told her: following Lin Xian was the right choice.

Thwack!

Inside the station, Lin Xian smashed the skulls of several zombies with his blade, leading Chen Sixuan down the station’s side path.

Chen Sixuan’s face was deathly pale; she forced herself to follow, swallowing down the churning in her stomach.

She hadn’t imagined the outside world had become this horrific—like a living hell.

The scene inside Liang’s apartment would haunt her forever.

In the dark tunnel, only the sound of their breathing echoed.

Soon, dim track lights revealed the massive silhouette of a train. Chen Sixuan’s mouth fell open in shock. Then, as Lin Xian approached, the heavy train suddenly roared to life—its headlights blazed, engulfing Chen Sixuan in blinding light.

!

“Don’t stand there—get on!”

“Yes!”

Lin Xian took the cardboard box from her, then grabbed her hand and pulled her aboard.

The two entered the cab, closing the heavy iron door behind them.

Inside, the lights glowed bright. Instantly, surrounded by steel walls, a profound sense of safety washed over Chen Sixuan.

“Lin classmate… you really know how to drive a train?”

“Do you think I pushed this thing here?”

Lin Xian smiled faintly. After closing the door, his expression relaxed slightly.

He placed his hand on the floor, activated his Mechanical Heart, and turned off the train’s headlights. Then he led her to Car No. 1, pulled out a bag of bread and a bottle of water, and tossed them to Chen Sixuan.

“You look like you haven’t eaten in days. Eat.”

Chen Sixuan snatched them eagerly, eyes red, silent tears streaming down her face. She bit her lower lip, clinging to the edge of composure, voice trembling.

“Th… thank you…”

She was starving. Before even setting down her backpack, she tore open the bread packaging, weeping as she devoured it in huge bites.

Lin Xian sat across from her, replenishing his energy while observing Chen Sixuan.

Seeing a familiar face brought him genuine comfort.

In this world where life and death hung by a thread, no one could resist the devouring fear of death and loneliness—not even him.

Humans are social creatures. Especially after the internet collapsed, the feeling was unbearable.

Starting the Infinite Train and using the Wind Cannon skill drained his energy severely.

It was hard to describe—but using this power always burdened his body.

“Chen Si…” Lin Xian’s gaze flickered. “Never mind—I’ll still call you Teacher Chen.”

Watching Chen Sixuan devour the bread, Lin Xian laid down the rules.

“First, I’m an ability user. This train can only be operated by me. If I die, you die. So since I brought you aboard, from today on, we’re allies—partners. You must trust me unconditionally and follow my orders. Otherwise, your fate will be grim.”

Chen Sixuan swallowed a bite of bread, her eyes red, and nodded firmly.

“I understand. From today on, I’ll follow you.”

Lin Xian nodded. “As for what my ability is—you don’t need to know. This train is our fortress. It’s sturdy, but it won’t necessarily hold off those monsters. And there will certainly be people who covet our supplies. When desperate, human hearts can be more terrible than devils.”

“So often, I’ll need you to come with me to solve problems, scavenge supplies, help me navigate, and guard the doors.”

“Mm.” Perhaps because she’d eaten, Chen Sixuan slowly regained some strength.

“Also, Teacher Chen.” Lin Xian rose slowly, his gaze serious as he looked at her. “You’d better prepare yourself mentally—I’m definitely going to sleep with you.”

Chen Sixuan’s body visibly trembled. She clenched the bread in her hand, sitting on the floor, her messy hair hiding her flustered eyes.

Her former student—now speaking so bluntly to her—sent a jolt through her heart.

She lowered her head and gave a soft “Mm,” her only reply.

Then she went back to eating, her heart pounding wildly.
