Chapter 94: Underground City (Chapter 8 of 10 — Requesting Monthly Votes!!)

Clank~ clank~

Aaagh!!!

The clatter of rails and the shrieks of zombies echoed across the sky; countless zombies surged from all directions, surrounding the “Infinite” on all sides, yet everyone’s attention was drawn to the front— their gazes piercing through the horde, fixed on the breathtaking super-engineering ahead.

The “Infinite,” with astonishing power, plowed forward like a steel behemoth, ruthlessly crushing cars and zombies in its path, finally turning smoothly onto the dedicated track leading into the underground city, slowly approaching the towering outer wall. At the center of the track stood a massive gate, behind which lay a vast loading platform, where several high-class freight cars rested silently.

But as far as the eye could see, the platform was empty; distant construction vehicles, cranes, and guard towers had long been buried under snow and wind— this unfinished super-engineering seemed frozen in time.

“Is this underground city abandoned?” Kiki asked in surprise.

"Maybe it's already fallen," Lin Xian said grimly. "No wonder no survivor convoy mentioned this place—it's been a hellhole all along."

Zombies blanketed the hills and valleys; the silent underground city— only teams like Lin Xian’s, driving heavy fortress trains to gamble for luck, could even enter. How could ordinary convoys make it here? And given this hellish scene, who would risk coming for food unless driven by Lin Xian’s mechanical ability?

“So are we going in?” Shasha asked.

“Yes!”

Lin Xian glanced at Kiki and decided: “I’ll open that gate. Chen Laoshi, you drive the train in. Everyone else cover me.”

Hss~

The moment the cockpit door opened, zombies flooded in like a tide. Kiki raised her hand and instantly unleashed an invisible psychic barrier, flinging the first dozen zombies backward. Lin Xian charged out without hesitation, his gun firing rapidly— bullets rained down, carving a bloody path ahead.

Taptaptap!

Fire rained down.

Dabao and Shasha also disembarked, continuously firing to cover Lin Xian.

Seizing the opening, Lin Xian sprinted to the giant gate, pressed his hand against its icy surface, activated his Mechanical Heart, and swiftly connected to its hydraulic system. With a loud hum, the gate shattered through the snow and wind, slowly swinging open on either side.

Chen Sixuan immediately pushed the throttle lever forward, driving the “Infinite” into the platform.

The others retreated while fighting, falling back toward the inner wall.

Once everyone was safely inside the platform, Lin Xian controlled the gate to close again.

Bang! Bang! Bang!!

As the gate sealed, the number of zombies pouring in dwindled rapidly— soon, Dabao and Shasha cleared them all.

Aaagh…!!!

Tens of thousands of zombies were barred outside the gate, shrieking and stretching their hands through the gaps— a horrifying sight.

“Let’s fall back quickly— watch out, there might still be some inside.”

Lin Xian warned directly. He didn’t believe the underground city was truly empty. If the entire city had shut down, the most likely reason was internal collapse— otherwise, the former Federal Government would never have abandoned this multi-trillion-credit project.

Squeak~

The “Infinite” slowly pulled into one of the platforms. Around them: empty, silent.

The massive entrance to the underground city yawned like a deep wound in the earth, where rising warm air collided with howling cold winds, swirling into mist above the shaft.

None of them noticed that as the “Infinite” entered the internal loading platform, several hidden surveillance cameras within the platform quietly rotated, locking onto the train.

“No one’s here at all…”

Kiki frowned at the empty platform. “No way— how are we supposed to search such a vast underground city?”

Lin Xian said grimly: “We should’ve anticipated this. Survivors nearby never received any radio signals from this underground city— it’s been in silent mode for a long time. But that’s fine— no people means we can search freely for useful items. But the problem is, if there’s no power, we can’t just jump down. Without electricity, the central control system must’ve shut down long ago— even if I wanted to hack in, I couldn’t.” Kiki clenched her teeth. She’d spent last night preparing elaborate plans and daydreaming— yet now, arriving here, she found no power at all. No matter how skilled a hacker she was, she couldn’t fix a server with no electricity.

“Then take whatever we can find.”

Lin Xian wasn’t discouraged. If no one was here, things were simpler. The place held plenty of heavy machinery— perfect fuel for his Mechanical Heart. Without doubt, he could use these to reach Level 3.

That wasn’t a bad deal.

“Chen Laoshi,” Lin Xian thought briefly, then decided. “Kiki and I will check the entrance. To avoid wasting time, you three stay near this platform and gather anything usable— load it onto the train. We’re on a tight schedule. The road ahead might force us to reverse out— turning around outside is impossible. We’ll have to backtrack to Yuchicheng and take the northern route.”

“Got it,” Dabao nodded.

Shasha pointed to the flatbed trailer behind them. “Lin Brother, why not use the forklifts on the platform to haul stuff straight to the back? We’ve got gasoline— there’s plenty of space on the trailer…”

Lin Xian nodded. “Right. Prioritize machinery. If you find household goods or anything useful, load it on. This place must be full of treasures— we’ll need them on the road. Kiki, you come with me.”

“Alright, let’s go check— maybe we’ll find something useful,” Kiki pulled up her down jacket hood, rubbed her hands together, grabbed a gun, and prepared to disembark with Lin Xian.

Chen Sixuan looked worried. “Be careful. It’s quiet here, but I still feel uneasy.”

Just as Lin Xian was about to open the cockpit door, a beeping alarm suddenly sounded inside.

!

Chen Sixuan turned toward the sound and saw the train’s response system flashing— her eyes widened in shock.

“Lin Xian… it’s the responder!”

“How is this thing even active?” Kiki frowned. “Without the red bead, how can the signal connect?”

Lin Xian strode over, his expression darkening. “Unless it’s an internal call.”

Standing before the responder, Lin Xian hesitated briefly, then decisively pressed the answer switch.

Beep…

The air seemed to fall silent.

“Who is it?” Lin Xian broke the quiet.

A mature female voice came from the responder.

“Survivors, hello. This is Research Center, Level -52, Underground City No. 9. Can you hear this transmission?”

At these words, everyone froze.

Someone was still alive inside the underground city!

New book launch— begging for monthly votes! “Infinite Train,” soaring to the skies!

Deeply grateful!
