Chapter 63: There Are No Worldly Desires

~7 min read 1,225 words

In the sky above the Witch Academy, two witches were flying on brooms.

One, with golden hair, was breathtakingly beautiful and exquisitely graceful; she sat demurely sideways on her broom, her long, slender, porcelain-white legs dangling naturally, nine fluffy fox tails trailing behind her—her aura elegant and captivating.

The other witch, with sun-tanned skin, appeared rebellious: her hair was streaked with wild colors, and her face was heavily made up, nearly masking it like a mask.

Yet her riding posture on the broom was unusually proper—cross-legged, the kind typically seen only in young novice witches or elderly traditionalists.

Moreover, this strange witch’s attire was even more conservative: a long black robe paired with lantern-style pants, completely covering her body, showing none of the exposure or flirtatiousness expected of a normal girl.

But when a breeze swept through mid-flight, clinging her robes tightly to her form, the fleeting curves it revealed still struck the eye with startling allure, briefly stealing the spotlight from the fox witch beside her.

“S-sister, the academy’s faction qualification exams are normally handled by the corresponding clubs—you just need to join the right club if you want to test for a faction.”

On the fox witch’s shoulder, a tiny chibi fox doll spoke these words.

Audrey still found it hard to call this girl “sister”—she secretly believed she herself should be the senior—but what could she do? She needed help, and though reluctant, she spoke through her puppet.

After speaking, she summoned courage to sneak a glance at the sister flying beside her.

For a severely socially anxious little fox, this was already a bold act.

But the more she looked, the more confused she became.

She began to suspect this sister might not be quite right.

Because she had sensed absolutely no desire toward herself from this sister named Dorothy.

“This is weird—did my talent for sensing desire just fail?”

Audrey thought, unsettled.

In her entire life, she had never met anyone untouched by her allure—in fact, even her own family members inevitably stirred primal desires upon seeing her: both her mothers, her second aunt, her sister—all of them.

It had nothing to do with sexuality—it was merely biological instinct.

Any being with the concept of beauty found it nearly impossible to resist her.

Honestly, had her family not held some status and power, she would have been snatched away long ago as a private treasure or concubine—don’t overestimate the moral standards of witches.

Even now, when she came to study here, her family had been reluctant; they only agreed after her persistent insistence.

But now, Audrey suddenly realized someone truly showed no interest in her—and for the first time, this left her strangely unsettled.

If they were complete strangers, fine—she wasn’t delusional enough to believe everyone must desire her. But she needed this sister’s help, and now her talent had failed, leaving her deeply uneasy.

She felt like a novice succubus who’d just spotted her first prey, ready to begin her first hunt—only to discover the target’s preferences were completely unreadable. She froze, bewildered, unsure what to do next.

Part of her wanted to give up, but when she saw the lifelike girl puppet on the new sister’s shoulder, she gritted her teeth and decided to push on a little longer.

Still, this sister really had a lot of pets: on her left shoulder, besides the girl puppet Audrey longed for, a small black cat slept peacefully, while the puppet playfully stroked the sleeping feline.

And on her right shoulder, things got even stranger—a tiny, majestic dragon stood there.

Yes, not a pseudo-dragon or sub-species, but a genuine, pure-blooded dragon—Audrey wasn’t so uneducated she couldn’t recognize one.

Though she didn’t know what breed this all-black dragon, seemingly forged from steel, belonged to, its pure draconic aura confirmed its lineage.

Even though witches had once subdued dragons, that didn’t mean dragons—another calamity race—had fully submitted. Only a few dragon royalty from the Dragon Kingdom could barely control such ferocious beasts as familiars or pets.

Proud dragons recognized authority only from the Dragon King, who had crushed them with overwhelming force; they acknowledged no one else—not even the Divine King or Demon King.

So this sister must be from the Dragon Kingdom.

But Audrey recalled her two mothers’ usual opinions of the Dragon Kingdom.

A bunch of uncultured brutes, all muscle and no brains, war-obsessed fighters...

emmmmm......

But this sister didn’t seem like a Dragon Kingdom witch—Dragon witches didn’t possess such vast knowledge.

In short, she couldn’t understand this sister at all.

Doubtful, Audrey activated her desire-source talent for the first time in her life, enhancing it with magic—and its effect surged dramatically.

Suddenly, the fantasies of passersby toward her flooded her mind as vivid images—but having experienced this before, the little fox simply discarded them all, focusing solely on sensing the sister’s desire.

Yet, there was nothing.

Even when she pushed her talent to its maximum, she sensed nothing at all.

Hmm... wait, there was just a faint trace.

Overjoyed, the little fox finally caught a whisper of emotion from the sister and hurriedly analyzed it.

Result...

“This little sister is really naively silly. She’s so pitiful—I should be kinder to her, take better care of her.”

Audrey: “........”

Looking at the sentence she’d decoded—containing a hint of guilt—the little fox felt a complex mix of emotions.

Why, when she’d finally found the chance to realize her dream and encountered someone untouched by base desire—two wonderful things combined—didn’t it bring her more joy?

Then why couldn’t she feel happy?

Who’s silly? Even if you’re my senior, you can’t just slander me like that—and who needs your care? With your weak magic, I could take on ten of you with one hand.

The little fox grumbled inwardly again.

But this seemingly rebellious sister was actually a good person.

Audrey studied the heavily made-up sister again—since she sensed no vile desire, her social anxiety didn’t trigger.

Her courage grew slightly.

This was the first time in her life, outside her family, that she’d felt a stranger wasn’t frightening.

But perhaps because she stared too intently for the first time, the sister noticed.

“Is there something on my face?”

Dorothy cautiously touched her face, thinking her makeup had smudged.

“Oh, no, no—I just think you’re a good person, uh, the kind without any worldly desires.”

Caught staring, the little fox blushed and lowered her head. She wanted to apologize, but even though she no longer feared this sister, they were still strangers—and she still felt inexplicable shame at speaking.

Finally, the chibi doll on her shoulder voiced her thoughts.

Dorothy: “.......”

This little sister must have a serious mental issue—I was just manipulating her, and she actually thinks I’m a good person?

Thank goodness she met me—if she hadn’t, someone would’ve tricked her into spending thirteen nights on a single spicy hotpot.

And what do you mean I have no worldly desires? I had my tools confiscated, okay?

Ugh, forget it. Too tiring. I’ve genuinely lost that kind of joy anyway—now only studying magic and learning new knowledge stirs even a flicker in my heart.

I’ll just keep an eye on this silly little sister—don’t want her getting into trouble and messing up my relationship with Spider Teacher. I haven’t even drained her supplies yet.

She thought to herself.

......The two witches continued flying......
