Chapter 8: Chapter Eight: Reinterrogation

~5 min read 990 words

Feeling the handcuffs vanish, Ye Nan immediately tore off the cloth covering his head.

A narrow, dark room with black walls; inside, only two stools and a table, four cameras observing every angle without blind spots—Ye Nan knew this was the famed FBI.

FBI, full name the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, is one of the world’s most renowned and important intelligence agencies under the U.S. Department of Justice.

Within this bureau, violence, detention, and death are everywhere, employed without restraint; no prisoner has ever resisted its interrogation. Enter here, and you’ve already stepped one foot into the gates of Hell—your fate, life or death, depends entirely on luck.

“Hello, I’m Henry James, an investigator with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation. You can just call me James,” James said with a smile, sitting upright before Ye Nan in a black suit and black tie.

“Your name is Ye Nan, you live in Berk Town, New York. Your father is Andy, your mother is Shilu, and you have a lovely younger sister named Jessica. Your family runs a small Chinese restaurant. Hmm, a very happy life.”

Upon hearing this, Ye Nan’s expression remained unchanged. He hadn’t been transferred to the FBI immediately—the FBI must have investigated his family first. Since they’d moved him here, they’d clearly verified everything.

James glanced up at Ye Nan’s face, found no anomaly, then picked up a thin sheet of paper. “Actually, you’re not your father’s biological son. You were originally an illegal immigrant who smuggled yourself into the United States.”

“Wrong,” Ye Nan said coldly. “I was kidnapped—what you call a ‘piglet.’ Don’t use the term ‘illegal immigrant’ for me. That’s an insult.”

“Oh, no need to worry. Whether you’re an illegal immigrant or not is none of our concern. The Bureau doesn’t have the time to punish some petty smuggler.” James smiled faintly at Ye Nan.

Ye Nan clenched his lips shut, saying nothing. He wanted to see what James was up to. Right now, he was the fish on the chopping block—dead pigs fear no boiling water.

“Shut up. You think staying silent will make you escape speaking? How amusing.” James chuckled at Ye Nan, a naive child indeed.

“Ye Nan, don’t you think your parents and that lovely sister form a perfect family? If your actions shatter it, wouldn’t that be a terrible waste? Oh, my God, you know exactly what I mean, you little brat.”

“You dare,” Ye Nan suddenly surged forward, his eyes fixed on James like a predator ready to strike.

He could care nothing for himself—but he could not afford to care nothing for his family. In half a year, he had become part of Andy’s household. To him, family mattered more than his own life.

“What do I dare not do? If you had power or influence, I might fear your threats. But you?…” James shook his head, smiling at Ye Nan. “A tiger cub hasn’t grown yet—it can’t hunt people.”

Ye Nan slumped onto the stool, staring blankly at James. He admitted it: James’s words made sense. He couldn’t act on impulse.

He hated himself—why he had no strength, no power, no wealth. If he were a wealthy merchant, the FBI would never dare threaten him like this. They’d treat him with fine food and drink, negotiate with him. But he was nothing.

“You don’t need to go this far. Our Bureau isn’t some murderous gang. If you tell us everything you know, I won’t mind letting you go.” After the intimidation, James swiftly offered a carrot. Seeing Ye Nan come alive again, James’s smile deepened.

“You don’t need to sacrifice your happiness for some Dr. Ma Xiu. Think: Is a stranger more important than your family? This choice shouldn’t be hard for you.”

“Fine, I’ll talk,” Ye Nan exhaled deeply. He had decided. As James said, risking his family for Dr. Ma Xiu was foolish.

“But you must promise to spare my family. Tell them I died in the disaster brought by Godzilla.”

"Naturally. Our Bureau never harms innocent American citizens. Rest assured. Besides, you don’t have to die—letting you live isn’t difficult." James’s heart leapt; a smile crept onto his face. He could already see the glory waving at him.

“Heh.” Ye Nan smiled. He didn’t believe James’s promise of mercy. The Federal Government needed to prevent Godzilla’s existence from leaking. They’d publicly claim all the eggs were destroyed—so they’d never allow a witness like him to live.

“But luckily,” Ye Nan’s lips curled into a faint, happy smile, “I knocked Jessica unconscious.”

“I’ll tell you—Baby Godzilla is right…”

“Wait.”

Before Ye Nan could finish, someone interrupted him. Ye Nan stared in shock—the man was Dr. Ma Xiu.

“Oh, my dear little Ye Nan, how could you do this?” Dr. Ma Xiu rushed over, embracing Ye Nan and whispering into his ear: “Say nothing.”

“Who are you? How dare you break into my FBI office?” James stared at the intruder, momentarily stunned.

“You’re under arrest, James. Charged with treason. From now on, you’ll be held in custody until trial.”

Three black-clad men behind Dr. Ma Xiu seized James and swiftly cuffed his hands behind his back.

James struggled violently. “Who are you? I’m an FBI investigator! You can’t treat me like this!”

“FBI investigator? I’m an agent of the Central Intelligence Agency. I suspect you’re a foreign spy. So you’d better stay right here.” The black-clad man leaned close to James’s ear and whispered.

Hearing this, James struggled even harder. Seeing his resistance, the man chuckled, punched him in the stomach—and James instantly went still.

“Come on, my dear Ye Nan. I’ll take you somewhere interesting,” Dr. Ma Xiu said warmly, noticing Ye Nan standing there dazed.

“Is this really okay?” Ye Nan asked.

“Of course. You saw it yourself—everything was done by the CIA. None of it concerns us.” Dr. Ma Xiu shrugged, a smug smile spreading across his face.
