Chapter 107: Spatial Shift

~7 min read 1,346 words

Contracted two pet beasts as a freshman?! And one Fire-type and one Ghost-type at that?!

The security guard couldn't help wondering if his ears had misheard.

But today really was the day for the taming burden class freshmen to report for集训.

The security guard felt a little dazed. He was a beast tamer too — though his rank wasn't high, he had at least come up through a proper beast-taming high school.

In all his years, he had never seen in real life a freshly minted first-year high school beast tamer contract two pet beasts.

Though he had seen it in the news…

The security guard steadied himself. As security for the city's number-one beast-taming middle school, he couldn't act like he'd never seen the world.

"Show me your information card."

Qiao Sang handed the card over.

The security guard stared at the screen, checking it over and over.

No late enrollment, no repeating a year — a freshly 15-year-old graduating junior high student.

This was a genius among geniuses. Barring any accidents, her future was bound to be limitless.

He slowed his registration and said warmly, "Classmate Qiao Sang, your name sounds really nice."

"Not really." Qiao Sang scratched her head.

"It really does. I register so many names every day, but yours is the one that left an impression on me."

Qiao Sang felt a little embarrassed. People had recently praised her looks, and others had praised her talent, but no one had ever sincerely praised her name like this.

"I had a grandmother on my father's side whose given name was also just Sang. No wonder I took one look at you and felt a kinship."

Qiao Sang: "…"

The security guard realized the moment he finished speaking that he'd said the wrong thing — those were words he usually said to his superiors, and now he'd used them on a child.

He gave an awkward laugh and said, "You're here for the集训, right? Wait while I make a call and have Teacher Xian come pick you up."

They're actually sending a teacher to pick her up? Is she getting that much face?

Qiao Sang felt a little overwhelmed by the favor. Before she could refuse, she saw the security guard had already dialed the call.

"Hello, this is the south gate security office. There's a first-year high school student here reporting for集训, named Qiao Sang. Please come pick her up."

That was fast…

Why does it feel like that phone number didn't even need to be looked up, like it was right at the top…

"Xian."

The little Treasure Ghost on her head suddenly sensed something and looked blankly in one direction.

The air over there seemed to twist for a moment.

The next second, a pet beast with loose, wrinkled skin, mostly gray and pink with a white belly, ears so large they resembled wings, and a bat-like appearance appeared out of thin air. Its claws were holding a few sheets of paper.

Qiao Sang stared at the suddenly appearing pet beast in a daze. It looked vaguely familiar but she couldn't name it — she only knew it should be a Psychic-type pet beast.

Her heart gave a jolt. The skill this pet beast had used didn't seem to be Teleport — it was Spatial Shift.

Teleport was a skill that let the user reach another location in an instant; as long as the space was sealed off, it could be countered.

Simply put, if you put a pet beast in a room and shut the door, the only space it could move to was inside that room.

But Spatial Shift could ignore three-dimensional space and move to other coordinates.

The gap between the two was no small matter.

You could see it just from the grades the Alliance had assigned them — Teleport was an intermediate skill, while Spatial Shift was an advanced skill.

"Fang!"

Fire Fang Dog bared its fangs warily at the pet beast that had suddenly popped up.

The big-eared pet beast paid no attention to Fire Fang Dog. It sized Qiao Sang up, then flipped through the papers in its claws one by one.

After barely two pages it stopped. The big-eared pet beast looked at the page it had flipped to, then looked at Qiao Sang, as if confirming something.

"Teacher Xian, her name is Qiao Sang," the security guard reminded it.

Qiao Sang was a little dumbfounded. So when they said Teacher Xian, they meant the pet beast…

Thinking about it carefully, it wasn't unheard of in beast-taming society for pet beasts to serve as teachers — only their students were also pet beasts.

The main reason these pet beasts could serve as teachers was that their own tamers held posts at the school.

"Xian."

Teacher Xian nodded. Its left claw held the papers, and its right claw swept upward.

Qiao Sang felt darkness before her eyes and a wave of dizziness in her head.

When her vision cleared, she found herself in a room laid out like an office.

Qiao Sang was stunned.

Teacher Xian's Spatial Shift could even carry people! Its mastery must be at least Perfect!

After all, without some kind of cheat, getting an advanced skill to Perfect wasn't something just any ordinary-ranked pet beast could do.

"Classmate Qiao Sang, long time no see." A deep, resonant male voice sounded beside her.

Qiao Sang turned her head and saw a middle-aged man with a perfectly combed-back hairstyle sitting behind a desk, with Teacher Xian beside him.

Sitting in front of him was a boy who had once taken the special-exam test with her.

"Hello, Vice Principal," Qiao Sang said quickly.

Qiao Sang recognized the speaker at a glance.

Because of the awakening of the Beast Codex, her memory had been getting better and better — people and things she'd seen, she basically never forgot.

Most importantly, the Vice Principal was the first A-rank Breeder she had ever met, and he had once mentored her.

Liu Yao, the moment Qiao Sang turned around, first froze, then abruptly straightened his back, leaned forward, and narrowed his eyes.

"Classmate Qiao Sang, this Treasure Ghost is?"

"It's my second pet beast."

"Holy crap!"

Before Liu Yao could even begin to digest this news, the boy in front of him burst out in shock.

"Lu Liangye, watch your language." Liu Yao glanced at him.

Upon hearing this, Lu Liangye immediately shut his mouth and raised his hand to make a zipping motion across his lips.

That news had been so shocking it had actually made him curse in front of the vice principal…

Liu Yao stood up and walked toward Qiao Sang. He stared intently at the Treasure Seeking Ghost for a moment, then shifted his gaze to the Fire Fang Dog.

The Fire Fang Dog had been looking around in wonder at how the surroundings had suddenly changed, but upon noticing someone staring at it, it lifted its chin and struck a dashing pose, baring its sharp fangs.

The more Liu Yao looked, the more incredible he found it.

Just as he was about to say something, he suddenly remembered there was still another student present, so he returned to his office chair and said, "I was just in the middle of telling Lu Liangye here. Since you've come, you might as well hear it too."

Qiao Sang nodded.

"There are twelve of you in total for this training camp. Not every student from the taming burden class is coming. The reason you were chosen isn't because you did exceptionally well on your exams — you should know yourselves that your scores on the high school entrance exam were only barely above the minimum cutoff."

Qiao Sang and Lu Liangye exchanged a knowing glance.

So this guy's academic scores weren't great either.

Lu Liangye instantly felt a lot better.

"But that's not important. The purpose of this training camp isn't to make up academic classes — it's to build a team capable of defeating Li Tan Beast Taming High School." Liu Yao said.
