Chapter 218: Barrier

This was her first time encountering a skill that specifically countered Ghost-type in battle.

But… it wasn't a big problem.

Although Detect could sense Little Treasure Ghost's movements, there was a prerequisite — one had to keep staring at it.

For Little Treasure Ghost, whose Hypnosis only worked when it locked eyes with the target, this was practically a flaw handed to them on a silver platter.

"Hypnosis."

Following Qiao Sang's command, Little Treasure Ghost, whose position had already been seen through, revealed itself and fixed its purple-glowing eyes on the Bear Eater that was staring at it.

Four eyes met — red against purple. Sleepiness washed over Bear Eater; its body swayed left and right, its eyelids drooping uncontrollably.

"It's over, it's over, we're done for."

"Another one taken down by Hypnosis."

"Speaking of which, this Treasure Ghost's skill proficiency is all really high — and it's still just a beginner pet beast."

"Don't jump to conclusions so early. Xue Chuhua did make the school team, after all. It can't be that bad."

"Right, that earlier move… Shadow Control didn't really do much to Bear Eater."

Just as the crowd buzzed with discussion, Xue Chuhua steadied her breath, sank her Qi into her dantian, and shouted loudly: "Spicy beef burger!"

Bear Eater's ears twitched, and its body stopped swaying.

"Seven-layer cheese meat patty fried egg burger!" Xue Chuhua continued shouting.

Bear Eater opened its eyes.

"And a super mega double burger!"

"Shi Shi!"

Bear Eater was completely free of sleepiness, its eyes no longer dull. With an excited expression, it looked around.

Where? Where's the food?!

Seeing this, Xue Chuhua smiled at the corner of her mouth and tempted it one last time: "Win this match, and I'll buy you a hundred of everything I just mentioned when we get back."

"Shi Shi!

"

Bear Eater let out an excited cry toward the sky, then fixed its eyes on Little Treasure Ghost, brimming with fighting spirit.

Qiao Sang: "!

!"

Honestly, this was the first time since becoming a beast master that she'd been this shocked in a match.

A Mastery-level Hypnosis — broken just like that.

Could this be the power of a foodie?!

Little Treasure Ghost wore the exact same shocked expression.

Its Hypnosis didn't work on this guy either…

"Rocket Headbutt!" Seeing her opponent spacing out, Xue Chuhua waved her hand and seized the chance to give the command.

"Shi Shi!"

The next second, Bear Eater's massive body leaped up and charged fiercely toward Little Treasure Ghost. As it rushed forward, a white energy gathered atop its head, the speed so great that air currents swirled around its body.

If this hit landed, with Little Treasure Ghost's defense, it would likely lose its ability to fight on the spot.

Watching the situation on the field, everyone held their breath.

"Are we finally going to win?!"

"It's already the 50th match — time to come down."

"Xue Chuhua's got something going on — she actually pulled Bear Eater out of Hypnosis with food."

"This Rocket Headbutt — forget a Treasure Ghost, even my Armored Beast couldn't take it."

Qiao Sang was shocked, yes, but she had been observing the situation on the field the whole time.

Actually, the moment Bear Eater appeared, she had already thought of the most reliable battle strategy.

That was to rely purely on dodging, until its energy ran out.

Bear Eater had strong offense and high defense, but its slow reaction speed was common knowledge.

And Little Treasure Ghost had Teleport — in terms of speed, it left Bear Eater in the dust by miles. As long as Bear Eater kept attacking and burning through energy, it would be the first to exhaust itself.

But now Qiao Sang had changed her mind.

She had been taking care of Little Treasure Ghost since it was born. She couldn't say she knew every single thought on its mind, but she could at least guess right nine times out of ten.

From Little Treasure Ghost's expression, and how at the start of the match it couldn't even be bothered to hide and approach before using Hypnosis, instead controlling its opponent on the spot with Psychic, she knew it was probably tired of fighting.

The previous dozens of matches had almost all been Little Treasure Ghost fighting on its own battle instinct. Now, facing Bear Eater, with Little Treasure Ghost's limited battle experience, it was absolutely no match.

They say pet beasts learn everything quickly in the early stage — whatever the beast master instills in them, they take as truth.

It wasn't easy to come across a strong opponent. If she won by relying purely on dodging as she'd originally planned, Little Treasure Ghost would likely instinctively want to dodge whenever it faced powerful opponents in future battles.

Besides, Little Treasure Ghost clearly had no enthusiasm for battling left — a quick finish was better.

Although Qiao Sang's mind had been racing for a long time, only 2 seconds had passed in reality.

Because Bear Eater's change had come too suddenly, Little Treasure Ghost, faced with the unexpected attack, didn't react in time and froze on the spot.

At that moment, it heard its beast master's voice.

"Barrier."

Barrier?

Although Little Treasure Ghost was completely baffled, it still instinctively waved its short toes and channeled the energy within its body.

As the energy gathered, a faintly translucent barrier only about 20 centimeters wide appeared in front of Little Treasure Ghost.

Little Treasure Ghost stared at the massive creature charging straight at it, eyes wide, its little heart pounding nonstop.

"Xunxun…"

So scary…

This barrier won't hold it back, right? It's not even as big as the opponent's head…

Right after that, it heard its beast master's next command:

"Use Shadow Control on the shadow on the barrier!"

The shadow on the barrier?

Little Treasure Ghost hurriedly looked at the barrier in front of it, and sure enough, saw the shadow of the Naer Bear on it.

"Xunxun!"

Little Treasure Ghost cried out excitedly, hurriedly placing its short toe on top.

Watching the Naer Bear less than a centimeter away from Treasure Ghost, it suddenly stopped just as it was about to land the attack.

At once, everyone who had thought Treasure Ghost couldn't withstand this Rocket Headbutt fell silent.

The next second, an uproar exploded.

"Holy crap! Holy crap! It can do that?!"

"I told you Treasure Ghost was using Shadow Control at the start, but you guys didn't believe me!"

"Psychic couldn't control the Naer Bear, but Shadow Control did!"

"Obviously. Psychic has to keep increasing its power based on the opponent's size and energy, but Shadow Control only needs to control the shadow. Otherwise, why would the Alliance classify it as a high-tier skill?"

"By the way, can barriers cast shadows?"

"How did you even pass the exam?"

"I got in through a special recruitment, what about it?"

"Oh, then no problem. A shadow is a projection formed when an object blocks light. Look at the environment now—lights everywhere overhead. The Naer Bear is charging straight at the barrier, so its shadow will definitely appear on it. But for Qiao Sang to think of combining the barrier with Shadow Control this fast, she's not ordinary…"

On the field.

"Just keep controlling it and making it spin in circles!" Qiao Sang issued her final command.

"Xunxun!"

Without needing its beast master to remind it, the moment Little Treasure Ghost gained control of the Naer Bear, it excitedly used its short toe to keep drawing circles on the barrier, playing around.

"Shi Shi!

!"

The Naer Bear let out a miserable cry.

"You useless thing! Struggle free! Think of your Super Mega Double Burger!" Xue Chuhua shouted loudly.

An old book friend I've known for ten years recommended this book-reading app to me,! It's freaking awesome, I use it to listen to audiobooks while driving and before bed to kill time, you can download it here..】

"Shi Shi!

!"

The Naer Bear's eyes welled with tears.

It wanted to! It just couldn't move!

In the end, Xue Chuhua had underestimated the power of a high-tier skill. After screaming for over 40 seconds, the Naer Bear fell completely silent.

"Xunxun"

Looking at the fallen Naer Bear, Little Treasure Ghost excitedly floated over to its beast master to celebrate.

But then it suddenly thought of something, its body swayed violently, it showed a weary expression, and looked at its beast master with pitiful eyes.

"Xunxun…"

Qiao Sang: "…"

This acting…

"Naer Bear is unable to battle, Qiao Sang…" the female referee teacher announced the result.

Just then, Xue Chuhua interrupted: "Teacher, I still have one more pet beast. It can't count as her winning just like that."

The female teacher was stunned for a moment, then corrected: "Naer Bear is unable to battle. Qiao Sang wins the first round."

After saying that, she turned to Qiao Sang and asked: "Do you need to replenish energy now?"

Qiao Sang shook her head: "No need. I still have one more pet beast too. It's time to switch it in."
