Chapter 104: The New Department Head

~9 min read 1,690 words

After Yang Tianxing and Tan Zhizhi finished dinner at the Jiaoda canteen and returned to room 312 of the Finance Institute, everyone had arrived except for Li Ainan.

Having just met after the New Year, everyone was very enthusiastic, bragging, eating local specialties brought from each other's hometowns, complaining a few times about the freezing cold weather in Chang'an, and then starting to tidy up the dormitory and clean.

Yang Tianxing's nerves were still buzzing; he felt he needed an outlet, so he suggested going online to play games.

Qian Jiale and Yi Le both felt it didn't matter, but Fu Yiming refused to go no matter what.

"I said last year that I would study hard this semester and focus on my part-time job; the all-nighters for all four years of college were used up last semester."

Fu Yiming said firmly.

Song Fei didn't believe it at all, and he tried to coax Fu Yiming just like Yang Tianxing did.

"Old Fu, stop acting cool; I'm treating tonight."

Fu Yiming shook his head: "Not going."

"I'll add a chicken leg."

"I wouldn't go even if you added dragon meat."

Yi Min also chimed in to persuade him: "CS has updated to the latest version; let's go experience it."

"You guys go; I need to read for a while. If the auntie comes tonight, I'll handle her for you."

Fu Yiming picked up a book, intending to read.

In the end, Yang Tianxing saw that this wouldn't work; he had to take action himself.

"Old Fu, let me tell you something."

Fu Yiming looked up: "If you want to persuade me to go online, there's no need. I plan to go for a half-hour run tomorrow morning, and I'll bring you guys breakfast then."

Yang Tianxing shook his head: "I never persuade anyone to go online."

Yang Tianxing said: "In my final exams last semester, I got 46 in Western Economics, 37 in Principles of Management, 48 in Applied Statistics, 60 in Organizational Behavior, 12 in Advanced Mathematics, and 60 in Mao Zedong Thought; I want to ask what you got?"

Fu Yiming stood up abruptly: "Second Brother, you failed that many subjects?"

Yang Tianxing nodded in tacit admission.

"Hahahaha!"

Fu Yiming laughed heartily with his hands on his hips: "Damn, I only failed two subjects and felt so sad I wanted to cry. I didn't expect that you, as the class monitor, only passed one subject. With you at the bottom, what do I have to fear? Screw reading."

As he spoke, he stuffed the book he had just taken out back into his bag.

"Going online?"

Yang Tianxing asked.

"Let's go, let's go, there will definitely be a lot of people online today."

Fu Yiming grabbed his wallet and was the first to leave.

Yang Tianxing looked at the stunned Song Fei and Yi Min: "Learn from your brother; problems must be solved at the root."

After arriving at the internet cafe in Hejiaying, they discovered that there were still quite a lot of internet-addicted youths; it seemed everyone had been stifled during the winter break.

The four of them waited for more than half an hour before a spot opened up. Fortunately, when someone's internet addiction kicks in, they don't care about such things; they put on their headphones and started a heated slaughter.

Yang Tianxing, who usually used his brain to play games, was especially excited today, and the keyboard was being tapped with a "clatter-clatter" sound.

The few in 312 looked at each other, and Yi Min said directly: "Second Brother must be lacking a woman; he's treating the keyboard like a woman."

Yang Tianxing didn't want to refute this after hearing it, because Yi Min had essentially spoken a correct piece of nonsense.

The next morning, the group shivered in the cold wind as they ran back to the dormitory. When passing the campus bulletin board in front of the office building, some student union cadres were posting an official document.

"Seems like it's about scholarships and things like that."

Song Fei had sharp eyes and made out a few words.

"Let's take a look."

Yang Tianxing walked over.

Fu Yiming was starving and wanted to go to the canteen to eat; he said impatiently: "Old Second, you're a guy who only passed two subjects, and you have the nerve to look at this?"

Yi Min understood: "He's the class monitor; he definitely needs to understand the situation of our class."

Fu Yiming nodded, finally understanding, but he still stubbornly acted cool: "I thought Old Second was going to see if his own name was on it. If his name were on the bulletin board, I wouldn't even eat breakfast; I'd go eat shit."

Yang Tianxing only looked for his own class and found three names under the scholarship section.

Winner of the First-Class Scholarship for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences: Public Management Class 2, Liu Jiaoyue.

There were no students from Public Management Class 2 for the second-class scholarship.

Winners of the Third-Class Scholarship for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences: Public Management Class 2, Liu Qiqi and He Yulin.

It was unquestionable that Liu Jiaoyue would get a scholarship, and the other two were also representatives of studying hard in the class, so it was not unexpected.

Just then, Song Fei suddenly pointed to another bulletin board and said: "Second Brother, come look quickly; there's someone here with the same name as you."

The few of them heard this and crowded over to take a look.

"Yo, this person is also a 'Three-Good Student' of the school. Old Second, look at you, then look at them."

"Not only the same name, but also in the same department."

"Wait, how are they even in the same class???"

The other three looked over with suspicious gazes. Yang Tianxing coughed: "Is it possible that it's actually me?"

"How is that possible!"

Fu Yiming refused to believe it even if he died: "You only passed two subjects in the exams, 12 points in Advanced Math; how the hell could you be selected as a Three-Good Student?"

Yang Tianxing explained: "My Three-Good Student status isn't because I'm good at studying, but because of the entrepreneurship stuff I've been doing; the school thinks this counts as a form of all-around development."

Everyone stopped talking at once and hung their heads gloomily as they went to the canteen to eat.

We agreed to play games together, be slackers, and fail subjects, but you secretly became a Three-Good Student? Who could stand that?

Yi Min even teasingly nudged Fu Yiming: "Old Fu, is what you said just now still valid? I happen to have diarrhea these past few days..."

"Get lost!"

The next day, classes officially began; by now, everyone no longer felt any novelty toward university life, and some were even a bit numb, because there was simply too much free time.

Of course, this excludes those with partners; normally, business at hotels is quite good during the first few days of the semester.

Counselor Xie Yu'an dragged Yang Tianxing over and gave him a good talking-to, because Yang Tianxing was the first "Three-Good Student" of the university in the Finance College to require a make-up exam; fortunately, the teachers for each subject were very accommodating and gave him passing grades during the make-up exams.

The 101 Entrepreneurship Base also officially began operations, and everything seemed unchanged, except that Wen Xiubo and Long Fuxin from the Student Union had resigned.

After hearing this, Yang Tianxing could understand; they were both third-year students, and everyone retires from the union in their fourth year, so if they hadn't become Student Union President by the last half-semester of their third year, they basically wouldn't waste their time here.

However, with two vice presidents resigning, the current Student Union President, Jiang Minling, definitely needed help.

Sure enough, less than two weeks after the start of the semester, the External Liaison Department announced a meeting.

But before the meeting, Jiang Minling and Zhang Wei suddenly found Yang Tianxing.

"Tianxing, Wen Xiubo and Long Fuxin have left, and I plan to nominate Zhang Wei as vice president."

Jiang Minling spoke up and said.

This matter was not unexpected; Yang Tianxing thought to himself that if he were the Student Union President, he would definitely promote his own cronies, so he said to Zhang Wei: "Congratulations, President Zhang."

"Don't congratulate me; you should also congratulate yourself."

Zhang Wei said with a smile: "Regarding the position of Minister of the External Liaison Department, Senior Sister Jiang and I both feel that it belongs to you."

Yang Tianxing immediately asked: "Then what about Senior Xun?"

Zhang Wei hesitated slightly: "Xun Can is a very good person, but his ability isn't as strong as yours, and those older officers seem to only submit to your management; Xun Can might not be able to keep them in line."

Yang Tianxing pondered and said nothing.

Seeing that Yang Tianxing had not agreed, Jiang Minling asked: "Do you have some concerns?"

Yang Tianxing nodded: "I reckon I'll be quite busy this semester; of course, that's only one aspect. On the other hand, Senior Xun is very honest in his work. If I become the minister, he will probably only ever be able to write 'Vice Minister of the External Liaison Department' on his resume."

"Let him be the minister this time; when Senior Sister Jiang leaves the Student Union in her fourth year and Senior Sister Zhang takes over as Student Union President, I will go be the vice president."

Yang Tianxing said with a smile.

Jiang Minling sensed that this was Yang Tianxing's sincere opinion, so she didn't say much more and pulled Zhang Wei away.

"Sister Minling, Yang Tianxing has always liked to joke; please don't take it to heart."

Zhang Wei felt that Yang Tianxing had spoken too directly just now, so she wanted to offer a few words of mediation.

Jiang Minling looked at Zhang Wei strangely for a moment.

"What is there to take to heart? I had originally planned it this way myself."
