Chapter 34: Farewell, Yulunca: David

~6 min read 1,071 words

Shortly after the monster arrived, tires screeched as a scar-faced giant walked in.

Seeing Louis, he immediately rushed over and gave him a warm hug. “Great, little Louis, I knew you’d be fine.”

Andre, like Anderson, was one of Grandfather Karl’s adopted sons, Louis’s uncle. Like Anderson, Andre was also part of the muscle team, but more versatile—he made bombs, drove tanks, piloted helicopters, and was the one who loved Louis the most, often taking him for high-speed drives.

Yes, high-speed drives.

“Cough, cough, let go, let go!”

Louis slapped the man’s horse-sized arm, nearly rolling his eyes back.

This guy was still as reckless as ever!

After chatting with Andre for a while, Louis confirmed what Anderson had said, and a heavy weight lifted from his chest.

“Here, I told you—kids need guns to protect themselves.” He handed Louis a small pistol clearly modified for special use, along with several magazines.

Louis didn’t refuse; guns really were effective.

Just as he was leaving, Andre smacked his forehead. “Shit, I just remembered—I almost forgot someone.”

He said.

He yanked two people out from the back of the car and shoved them in front of Louis. “These two have spent the most time with you. I heard they’re even lovers with that David. So I brought them along. Oh, and little Louis—sometimes you’ve got to be careful. Either keep them close enough to watch, or kill them. That’s how you keep secrets.”

Andre’s tone carried deep implication.

Louis froze, then after a moment of silence, nodded. “Understood. Go back now.”

“Got it, little Louis! See you next time! Hah!”

He said.

Engines roared to life, thundering through the surroundings before vanishing in a blur.

Only the bodyguards, who had scattered to other areas, remained, along with a terrified Yulunca and her daughter.

Now, Yulunca and Louis locked eyes.

Louis’s lips twitched. What the hell was this?

I let you go, and now you’re sent right back? Fate!

Yulunca, on the other side, felt even worse—she believed meeting David had been a mistake. A colossal mistake.

“Come on, let’s go see David.”

Yulunca nodded and obediently followed behind.

Moments later.

In the hall.

David rubbed his chin, listening to Louis, deep in thought.

Gangs… hidden… and…

His gaze settled on a card on the table, and beside it, Yulunca and her daughter.

The hall was filled with silence.

Emma and Angela had also joined the meeting, now exchanging uneasy glances.

But Emma suddenly felt a flicker of excitement.

Perfect!

The opportunity’s here!

All I need to do is tell Dad I’m scared of danger—he won’t hesitate anymore. After all, I’m his favorite daughter. Even if he has feelings for Louis, for safety’s sake, he’ll sacrifice him.

Then Louis will leave this house—and my original goal will succeed!

Emma’s lips curled slightly.

She looked at Louis, her eyes gleaming with malice.

But Louis didn’t even glance at her—his gaze remained calm.

In truth, leaving or staying made little difference to him. With family backing, he could live alone just fine.

He felt a touch of reluctance toward this family—but nothing more.

Let David decide the power himself.

Faced with this issue, David, as an adult, thought clearly.

Gangs meant danger.

Unlike the romanticized portrayals in movies, real gangs were synonymous with evil—murder, arson, gunfights, gang battles—utterly commonplace.

But…

David sighed.

He looked at Louis. “Looks like I won’t get the chance to hear you call me Dad.”

!!!

Emma’s heart leapt—Dad had made his decision! But—

“Dad, I think—”

Angela immediately clapped her hand over Emma’s mouth.

“Call me Uncle from now on. And regardless of whether you’re from a gang family, you still have to go to school. Without knowledge, even a gang won’t last long.”

“I’ll arrange with them to let you skip grades.”

David said.

???

Louis was surprised. “Uncle David, I thought…”

Angela beside him looked incredulous. “Brother, do you know what you’re doing? It’s dangerous!”

David smiled. “I know. But it’s not that dangerous—if it were, something would’ve happened by now.”

“Besides, if real enemies show up, do you think they’ll spare us for having taken in Louis?”

Given gang behavior, they definitely wouldn’t.

The Godfather-style code was rare. Violence, chaos, evil—these were the true colors of most gangs, especially in this capitalist country, where only money mattered, nothing else.

At this moment, David’s mind was clear—exactly as expected from a successful man who, as a single father, ran two small factories and provided his daughter with a privileged life.

Angela sighed beside him. David’s words were true, but emotion was surely a major factor too.

David was just too sentimental. He never thought—what if something actually happens?

Louis looked at David. Well, this man had been unlucky—he’d adopted a perverted dwarf, gotten entangled in a bad romance, and ended up needing Louis to clean up his mess—but he had to admit, the man played the father role exceptionally well.

Just as Louis thought this, David suddenly beamed. “And they brought Jenny too! That’s fantastic!”

David looked at Jenny; Jenny smiled back at him. Their smiles—one ambiguous, the other pure yet tinged with subtle allure.

Yulunca watched, her expression unreadable.

In the end, with silent, unspoken agreement among the family, everything stayed the same—except David planned to remarry, and the household, after Esther’s death, swiftly welcomed a new adopted daughter.

Night.

Louis dialed a phone.

The line connected quickly. “Cough, cough—is that little Louis?”

“Grandfather, it’s me.”

The voice on the other end grew slightly excited. “Good, good, you’re safe. How have you been these past days…”

Louis pressed his lips together and shared some happy stories.

The voice on the other end calmed.

“Andre and the others already told me. Stay there for now. The enemies here are tough. If you need anything, just ask Andre and the others.”

“Yes, Grandfather. You take care of your health too.”

He hung up.

Far away in Miami, the old man’s face was flushed. He walked to the desk and opened the drawer below the one holding the little monster’s finger.

Inside lay a furry palm with three curled fingers. The old man gently stroked it, his eyes filled with complex emotion, then carefully put it away and locked it.

“Good thing I didn’t have to use this thing.”
