Chapter 132: Special - 5 - Maelin’s Arrival

~10 min read 1,953 words

The road stretched endlessly before them, winding through hills and valleys that slowly grew wilder, less tamed by human hands. Maelin rode beside Seran Valis, her eyes constantly scanning the horizon, drinking in every change in the landscape. The volcano faded behind her, its red glow now a distant memory. In its place rose new sights: rolling green hills dotted with wildflowers, clear streams that sparkled like scattered gems, and towering trees whose branches swayed gently in the wind.

Each day brought something new, strange birds that darted through the air like flames, the scent of flowers she couldn’t name, and skies that shifted from brilliant blue to gold at sunrise, and finally into violet at dusk. Maelin’s energy was boundless; she would laugh and leap from her horse at every new wonder, sometimes racing ahead and then slowing to catch her breath, her excitement spilling over like sparks from a flame.

At last, after days of travel, the hills before them began to rise steeply. Seran Valis slowed the horse as the path twisted upward, and Maelin leaned forward, eyes wide.

"Look," she whispered, voice trembling in disbelief.

In the distance, atop the highest hill, rose the Academy. Its towers gleamed in the sunlight, carved entirely from white stone that shimmered as though alive. Massive spires stretched into the sky, their tips catching the clouds like fingers reaching for the heavens. Bridges arched gracefully between towers, and gardens filled with exotic plants cascaded down terraces. Even from this distance, Maelin could feel a hum of power in the air, subtle but unmistakable.

Her heart thumped wildly in her chest. She could feel the fire within her responding, burning brighter with each step closer.

"Is... is it real?" she breathed, almost afraid to say it aloud.

Seran Valis glanced at her, a small smile tugging at his lips. "It’s very real, Maelin. And it will become your new home for a time."

As they drew nearer, the details of the Academy grew sharper. Towers were carved with intricate runes, glowing faintly with elemental energy. Courtyards sprawled between the buildings, some lined with water features that danced with sparks of flame, others alive with fountains of air or swirling pools of water. Maelin could sense the energy in each stone, each leaf, each ripple,it was alive, welcoming, and powerful.

Her excitement was nearly uncontainable. She bounced lightly in her seat, her ponytail swinging, eyes darting from one marvel to the next. "It’s... it’s... it’s beautiful! Look at those towers! And the gardens! I’ve never seen anything like this in my life!"

Seran Valis chuckled softly. "The Academy is built to honor all elements. It was designed to awaken the potential in those who are chosen."

Maelin’s hands clenched, her pulse racing. Every beat of her heart seemed to echo the call of the place, urging her forward. She felt as though she could already sense the classrooms, the teachers, even the other students she had yet to meet. Every nerve in her body was alive with anticipation.

As they crested the final hill and the gates came into view, Maelin felt her chest swell. The white stone towers rose even taller than she had imagined, the gates carved with symbols that flickered faintly as if recognizing her presence. Her heart pounded so loudly she could almost hear it over the wind.

"I... I’m really here," she whispered, a laugh escaping her lips. "I’m really here."

Seran Valis gave a small nod. "Yes, Maelin. And your journey is only just beginning."

The massive gates of the Academy opened before Maelin, and she stepped through, feeling as though she had crossed into another world entirely. The white stone courtyards stretched wide, polished to a gleaming brightness that reflected the sunlight in sparkling shards. Fountains danced with water that twisted in shapes like spiraling flames, while wind currents shimmered in thin ribbons above the walkways, bending leaves and petals in delicate arcs. Every detail hummed with energy, the magic of the Academy alive in every stone and plant.

Maelin’s mouth fell open. She had imagined the place, of course, dreamed of it in secret during nights beside the village hearth, but nothing she had pictured came close to this. Her heart raced so fast she thought it might lift her off the ground.

Seran Valis led her down one of the wide corridors, his stride confident and calm. "First years are always struck silent when they arrive," he said, smiling down at her. "It’s natural."

Students passed by, some practicing small elemental exercises in open courtyards, others walking in pairs, discussing spells and incantations. Some glanced curiously at Maelin, others smiled kindly, though none approached her yet. The sheer size of the Academy made her feel small, yet energized, as if her fire thrummed in anticipation of the challenges and wonders ahead.

Finally, they arrived at a tall, gleaming tower, carved with intricate runes that shimmered faintly. A massive door opened as Seran approached, and he gestured for Maelin to enter. Inside, the chamber was quiet but alive. At the far end, seated behind a desk, was a figure robed in light blue trimmed with silver—Grandmaster Elion.

Maelin froze for a moment. The Grandmaster’s presence was immense, yet calm, like a steady flame that did not waver. His eyes, sharp and kind, studied her briefly before a small, welcoming smile appeared.

"Maelin," he said, his voice resonant yet gentle, "Elder Thoren has informed me of your arrival. You carry fire within you, a rare and precious gift."

Maelin swallowed, heart pounding. "I... I didn’t mean to... I just..." Her words stumbled. Excitement, awe, and nervousness collided in her chest.

Elion’s smile widened slightly. "You need not explain yourself. Gifts such as yours cannot be hidden, nor should they be. Here, you will learn to master it. Control it. Let it grow. You are ready."

He held out a small crystal token, glowing faintly with an orange hue. "This will mark your place in the Academy. Keep it close. It will guide you, protect you, and help you attune to your element."

Maelin’s hands shook slightly as she accepted it. The moment her fingers closed around the crystal, a warmth spread through her hand, gentle yet thrilling. The fire inside her stirred in response, dancing with excitement.

"You are welcome here, Maelin," Grandmaster Elion said, leaning back slightly. "Now, you will be shown to your quarters. You may rest, organize your belongings, and prepare. There is much to learn, but first, you must settle in."

A young guide appeared at the door, bowing politely. "I will show you to your room, first-year Maelin," she said. Her smile was warm and reassuring.

Maelin followed her through winding corridors and up a wide staircase carved from white stone that shimmered faintly with elemental runes. The halls were alive with quiet energy; light twisted along the walls, forming patterns that shifted and danced like living fire. Her pulse quickened with every step.

Finally, they arrived at a door carved with her name and a small rune glowing softly. The guide pushed it open.

Maelin’s eyes widened in amazement. The room was larger than any she had ever seen in the village. High ceilings arched gracefully overhead, carved with flowing symbols that seemed to shift subtly with the light. A soft bed covered with blankets in hues of orange and gold waited in the corner, while a desk and shelves lined with strange, glowing objects stretched along one wall. Large windows opened onto a balcony overlooking the Academy grounds, where gardens of vibrant elemental plants swayed gently in the wind.

Every corner of the room seemed to hum with quiet magic, whispering possibilities she could not yet imagine. Her chest tightened with joy, her heart racing as though it wanted to leap from her body.

"This... this is incredible," she whispered, stepping further inside. She ran her fingers along the edge of the desk, touched the window frame, and even leaned over the balcony rail, marveling at the sprawling gardens below. Every breath she took felt electric, alive, full of promise.

The guide smiled, waiting patiently as Maelin explored every detail. "You will grow to know this place well," she said softly. "But for now, enjoy your first moments here. Let it inspire you."

Maelin turned, eyes shining, a grin splitting her face. "I... I can’t wait to see what else is here. To see everything."

The guide nodded. "And you will, Maelin. One step at a time."

Maelin took a deep breath, standing tall in the center of her new room. Her fire thrummed inside her, eager and alive. She had crossed the threshold into a world she had only dreamed of. And now, with the token warm in her hand and the Academy stretching before her, she felt a thrill unlike any she had known, excitement for the learning, for the challenges, for the adventures that awaited.

She could hardly wait to begin.

After a short rest, Maelin sat on the edge of her bed, her legs swinging slightly as she stared out of the wide window. The early afternoon sun washed the Academy grounds in warm light, illuminating the white stone towers and glistening gardens. From this height, everything looked alive, vibrant, and brimming with possibilities.

Below, she could see students walking along the wide paths between towers. Some moved in pairs, laughing quietly, while others carried books or objects that shimmered with elemental energy. A small group was being led by a guide, just as she had been, through the main entrance. The guide’s voice was calm and instructive, pointing out features of the grounds while the students listened with attentive eyes.

Maelin’s fingers clenched the window ledge, her heart thumping with barely-contained excitement. She could feel the fire in her chest answering the pulse of the Academy itself. Every flicker of movement below sparked curiosity, every laugh, every swirl of wind or shimmer of magic made her pulse quicken.

She leaned closer to the glass, studying a student who seemed to be practicing with a small ball of flame in their palm. The flame danced and twisted, controlled and elegant, just as she hoped one day she might control hers. Another student was coaxing water into delicate shapes, forming intricate spirals and arcs, the droplets suspended for a heartbeat in the sun before settling back into a fountain.

Maelin pressed her cheek against the cool glass, almost trembling with excitement. All of this... it’s all here. And it’s all mine to discover.

Her thoughts ran ahead, imagining what she could learn, what secrets she might uncover. Perhaps there were hidden libraries filled with ancient texts, or classrooms where fire, water, wind, and earth could be bent in ways she had never imagined. Maybe she would find hidden paths through the towers, gardens with strange plants, or mentors who could teach her to make her fire leap higher, burn brighter, and bend to her will.

She could hardly contain herself. Her fingers fidgeted with the token Grandmaster Elion had given her, its faint warmth grounding her even as her imagination soared.

A laugh escaped her lips, soft and bubbling, the sound full of the same energy that had always made her a little whirlwind back in her village. "This... this is amazing," she whispered. "I wonder what else I can find here... what I will find..."

She lingered at the window for a long while, watching, imagining, and planning. The Academy was no longer just a place she had traveled to, it was a world waiting to be explored. And Maelin could feel it in every fiber of her being: her fire was ready, and so was she.
