Chapter 264: Relic of Plants

~11 min read 2,170 words

The next morning, the group packed up their small camp, still marveling at the soft glow of the subterranean forest. As they moved forward, the moss beneath their feet seemed to pulse gently, almost as if it recognized their presence. Tiny flickers of movement hinted at creatures hidden within the foliage, moss blending perfectly with their shapes.

Lira led the way, senses alert, as the others followed. Occasionally, a whisper of wind, a shimmer of light, or a barely perceptible rustle guided them. Slowly, shapes began to emerge from the moss—tall, thin figures, their forms vaguely humanoid but constructed entirely of living moss and vines. Their eyes glowed faintly with green light. They spoke in soft, murmuring voices that resonated like the rustle of leaves.

"Travelers... seekers..." they intoned, stepping fully from the moss only long enough to gesture toward a narrow clearing ahead. Then, as quickly as they appeared, they melted back into the moss, leaving no trace but the feeling that the forest itself had guided them.

In the clearing, a small mound of soil caught Lira’s attention. It glowed faintly, bathed in the filtered light of the underground canopy. Atop it grew a strange cluster of plants, unlike anything she had seen. Leaves shimmered with silver veins, roots twining around a tiny, crystalline shard embedded in the earth.

Lira knelt, brushing the soil gently. "This... is a relic of growth," she whispered. "These plants... they enhance life around them. Anything nearby will grow stronger, healthier. This is perfect for the grove."

Renkai tilted his head. "So... we can take them?"

"Yes," Lira said, carefully uprooting the cluster, keeping roots intact and cradling the relic. "We’ll need to protect them. But they’ll bring blessings wherever we plant them."

Thalanir nodded approvingly. "It’s rare to find something like this. The forest shares its treasures only with those who respect it."

Patricia and Maelin leaned in, inspecting the glowing leaves. "We should return to the academy," Patricia said softly. "These plants... relics like this could help countless groves, gardens, even forests in need."

Lira agreed, weighing the decision. "Yes, we should. But we can come back. There’s more hidden here—more plants, maybe more relics—but for now, we take what we’ve found."

Serelyth, hovering above in her majestic white form, extended her wings. "I can carry them safely to your grove. You will need to give instructions on planting and care. They are delicate but will flourish under proper guidance."

Lira smiled, gently placing the bundle of glowing plants and relics into Serelyth’s grasp. "Be careful," she said. "Here are the roots, the prepared packets, and the relics. Plant them carefully, spaced for light and water flow. Anything touching the relics must be treated with care—let their energy guide the growth, not force it. They’ll thrive if you follow the balance."

Serelyth inclined her head. "Understood. They will reach the grove safely."

Lira glanced at her companions, nodding. "We’ll return one day. But for now... this is enough for the academy and the grove to flourish."

With a graceful leap into the air, Serelyth carried the precious cargo, wings slicing through the forest with ease. The shimmering plants and carefully packaged roots were cradled securely, the relics glowing faintly in her grasp.

The group watched as Serelyth vanished into the subterranean light above, feeling a mixture of relief and pride. Lira whispered to herself, brushing her hands over Fluffy’s fur, "This is just the beginning... the grove will grow stronger, and so will we."

They continued through the forest, the faint hum of moss creatures and the distant ripple of energy reminding them that the world still held countless secrets, waiting for those patient and daring enough to seek them.

The group finally reached the edge of the underground forest. Light from the surface filtered in through cracks in the earth, casting dappled patterns on the mossy floor. Birdsong and the rustle of wind reminded them that they were returning to the world above, yet the lingering hum of the forest beneath still clung to their senses.

As they moved forward, the terrain changed—roots gave way to soft soil, and patches of grass began to appear. The forest above was dense but alive with color, sunlight glinting through high canopies. The air smelled sweet, a mixture of earth, flowers, and distant water.

Lira paused, her senses tingling. Something—or someone—was moving ahead. She signaled for the group to stop. From a bend in the trail, a small group of humans emerged, looking exhausted and disoriented. Their clothing was torn, and their faces pale from hunger and worry.

One of them, a young man with tousled hair, stepped forward hesitantly. "Hello? Can... can anyone help us? We’ve been trying to find the road for days. We’re completely lost."

Renkai tilted his head, sniffing the air. "They’re humans... and definitely exhausted. Lost, yes, but not dangerous."

Thalanir stepped forward, calm and reassuring. "You’re safe now. Follow us. We’ll guide you to water and shelter, and then you can rest."

The humans exchanged wary glances. A young woman spoke up, her voice trembling, "We... we were supposed to reach the next village. But we kept walking and walking... and nothing looks familiar."

Patricia knelt, smiling gently. "You’re not alone anymore. Rest is the first step—we’ll make sure you’re fed and safe."

Lira walked forward, kneeling to meet their eyes. "We’ll help you," she said softly. "We know the forest can be confusing. But you need to trust us—and take it slow. We’re traveling, but we can guide you to a safe place."

The humans visibly relaxed, relief washing over their faces. The group led them through winding trails, mossy clearings, and streams sparkling with sunlight. Fluffy darted ahead, sniffing the ground, while Serelyth hovered above in her white dragon form, scanning for dangers from the air.

Along the way, Lira noticed something unusual: the humans’ steps seemed to leave faint glimmers of light behind them—tiny traces that shimmered for a moment before fading. "That’s strange," she murmured to herself. "The forest... it’s reacting to them."

The group reached a wide clearing, perfect for setting up a temporary camp. Lira, Renkai, Thalanir, Maelin, and Patricia worked quickly to make the humans comfortable. Warm drinks were brewed, and small fires lit. The newcomers sat wearily, drinking in the warmth and safety, their eyes still wide with awe at the glowing moss and subtle magic of the surroundings.

The evening passed peacefully. Lira sat near the fire, watching the humans relax. She admitted quietly to the group, "I didn’t expect to see this many different creatures, beings... and now humans who are truly in need. The world is far bigger than I imagined."

Renkai, shifting into his humanoid form, laughed lightly, shaking off a trace of dirt. "It keeps getting stranger—and better. I’m starting to think every turn we take will bring surprises like this."

Thalanir smiled, patting a young boy gently on the shoulder. "And sometimes, these surprises remind us why we journey—to protect, to learn, and to guide."

As night fell, the glowing moss cast soft green light across the camp, and the faint hum of hidden forest creatures seemed to lull everyone into calm. Even Fluffy curled up beside Lira, purring softly.

Above, the canopy rustled with whispers of wind and secrets. Somewhere deeper in the forest, unseen, moss beings watched the travelers carefully, fading back into their hidden realm, knowing that these newcomers—both Lira’s team and the lost humans—were part of something larger, a thread woven into the forest’s enduring story.

The next morning, the humans stirred early, still rubbing sleep from their eyes. Lira sat nearby, Fluffy perched on her lap, while the others packed supplies and prepared to continue. The young man who had first spoken cleared his throat, looking hesitant.

"We... we weren’t just lost," he admitted, voice low. "Something pushed us off the path. Strange lights, shadows... and creatures in the forest that... that weren’t normal."

The group exchanged glances. Renkai’s ears twitched, his fox tail flicking with alertness. "What kind of creatures?" he asked cautiously.

The young woman spoke next, her voice trembling. "We saw shapes in the trees... like animals, but taller... and glowing eyes. And sometimes... the forest itself seemed to move, like it didn’t want us there."

Thalanir’s amber eyes narrowed, studying the area. "That aligns with what we’ve been sensing. This forest holds powers older than most understand—moss creatures, tree guardians, maybe more. It protects itself, sometimes aggressively."

Lira nodded, understanding. "You were pushed, yes, but also guided. That’s why you found us. You weren’t entirely lost—you were being directed here for help."

The humans’ eyes widened. "Directed... by what?" the young man asked.

"By the forest itself," Patricia said gently. "It watches. It reacts. It doesn’t always speak in ways we understand."

Lira rose, walking to the edge of the clearing. "We can guide you safely, but we need to move carefully. Not every path is safe. And... there are beings you haven’t seen, guardians hidden among moss and trees. You must trust us and follow instructions."

As they prepared to leave, the faint shimmer of moss along the forest floor seemed to twitch and ripple. Tiny lights danced, forming shapes that looked almost like small humanoid figures. Whispered voices floated just above the ground, unintelligible but melodic.

"Ah," Thalanir murmured, kneeling to touch the moss. "The moss beings are here. They’ve been watching us. They will guide us where the forest itself is safe for travel."

Lira’s heart quickened. "Moss beings?"

"Yes," Thalanir said. "They are shy, but intelligent. They dwell in moss and lichen, hidden until someone truly in need passes. They are tied to the forest, guardians of hidden paths and protective spirits. If we listen carefully, they will show us the safest way."

The group followed as Thalanir led the humans slowly forward. From the moss along the roots and stones, faint forms began to emerge—tiny humanoid shapes, translucent and glowing softly, moving gracefully like drifting mist. They pointed and gestured, directing the group away from roots that might trap them or patches of poisonous plants.

Some of the moss beings spoke in musical tones, words transforming into visions that Lira could feel in her mind—a language of the forest, understood through Spirit and elemental connection. The creatures seemed to vanish as quickly as they appeared, melting back into moss, leaving trails of sparkling dew on the forest floor.

Renkai whispered, "It’s like they’re showing us the forest’s secret veins... paths no ordinary traveler could ever find."

The humans followed closely, awe and cautious respect in their eyes. One of the young boys reached forward, trying to touch a moss being—but it flickered and vanished instantly, leaving only a soft chime in the air.

"Don’t worry," Lira said with a smile, "they’ll reveal what you need when necessary. They don’t like to be disturbed, but they are allies."

For hours, the group moved through the hidden veins of the forest, following subtle signs only Thalanir and Lira could read: moss glimmering slightly brighter in one direction, leaves swaying without wind to indicate a path, faint pulsing lights guiding their way.

By evening, they emerged onto a sunlit glade, surrounded by towering trees and blooming flowers. A small stream babbled nearby, the water clear and pure. The humans knelt, cupping water in their hands, relief and gratitude washing over their faces.

"You’ve saved us," the young woman whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "I never thought... we would see safety again."

Lira smiled softly, watching the humans drink. "You were meant to find help," she said. "And now you have it. But remember—the forest watches. Respect it, and it will guide you."

Fluffy jumped into her lap, purring. Serelyth hovered above, wings partially folded, eyes scanning the treetops. Renkai shifted back into fox form, stretching lazily, though his eyes never left the surrounding woods.

Maelin looked around, amazed. "I didn’t know a forest could feel alive like this... like it’s thinking, protecting itself."

Patricia nodded. "And not just protecting... guiding. It’s almost... intelligent."

Thalanir smiled faintly. "It is. And now you’ve seen its depth. The moss beings, the tree spirits—they’re its eyes and ears. Remember this path. It is not just for the lost, but for those who can hear the forest’s heartbeat."

The humans rested nearby, finally allowing themselves a full meal. The team gathered around the fire as night settled over the glade, the stars peeking through the canopy. The forest hummed softly, alive and watchful, while the moss beings peeked from the shadows, unseen but present, their guidance leaving a lasting impression.

Lira leaned back, whispering, "I didn’t expect to see so many different beings... or to witness their will so clearly. This... this is why we travel."

Renkai grinned. "And I think we’re only scratching the surface."

The night passed in quiet wonder, and as dawn approached, the forest seemed to breathe with anticipation—its secrets still hidden, but its path forward illuminated for those who could see.
