Chapter 270: Return to Academy

The journey back to the academy was smooth and swift. Serelyth had returned at dawn, her great wings stirring the morning mist into silver ribbons as she landed in the clearing. Her eyes gleamed as she saw the bundles of carefully wrapped plants, vials of collected seeds, and the faint shimmer of relic energy still clinging to Lira and Sylvara.

"You’ve done well," Serelyth said, shifting into her humanoid form for a moment. "The forest seems to like you." She offered a faint smile toward Sylvara, who still looked awestruck by everything she’d seen. "Are you ready for your first flight?"

Sylvara glanced at Lira, her heart pounding in her chest, but she nodded eagerly. "I’ve never flown before."

"Then you’ll remember this day for a long time," Serelyth replied.

The dragon spread her great white wings, and one by one the group climbed onto her back. Fluffy nestled in beside Lira’s side, wrapping its soft tail around her waist as if claiming its spot. As Serelyth rose into the air, the forest fell away beneath them, shrinking into a rolling green carpet.

Sylvara gasped as wind rushed past her face, tears stinging her eyes from the force of it. The world was wide, endless, and breathtaking. The sun painted the horizon in gold, and below them, rivers glimmered like threads of silver.

Lira leaned closer so Sylvara could hear her over the wind. "This is what freedom feels like," she said softly.

Sylvara smiled wide, her hands clutching the dragon’s scales. "Then I don’t ever want to go back to hiding in the forest."

Hours later, the familiar towers and domes of the Elemental Academy came into view, standing proud among misty mountains. Gardens sprawled around it, greenhouses sparkling faintly with protection wards. The Grove in the fog forest shimmered in the distance, home to Lira’s plants and relics.

As Serelyth descended gracefully, the wind stirred through the courtyards, drawing the attention of a few students who stared wide-eyed at the dragon’s arrival. They landed softly on the stone platform near the main entrance.

Renkai stretched, shifting into his humanoid form, his fox ears flicking lazily. "Ah, home. Or at least... the closest thing we’ve got to one."

Thalanir gave a faint nod, his antlers catching the sun as he spoke. "I’ll take a rest at the grove. Those relics need to settle into the soil."

Renkai smirked. "And I’ll make sure no one steals the good sleeping spot under that old willow."

"Of course you will," Lira teased gently, watching them walk down the path into the misty forest grove.

Sylvara followed closely behind Lira as they approached the academy gates. She wore a nervous but bright expression, clutching the small leather pouch where a few of the jackalopes’ gifted seeds were stored. "I... never thought I’d end up in a place like this," she admitted quietly. "I was always just... hiding."

Lira placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "That’s how a lot of us started. But the world is bigger than fear. And you belong here if you choose to."

They entered the great marble hall, its high ceiling etched with glowing runes. The air smelled faintly of parchment, herbs, and magic—calm and alive. At the far end of the hall stood Grandmaster Elion, his long robes embroidered with silver threads that shimmered like stars. His sharp blue eyes softened as he saw Lira approach.

"Lira," Elion greeted warmly. "You’ve returned. And with quite the harvest, if the relic signature I felt is correct."

"Yes, Grandmaster," Lira said, bowing slightly. "We found a relic grove, guided by forest creatures. The plants and seeds are already at the grove. But this..." She gently guided Sylvara forward. "This is Sylvara. She’s a multielement user—air and earth. She’s decided she wants to join the academy."

Sylvara lowered her head respectfully, her voice soft but steady. "Grandmaster Elion, I... wish to learn. I want to understand what I can do. I want to grow stronger."

Elion studied her for a long moment. Then, slowly, he smiled. "Two elements... It has been many years since I’ve seen someone with such affinity outside the old records. You’re welcome here, Sylvara. We will nurture what you carry, not suppress it."

Sylvara’s eyes shone with a mixture of relief and joy. She bowed deeply. "Thank you. I’ll do my best."

Elion turned to Lira. "You’ve been a magnet for destiny lately," he said with a faint chuckle. "Relics, rare creatures, now another multielement user."

Lira laughed softly, rubbing the back of her neck. "I didn’t plan any of it. It just... happened."

"That," Elion replied, "is usually how the most important things begin."

They walked deeper into the hall, and Elion began explaining how Sylvara’s initiation into the academy would work. A room would be prepared for her, and she’d begin with basic control training the next morning. Lira offered to mentor her personally on her earth and air balance, and Elion approved without hesitation.

As evening fell, Lira stepped outside onto one of the terraces, feeling the mountain breeze in her hair. She looked toward the distant fog forest where Renkai and Thalanir rested, the grove now alive with the power of the plants they’d brought home.

Sylvara joined her quietly, her expression peaceful. "Thank you... for finding me," she said softly. "If your team hadn’t come, I’d still be hiding, not knowing what I could become."

Lira smiled at her, warm and genuine. "We didn’t just find you, Sylvara. You were meant to walk this path. And now... we’ll make it a good one."

The sun hung low over the academy, casting warm golden light through the high arched windows. Lira walked along the stone path toward the greenhouse with Fluffy perched comfortably on her shoulder. The little creature nuzzled into her neck, its soft fur warm against her skin.

The greenhouse was one of her favorite places in the world. Its glass panels caught the light like crystal, and a soft mist hung in the air, filling it with the scent of herbs, damp soil, and magic. The moment she stepped inside, her shoulders relaxed.

Rows upon rows of plants filled the space—some mundane, some strange, glowing faintly with their own inner light. Vines whispered as if greeting her, and flowers swayed even though there was no wind. In the corner, the newly transplanted relic plants shimmered faintly, their roots already digging deep into enchanted soil.

"Hello, my darlings," Lira murmured, gently brushing her fingers over a set of glowing leaves. Fluffy hopped down onto the workbench, sniffing curiously at a potted seedling.

A voice came from deeper inside the greenhouse, calm and warm. "Back from another adventure already?"

Lira turned with a small smile. Thara stood by the irrigation runes, a woven basket in her arms. She was one of the older caretakers of the grove and greenhouse—wise, grounded, and steady. Her silver hair was tied in a braid down her back, and her hands were stained with soil.

"Yes," Lira replied, stepping closer. "And this time... with a lot more plants than I expected. Serelyth already brought most of them in. I wanted to check if they’re adjusting."

Thara gave a soft chuckle, setting her basket down. "They’ve been humming all morning. Whatever forest you brought them from, they like it here." She gestured to the relic plants in the corner. "Those ones, though, they’re... powerful. It’s been a while since I’ve felt soil sing like that."

Lira knelt beside the relic plants, gently brushing her hand across the base of their stems. The faint pulse of magic answered her touch, warm and steady. "I thought the same thing. They feel... old. Like they remember more than they should."

Thara crouched beside her, her eyes soft. "Relic flora often does. They hold echoes of the places they’ve grown in. If nurtured carefully, they can become guardians of a grove. But mishandle them..."

"They turn dangerous," Lira finished quietly. She remembered the faint dark fog lingering in that forest, and how easily nature could be twisted.

Thara nodded. "Exactly. But I trust you, child. You’ve got a way with them. Plants listen to you because you listen back."

Lira smiled faintly, pressing her palm to the soil. "I’ll make sure they thrive here."

Fluffy gave a soft chirp, batting at a leaf that glowed when touched. Lira laughed under her breath and gently scooped him up before he could knock something over. "And you’ll stop eating the glowing flowers this time, right?"

Thara chuckled warmly. "He’s a curious one. I like him. Reminds me of when I first took care of a grove spirit decades ago."

Lira leaned against the workbench, letting her gaze wander over the greenhouse. Everything here was alive—breathing, growing, glowing softly in the twilight. It felt like a heartbeat she could always come back to.

Thara watched her for a moment, then spoke softly. "You’ve changed, Lira. When you first came here, you barely looked at the world around you. Now you’re carrying it with you, piece by piece."

Lira blinked, caught off guard by the kindness in those words. "I... guess the world didn’t leave me much choice," she admitted quietly. "But it’s strange. Every journey we take, I feel like I’m finding pieces of something bigger."

Thara tilted her head. "Maybe you are. The land doesn’t call to just anyone. It remembers its chosen."

Lira let those words settle in the air. They felt heavier than they sounded, as if there was a truth buried inside them that she wasn’t ready to fully see yet.

Outside, the last light of day faded into soft blue dusk. The greenhouse glimmered like a lantern in the growing darkness. Fluffy curled into her arms, purring faintly, and for the first time in weeks, Lira felt deeply, peacefully at home.

Thara rose, picking up her basket again. "Come find me tomorrow if you want to work on their root bonding. I’ll set aside a few wards to keep their magic from overwhelming the others."

"I will," Lira promised with a nod.

As Thara walked away down the stone path, Lira lingered among the plants, listening to their quiet songs. The relic leaves whispered of faraway groves and hidden powers.
