Chapter 271: My old grove

~8 min read 1,541 words

Lira stepped through the shimmering portal, Fluffy padding beside her, his small cat-like form nimble and curious. The familiar scent of earth and herbs greeted her, wrapping around her like a protective embrace. She blinked as sunlight filtered through the canopy above—the soft, golden rays catching on dew-kissed leaves.

Renkai, Thalanir, and Serelyth were already waiting beneath the ancient tree at the grove’s heart. Serelyth, in her majestic dragon form, lowered her head gracefully, scales gleaming faintly in the sun, while Renkai shifted back into his fox form, tail flicking lazily. Thalanir stood tall, eyes scanning the grove with a calm, grounding presence.

Home. Lira felt it deep in her chest, the rare, profound comfort of belonging. The old giant tree, its roots twisting into the earth like a guardian, seemed to pulse with quiet welcome, leaves rustling in acknowledgment of her return.

Fluffy leapt onto a nearby stone, tail high and ears twitching, purring loudly. Lira smiled. Even the little cat-like creature seemed relieved to be back in the grove, where magic and familiarity intertwined.

She walked to her table beneath the great tree, hands brushing over empty vials and baskets of freshly revitalized herbs. Each leaf, each root, carried the pulse of the grove, as if the forest itself had nurtured them in her absence. She inhaled deeply, closing her eyes. Peace.

Serelyth lowered herself to the ground, transforming into her humanoid form with long, flowing white hair. "It feels right," she murmured, "to see you here, Lira. You’ve been away long enough to chase destinies—but the grove has waited patiently."

Renkai padded closer, his fox eyes sparkling with curiosity. "And you brought all those treasures from the Isle of Resonance?" His nose twitched. "I hope they fit in your magical storage... you’re going to have a lot of work planting these."

Lira chuckled softly, patting Fluffy, who rolled onto his back for a belly rub. "Yes, and Serelyth will help transport the heavier bundles of herbs and relics. I’ve already prepared instructions for planting, so everything will take root safely."

Thalanir stepped forward, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Take your time here, Lira. We’ve all been through so much... this grove is yours to rest, but also to grow. The others are nearby if you need them."

Lira nodded, a warm smile tugging at her lips. The grove was alive, yet peaceful—a delicate balance of magic and home. She moved among the plants, checking each one carefully, noting which herbs thrived, which needed extra care, and how the elemental energies from her travels had subtly influenced growth.

Fluffy followed, weaving between her legs, occasionally leaping onto a table to inspect a leaf or sniff a vial. His soft purring was a steady heartbeat in the grove, a reminder of quiet companionship.

Serelyth and Renkai settled near the giant tree, watching as Lira busied herself. Thalanir began tending to the earth around the grove, roots shifting slightly as he infused the soil with protective energy.

Hours passed in calm, purposeful motion. Lira carefully packed away relics and seedlings, cataloging their magical properties and preparing them for the academy. Her hands worked with precision, yet her heart remained light—the peace of the grove infusing her movements.

Finally, she paused, leaning back against the trunk of the ancient tree. Fluffy curled up on her lap, warm and soft, his purring now steady and content. Lira let her eyes drift closed, listening to the subtle hum of the grove: the wind in the leaves, the faint trickle of a hidden stream, the quiet resonance of magic in the soil.

"This... this is what I was missing," she whispered softly. "Not just adventure, not just power... but home. And now, I can grow both."

Serelyth’s voice cut softly through the grove, calm and approving. "You’ve learned much, Lira. Now, here, you can cultivate it, not just in plants or spells, but in yourself."

Renkai, fox curled lazily nearby, added with a teasing grin, "And in your companions too, don’t forget. We’ll keep the grove lively—though I suspect Fluffy might claim most of it for himself."

Lira laughed quietly, brushing her fingers through Fluffy’s fur. The little creature opened one eye, then closed it again, content.

The sun dipped lower, casting long shadows across the grove. The companions sat in comfortable silence, the weight of their journeys slowly giving way to quiet joy. The grove was more than just a home—it was a sanctuary, a place to gather strength before the world called them forward again.

Lira stepped back, eyes sweeping over the span of earth behind the ancient tree. The soil lay untouched, dark and rich, waiting to be transformed. "This will be our new section," she said, her voice carrying a mixture of determination and awe. "Everything we’ve gathered on our journeys—the seeds, the relics, the plants—they need a proper home. I can’t do it alone. I need your help."

Renkai gave a long sigh, stretching his fox legs. "I swear, every time we travel somewhere, you come back with half the world in your bag." Yet, there was no true complaint in his tone, only a resigned amusement.

Thalanir crouched, hands brushing over the soil. "Earth is patient," he said softly. "I can feel it, responding to what you want to grow. Let me help anchor the roots and channels of energy beneath."

Serelyth, still in her humanoid form for now, nodded. Her wings flicked slightly, balancing her as she leaned forward. "I’ll help too. Though I must admit... my dragon form would probably crush everything if I tried. This smaller form feels almost... clumsy." She laughed, a low, melodic sound, and they all smiled.

Lira opened her spatial bag, and the first small bundle of delicate seedlings floated out. Fluffy padded after it, his curious nose twitching, sniffing each new plant as it landed softly on the prepared soil. Lira knelt, carefully arranging the first row of seeds in neat lines. "These will need water, air, and earth energy combined. Thalanir, can you help channel the soil’s magic here?"

Thalanir smiled and placed his hands over the row. Slowly, faint green tendrils of energy seeped from the soil, wrapping gently around the seeds, guiding their roots downward. The ground vibrated softly under their touch, as though the plants themselves were responding to their combined care.

Renkai crouched beside them, digging small trenches with his paws, shifting between fox and partial human form to better handle the tools. "You really know what you’re doing," he muttered, impressed despite himself. "Even I can feel the energy in the soil."

Serelyth carefully lifted a cluster of larger plants from Lira’s bag, each glowing faintly with residual elemental energy. "These need space," she said, adjusting them in the rows. "Too close, and they’ll compete. Too far, and they won’t share their magic." She gestured for Lira to guide her hands, and together they placed each plant into the earth with careful precision.

Hours passed, filled with the soft sounds of digging, rustling leaves, and the occasional purr or mew from Fluffy as he inspected the growing rows. Lira moved tirelessly, planting seeds that would give off rare herbs, fruits of incredible flavor, and even small magical sprouts that hummed with latent energy.

"Careful with that one," Lira warned as Serelyth set down a glowing vine. "Its roots respond to wind and light. Make sure it’s not buried too deep."

Fluffy leapt onto a nearby pile of soil, batting gently at a stray leaf before settling back to watch Lira’s movements. His small presence brought a sense of calm amidst the physical effort, his soft fur brushing against her leg as she knelt.

Renkai leaned back, tail flicking, wiping dirt from his paws. "These seeds better repay us with something spectacular. Otherwise, I’m blaming you, Lira." He smirked, but the enthusiasm in his eyes betrayed him.

Thalanir guided the larger plants into lines, murmuring softly to the soil. With each word, roots extended further, intertwining with hidden channels of energy, securing the young plants as though the earth itself recognized their importance. "It responds to care," he said simply. "To patience."

Serelyth, even in her smaller form, struggled with some of the larger bundles. She huffed, adjusting her stance as she carefully lowered a luminous shrub into its new bed. "Almost like carrying a miniature moon," she murmured, laughing softly at the weight of the magic in her hands.

Lira moved from row to row, checking each plant after placement. She whispered encouragements, small energies pulsing from her fingertips to calm the seedlings and awaken latent growth. Some seeds shimmered faintly, taking in the elemental energy around them, reaching toward the sky even before roots fully settled.

"Next," Lira said, pointing to a batch of rare flowering plants, "we need a combination of fire and water to awaken their blooms." Maelin wasn’t here, but Lira channeled her own elemental fire softly, balancing it with ambient water currents from the grove. Serelyth helped with wind, stirring gentle currents to disperse energy evenly.

Renkai jawned softly in delight as one row of plants shimmered with life, tiny buds opening in perfect synchrony. "I’ll admit, that was satisfying," he said, a rare grin crossing his face.
