Chapter 379: Mission for Elemental Berry Bush
The night was still, touched only by the faint chiming of luminescent petals brushing against one another. Lira stood beneath the Giant Tree, her hands gently pressed to its moss-covered bark. She felt the old spirit stirring before it spoke—a deep, warm pulse that vibrated through the entire Grove.
"Lira... another gap reveals itself."
The leaves rustled like a slow exhale.
"Your Grove holds creatures of flame, soil, wind, and growth. They thrive. Yet the flow of elemental energy itself remains unbalanced."
Lira frowned softly. "What do you mean?"
A soft glow radiated from the trunk, and images flickered within the bark—Fénix resting after long flights, elemental diggers pausing after shifting earth, night blooms wilting slightly during heavy magic activity.
"All beings here—both plants and animals—draw on elemental currents. But without a source that replenishes the flow, the land will tire."
Lira felt her heart quicken. "So we need... something to restore elemental energy naturally?"
The Giant Tree vibrated with approval.
"Yes. In ancient wild forests, there grew a species known as Essenceberry Bushes. Their berries were small jewels of condensed elemental power—harmless to eat, yet potent enough to recharge even weakened magical beings."
Serelyth, who had been perched on a low branch, tilted her head in interest.
"Essenceberries... I’ve read of them. They glow in different colors depending on which element they’re saturated with."
"Correct," the Giant Tree rumbled.
"Fire-born berries shimmer like embers. Water-born berries glisten like morning dew. Air-born berries shine like captured starlight. Earth-born berries glow with root-deep warmth. Together, they restore balance to a magical ecosystem."
Thalanir stepped closer, eyes bright with curiosity.
"Where do we find them? Are they nearby?"
A heavy silence answered him first.
Then the Giant Tree spoke slowly.
"They grow only in one place now: the Ruined Garden of Aranthil... a forgotten sanctuary once tended by elemental druids. Time has overtaken it. Vines choke the pathways. Old guardian spirits slumber—or lash out. The bushes survive only in the deepest heart of that garden."
Renkai muttered under his breath,
"...So, dangerous."
"Yes," the Giant Tree agreed.
"But necessary."
Its branches swayed, dropping a faint dust of glowing pollen over Lira.
"Your mission, Lira: seek the surviving Essenceberry Bushes. Gather their seeds. Bring them home so the Grove may craft its own elemental renewal. But be cautious—the garden responds to elemental imbalance. Only those who carry harmony in their hearts may pass safely."
Lira breathed in slowly, absorbing the weight and purpose of the task.
"I understand. We’ll leave at dawn."
Serelyth stepped forward.
"You won’t go alone."
Thalanir crossed his arms, smiling.
"We’re not letting you wander into some ancient druid ruin without us."
Renkai sighed but nodded firmly.
"I’ll go too. Someone needs to keep an eye on the spirits... and on you."
Fluffy meowed once, as if declaring himself part of the mission whether they liked it or not.
A gentle rumble of amusement shook the Giant Tree.
"Go with balance, Lira. Observe the remnants of the old world. Learn from them. And bring back the heart of renewal."
Lira’s eyes lifted to the moonlit canopy above.
A new thread. A new piece of the puzzle.
And the Grove would grow stronger for it.
The dawn light filtered softly through the ancient canopy as Lira approached the Giant Spirit Tree. Its leaves glimmered in shifting hues, responding to her presence like a deep, slow breath through the Grove. Rainbow beetles rolled their colorful spheres diligently across the roots, and the early song of the Fénix drifted through branches high above.
Lira touched the moss at the base of the trunk.
I can feel you waiting, she thought.
The Great Tree stirred, faint vibrations quivering through the ground.
"Lira," the rumbling voice echoed, warm yet weighted with purpose, "the Grove grows stronger with each species you bring. The balance becomes richer... fuller. But even harmony must be sustained."
Lira exhaled slowly. "We shall soon depart."
The Tree’s branches arched, casting shifting patterns of gold and green across her face. "Your creatures use their gifts freely—fire, wind, water, earth, spirit. Even the Fénix expend immense elemental energy caring for the flame-blooming trees. But the Grove has no natural source of replenishment. No food that fuels elemental abilities. For true balance, you must restore this form of nourishment."
Tree murmured. "A species of bush—rare, elusive—bearing berries that reignite power within elemental beings. Their fruit carries the essence of condensed vitality. A single handful restores days of strength. But these bushes grow only in places where elemental ley-lines intersect. Their seeds are fragile. Their guardians... unpredictable."
Renkai, who had been listening from a lower branch walkway, blinked. "Guardians? What kind?"
Thalanir smirked. "Probably something with sharp claws or teeth."
The Tree dismissed their bickering with a soft rustle. "Not claws. Spirits. The bushes attract Elemental Wisp-Cats—small, catlike spirits of pure magic. They defend the berry bushes, for the fruit fuels their own existence."
Lira’s eyes widened softly. "Wisp-Cats... I’ve read of them. They can slip through leaves like wind, and their paws leave no tracks."
Serelyth chuckled under her breath. "Small spirits or not, if they don’t want us near those bushes, we’re in for some trouble."
The Great Tree continued, "You must find a cluster of these berry bushes, earn the trust of their Wisp-Cats, and bring at least three healthy seedlings to the Grove. Only then will elemental creatures have a natural way to restore their strength."
Lira straightened with resolve. "We’ll leave now."
Fluffy meowed loudly in agreement—perhaps far too confidently for a tiny creature—and brushed against her shin.
Serelyth laughed. "Looks like he’s volunteering again."
The Giant Tree hummed, the leaves shimmering with approval. "Go with patience. For these bushes respond only to calm hearts and steady energy."
Lira bowed her head. "We will return with what the Grove needs."
The Book glowed with pale silver marks, shifting into a map that led northeast—toward the Whispering Ley-Line Forest, a place where magic pulsed strong enough to bend the air. Trails bent slightly, like mirages, and whispers carried on the wind.
They walked for hours, crossing meadows and stone paths until the world began to change. The ground vibrated faintly, as if a heartbeat lived beneath it. Colors sharpened. Flowers glowed at their edges. Even the shadows flowed like living ink.
"This is definitely a ley-line field," Serelyth muttered, wings reacting to the raw magic with faint sparks of heat and light.
Thalanir reached toward a cluster of floating spores that pulsed like starlight. "Beautiful..."
Fluffy meowed again—this time nervously—and tucked himself behind Lira’s boot.
Renkai frowned. "Something’s watching us."
Lira sensed it too. A gentle prickle across her skin. The magic was aware of their presence.
At last, they reached a clearing where several low bushes grew in patches of glowing soil. Their leaves shimmered with blue-gold veins, and the berries were deep crimson with flecks of silver light—pulsing softly, like tiny beating hearts.
Lira stepped forward. "These must be the elemental berries."
Renkai crouched close. "They look powerful."
A sudden chirp—purr—meow! echoed from above.
Serelyth looked up. "Company."
From the branches descended several small, catlike spirits—creatures made of soft luminous mist, their fur drifting like gentle smoke, their eyes round and glowing. Their paws didn’t touch the ground; they glided, tails trailing faint sparkles.
The largest one landed before Lira and meowed—soft but commanding.
Fluffy froze.
Thalanir whispered, amused, "Fluffy... I think that’s the leader."
Fluffy meowed back—a wobbly, offended sound—and hid behind Lira again.
Lira gently extended her hand, radiating calm magic. "We mean no harm. The Grove is growing, and we want to give your berries a safe future. We only wish to take a few seedlings."
The Wisp-Cats circled her, sniffing the glow around her hand. One brushed against her palm—a drifting shimmer of warmth.
Serelyth whispered, "They’re testing your elemental balance."
Lira steadied her breathing and let the Grove’s peaceful energy flow through her, slow and warm. The Wisp-Cats relaxed, the air softening around them.
With a small chirping meow of approval, the leader hopped to a nearby bush and tapped three seedlings with its shimmering paw.
Lira bowed deeply. "Thank you."
The Wisp-Cats flicked their tails, forming gentle spirals in the air—farewell symbols.
Even Fluffy peeked out and meowed bravely at them, earning a few curious purrs in return.
The journey back seemed lighter. The seedlings glowed faintly in Lira’s arms, and the map’s silver trails pulsed with reassurance.
When they stepped through the portal, the Grove’s energy lifted warmly to welcome its new inhabitants.
Lira planted the seedlings near the Spirit Spring, using soft layers of enriched soil the rainbow beetles had prepared earlier. She whispered to the plants, feeling their heartbeat-like pulses sync with the Grove.
The Giant Tree stirred.
"Well done, Lira. These bushes will replenish the elemental strength of all creatures here. Their berries will feed fire, wind, water, and earth in equal measure. Another gap is filled."
Lira exhaled in relief. "The Grove is growing well."
Her gaze wandered across everything—
the night blooms, the Fénix embers drifting down, owl guardians perched silently, bees hovering over glowing nectar, Chiomunks planting seeds, rainbow beetles rolling their spheres like living jewels.
Everything connected.
Everything alive.
Everything purposeful.
She smiled faintly. "One mission at a time... and the Grove will become whole."
