Chapter 389: Christmas Special - Christmas Kiss
The decorating lasted longer than anyone expected.
Maelin climbed halfway up the pine to hang fruit garlands, only to get stuck and need Patricia to pull her down by the ankle. Serelyth—trying to help—froze half the decorations by accident, which made Patricia clap and declare them "perfect shimmering ornaments." Thalanir added tiny glowing runes on the tips of the branches, giving the tree a soft, enchanted radiance. Even the giant old tree spirit in the grove rumbled a deep chuckle, amused by the chaos of ribbons, dried berries, ice crystals, and bits of laughter falling everywhere like snow.
By the time evening settled in, the pine shimmered like a constellation rooted into the earth.
Candles flickered inside glass jars. Warmth wrapped the grove. The girls sat on blankets drinking spiced berry tea. Serelyth pretended she wasn’t watching but observed every step, fascinated despite herself.
And Renkai sat beside Lira, their shoulders touching just enough to make her aware of every heartbeat.
When everyone settled into quiet talk, Renkai leaned close and brushed his fingers over hers—tentative, warm, asking. Lira intertwined her hand with his, the moment soft and certain.
"Lira..." His voice lowered. "Thalanir told me something. A secret. He said I should show you. Tonight."
Lira looked up, surprised. "A secret?"
He stood, offering her his hand. Snowflakes caught in his hair, on his lashes. Whatever it was, he looked nervous... and excited.
"Come," he said gently. "Just for a moment. It’s not far."
She squeezed his hand and nodded.
They slipped out of the grove, snow crunching softly beneath their boots. The forest was calm—the fog gone, the stars drifting behind thin clouds, the moon casting a pale, silver-blue glow on every branch.
As they walked deeper, the world felt quieter. Softer. Like the forest itself waited with them.
Renkai kept her hand tight in his, guiding her through the drifts until they reached a clearing she didn’t recognize. Snow lay untouched. Trees stood like silent guardians around them.
He stopped, breath mixing with cold air.
"Thalanir said you should see this," he murmured, still holding her hand. "He said... it would matter to you."
Lira’s heart fluttered. "What is it?"
Renkai stepped aside slightly, gesturing toward the shimmering open space ahead.
"Look."
Lira stepped forward, boots sinking into the fresh snow. The clearing was quiet, wrapped in white, moonlit stillness. Renkai squeezed her hand gently and guided her beneath the low branches of a tall frost pine whose needles shimmered like silver glass.
Above them, nestled between the snow-laden boughs, grew several small bushes—round, delicate, with glossy green leaves and clusters of bright red berries.
They glowed faintly, as if they carried a warmth of their own.
Lira tilted her head. "What are those?"
Renkai inhaled softly, breath visible in the cold air. "Thalanir called them Christmas Lovers’ Holly," he murmured. "Ancient spirit plants. They only grow in places that choose them. He said... if two people in love kiss under them, their bond is blessed. And... their love is said to last long."
He hesitated, swallowing. His fox ears twitched nervously. He stood so close she could hear the shake in his breath.
Her pulse skipped. The cold air seemed to warm around her.
Renkai lifted his hand toward her. "Come."
Lira placed her hand in his, fingers trembling—not from the cold. They stepped fully beneath the boughs, snowflakes drifting slowly around them, landing on their hair like tiny crystals.
For a moment, they simply looked at each other.
Her golden eyes softened. His gaze held something deeper than the winter sky—something steady, something she had been circling around for so long. Renkai leaned in, slowly, giving her every chance to step back.
She didn’t.
The space between them thinned with each breath...
until their lips met in a warm, gentle smooch.
It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t fierce.
It was soft—quiet—like a promise whispered between falling snowflakes.
Lira’s hands slid up to his chest. Renkai wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into him carefully, as though she were something precious. Snow fell silently around them, soft sparkles melting against their skin.
When they finally parted, foreheads resting together, Renkai exhaled shakily, voice low and filled with emotion.
"I will love you," he whispered, "and protect you... for all eternity. As long as you let me stay by your side."
Lira closed her eyes, breathing in his warmth, her heart finally steady.
Surrounded by snow, under the glowing holly, she felt it—
a beginning. A memory rekindled. A bond reforged.
And love, quiet and real, blooming like winter fire.
The snow crunched softly beneath their boots as they walked back toward the grove, hands intertwined. Their fingers laced perfectly, as if they had been doing this for lifetimes... maybe they had.
Cold air brushed their cheeks, but neither of them felt the chill. Their hearts were too warm.
Renkai glanced sideways at her, fox tail swaying behind him in a lazy, content motion.
"Was it... alright?" he asked quietly, voice shy despite his strength. "The kiss. I tried not to rush you."
Lira smiled, cheeks pink. "It was perfect."
She squeezed his hand gently. "I... didn’t know love could feel this calm."
He blinked, surprised. "Calm?"
She nodded. "Yes. Not like fire that burns you. More like... warmth that waits for you."
Renkai’s steps slowed. His eyes softened, deep and tender. "I’ve waited," he said. "So many years. Even when you didn’t remember. Even when you walked the foggy forest alone... I stayed close."
Lira looked down, her breath forming soft clouds. "I’m glad you did."
He stopped walking entirely and turned to her, brushing a bit of snow from her hair. "You don’t owe me anything, Lira. Not your past life, not your choices, not even your heart." His thumb grazed her cheek with surprising gentleness. "But if you choose me again... I’ll treasure it."
Her chest tightened, warm. "I think... I’m choosing you now."
A slow, relieved smile spread across his face—almost boyish, almost vulnerable. "Good," he murmured. "Then let me walk with you. Today... and whatever comes next."
They resumed walking, closer than before. Lira leaned into him, enjoying his warmth. He shifted his tail around her like a soft fur blanket, as if shielding her from the cold.
Snowflakes drifted down like tiny stars as the grove’s familiar glow appeared through the trees.
Renkai whispered, almost to himself but loud enough for her to hear, "This winter might be my favorite."
Lira smiled. "Mine too."
Hand in hand, they stepped back into the grove—hearts quiet, warm, and newly intertwined.
As Lira and Renkai stepped into the glowing warmth of the grove, the others immediately noticed something had changed. Maelin’s eyes lit up, Patricia grinned knowingly, and even Serelyth raised an eyebrow, wings twitching in amusement.
"Well, well... what do we have here?" Maelin called out, her voice full of teasing energy. "Looks like someone’s been sneaking kisses under holly bushes!"
Patricia laughed, nudging Lira gently. "Oh come on, Lira! We could see it in your eyes the whole time!"
Lira’s cheeks flamed a deep pink. She looked down at her hands, still holding Renkai’s, and tried to hide her smile. "I... it’s not what you think!" she stammered, though her grin betrayed her embarrassment.
Renkai, however, simply pulled her into a proud, protective hug, one arm around her shoulders and the other holding her hand. "Yes," he said firmly, his voice carrying across the grove. "We’re together. And yes, I won’t hide it."
The group erupted into playful laughter and teasing. Thalanir shook his head with a half-sad, half-amused expression. "I should’ve known. You two... it was written in the way you look at each other."
Serelyth let out a soft, amused sigh. "Finally. I thought I’d have to wait until the next ice age to see this happen."
Even Fluffy chirped happily, brushing against Lira’s leg, as if approving of the union.
Lira leaned into Renkai, still blushing, but happy and warm. "I... guess everyone knew already?"
Renkai smirked, tightening his embrace slightly. "Seems like it. But now it’s official."
Maelin twirled in excitement. "I’m so happy for you two! And don’t worry, we’ll make sure the whole grove remembers this Christmas forever!"
Lira laughed softly, feeling a new lightness in her chest. Surrounded by friends, snow, and the flourishing grove, she realized that love—warm, patient, and true—was just another kind of magic, woven quietly into the life they all shared.
Maelin clapped her hands together, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Now that the Christmas tree is up and decorated, we should make gifts for everyone! But here’s the fun part—we don’t tell anyone what’s inside. Secrets make it way more exciting!"
Patricia bounced on her heels. "Yes! And we can hide them under the tree, so everyone has to discover them later. It’ll be like a little treasure hunt!"
Serelyth tilted her head, wings shifting softly. "Hmm... secret gifts? Sounds... interesting. I suppose it could be fun to see what everyone comes up with."
Lira smiled warmly at her friends, her hands still intertwined with Renkai’s. "I like that idea. And we can put our own little magical touches in the gifts too... just a hint of enchantment."
Renkai smirked slightly, a teasing glint in his eye. "And I’ll make sure no one tries to peek before the time comes."
Thalanir shook his head, though a small smile played on his lips. "I wonder if the gifts will be as clever as the pranks we usually pull."
Maelin laughed, gathering some dried fruit, branches, and colorful threads. "Come on, everyone! Let’s make these gifts special. The more care we put into them, the more fun the surprises will be when they’re opened!"
And with that, the grove buzzed with quiet energy, laughter, and the gentle rustle of hands working together, preparing thoughtful gifts to place beneath the glowing Christmas tree—each one a secret token of friendship, magic, and warmth.
