Chapter 393: Christmas Special - Snowslides and Snowplay

~8 min read 1,551 words

The next morning, the frost still clinging to every branch and leaf, Patricia bounced on her heels with excitement. "I know a place," she announced, "where we can really have fun in the snow."

Renkai raised an eyebrow. "Fun? Last time we had fun you nearly slid into a frozen lake."

Patricia just grinned. "Trust me. You’ll love this."

They packed small bottles of warm chocolate from Lira’s magical cacao batch, and together, they set out for the snow-covered hills not far from the Grove. The sunlight reflected off the snow, sparkling like crystals, while the forest stretched in quiet white beauty around them.

Once at the top of a gentle slope, Patricia pulled something from her bag. At first, Lira squinted. It looked like a miniature shovel, but with a rounded seat at the top.

"What... is that?" Lira asked.

Patricia’s grin widened. "Sit on it. Trust me. Watch."

Before anyone could protest, Patricia hopped onto the device and pushed off. Her laughter rang through the air as she zipped down the hill, snow spraying lightly behind her. She circled back up with surprising speed, her cheeks pink from excitement.

"It’s called a snow slider," Patricia explained, her eyes sparkling. "You sit, you hold on, and... you slide! Faster than walking, safer than rolling, and absolutely fun!"

One by one, the others grabbed a snow slider. Thalanir, careful as always, adjusted his stance and gracefully descended, his laughter echoing like wind through trees. Serelyth, in humanoid form, swooped lightly, using the slider to test her speed and control—it was almost too easy for her.

Renkai hesitated, tail flicking nervously, but then he glanced at Lira. Her encouraging smile and the sparkle in her eyes made his fear shrink. "Fine," he muttered, climbing on. His first push sent him wobbling wildly, but soon he found a rhythm, snow spraying around him as he let out a laugh he hadn’t realized he’d been holding in.

Lira grabbed a slider, holding Fluffy close in a small satchel so he wouldn’t roll away. As she pushed off, she felt the wind rush past her, the snow sparkling under the sunlight, and the cold tingling her cheeks. She laughed, a pure sound that made everyone else cheer.

Voices, laughter, and snow spray filled the hill as they raced and spun, trying new angles, seeing who could go the fastest, who could carve the sharpest turns, and who could make the biggest spray of snow. Even Fluffy let out small delighted squeaks as Lira carefully guided him down the slope.

"Again!" Patricia called, already running back to the top, sliding down in another graceful swoop.

"Again!" Lira echoed, taking Renkai’s hand as they both climbed back to the top together, hearts still pounding from joy.

The snow-covered hills became their playground, the winter sun casting long shadows of four friends and a fluffy white cat, all racing and sliding, laughter ringing across the quiet forest. It was pure joy—a moment of freedom and friendship, wrapped in winter magic, warmth, and the sparkling snow around them.

After several runs down the hill, everyone decided to try some tricks. Patricia demonstrated first, leaning back slightly on her slider to spin a small circle in the snow before landing smoothly. "See? You just tilt and lean!" she said, brushing off snow and laughing.

Thalanir, graceful as ever, glided down, letting his legs kick out just slightly to carve a perfect arc, making a neat semicircle in the sparkling snow. "Elegance in motion," he murmured, though his faint smirk betrayed his pride.

Renkai grumbled, "I don’t do tricks," but Lira grabbed his hand. "Come on, at least try a little spin!" She pushed him gently, and his slider wobbled dangerously—but somehow he managed a small twirl, landing in a pile of soft snow with an unintentional roll. Lira couldn’t help laughing, and Renkai groaned but couldn’t hide a smile.

Then came Fluffy’s moment. He had been peeking from Lira’s satchel, eyes wide at the sliding humans. With a determined squeak, he leapt onto a small patch of snow, trying to imitate the slides. Unfortunately, he had no slider. His tiny paws slipped, his fluffy body spun like a snowball, and he slid uncontrollably down a short slope.

"Fluffy!" Lira shouted, running after him. She caught him gently mid-slide, holding him close to her chest. Fluffy puffed up, little snowflakes stuck to his fur, and he let out a surprised but somehow proud meow, as if he had meant to do it.

The others erupted in laughter. "He’s trying to join in!" Patricia cheered. "Our little winter champion!"

Even Renkai chuckled, shaking his head. "Only you, Lira... and your cat, could turn snow chaos into adorable victory."

Encouraged by Fluffy’s attempt, everyone tried more playful spins, small jumps off tiny ridges, and snow sprays. Each run became sillier and more creative, the laughter louder, snow sparkling like diamonds around them.

At last, when their cheeks were pink from cold and happiness, they flopped down together in the snow at the bottom of the hill. Serelyth lay back, arms open, staring at the winter sky. "This... this was perfect," she sighed.

Lira nestled Fluffy close to her chest, feeling the warmth of her friends and the sparkling snow around them. Renkai leaned beside her, brushing snowflakes off her hair, and she caught his hand in hers, squeezing gently.

"Best winter day ever," Patricia declared, snow dripping from her hair like crystals.

"And Fluffy survived," Lira added with a laugh. Fluffy, ever proud, flicked his tail, puffing up as if to say, Yes. I conquered the snow.

It was a perfect balance of magic, friendship, and a tiny sprinkle of chaos—a day they would all remember long after the snow melted.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in soft pinks and oranges, the group returned to the Grove, snow crunching under their boots and paws. The scent of pine and frosted earth filled the air, mixing with the faint warmth of their laughter from earlier.

Serelyth shifted back into her humanoid form, her silver-white hair glinting in the last rays of sunlight. "I could stay outside forever," she said softly, brushing snow off her shoulders.

Lira and Renkai led Fluffy toward the fire pit they had prepared earlier. The little cat immediately curled up on Lira’s lap, still slightly damp from his snow adventure, fur puffed like a perfect white puffball.

Thalanir and Patricia carried baskets of warm bread, pastries, and mugs filled with the remaining hot chocolate Lira had brewed. The aroma mingled with the crisp winter air, making the Grove feel like a haven of warmth.

The fire crackled as they all settled down around it. Lira handed Renkai a steaming mug, and he accepted it silently, his cheeks pink from the cold—and perhaps from the memory of the snow slide earlier. He finally allowed himself a small smile as Lira sat close, her hand brushing lightly against his.

"You know," Renkai said, voice soft, "I didn’t think a day in the snow could be... this good."

Lira laughed quietly. "I knew you’d enjoy it... once you let yourself." She sipped her chocolate, feeling his warmth beside her.

Renkai’s gaze lingered on her. "Lira... today, and every day... I mean it. I love you. I want to protect you. Be here with you. Always."

Lira felt her heart swell, remembering the past lives, the moments of love she had glimpsed, and how it mirrored this present. "I know," she whispered, her hand finding his. "I’ve always known. And I... I love you too, Renkai. More than words can say."

He leaned closer, brushing a gentle kiss across her forehead before pulling her into a quiet embrace. Around them, the others chatted softly, gave playful nudges, or pretended not to notice, but the warmth of the fire and their closeness made the Grove glow brighter than the flames themselves.

Fluffy purred, pressing against Lira’s chest, as if approving the scene. Serelyth smiled faintly, watching the two in silence. Thalanir, hiding a small grin, muttered under his breath, "Lovebirds, even in the snow..."

The evening stretched on, filled with soft laughter, shared treats, and quiet moments of connection. Snow continued to fall lightly outside, but inside the Grove, hearts were warm, love and friendship intertwining as naturally as the branches above them.

It was a night of peace, of companionship, and of love—a rare pause in the rhythm of missions and the ever-growing tasks of tending the Grove. Here, they could simply be together.

The morning light filtered gently through the snow-dusted trees, sparkling across the Grove. Lira stepped outside the small shelter where she had spent the night with Renkai, stretching as Fluffy pawed playfully at her boots. The air was crisp, the snow untouched except for their footprints.

Her gaze fell on the Christmas tree in the center of the Grove, now gleaming with the handmade garlands, dried fruits, glowing sigils, and carefully tied decorations. Beneath it, the gifts they had all prepared lay in colorful bundles and wrapped parcels, each one promising surprises.

Maelin bounced forward, unable to contain her excitement. "We’ve waited long enough! Let’s open them!" Patricia nodded eagerly, her fire-element aura flickering with small bursts of warmth that made the snow shimmer slightly.
