Chapter 529: Danger from the Wuke Tribe

~6 min read 1,192 words

After Wu Yue and a few others left, the Snow Moon Tribe's people began their usual dull yet happy life.

The dull part is that Shaman Yue is gone, so no one comes to tell whether the fruits and wild vegetables they brought back to the tribe are edible; they can only be left dry in the cave awaiting the shaman's claim.

The happy part is that, with the help of wanderers, all the surrounding corn fruits were finally gathered, and they even obtained enough corn kernels to fill an entire cave.

Shaman Yue had said before that this kind of dried corn fruit, if stored well, could be kept for a very long time.

"A Da, you guy, every time you go out hunting you take this path—doesn't your foot hurt?"

The female rubbing the animal hide looked at the familiar figure and scoffed with a laugh.

The named male chuckled hehe, his already plump cheeks no longer looked frightening, instead showing a bit of simplicity: "Hehe, I just want to take a longer look at our food!"

Although he was speaking to the female, his beady little eyes kept glancing at the cave piled with corn fruits: "Hehe, with so much food, how long will it take us to eat it all?"

"Haha, look at his silly appearance!"

The females rubbing animal hide all burst out laughing.

While they were chatting and laughing, another dozen or so males came over from the other side of the tribe's camp, carrying wooden spears.

"Look, here come a few more."

"Since Shaman Yue discovered this corn fruit, these guys come every day to look; I'm worried their gazes will eat up the corn fruit!"

"Hahaha!"

"How could you possibly run out of things to look at!"

The present Snow Moon Tribe is formed by several small tribe peoples gathering together; before, they could barely get enough to eat, let alone store grain.

Although they had obtained so much food through their own efforts, that excited feeling could not be calmed for a while, thus this scene appeared: many tribespeople, before going out to work each day, would detour to the cave storing corn fruits to have a look, then give a few silly laughs before leaving.

"We must have received the Beast God's protection, which is why we became the people of Shaman Yue."

"And there are a few beastman warriors."

"I didn't know before, but you're actually quite good-looking, just a bit better than me."

"Pah! I used to look all bones because I couldn't get food; besides, I'm clearly better-looking than you now—didn't you see those females looking at me more just now?"

Two males linked shoulders and bragged, eventually even arguing about their looks, leaving the females helplessly smiling bitterly.

"An older female, displeased, picked up a clod of earth and threw it over: 'Hurry up and go hunt, what are you bragging about? With your faces, if you don't look closely, one might think you're monkeys that ran out of the forest!'"

Upon hearing that, all the females burst out laughing.

Faced with the females' mockery, a certain male didn't get angry, still laughing as he linked shoulders and walked toward the tribe's open space.

"Off to hunt!"

"You say I look like a monkey beast; I'll catch a monkey beast later and bring it back for you."

"Forget it, monkey beast meat isn't tasty; I still want to eat big-horned ox."

Teng Kun swallowed the last bite of his corn cake, stretched, stood up, and looked at Ying Fei, who was still slurping his meat soup, saying: "Let's go."

Having said that, he strode straight out of the cave.

"Be careful lately; the gathering ended, and when I went out to patrol a few days ago, I noticed many signs of tribal activity."

Teng Kun turned his head: "Have you seen any Wuke Tribe people?"

Ying Ze nodded solemnly: "I have, and I heard from a few males who went to release water that Shaman Yue seems to have seized their belongings."

Teng Kun's eyes gleamed: "Looks like this gathering will be exciting; it's really a pity I couldn't participate."

Ying Ze gave him a sideways glance: "Don't worry, if Shaman Yue doesn't return these days, what awaits us will be even more exciting."

Teng Qian's face tightened: "What do you mean?"

After gulping down the last mouthful of meat soup, Ying Ze's brows also showed a hint of worry: "The Wuke Tribe lost so many supplies at Shaman Yue's place, and that Shaman Niluo still bears a deep grudge against us; if they learn that Shaman Yue hasn't returned, they will surely come to attack our tribe—then it'll be just the two of us..."

He pointed his slender index finger at himself, then at Teng Kun: "What do you think will happen?"

"Today I brought them back with more game; the Wuke Tribe has returned, and the Yue people shouldn't be long either—hurry up and finish the last of the walls, so even if Shaman Niluo comes, we can hold out for a while."

Ying Ze heard this, his face solemn as he nodded: "Good."

The Snow Moon Tribe's people discovered that, even with so much food stored, the two beastman warriors still led them in hard hunting, and even the speed of building earthen walls around the camp increased a bit.

"Is Shaman Yue about to return? Every day they bring back this many wild beasts?"

"I don't know; the uncle next door said the speed of building earthen walls these days has increased a lot, and many earth bricks originally meant for building houses have been moved."

"The two beastman warriors surely want to finish the earthen walls before Shaman Yue returns; we also need to work hard."

"Roar!"

"Screech!"

With the roar of a tiger and the cry of an eagle, the Snow Moon Tribe's people who were still busy each had their movements pause, and suddenly they recalled what the two beastman warriors had instructed these past days.

Several gathering team captains led their members toward several gates, running while shouting: "Close the gates quickly!"

The males of the gathering team had long received their captain's orders; at the instant they heard the command, they exerted all the strength they had accumulated from abundant food during this period, closing several gates before the other tribespeople even reacted.

"Up the walls!"

Time-wise, the walls they built aren't very long, merely encircling the cleared camp of the tribe without expanding outward; but for pure-human males, such a height is already beyond their ability to climb.

Meanwhile, the faces of the Wuke Tribe members who came roaring out of the forest showed excitement, but upon seeing the earthen wall before them that was much higher than themselves, they were bewildered.

"What... what is this?"

"Is this a beast raised by the Snow Moon Tribe?"

"This is way too big!"

"Chief and shaman, let's quickly go tell them that the Snow Moon Tribe has a huge beast."

The Snow Moon Tribe's people on the wall saw that group of strangers wielding wooden spears retreat, and instantly cheered.
