Chapter 334: Wells' Astonishment
PS: Sorry.
Facing Barry's abrupt warning, Joe just sighed.
"I know you're a crime scene investigator, so you're not that familiar with the Juan Sect—but Barry, you at least still work at the precinct."
"If you had stayed at the precinct for even a single day, you wouldn't have just realized this now—Steger's Juan Sect was pulled out and reviewed yesterday. Setting aside past bad debts, there are already over twenty lawsuits with no results yet. Don't say someone wants to kill him; even if someone wanted to blow up Steger Tower, it wouldn't be strange."
"Huh? Then why don't we check their—"
"There are already over thirty known suspects, but if we dig up past cases, that number will at least double. Want to investigate? Then you have to finish going through the Juan Sect first."
"Forget it, Barry. This incident caused no casualties, no property damage, and even very few people saw it. The higher-ups' view is to just leave this case alone. Insisting on investigating would waste manpower and resources, and also waste the precinct's budget and time."
"But Steger—"
"Steger himself isn't very willing to cooperate with the investigation. He says he only trusts his security team, hired at great expense, and disregards our warnings."
"Let it go, Barry, stop dwelling on this." Joe shook his head: "If you ask me, you should visit the Starfall Laboratory less. At least then you wouldn't be thinking about getting involved in these dangerous cases all day. You're an investigator, not a police officer."
"But you know my physical condition... only the laboratory can help me control my abilities." Barry argued: "And there are who knows how many superhumans outside right now. How can the police deal with someone like Ma Dong?"
"Barry, I am a police officer myself. I know how dangerous being a police officer is. You are my son, and you and Iris—I don't want either of you to fall into danger."
Barry opened his mouth but said nothing. Actually, Joe's words made him feel very uncomfortable. As someone who enjoys helping others, he wasn't actually afraid of danger; he just wanted to use his abilities to fight criminals. And as someone who dislikes lying, he also had to hide the relationship between Iris and Eddie from Joe.
"I'm sorry, Joe." He slowly shook his head: "But this is what I want to do. I won't stop."
The atmosphere between the two immediately became somewhat gloomy.
"Joe, is Steger's Juan Sect still there?"
Eddie's voice sounded from the side. This made Barry secretly sigh with relief, while Joe turned his head with a displeased expression: "It is. What do you want that thing for?"
"Don't rush to put it back. I want to look at those Juan Sect again—a group of people plans to jointly sue Steger Industries. It's said they will submit a batch of new evidence. The prosecutor's office sent someone to understand the situation."
"Don't they have their own Juan Sect?"
"It's not them who want it; it's me." Eddie's eyes sparkled: "I've long been displeased with that Steger, whose Juan Sect piles up like a mountain. This time, I want to see closely which cases will be dug up."
"..."
That night, after Barry finished work, he didn't wait for Joe but walked straight out of the precinct.
He didn't plan to go home immediately. Actually, he spent more time in the evidence laboratory of the Central City Precinct. There were no other people there; it was his own little world.
For so many years, all the case reports and related document materials he had collected about his mother's death were kept in the laboratory. He often stayed there until late at night, staring blankly at the documents on the evidence board.
"I'm a bit wanting to talk to Dr. Wells," he muttered to himself. During this time, he had gotten used to getting along with the friends at the Starfall Laboratory. And whenever he felt lost, the reliable elder Wells could always point him in the right direction. This was really important to him.
"Interesting. This is the first time I've seen such a peculiar chocolate product..."
Barry turned his head sharply. Strange, was that a hallucination?
Why would Dr. Wells' voice be at the precinct entrance?
Ten seconds later, Barry finally confirmed he hadn't misheard. That was indeed Dr. Wells' voice—he was actually driving his wheelchair, buying things in front of Ma Ma Zhaodi's food cart.
"Dr. Wells, Old Ma, you..."
"Yo? Is this person a doctor?"
Ma Ma Zhaodi's smile on his face was quite enthusiastic: "I didn't expect it, I didn't expect it. Next time I'll deliver the goods directly to you—just two or three dollars for delivery, not expensive."
The doctor looked at him and, rarely, showed a bit of a smile on his face too: "Mr. Ma, it was pleasant talking with you. I didn't expect you to be equally enthusiastic about pastries and wheelchairs—a pastry chef with superb cooking skills who self-taught so much mechanical knowledge. Barry, are you off work?"
"Doctor, you shouldn't have come here in a wheelchair." Barry said helplessly: "This is too unsafe."
"Otherwise, how should I come? Run here on my legs?" Wells laughed instead: "The test results for the chocolate are very interesting, so I couldn't help but want to come personally to meet this interesting pastry chef. Is that strange?"
"No, how many chocolates did you buy?"
"Bought a few of each kind."
The doctor smiled and tossed a chocolate to Barry: "Haven't had dinner yet? Then eat this to tide you over first. The test results for this thing are amazing."
After Barry instinctively caught the chocolate, the doctor's peripheral vision intentionally or unintentionally glanced at Ma Ma Zhaodi. Although the test results for the previous chocolate had no problems, he always maintained sufficient vigilance toward this stranger. Up to now, he hadn't eaten any food sold by Ma Ma Zhaodi.
"This little guy actually has no flaws..." he thought to himself.
Ma Ma Zhaodi, of course, didn't care about this. He just pretended not to see it and fully played the role of an ordinary passerby.
"The old fox's intuition is so sharp; I can't inject nanobots into his stomach," he thought to himself.
The old and the young exchanged a smile, and the two parted warmly.
"Dr. Wells, Joe seems to not want me to associate with the laboratory anymore." Barry pushed Wells' wheelchair, strolling along the streets of Central City. While chewing the chocolate, he asked the doctor: "He said I'm just a CSI and shouldn't do police work."
"He is your father; naturally, he wants to keep you away from danger." Wells hit the nail on the head: "But actually, he can't stop you. Punishing evil and promoting good is your true heart. You will subconsciously rush toward people who need help."
"I will go talk to Joe about this. You don't need to worry about that. He will understand you. Why don't we talk about the Steger case first? How is it, any progress?"
"Uh, no. Actually, since there are over a hundred suspects and this matter has no serious consequences, the Central City Precinct has already decided to give up the investigation."
A look of obvious shock appeared on the doctor's face.
"Over a hundred suspects?"
