Chapter 1046 - 1054: How Long Until Home

~4 min read 605 words

Having finished her leave, Jane Sampson first went to the dressing room to change out of her costumes and then called Coco Edwards back to the hotel, and after removing her makeup and taking a bath, Jane drove Coco home before finally driving to the dessert shop that had been arranged earlier.

But it happened to be a Friday, and the traffic jam on the road had delayed her significantly. By the time Jane arrived at the DIY dessert workshop, it was already past 6 o’clock.

Entering the shop, Jane saw the time and felt a rush of anxiety.

"I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry, I didn’t expect the traffic to be so bad, so I’m this late," Jane apologized as she entered, feeling rather embarrassed since she was almost one hour later than initially planned.

The shop owner was a young girl who hadn’t expected such a big star like Jane to keep apologizing for being late. Originally without any hard feelings, the owner now found herself liking Jane even more.

"It’s okay. Traffic is unpredictable here in the Capital Province, and I know Miss Sampson is busy. Knowing it was not intentional is enough for me," the owner smiled and then said, "However, since you mentioned you wanted to start from the very first step on your own, I am a bit worried you won’t have enough time."

"It’s fine. It can be late, as long as I can bring the cake back home before midnight," Jane said with an apologetic smile, "I’m pretty good at cooking, but making desserts is not my strong suit. I’ll need you to bear with me."

For James Black’s birthday, Jane couldn’t think of what to give him. Initially, she had probed to find out what James wanted, hoping he would tell her directly, just as he did on Valentine’s Day.

Unfortunately, James didn’t say anything, leaving Jane feeling quite distressed.

Unable to figure out what birthday gift to give to James, Jane finally made an appointment with the dessert shop to make a birthday cake for him by herself.

But Jane had drastically overestimated her learning ability in the dessert-crafting department.

She had tried making some small desserts at home before. Although they weren’t very pretty and the taste was just mediocre, she always thought making a cake couldn’t be that hard.

But after one failure, she finally realized just how difficult it really was.

It was very difficult indeed.

Her talent for cooking did not extend to cake making.

It was more than nine o’clock in the evening when Jane received a call from James. While turning her head to glance at the sky outside the window, she looked down at the cake in front of her, which was cut as if gnawed by a dog, and then she swallowed her saliva before answering the call.

"It’s already past 9 p.m. now, how much longer until you get home?" James asked in a tone laced with urgency.

"Have you been home for a long time?" Jane asked tentatively.

James looked at his watch and replied thoughtfully, "I’ve been home for about two hours."

In reality, James had only gone back to the dormitory after training to grab something, then drove home. He had arrived home by 6:30.

He came back without having taken a bath or finished his meal.

On his way home, he had thought that Jane might have already arrived home but, upon entering and seeing the empty house, James decided to take a bath first. Then he went to the study, where he read a book while waiting for Jane to return.
