Otherwise, he couldn’t have gotten so mad that he went back to the guard team, right?

Jane Sampson guessed in her heart. After thinking for a moment, she decided to call Peter Gingery first.

Luckily, Peter hadn’t gone to bed at this time and answered the phone after a while.

"Peter, is your brother at the guard team now?" Jane asked as soon as Peter picked up.

"Yeah, he is. He didn’t even have time for a bath after training this afternoon before he left, and then he suddenly returned to the guard team just now. When he came back, he had a cold expression all over his face. Did you make him mad again? We’re all scared to see him; we even take detours to avoid crossing paths with him. It’s terrifying," Peter complained, "The refrigerators in the small grocery store during summer don’t even match his chill."

"He..." Jane instantly realized where James Black’s immense anger was coming from.

"Peter, I’m heading out from home to the guard team now. Later, you’ll have to help me get in. Oh, and don’t let your brother find out," Jane said hastily before hanging up.

Then, she grabbed her stuff and purse and hurriedly left the house.

After 10:30 p.m., the streets of Capital Province finally became congestion-free. Leaving the city area, the streets gradually emptied.

Jane’s heart was racing, so she sped to the guard team.

It was a mad rush and when she got to the entrance of the guard team, it was already past 11:30.

Peter met Jane at the entrance and led her inside. He saw a cake in Jane’s car, murmured a surprised "Huh," and almost touched it before Jane sharply rebuked him.

"It’s not for you, don’t touch!" Jane threatened fiercely, "Touch it, and I’ll chop off your hand."

"My goodness," Peter quickly withdrew his hand, "Who are you rushing over to give cake to so late at night? My brother, huh? But he doesn’t even like desserts."

Hearing Peter say this, Jane confirmed that he indeed had forgotten it was James’s birthday.

As she shooed Peter out of the car, she said somberly, "After midnight, it’s your brother’s birthday."

After that, she zoomed past Peter and drove straight to James Black’s dormitory building. Then carrying her stuff, she got out of the car and scurried upstairs, panting heavily.

Jane had a key to James Black’s dormitory, and on reaching the door, she used it to enter without hesitation.

Inside, it was pitch dark. Jane muttered, "Could it be he’s not in the dormitory?"

But as she moved further inside, Jane noticed red starlight in the living room.

It was the light of a burning cigarette in the night.

James Black was sitting on the living room sofa smoking alone, with no lights on.

The room was too dark for Jane to make out his expression, but she could see the loneliness revealed in the flickering starlight.

Jane’s heart stirred inexplicably, filled with annoyance and regret.

Jane stood at the doorway, snapped back to her senses quickly, and flicked on the light. Then standing at the entrance, she waved to James inside, "Hey!"

That "hey" couldn’t have been more timid.

She checked the time and patted her chest, "At least I made it before midnight!"

The person on the sofa remained seated, just lifting his head to keep watching her.

Jane, mustering courage, changed into slippers and carried her stuff toward him. When she reached James, she tentatively asked in a low voice, "Why did you suddenly leave without a word and return to the guard team?"
