Chapter 1099 - 1107: What’s the Argument About?

~4 min read 647 words

On her eighth day with the film crew, snow really started to fall in Cloud Province.

She opened the window early in the morning, only to see everything outside had been enveloped in a layer of silver overnight.

Jane Sampson was staying on the top of the small pub and heard some people quarreling downstairs. When Coco Edwards came in with breakfast, Jane couldn’t help but ask,

"Do you know what the people downstairs are arguing about?"

After hearing the question, Coco just hmm’d, nodding her head, "I know."

Coco handed the tableware to Jane before beginning, "Haven’t our crew hired some villagers nearby as temporary workers and some others as extras? Then, over these days, people have been gradually discovering their stuff missing, which led to the crew gossiping about the temporary workers being light-fingered these past two days."

"Really? That’s happening?" Jane was stunned. She had been so focused on practicing her lines and filming that these trivial matters had completely escaped her attention.

"It’s not just small stuff, there’s quite a bit," Coco continued. "The quarrel downstairs started because Ella from the supporting staff said she left an oil-paper umbrella at the hotel front desk yesterday. But when she went to retrieve it this morning, the reception refused to acknowledge that Ella had left it there."

After some thought, Coco added, "When we go out to film during the day, it’s better not to leave anything valuable here. I heard from the Assistant Director’s assistant that he left his wallet in his room the day before yesterday. When he returned, he found that 200 bucks were missing from it."

"Could it be that he misremembered?" Jane asked while sipping her porridge.

"He said that he had withdrawn 3,000 bucks in cash from the bank right next to the film and TV town before coming to Cloud Province, fearing that small places like this may not have convenient online payments and might need cash instead. After arriving here, he realized that wasn’t the case, so he just kept the cash in his wallet, figuring he only needed to carry his mobile phone and a ten or 20 bucks when stepping out. A colleague from the supporting staff borrowed 2,000 bucks from him yesterday, leaving exactly 1,000 in his wallet. But last night, when that colleague returned the cash to him, he checked the wallet and found only 800 bucks left. Even the position of the wallet had changed."

Jane’s porridge-sipping slowed to a stop as she let out an "Ah."

"So, better to be safe than sorry," Coco said. "When we go out, we’d better keep our valuables on us."

Jane nodded again and again in agreement.

However, after nodding, she burst into laughter, "I hardly have any cash on me, and since I’m out filming, I didn’t bring any valuable jewelry either."

Jane shook her head and sighed, "I’m broke these days."

After all, her wallet had puffed up a bit, but after James Black’s birthday, it quickly slimmed down again.

After breakfast, the two cleaned up their room and left. Jane remember what Coco said about the 200 bucks theft, and before leaving, she took another glance around her room, then laughed at herself for possibly having a case of paranoid delusions, and headed out. The makeup rooms here were on the second floor of the hotel, with several rooms converted specifically for this purpose.

When Jane and Coco entered, Hibiscus Wood was already there.

The makeup room was designated for Jane and Hibiscus Wood, while other actors had their makeup done in different rooms. The clothing in this room was also specifically for Jane and Hibiscus Wood’s performances.

"Good morning!" The makeup artist greeted cheerfully upon seeing Jane, and then added, "Jane Monkey King, don’t you think it’s cold here when it snows? It’s a damp cold, exactly like in our Northland."
