Chapter 597 - 605: Married
"Ah, yeah." Jane Sampson nodded. These things couldn’t be kept hidden, so she didn’t deny them.
"Did the Chief say anything to you in private?" Charlotte Miller asked, "Isn’t the Chief a very high-ranking officer?"
"Charlotte Miller, aren’t you asking a bit too much? Instead of asking questions here, go wash your face quickly and apply your skincare products. We need to rush to the dining hall for our meal," Mair Williams always spoke her mind, so she never held back.
Although Mair Williams was straightforward, she was no fool.
Ever since Jane Sampson joined the guard team, Mair Williams had felt that she was very familiar with the life at the guard team base, showing none of the curiosity typical of newcomers. The way they talked to the instructors, too, was learned from Jane.
So, Mair suspected that Jane might have been born into the second generation of the guard team, knowing members of the guard team.
Anyone who could enter this circle was no fool, and Mair didn’t believe for a second that Charlotte Miller couldn’t see that. But she just couldn’t stand the way Charlotte pretended to be naive and pestered by relentlessly asking questions until she got to the bottom of things.
"I’m just curiously asking," Charlotte said in a quiet voice, pushing back, "I don’t believe you guys aren’t curious."
"Why would I be curious about other people’s business?" Mair snorted and continued applying sunscreen in front of the mirror.
Charlotte’s face grew sour after being countered by Mair, and she huffed after a long pause, "Both of you couldn’t even catch Jane yesterday. Better think about the punishment you’re going to face today."
After saying this, Charlotte went straight into the bathroom and closed the door with a bit more force than necessary.
Jane wasn’t sure if Mair and Charlotte’s quarrel was because of her, and she looked at Mair worriedly, asking in a low voice, "Aren’t you afraid of offending people with that temper of yours not being suppressed?"
"I’ve already offended a sea of people, is there room for one more?" Mair snorted, "Last night when you weren’t here, she asked us once about the Chief’s rank. Now that you’re back, she’s asking you again. What is she implying? If she didn’t trust what Hibiscus Wood and I said, she shouldn’t have asked last night. It’s as if everyone must be secretive around her or something."
That was the real reason why Mair didn’t try to hide her dislike for Charlotte - there was no nice way to put it.
Everyone knew Charlotte was smitten by the young and handsome Chief the moment she heard about him.
Charlotte was eyeing a position within the guard team’s circle, young and having reached the rank of Chief. She probably thought with proximity comes advantage, so while she was at the guard team for the next few days, she was contemplating if there was a chance to become the chief’s wife.
Why wasn’t she inquiring about the instructor with the same diligence over the past two days?
"I heard that the Chief is married," Hibiscus Wood suddenly joined in, turning her head to confirm with Jane, "Is that right?"
Jane gave a sound and nodded, "I suppose so."
Mair glanced at Jane and knew she was quite familiar with the situation at the guard team base.
After thinking it over, Mair also spoke, "Jane, did that black-face instructor get married?"
"I think not, he’s probably single." Jane remembered Lieutenant Johnson mentioning that the black-face instructor didn’t have even one other half.
"I thought as much, with a heart so black, I doubt any woman would be blind enough to fancy him," Mair mumbled.
