Chapter 727 - 735: Are You Hungry or Not
Yesterday, before he went into surgery, Jane Sampson’s panicked and tearful appearance had already seeded a sense of unease in James Black’s heart as he entered the surgery room.
If it weren’t for the tears she couldn’t hold back, James thought, maybe, he would never know how much Jane really cared about whether he lived or died, how much she cared about his well-being.
The moments of trance seemed to pass quickly as the ward door opened and Jane Sampson walked in, the sound of her footsteps pulling James Black back to reality.
"I’m back!" Jane Sampson, who had gone out to buy breakfast, seemed in quite a good mood, her hands filled with big and small bags of food, and a smile on her face all the way through the door.
"James, let me tell you, there’s this one street in front of the hospital, an entire street of food, you have no idea, as soon as I walked in, my eyes went wide! I got some local specialty cakes! Just smelling them is heavenly! The boss said I was early, so I didn’t have to queue, but half an hour later, and there would’ve been a long line waiting."
Jane Sampson’s mood was indeed good. After all, she had thought it would be too early to buy any breakfast, but she had worried too much. It seemed people in this city had a real passion for eating, so even at 5:30, breakfast stalls and storefronts were already everywhere on the street.
"How did you know there was a street full of food in front of the hospital?" James asked, pushing himself up into a sitting position with the strength of his legs and looked at Jane, even from his spot on the bed he could sense her good spirits.
"I have an old friend in the game who knows this area really well. He sent me a travel and food guide before, and just as I was heading out, I suddenly remembered that the guide mentioned a whole street of characteristic snacks nearby, I didn’t expect it to be open so early. Still, there are quite a few shops that don’t open until noon, the guide says that by evening the street is packed full of people."
Jane Sampson set down the takeout boxes on the small table, then moved the small table next to James Black’s sickbed. She thought for a moment, giggled, looked up at James, and asked very seriously, "James, are you hungry?"
Without giving it much thought, James hummed a response to Jane Sampson.
In fact, he wasn’t really hungry since it was still early and not yet the usual time for his breakfast.
"What do you mean by ’hm’? Are you hungry, or not hungry?" Jane Sampson had already opened the packaging bag, taken out a cake, and bitten into it, "This is a radish cake! Oh my! It’s so delicious! Thin and crispy, smeared with ketchup, so good!"
As she was chewing, Jane Sampson’s speech was a bit unclear when she spoke the latter part.
After swallowing, she held the cake up to James’s face and shook it saying, "Smell it! Doesn’t it smell amazing?"
"Hm," James glanced at Jane Sampson’s earnest expression, making sure she genuinely wanted him to smell it and had no other meaning, so he didn’t say much else.
"They also have pickled vegetable cakes. Do you want the radish one, or the pickled vegetable one?" Jane asked, "Because there’s so much stuff on the street, I just bought one of each kind, so if you want the radish, it’s this one in my hand."
James noticed Jane Sampson’s eyes were fixated on the radish cake while she talked, unable to hide her reluctant little expression.
"Pickled vegetable," James said, a trace of suppressed amusement in his tone.
