Chapter 800 - 808: Taking You to the Doorway
But she didn’t lie back down; instead, she stood up.
"I’ll walk you to the doorway," Jane Sampson said as she slipped on her slippers.
James Black was quite surprised and gave Jane an extra glance or two. This woman, who had always snickered under the quilt at the mention of him returning to the guard team, was actually offering to see him off early in the morning?
It was truly, exceedingly unexpected.
Seeing that Jane wasn’t just talking, James Black curved the corners of his mouth, feeling inexplicably pleased, and then led Jane by the hand out of the bedroom.
For the first time, James Black deliberately slowed his pace. It was only a short distance from the bedroom to the gate entrance, but he indulged Jane’s just-awoken, groggy state and walked at a snail’s pace.
As James Black sized up Jane, he thought to himself.
What Alexander Forest said at the auction event that day was indeed true.
Women need direct expressions of affection.
Ever since he uttered that one sentence, even the treatment when returning to the guard team was different.
James Black held Jane’s soft and warm hand up to the main gate before letting go to bend down and change shoes. Jane didn’t immediately turn back to the bedroom; instead, she stood by and watched James Black.
"I’m leaving," said James Black as he straightened up after putting on his shoes, turning his head to speak to Jane, who had been watching him all this while.
"Mhm," Jane gently nodded in response.
Only then did James Black turn to step outside and open the door, but when he tried to step out, he realized he couldn’t move.
Jane, unbeknownst to him, had stealthily reached out and was quietly tugging at the corner of his clothes. When he turned back, her eyes, brimming with tears, blinked at him, softening his heart.
"How about one more hug?" Jane whispered to James Black, her voice soft and coaxing. After speaking, she playfully shook the arm that was tugging at the corner of James Black’s clothes, "Just for a little moment."
James Black couldn’t help but smile, uttered an "Mhm," lifted his right arm, took a couple of steps back, and embraced Jane, who was still in her pajamas.
The moment before, in Jane’s eyes, he clearly saw his own reflection.
In those clear eyes, they held only his image as well.
Jane buried her face in James Black’s arms, and because she was wary of touching his left hand, she dared not make any big movements.
So, she just stayed quietly in James Black’s arms in the entryway of their home, and after nearly one minute, she suddenly asked, "So, will you be back for Valentine’s Day?"
Before James Black could respond, Jane hastily added, "James Black, would you please come back? Although I haven’t prepared a gift for you, I can make a whole table of dishes you love."
"You don’t want me to go?" James Black asked, his voice filled with laughter.
"A little," Jane responded in a muffled voice, "Recently, you’ve been with me every day, and suddenly you’re not here; truly, it will take some getting used to."
She claimed it was just a little, yet she held him tighter and tighter.
Heh, truly saying one thing but meaning another.
"You want me to come back and keep you company?" The mirth in James Black’s tone was increasingly difficult to hide.
"I miss you a little," Jane said, then sneakily looked up at James Black, not expecting to meet his teasing gaze.
She pouted and corrected herself, "Okay, I miss you a bit."
"The epitome of saying one thing but meaning another," James Black teased, tapping Jane’s nose lightly before nodding, "That evening, have dinner ready and wait for me to come back."
Jane was stunned for a few seconds, then a smile blossomed on her face, "Roger that! Orders received, Lord Chief!"
