Chapter 989 - 997: Open the Door Ten Minutes Later

~3 min read 593 words

After getting back to the hotel, Jane Sampson had been waiting for James Black to come find her.

But as she waited, it grew later, past 11 p.m., and she’d started dozing off in the bed when her mobile phone suddenly rang. It was a call from James Black.

Jane picked up the call, and because she had just been dozing, her voice was a bit muffled and tender, making her sound inadvertently coquettish.

"Hmm~ Why haven’t you come yet~ Aren’t you coming?"

James Black rarely heard Jane Sampson’s voice so soft and tender; whenever he did, it was usually when she was half-asleep or just waking up.

He laughed, "Fell asleep waiting?"

"Hmm~" Jane Sampson neither denied nor admitted, simply humming in response.

"Open the door for me in ten minutes," James instructed.

"Okay," answered Jane cheerfully. After hanging up the phone, she sat straight up, waiting for James while lost in thought.

Ten minutes later, a new message arrived on her mobile phone. It was from James.

Just two words, "Open the door."

Then, a soft knocking sound came from outside the door.

Jane Sampson nearly sprinted from the bed to open the door. As soon as James entered and closed the door behind him, she reached out to hug him. But as she extended her hand and saw how James looked, she awkwardly pulled it back.

James couldn’t help but laugh, "What’s the matter? Disgusted?"

"Mhm, disgusted," Jane replied sincerely, taking a step back and nodding earnestly.

She had finished her bath, whereas James still appeared as he had been in the mountain village, with something that looked like yellow furry willow fluff stuck to his forehead. She could visibly see the mixture of grass and mud on his clothes.

James set down his stuff on the ground level and crouched to pick something up. Jane’s small head leaned in to peek, and he took advantage of the moment to plant a kiss on her face.

"Getting so close? Not dodging?" he asked with a laugh.

Jane’s gaze drifted, the corners of her mouth hiding a smile, her finger pointing at the small travel bag James had brought. Curiously, she asked, "What’s stuffed inside? It looks so bulky."

"Went back to the guard team to grab a change of clothes," explained James.

"Since you went all the way back there, why didn’t you clean up before coming here?" Jane asked in surprise, "You went back like this and then came back again?"

"If I had made you wait any longer, you would have fallen asleep." James was actually worried that Jane might get scared, so he’d hurried back to her.

In the travel bag James said contained his change of clothes, he reached inside and pulled out a bunch of wild fruits wrapped in a bag.

Jane’s eyes swept over them, and instantly lit up.

"For me?" Jane asked, smiling at James. Without waiting for him to speak, she took the red wild fruits from James Black’s palm.

"Thought you’d cry, so these are to cheer you up," James teased Jane for once, "Didn’t expect that you didn’t cry."

"Who cries?" While Jane was holding the wild fruits from James’s hand, her fingertips unintentionally touched his palm—broad and rough with thick calluses.

"Is your left hand better now?" Jane set the wild fruits aside and reached to touch James’s left hand, "Let me see."

Not being a doctor, Jane’s examination involved pinching here and poking there, and seeing that James didn’t even wince, she believed his left hand was healed.
