Chapter 92: Slaying Demons – 34K Delayed Compensation Added, Please Subscribe
In the banquet hall, watching Wang Wu disappear, the scene fell into a brief silence.
The group exchanged glances, each wearing a puzzled expression.
"Eh, Wang Lan, what is this…"
After a moment of silence, Wang Yin looked at his daughter and asked tentatively.
Wang Lan also shook her head, then added, "Young Hero, you have some connection with the Demon-Subduing Army; perhaps something's happening over there…"
At that point, Wang Lan's words faltered, and worry appeared on her face.
"Damn it, why did it go wrong so quickly??"
Under the night's shroud, Wang Wu leapt swiftly across the rooftops of successive houses, racing toward the He Dong Xian county office.
When the Vajra Demon-Subduing Array was triggered, Wang Wu was immediately notified.
Fortunately, Wang Wu had set up a Vajra Demon-Subduing Array, so even though the enemy demonic transformation occurred early, it didn't affect the surroundings.
But Wang Wu was also puzzled; his inference that "within three days" didn't mean any time within three days, but at least seventy hours later.
But how long is that? Less than ten hours, and this woman demonicized outright?
That was clearly wrong, very wrong, yet Wang Wu didn't know which link had failed.
It couldn't be his fault, nor could the Vajra Demon-Subduing Array have accelerated Zhuang Lan Xue's demonic transformation; although the Extreme Heaven Vajra Sect's techniques are unorthodox, they don't turn a normal person into a demon…
Alright, there is such a thing. But Wang Wu certainly couldn't use it, since the textbooks never taught it, only mentioned it in passing.
Even though it wasn't taught, he does know the divine skill, because that ability used to be a function of the Heavenly Demon Body technique, now simply refined away.
Bang—!
Wang Wu landed with a howl, creating a huge crash that instantly drew the attention of some soldiers in the nearby camp.
He rushed straight toward the He Dong Xian dungeon, but at its entrance, Wang Wu saw no officials guarding it.
That made his heart sink; just as he was about to enter the dungeon, a voice came from behind Wang Wu:
"Young Hero Wang, why are you still here so late?"
"Something happened below," Wang Wu said without turning his head, then continued downward.
The person who called him from behind was Colonel Zhao, who seemed to have set his sights on him; he followed almost as soon as Wang Wu arrived.
But that was just in time.
Wang Wu dropped straight into the dungeon, and instantly a strange howl echoed inside.
"Now you believe my words?"
Wang Wu looked at the humanoid monster in the cage, driven mad by the humans' appearance, its roar growing louder, and said.
Behind him, Colonel Zhao stood frozen, staring at the unbelievably bizarre "thing" before him that could mentally assault anyone just by being seen.
After more than a dozen seconds, he finally stammered, "Th-this, th-this, th-this…"
"Why so fast?" Wang Wu turned to Colonel Zhao, "What's the problem here?"
"W-what do you mean?"
"I mean, it shouldn't be this quick," Wang Wu said. "She was still in a very early demonic stage; even your Demon-Manifesting Stone couldn't detect…"
"Young Hero's meaning is…" At this moment, Colonel Zhao returned to normal, looking at Wang Wu with shocked expression.
"You mean someone in the city is causing trouble?"
Another voice spoke the words Colonel Zhao was about to say, and it was clear who it was without even looking.
"No, why does this woman always manage to find me shortly after I arrive somewhere? Damn, is she a stalker?"
But now isn't the time to dwell on it; Wang Wu looked at Si Tu Jin, nodded, and said:
"Yes."
"Who do you think it might be?"
Si Tu Jin stepped beside Colonel Zhao and looked at him.
"I…" Colonel Zhao opened his mouth, but was stuck for a long while, saying nothing.
"Forget it, let's deal with this thing first," Si Tu Jin, not expecting Colonel Zhao to provide useful info, walked to the Demon-Subduing Array where Zhuang Lan Xue was howling madly, a flash of white light in her hand, and a long spear appeared.
The spear's shaft material was unknown, its tip seemed jade, and the whole weapon was silvery‑white.
She thrust the spear casually, followed by a flash of white light. When the glow faded, only a lump of black‑smoking liquid remained in the Demon-Subduing Array before her.
The liquid spread outward in all directions, but any contact with the array's edge caused it to blaze violently and then evaporate quickly.
A foul stench filled the air, yet none of the three showed any change in expression. Si Tu Jin retracted her spear, and in her gaze toward him was a hint of admiration:
"You actually saved the lives of the people nearby,"
she said.
"If it weren't for your Vajra Demon-Subduing Array, the people and soldiers still unable to evacuate here would probably have been eliminated."
"Thank you," Colonel Zhao said solemnly, clasping both hands in a salute to Wang Wu.
"No problem."
Wang Wu shook his hand, glanced again at the black liquid on the ground, then headed toward the stairs.
"Better be careful; someone in the city is probably causing trouble," Wang Wu said before leaving.
"Brother Wang as well," Si Tu Jin said, watching Wang Wu's back from behind.
After returning to the Wang residence and greeting its occupants, Wang Wu went back to his own room.
He stripped off his clothes, took a shower, and had to admit that a rich family's bathroom is indeed nice.
Even with the spherical fortress of Assassin Brother now owned, the experience here is still excellent.
Steam swirled in the bathroom as Wang Wu leaned back in the tub with a relaxed smile.
At that moment, the bathroom door was pushed open; Wang Wu looked over, but it wasn't Xiao Yun.
"Wang Lan?" Wang Wu looked at Wang Lan, "Aren't you resting this late? You just…"
"Wu Lang..."
Wang Lan felt her face about to melt from the heat; she lowered her head and whispered, "I..."
In the winter night sky there was no moon, nor any stars. Everything had merged into boundless darkness.
The night had deepened.
Wang Lan felt her soul and body trembling violently.
Her body was nearly falling apart, and her soul seemed about to break free of its bodily shackles, drifting toward the lofty night sky.
Amid wave after wave of massive surges, she was on the brink of losing consciousness.
But each time, the call that sounded deep within her soul pulled her back from the edge of unconsciousness.
That did not signify an end, for immediately after came an even more ferocious wave.
In the deep night, some were joyful, some sorrowful, and others were plotting something.
"Why did it fail?"
In a guesthouse room, a cultivator sipped tea and asked the companion beside him.
"The Si Tu family has noticed, and now the space vessel has its sights fixed on the county town, making any further action impossible," her companion said.
"Moreover, it's not just the Demon-Subduing Army; cultivators from the Xuan Sect and Qingping Sect have gathered in the city, and seven or eight cultivators of the Break Delusion realm have arrived, leaving us with no chance at all."
The female cultivator dressed in a black robe placed her teacup back on the table, hummed softly for a moment, then looked at her companion:
"Can we get in touch with Wu Ding and the others?"
The companion shook his head and added:
"Even if we could, the space vessel hovers overhead; any message sent out could be intercepted."
"These Zhou dogs..." the female cultivator snarled, gritting her teeth.
Her face twisted with anger, looking extremely grotesque.
Not all Yin people are willing to obediently become subjects of Great Zhou.
Moreover, as an immensely powerful unified regime, the Shang Dynasty's splendor at its peak far surpasses what Great Zhou can achieve today.
After all, the Zhou never unified the world; although many regions are somewhat stronger than the former Shang, to some people they are certainly far inferior to Great Shang.
In the former Yin-Shang lands, a considerable number still reminisce about Great Shang, including some sects and nobles with substantial influence.
Take, for example, the Luo family.
The Luo family is also one of the six nobles of South Continent, descendants of the Yin people.
When Great Zhou was first founded, to win over the Yin, the Zhou granted many Yin nobles in these lands noble titles and privileges in the new dynasty.
Although over eight hundred years various means have eliminated and weakened many, even today South Continent still has three top-tier Yin-Shang noble families.
The Si Tu family, the Luo family, and the Yu family.
Among these three, the Luo family is naturally the most unscrupulous.
The Si Tu family, having gained great benefits and status in the new dynasty, is naturally loyal to the Zhou dynasty.
Consequently, the Si Tu family's power is the strongest among the six nobles of South Continent.
The next day, at dawn.
Wang Lan curled up in Wang Wu's arms; although she had awakened, she had no desire to get up.
A massive sweetness filled her chest, nearly drowning her.
"Young Hero Wang."
But at that moment, Xiao Yun's voice came from outside the door.
"Is there something?" Wang Wu sat up from the bed, gently pulling Wang Lan into his embrace, and asked.
"Colonel Si Tu of the Demon-Subduing Army is looking for you; he says there is a matter and would like you to go to the army for a discussion."
"Damn, it's early and I haven't even eaten," Wang Wu rolled his eyes but still got out of bed.
He gave Wang Lan a gentle kiss, then began dressing; Wang Lan tried to help him dress, but as soon as she shifted her leg she felt a sharp pain.
"Take a rest today," Wang Wu said with a smile, looking at Wang Lan. "Things like this need to be moderated, Lan-er."
Wang Lan's face flushed as she buried her head into the quilt.
Yesterday truly couldn't be blamed on Wang Wu; one can only say that dealing with monsters too often made him forget that humans have limits to what they can endure.
As a practitioner at the first stage of Gang Qi, Wang Lan's strength is not weak.
If she were to fight the initial Shu Niang now, winning would be no problem.
However, while Gang Qi practitioners have offensive power, their bodily resilience and recovery are insufficient.
They can unleash extremely powerful attacks, but these damage the body.
Thus, Gang Qi practitioners' fist-and-foot techniques are mainly for emergencies; ordinarily they rely on weapons.
True Realm practitioners are different; there are many who use fists and palms as primary weapons, and virtually every family and sect has some fist-and-palm skills.
Wang Lan may be like Shu Niang; after the first experience she savors the marrow and then loses all sense of restraint.
But Shu Niang is a monster, so she can go on nonstop all day, whereas Wang Lan certainly cannot.
Nevertheless, that's only a minor issue; Gang Qi practitioners' recovery is slower than True Dao practitioners, but still fairly quick.
It should be fine in a few hours; if not, just wait a bit and come back to help handle it.
After dressing, washing his face and brushing his teeth, Wang Wu stepped out.
He hadn't even left the Wang Clan mansion when, shortly after stepping out, Wang Wu ran into Si Tu Jin.
"General Si Tu," Wang Wu saluted Si Tu Jin. A middle-aged man stood beside her; Wang Wu had not seen him before, but his strength was clearly extraordinary.
"Brother Wang, good morning," Si Tu Jin returned the salute, then introduced:
"This is Yu Xin, the court's Demon-Subduing cultivator."
"Young Hero," the middle-aged man nodded at Wang Wu.
"Brother Wang probably hasn't had breakfast yet?" Si Tu Jin asked with a smile.
"No."
"Then how about we go to Fangyi Hall again?"
"Then I shall humbly obey." Wang Wu nodded.
