Chapter 75
How could a person’s legs match the speed of a car’s four wheels!
In the blink of an eye, the SUV had surged to within ten meters of Lin Yun!
As he realized he was about to die, Lin Yun felt his legs go weak, utterly devoid of strength, and helplessly shut his eyes…
At that moment, a loud “bang!” echoed beside his ear—like a firecracker on New Year’s Day—followed by the screech of tires slamming on brakes!
He opened his eyes and saw the SUV, which had been moments from crushing him, now overturned right before his eyes—barely missing his body!
Still dazed, two large men leapt out from behind him, sprinted to the overturned SUV, and then a massive hand seized his arm as a deep, stern voice said: “Lin Yun! We’re police!”
Lin Yun’s tension eased, his legs buckled, and he was about to collapse—when the hand gripping him pulled him upright with force!

In the Jiangdong Branch interrogation room, a brutal-looking man with a bandaged head sat slumped in the interrogation chair, while Gu Changzheng and another detective sat across from him, questioning the suspect who had tried to run over Lin Yun.
The suspect claimed he had stayed up all night gambling, and when driving past that spot in the morning, he’d been dazed and didn’t even know what he’d done!
When asked where he’d been gambling and with whom, he stammered and evaded.
Gu Changzheng knew he was pretending ignorance, so he didn’t rush him—he left the suspect alone in the interrogation room and went to the room where Lin Yun was being accommodated.
On their way back to the bureau, Master Lu Haoxuan and Hu Jinquan received a call from Director Zhou Kai: an astonishing piece of news—Chang Huaqiang’s cousin, Chang Huafei, had been shot dead on the street!
Openly carrying a gun and committing murder in broad daylight—this was a grave case with extremely serious implications! Lu Haoxuan left Gu Changzheng behind to wait for the team’s support vehicle to handle Lin Yun’s case, while he and Hu Jinquan rushed directly to the scene!
Zizhen City was about to become turbulent again!
The murder of Chang Huafei on the street had caused massive repercussions; the municipal party committee and government immediately formed a special task force, headed by Public Security Bureau Director Guo Shuqing, with a strict deadline to solve the case!
Director Guo, who was due to step down to a secondary role next spring, had risen to head the city bureau after successfully leading the investigation into the 1995 serial dismemberment case.
Just as he was about to retire with honor, a gun-related homicide had occurred!
The task force’s mobilization meeting was brief: Director Guo, as overall commander, coordinated everything; since the Criminal Investigation Brigade’s captain, Wang Feihong, was attending training at the Provincial Party School, Lu Haoxuan was appointed team leader—the city demanded the case be solved within thirty days, or every member of the task force, starting with Director Guo, would face disciplinary action!
After the meeting, everyone looked grim; though the case seemed simple—with eyewitnesses—it was impossible to even confirm the shooter’s gender, and Chang Huafei was just a minor figure, so insignificant that no one would ever think of killing him, let alone shooting him!
But every murder must be solved! This was a mission—and a responsibility!
Back at the branch, Lu Haoxuan immediately convened a case analysis meeting, swiftly gathering witness statements, reviewing surveillance footage from the scene, and investigating Chang Huafei’s social connections…
Still shaken, Lin Yun hadn’t recovered from the heart-stopping ordeal—he had come so close to death!
As his heart still pounded, he saw Gu Changzheng and another officer enter.
Gu Changzheng sat across from him and casually pulled out a cigarette: “Smoke?”
Lin Yun shook his head: “No, I don’t know how.”
Gu Changzheng smiled: “Don’t be nervous. Can you tell us the truth now?”
“What… what do you mean? I don’t understand what you’re saying,” Lin Yun said, his eyes darting away.
“Heh!” Gu Changzheng exhaled a plume of smoke and smiled. “Kid, you’re still young, and you didn’t personally poison the victim. If you confess now, the worst you’ll face is failure to report. We already know the full truth—once we lay it out, you’ll be on the defensive. Then you’ll be an accomplice!”
Gu Changzheng mixed persuasion with deception, watching Lin Yun’s reactions closely as he spoke.
Lin Yun glanced at Gu Changzheng skeptically, saw the man staring at him with solemn, unwavering intensity, and felt a surge of guilt—he knew who had sent the car to kill him, and realized he had no choice left.
He sniffled, voice trembling with tears: “Officer, if I tell you, will you let me go? They want to kill me—you police have to protect me!”
Gu Changzheng nodded: “If you cooperate and contribute to the case, the law will give you a fair outcome. Speak—from the night Long Guangsheng died in the nightclub, tell us everything.”
Lin Yun nodded frantically: “Yes, yes, I’ll tell you… that night…”
Back to December 10th, 10 p.m.: Lin Yun, working at the nightclub, felt his phone vibrate violently on his waist. He pulled it out—familiar number.
He glanced around, saw no one was watching, and slipped quietly into the restroom to answer.
Five minutes later, he emerged looking uneasy. Soon after, Li Jun arrived with a young man with yellow hair, gestured for him to bring a bottle of distilled water, then entered an empty VIP room.
After Lin Yun delivered the water, Li Jun told him to stand guard outside and not let anyone in.
Lin Yun already knew what was happening—he obediently stood at the door. About an hour passed, then Li Jun emerged from the room with a pleased expression, told Lin Yun not to disturb the guests, made a sniffing gesture, and patted his shoulder—meaning, you understand.
Lin Yun smiled and said: “Don’t worry, Brother Jun!”
Li Jun left the nightclub at 11 p.m.
Over half an hour later, the yellow-haired youth emerged from the room. He stared at Lin Yun for a moment, and Lin Yun whispered: “Brother Zhong gave me the order—I know what to do!”
The yellow-haired youth smiled in satisfaction, feigned staggering toward the restroom. Lin Yun hurried over to support him, and they entered together.
Seeing no one else in the restroom, the yellow-haired youth coughed three times. A stall door opened, and a man poked his head out. Seeing the yellow-haired youth, he pulled out another man with yellow hair—this one unconscious, limp, barely able to stand.
The man shoved the unconscious yellow-haired youth into Lin Yun’s arms. The other yellow-haired youth told him to carry the body into the room he’d just left, then inform the security guard that Li Jun had ordered no one to disturb the guest—he was to rest inside.
Lin Yun looked cautiously at Gu Changzheng: “Officer, after my shift ended, I went straight home—it was already past two a.m. Then someone from Brother Zhong called me again and told me to report tomorrow morning that someone had died in Xuelang Valley!”
