Chapter 20: Give You a Little Taste of Cross-World Shock!

~6 min read 1,154 words

There’s a common superstition—“If you make a wish to the mountain god, any wish will be granted.”

A man clad entirely in black—black clothes, black hair, black hat, black eyes—raised one finger and sneered dismissively.

“Could something like that possibly be true?”

“In return… if you offer something in return…”

“Then what will you offer to satisfy their appetite? Your family’s lives? Your friends’ lives? Or… your own?”

These are all costs that Ken Shi Lang cannot bear.

“So far, several spiritualists have gone missing… You still have time to turn back now.”

Shimachi Shinbo Tachibana Saede sighed, as if aware of some hidden truth, and urged: “If you go further, there will be no turning back.”

“I haven’t ignored this… but… but…”

Before Ken Shi Lang could finish, the black-clad man laughed coldly at Saede: “You’re not seriously suggesting we let Ken Shi Lang go back, and leave the rest to you alone? How admirable!”

“Without Ken Shi Lang, how can we fight the mountain god!”

“Taking her along is just sending her to die!”

“You’re talking like a spoiled child!”

“The spoiled one is you, old woman!”

Before the two could finish arguing, dozens of spirits merged with the forest—startled by the commotion—fixed their pale, chilling gazes squarely on the trio.

In an instant… an unnatural sensation clung to their bodies; the air seemed steeped in coldness, and the arguing faded into silence.

An unprecedentedly chilling, eerie aura made Ken Shi Lang involuntarily shiver.

“When I give the signal, follow me immediately,” said Shimachi Shinbo, pulling up her spiritual robe’s hood, her face grave.

Every land has seen death—this land just has more than most… but they didn’t want to become one of them.

In this world, no spiritualist, no matter how powerful, could possibly defeat so many demons at once.

If so, they had no choice but to flee.

Swish!

Four doll-like decoys, resembling charm figures, were thrown out, drawing the demons’ overwhelming attention.

“Now! Run!”

“What a retro method.”

Luo Wang muttered as they ran.

“Can’t we fight them head-on?”

Ken Shi Lang followed closely, curious.

“Ken Shi Lang, what do you think spiritualists are? Superheroes who shoot energy beams? We’re spiritualists, but we don’t have any ‘spiritual power 100%’ beam-type techniques—we rely mostly on tools to deal with spirits.”

【I can see it!】

【You can see it too!!】

Shimachi Shinbo’s actions made it undeniable: all three of them could see!

And it seemed the dolls Saede had thrown weren’t enough to escape danger—the number of demons was far greater than they’d thought!

Some had broken free from the decoys, roaring as they charged straight at them.

【Yin-Yang Eye Ken Shi Lang: We’re done! I’m surrounded by demons!】

【Great Goddess: OK, prep work complete】

【Great Goddess: Ken Shi Lang, agree to this @Yin-Yang Eye Ken Shi Lang】

Agree to what? The girl had no mental bandwidth left to ponder—she was facing an unprecedented crisis.

Just inches ahead, the two fastest demons glared with murderous intent, howling as they leapt—left and right—unleashing seventeen or eighteen limbs beyond human form, tearing through space toward the fragile girl. Deformed claws and massive hands were about to grasp her abdomen, thighs, arms, and head.

Now! This is the moment of life and death!

Agree agree agree agree agree aaaaaah!!!

Thud!

In an instant, a glowing figure—appearing from nowhere, at no time—descended from the sky with a howling rush, moving faster than a meteorite, slamming down directly before Ken Shi Lang.

The demons’ shrieks ceased abruptly.

What followed was chaos: countless demon hands and claws, like severed octopus tentacles, flew and rolled across the ground like living things, black mist gushing from their severed ends.

Ken Shi Lang, in her school uniform, stood on the small clearing amid the trees. The two spiritualists beside her froze mid-motion, staring dumbfounded at the towering young man who had suddenly appeared—and now slowly straightened.

He must be a young man… right?

Only after he turned around did they see his full appearance.

He wore a tight-fitting short-sleeve shirt and shorts, bare arms and calves exposed. A metallic demon mask covered his face. A massive string of prayer beads, long enough to dangle to his navel, hung around his neck. His hair stood on end like a hedgehog. Beneath his unnervingly pale skin, blue veins bulged like earthworms, writhing with his violent movements, radiating a wild yet solemn power.

In his clenched hands, he gripped the necks of two demons tightly—like dragging ropes—stretching their already monstrous necks to thrice their original length.

“Perfect timing, yeah~”

As he spoke, the two demons, crushed by his brute strength and unable to even scream, were forced—TOGETHER!—into one!

“Boom!”

The two demons exploded on impact, their black mist rising before Ken Shi Lang’s face, obscuring her expression of confusion and bewilderment.

This way of speaking… this annoying tone… it reminded her of someone she knew.

“You’re… the group admin?!” the black-haired girl asked cautiously, her golden eyes fixed intently on him, as if trying to pierce through the mask and see his true face.

“Correct!”

Hearing this, the girl immediately checked what she’d agreed to in her panic—【System Prompt: Do you agree to Great Goddess’s cross-world travel?】

When did the group chat gain this feature?!

She skimmed rapidly—everyone in the group was buzzing, all as surprised as she was.

【Forever Seventeen: The group admin’s hiding so well~】

【Angel After Death: Shocked (°ο°)】

【Xia Na: How come I can’t find the cross-world button (ì_í)】

Swift, decisive, hurried.

Perhaps this is what “suddenness” truly means.

The man who had suddenly appeared before them was clearly here to help her… but no matter how Ken Shi Lang looked, even with his face hidden by the mask, she couldn’t shake the feeling he wasn’t a good person.

No, no, the girl shook her head.

From her experience these past days of “seeing ghosts,” she’d reached a conclusion: judging by appearance or aura alone was the stupidest thing possible.

Some demons looked more human than humans—and were far more dangerous. Some men with terrifying faces might have unexpectedly kind hearts.

“I told her to pray to other gods for risk diversification, yet here she is, unknowingly walking straight into this?” Jia Ji muttered to himself. Ken Shi Lang’s ability to attract trouble was truly top-tier, and her mental strength was extraordinary. “Could this be the will of the cosmos?”

Can’t figure it out? Don’t care!

“What were you just saying?”

“Nothing. Just said you’re cute… Let’s deal with these things first.”

Jia Ji waved his hand calmly, turning with composure toward the dozens of fierce, circling demons who dared not advance. Blue flames surged violently around his arms, and behind his mask, a cruel smile curled on his face.

Then he stomped forward—charging straight at them!

Spirits lingering in the mortal world!

Watch me give you a little taste of cross-world spiritual energy manliness!
