Chapter 423: Not Afraid
Li An clenched his fists, his knuckles turning slightly white, his eyes revealing determination and a hint of barely perceptible worry. Guo Yao gently tugged at the corner of his clothes, her palms full of sweat; her lips trembled slightly, as if she wanted to say something, yet she swallowed it back.
"Are you ready?" Li An turned his head, looking at Guo Yao gently, forcing a faint smile onto his lips. Guo Yao took a deep breath and nodded firmly: "Mm, as long as I'm with you, I'm not afraid."
Holding hands, the two slowly stepped into the Chuansong Sect. After a moment of dizzying disorientation, they arrived in an unfamiliar place shrouded in clouds and mist. Strange fog permeated the surroundings, and faint whispers could be heard drifting from the distance.
"This must be the Soul Society..." Li An murmured softly, observing the surroundings warily. His hand remained tightly clasped around Guo Yao's, as if that alone could give her strength.
While exploring the Soul Society, Li An accidentally discovered some strange clues at a hidden outpost. These clues seemed unrelated at first glance, yet they appeared to be connected by an invisible thread. Returning to their temporary lodging, Li An sat before a dilapidated wooden table, laying out the yellowed papers and strange symbols one by one, his brows furrowed as he fell into deep thought.
Guo Yao sat quietly nearby, watching Li An's focused expression, her heart filled with worry. She tried to speak several times, but seeing Li An's serious face, she held her words back. The atmosphere in the room was so oppressive it made one feel unable to breathe; only the candle on the table occasionally made a "plop" sound, breaking the dead silence.
"Something is wrong; there must be a larger conspiracy hidden behind these clues." Li An suddenly spoke, his voice low and hoarse. His fingers tapped lightly on the table, his eyes fixed tightly on the clues, as if trying to see through everything.
"Li An, could it be very dangerous?" Guo Yao finally couldn't help but ask, her voice carrying a slight tremor, her eyes full of worry.
Li An raised his head, looking at Guo Yao, a hint of tenderness flashing in his eyes: "Don't worry, I'm here. I will definitely figure all this out."
Following the clues' hints, Li An decided to investigate deeply. They advanced along a narrow and dim alleyway; the surrounding buildings were in ruins, and strange eerie lights flickered on the walls. Suddenly, a cold wind blew; Li An stopped abruptly, looking warily around: "Be careful, something is wrong."
No sooner had the words left his lips than a group of black shadows surged out from all directions. These shadows had indistinct forms, their faces unreadable; one could only see the weapons in their hands flashing with cold light.
"Who are you? Why are you blocking us?" Li An shouted loudly, his hands quickly gathering energy.
The leader of the black shadows let out a chilling cold laugh: "Kid, if it's something you shouldn't know, don't pry blindly. Leave obediently, or don't blame us for being unkind."
"Hmph, you think making me leave is that easy?" Li An snorted coldly and charged forward first. His body darted between the shadows like a phantom; every strike carried immense power. The shadows defended themselves one after another, but Li An's attacks were so sharp and fierce that they found it hard to hold their ground.
Guo Yao hid nearby, watching the battle tensely. Her hands tightly covered her mouth, fearing her cry might affect Li An. Suddenly, a black shadow, taking advantage of Li An's inattention, launched a sneak attack from behind.
