Chapter 194: Let Them Look All They Want
Li Yunlong revealed a cunning smile: "What are you afraid of? We have that kid Li Mingyuan's treasure! Remember, everything proceeds according to plan. Everyone to your stations, strictly observe radio discipline, and wait for my order before opening fire. Let those dog-day pilots be smug for a while; once they let their guard down, we'll show them what we're made of!"
Just then, the radar squad reported urgently: "Chief! The radar has detected unidentified flying objects, 80 kilometers away from us, speed 800 kilometers per hour, altitude 4000 meters, quantity... twenty-four! Based on flight characteristics, confirmed as F-86 Fighter!"
The command post fell silent instantly, and everyone's gaze focused on Li Yunlong.
Li Yunlong took a deep breath, the expression on his face becoming incomparably serious: "Pass on my order, the whole army is to remain hidden, anti-aircraft weapons are to be prepared, and wait for my command before opening fire!"
He strode out of the command post, stood on the mountain ridge, and looked toward the clear blue sky in the distance.
Under that seemingly calm sky, the Grim Reaper was rapidly approaching, piloting steel war eagles.
A faint, elusive smile hung on the corner of Li Yunlong's mouth: Come on, let me show you what a real surprise is.
……
Lieutenant Wilson was leisurely maneuvering his F-86 Fighter, looking down at the rolling mountains below through the cockpit glass.
The Taiyang shone on the wings, reflecting a dazzling silver light. This was his eighth bombing mission, and he was already well-versed in the routine.
"Blue Eagle No. 2, do you see anything?" he asked Morrison over the radio.
"Only a bunch of hillbillies scurrying around in the mountains," Morrison chuckled, "Oh, wait, they seem to be setting something up on the mountaintop."
Wilson adjusted his heading and flew to Morrison's flank: "Looks like anti-aircraft equipment? Good God, are they serious? They want to use those pieces of junk to hit our planes?"
"Haha, maybe they haven't seen real modern warplanes yet. Hey, Bill," Morrison called another pilot over the radio, "I bet they can't even hit our shadows."
Bill's laughter echoed in the channel: "Bet their shells can't even scratch the paint off our planes. Wilson, why don't we fly a bit lower and show these Long Country bumpkins what a real plane looks like?"
"Probably scare them into wetting their pants," Wilson laughed, "But let's finish the mission first. Scout around and see if there are any targets worth bombing."
As they spoke, Morrison had already lowered his fighter to an altitude of 3000 feet, just enough to see the situation in the valley clearly.
"This is interesting," Morrison reported over the radio, "These Long Country people have some strange vehicles, they look like small tracked vehicles, and some tube-shaped things... maybe their native cannons?"
Wilson flipped his wing easily and flew below Morrison to observe: "Take a few photos to bring back for Hanmidun Colonel to see; he'll laugh his head off."
Bill chimed in: "Hey, there's a machine gun position over there, do you want me to go say hello?"
"Suit yourself, but don't overdo it," Wilson laughed, "Leave some Long Country people for us to bomb."
Bill cheered and maneuvered his fighter to dive toward a hidden spot on the hillside.
In the valley, Li Yunlong observed every move of the enemy planes through binoculars, the expression on his face growing colder.
"Arrogant bastards," he gritted his teeth, "Showing off right above our heads."
Zhao Gang looked worriedly at the enemy planes flying lower and lower in the sky: "Lao Li, they seem to be scouting our anti-aircraft equipment..."
Li Yunlong sneered: "Perfect, let them look all they want. How is the radar?"
"Radar is working normally and has locked onto all enemy planes," the technical squad leader reported, "Attack targets have been assigned to each squad."
Li Yunlong took the communicator and took a deep breath: "Attention everyone, stay hidden, don't startle the snake. Let these dog-days get closer, even closer..."
At this moment, Bill had already lowered his fighter to a shockingly low altitude, almost grazing the mountaintop as he flew past.
He could clearly see the terrified expressions of the Long Country soldiers below, which made him exceptionally smug.
"Hey, guys," he laughed into the radio, "These Long Country people look like they're about to wet themselves! I see they have some strange gun barrels, ha, probably second-hand goods they scavenged from the Arctic!"
Wilson also lowered his fighter's altitude and joined in this "show-off."
The roar of the F-86 engines echoed in the valley, deafening.
"See that over there?" Wilson pointed to a position on the ridge, "That looks like their command post. I'm going to personally deliver a bomb to it in a moment."
Inside the temporary command post in the valley, Li Yunlong's face grew increasingly gloomy. The arrogance of the enemy planes had exceeded his imagination; they were even intentionally lowering their altitude to show off their technical superiority.
Zhao Gang asked urgently: "Should we open fire? They have already entered our range."
Li Yunlong took a deep breath, a cold light flickering in his eyes: "Wait a little longer... let them drill a bit further into the trap..."
The Radar Operator suddenly reported: "Chief, according to the enemy planes' flight trajectory, they seem to be preparing to attack our command post!"
A cold glint flashed in Li Yunlong's eyes: "Good, now is the time! Pass on my order—Tianluo System, open fire with everything!"
The Communication Soldier immediately relayed the order to every fire point.
Zhao Gang quickly picked up a special portable radio, a portable communication device designed specifically for frontline command.
"Tianluo System, full firepower!" Zhao Gang issued the final attack command.
On the command post's fire control screen, over a dozen red dots represented the enemy planes, while blue lines indicated the attack range of each anti-aircraft weapon.
As the command was issued, an interlocking fire distribution grid immediately flashed on the screen, with each enemy plane locked onto by at least three different types of weapons.
The main console of the Tianluo System emitted a mechanical electronic sound: "Target locked, fire distribution complete, commencing attack."
……
Above the smoke-filled valley, Lieutenant Wilson was piloting his F-86 "Sabre" fighter, diving to an altitude of 2000 feet, preparing to carry out a bombing run on the Long Country troops in the mountains.
His comrades were scattered all around, forming a standard attack formation.
Twenty-four "Sabres" almost covered the entire sky over the valley, the roaring engine sounds making everything on the ground tremble.
"Look at those bumpkins," Wilson mocked over the radio, "Their anti-aircraft weapons are probably still the scrap metal left over from World War II."
"Bet they can't even hit our shadows," responded Second Lieutenant Brown in the formation, "I see someone setting something up, maybe an old-fashioned anti-aircraft machine gun?"
