Chapter 300: The Second Corpse
Rooftop.
According to Xu Mo, this should be the first crime scene.
Moreover, the killer and the victim must have known each other; otherwise the victim would never leave his unguarded back to a stranger while standing at the edge of the Rooftop… too dangerous.
Han Fei, after bringing up a few police officers, immediately began collecting the biological traces left on the Rooftop.
However, the results were far from satisfactory.
In an open‑air environment, biological traces are hard to preserve.
Before they arrived, most of the biological traces here had already been washed away by wind and rain.
"Han Team, we found nothing; the wind up here is too strong, hair and such can't stay, and it's still drizzling, the fingerprints have been washed away."
After searching for over twenty minutes, the police officers found no useful clues.
Seeing that no useful clues were collected, Han Fei sighed.
"Wrap up the team; start the investigation from the surveillance and the victim's personal connections."
Although they didn't know any valuable leads.
Yet it's not that there are no methods at all.
Investigating through surveillance and the victim's relationships should still yield something.
After all, it is now confirmed that the killer and the victim definitely knew each other!
Back at the Police Station, Han Fei checked the building's surveillance again.
He discovered that the footage showed the victim alone climbing onto the Rooftop, and no one else was on it before or after him, even up to when the body was found.
This case is getting tricky; it may take a while, and I'm afraid we won't be able to solve it…
Considering it was getting late, Han Fei didn't summon all the officers back for the investigation; instead, he let them rest tonight and resume the case first thing tomorrow morning.
The next day.
Because of the case, the officers arrived at the Police Station early, before official working hours.
As soon as everyone reached the Police Station, Han Fei gathered them all and went over the information he had learned last night.
However, at that moment a police emergency call came in.
Just now, another body was discovered, just like the one from last night; this victim also died by jumping off a building.
The operator immediately reported the incident upward.
"Another suicide? Same method—jumping?" Han Fei's expression grew solemn upon hearing the news: "Why this time? Another stock‑trading failure?"
The operator shook his head.
"This victim didn't die from a stock loss; it's said he was lovesick. He's only eighteen this year, a first‑year student at a tech university."
The case from last night hasn't been cleared up yet, and now another shows up.
His intuition told Han Fei that the newly reported victim might not be a suicide… and it's very possible the deaths of the two victims are linked.
But that's only Han Fei's speculation; the exact situation can only be known by visiting the scene.
With that in mind, Han Fei set aside his current tasks and, with part of the team, headed straight to the scene.
…
School.
Before the Police arrived, the school had already evacuated the students in time and sealed off the area, not wanting to frighten more students or amplify the impact.
When Han Fei and his group reached the school, a school official who had been waiting there immediately led them to the scene.
"When was the body discovered?" Han Fei asked after arriving, looking at the corpse on the ground.
The guiding school official recalled.
"About half an hour ago. The student likely jumped from the dormitory roof; the body was found by a student leaving the dorm building for class. As soon as we found it, we sealed off the area and kept people away."
Xu Mo stepped forward, lifted the cloth covering the body, and gave it a quick look.
"The time of death is roughly ten hours ago… also died last night."
Upon hearing that, Han Fei immediately felt a headache.
Since the time of death is also last night, his initial guess seems to be correct.
The deaths of the two victims are very likely connected.
"Why was a body that died yesterday only discovered now?" Wang Dachuan asked, puzzled.
The school official beside him offered an explanation.
"For student safety, the dormitory building is locked at night and only opened the next morning. It was probably too late last night; no students were outside, so the body went unnoticed."
He paused, then quickly added.
"Before you arrived, we had already identified the deceased student and brought his roommate in for questioning. According to the roommate, the student left the dormitory last night and never returned, presumably jumping then. When we asked, the roommate said he was lovesick and, in a moment of despair, … Police comrades, please move the body quickly; if we wait longer, more students will come out, and I fear the repercussions."
The school cannot escape responsibility when a student commits suicide by jumping on campus.
The school official, to avoid widening the impact, naturally wants the police to remove the body promptly.
In his view, this is simply a lovesick student who couldn't see a way out and committed suicide—a routine case with nothing to investigate; the best approach is to downplay it.
After all, a corpse left beneath the dormitory only makes the situation worsen.
It could easily give rise to negative rumors.
"This might not be a simple suicide case," Han Fei declined the school official's request: "We need to inspect the situation first; the scene cannot be disturbed right now."
Upon hearing that, the school official instantly became flustered.
This isn't a simple suicide case?
From that, could it possibly be a murder?
One must understand that suicide and a murderer are completely different concepts.
A student suicide at school only indicates that the school failed to monitor the student's mental health in time.
But if a student is killed while on campus, the nature of the case is entirely different…
"Can you take us to the Rooftop to have a look?", Han Fei said to the school leader.
The latter nodded like a chick pecking at rice: "Sure, sure!"
He now only wants the Police to quickly clarify this matter, then promptly move the corpse, because each minute delayed adds another minute of adverse impact.
Under the school leader's guidance, several police officers arrived at the Rooftop and immediately spread out to look for usable clues.
The situation, of course, was predictable.
Last night's drizzle washed everything clean, leaving not even a trace of clues.
Finding no useful clues, they could do nothing.
"Is there surveillance in the dormitory building?", Han Fei asked.
"There's none on the Rooftop, but there is surveillance in the hallway! If you need it, I can go fetch the footage now,"
"Alright, please copy a copy for us."
The school leader nodded: "Please wait a moment, everyone."
Having said that, he jogged away.
Han Fei stood on the Rooftop, looked around, then glanced down at the corpse on the ground and asked the police officers behind him: "What do you think?"
No one else spoke, except Xu Mo, who said: "It's homicide, and there must be some connection with the case discovered last night; I think we can investigate them together."
