Chapter 510: Doorstep Investigation

"Alright, please wait a moment; I'll make a call to report." Realizing their identity, the receptionist immediately picked up the phone.

Meeting the company's person in charge normally requires an appointment, but police officers are exempt; they have that privilege.

In no time, the receptionist put down the phone, clearly having finished the communication.

"All of you, follow me, this way."

Under the receptionist's guidance, the police officers arrived at the person in charge's office.

The receptionist knocked on the door.

A resonant male voice sounded from inside the office.

"Come in."

Immediately, the receptionist pushed open the office door: "Hu Zong, the person has arrived." ωωw.. net

"Hmm, you may go down." After speaking, Hu Zong patted the petite secretary beside him, who wore a body‑con dress, black stockings, and red‑soled high heels, and said, "You also step out."

He said this while standing up to greet the police officers.

In this line of work, few have a clean backside; when they see police, they act like mice seeing a cat, showing no dignity a boss should have.

"Please sit, Officer, would you like some tea?"

"No need, we're just here to get some information from you." Han Fei didn't waste words, getting straight to the point: "Your company originally built the Binjiang Bridge, right?"

After a brief moment of thought, Hu Zong nodded.

"Yes, what's the matter?"

"Are the employees who originally worked on the bridge still with the company?"

The question truly stumped Hu Zong; he could recall something about the Binjiang Bridge, after all it was a relatively large project his company took over early on, but when asked about the workers who originally built the bridge, he had no recollection at all.

After all, more than twenty years had passed since the bridge's construction, and as the company's top executive, he had too many matters to handle to remember such trivial details.

"Ah, I'm not really sure, but I estimate that few of the staff who participated back then are still with the company, given that it's been over twenty years."

"Officer, what are you looking for those people for?" Hu Zong asked instinctively.

Police officers showing up is never a good omen, especially when they bring up a project from twenty years ago; that is even worse.

Hu Zong didn't know whether this bad omen might involve him, so he wanted to clarify first.

But seeing that Han Fei had no intention of answering, Hu Zong immediately changed his tone.

"I'm just asking casually; if you can't answer, consider it unasked. In that case, I'll have someone look into it for you."

"Alright, thank you, Hu Zong," Han Fei nodded.

"Where does that come from? Police and civilians are like one family; what's with the talk of inconvenience?"

…

In no time, Hu Zong received feedback from his subordinates.

A few of the people who participated in the Binjiang Bridge project are still with the company, and one of them he knows well—his brother‑in‑law.

He didn't immediately tell the police, but instead went to the Restroom.

Of course, he didn't go to the restroom to use the facilities; he went to make a phone call to his brother‑in‑law, to give a heads‑up and inquire about the situation.

Upon returning, Hu Zong got straight to the point.

"Hey, I have a question: did anything unknown to me happen on the Binjiang Bridge project twenty years ago?"

"Binjiang… huh… Binjiang Bridge, what's up, brother‑in‑law? Why are you suddenly… *cough*… asking about this?"

Hearing the heavy breathing of his brother‑in‑law on the other end, Hu Zong's face instantly darkened.

That damn sound was pure joy!

"Just playing, playing, playing—always playing. Can't you have a serious matter for once?"

"What are you saying, brother‑in‑law? How could I not have a serious matter? I... I'm jogging."

"Jogging? Damn, you'll die on a woman's belly sooner or later… I'm not calling to scold you; when the Binjiang Bridge was built, did anything happen on the site?"

The brother‑in‑law on the other end didn't answer immediately.

Just as Hu Zong thought his off‑beat brother‑in‑law was recalling whether anything occurred back then, a sigh of deflation came through the phone.

"Uh… *huff! *"

"Sorry, brother‑in‑law, I'm just busy right now, what did you say?"

His speech was slurred, clearly because he had just lit a cigarette and was holding it in his mouth.

The seasoned Hu Zong recognized from the sound that his brother‑in‑law hadn't been running on the Sheer Cliff.

"Panting, panting, and then lighting a cigarette—how could that be jogging?!"

But he was too lazy to lecture his brother‑in‑law now, so he simply repeated what he had just said.

"The Binjiang Bridge project? I don't recall clearly; probably nothing happened. Besides, it's bridge construction, not forced demolition—what could go wrong? What's up, brother‑in‑law? Why ask this suddenly? Is there something?"

"I'm not sure either," Hu Zong replied. "A few officers came earlier asking about the Binjiang Bridge, but they didn't specify why. If nothing's wrong, that's fine. Come to the company; they should want to see you."

After the call ended, Hu Zong let out a deep sigh.

His brother‑in‑law had indeed taken part in that project; his claim of not recalling any incident indicates nothing memorable happened—no major incident, certainly no fatalities.

When leaving the Restroom, Hu Zong washed his hands but deliberately didn't dry them, and went straight back to the office.

He even, in front of the officers, pretended to make a phone call to urge someone.

"Why does this take so long to check? What do you want from me?"

"Fine, fine, stop the small talk. I'm in a hurry; you have two more minutes. If you can't finish, don't come back tomorrow."

After reprimanding his subordinate, Hu Zong finally looked at Han Fei with an apologetic expression.

"Sorry for keeping you waiting; my staff are too slow, but I've already urged them, and the result should be ready soon."

He didn't want the officers to know the result was already in, let alone that he had already called his brother‑in‑law beforehand to coordinate.

Unexpectedly, as soon as he finished speaking, Xu Mo laughed and said, "Hu Zong, when you were making that phone call just now, you held the phone upside down—the screen side was facing us."

Hu Zong: "……"
