Chapter 535: I Have a Faster Method
At 10:35, the police officers arrived at the Police Station one after another.
There isn't much to introduce about this case, because all the clues the Police have so far are inside this video.
In the conference room, Han Fei projected the video and played it once.
"At 5 minutes 3 seconds, there is a train whistle in the background audio, so I guess the killer's residence is near the railway."
"Also, judging from the house's layout and furnishings, it's clearly an old house in an old community. We should focus our investigation on old communities near the railway. I looked at the map, and the old communities near the railway total only…"
"Han Team, actually I have a faster method," Xu Mo stood up.
"What method?"
"I can directly look up the IP address that uploaded this video; tracking a person via the IP address is much simpler, but the premise is that I need to know which website the uploader used."
Han Fei was startled.
"I forgot we still have you, the computer whiz, here. Wait a moment, I'll ask about that website."
After speaking, Han Fei took out his phone and called the Porn Appraisal Master from earlier.
In no time, Han Fei said the website he had inquired about.
"http: //"
"Give me ten minutes." Xu Mo wrote down the URL, found a computer, and got to work.
For Xu Mo, the hacking expert, locating a person through the online records they left is very easy.
In fact, he finished it in less than five minutes.
"Kangnan Community, Building 6, but I don't know the exact unit number."
"No problem, we've pinpointed the building; we can just check each household!" Han Fei said this was already impressive.
Thanks to Xu Mo, otherwise they would have had to filter community by community.
Xu Mo could directly determine the suspect's community and building number, saving them a great deal of effort.
After learning which building the suspect was in, the police officers didn't waste a moment and set off for Kangnan Community.
Around 11 o'clock, the group arrived at Kangnan Community.
As Han Fei had analyzed, the community was indeed an old one; each building had only six floors, two households per floor, so each building housed just twelve households.
Compared with high‑rises of twenty or thirty floors, checking residents of such an old community is relatively much simpler.
The police officers first went to the first floor.
Just as Wang Dachuan reached out to knock on the door of Room 101, Xu Mo suddenly called out to him.
"No need to knock, it's not here."
"Huh?" Wang Dachuan was startled: "Why?"
Xu Mo pointed at the shoe rack by the door and said, "The residents here are two elderly people."
Following Xu Mo's finger, Wang Dachuan saw several pairs of shoes for the elderly on the rack and lowered his hand that was about to knock.
Next was 102; this time, without Xu Mo's reminder, the officers did not rashly knock on the door.
For the same reason as before, the shoe rack at this household's entrance also held two pairs of elderly shoes.
Then the group went up to the second floor.
At the doorway of Room 201.
There was no shoe rack at this household's entrance, making it hard to judge the residents' identity.
Wang Dachuan raised his hand and knocked three times.
In a moment, a door‑opening sound came from inside.
"Who's there?" The person who opened the door was a middle‑aged man; as he let the police in, he was rubbing his eyes, apparently having been asleep but woken by the knock.
"Sorry to disturb your rest; we're police officers," Wang Dachuan showed his badge and continued, "We're tracking a suspect who is in this building; may we come in to take a look?"
The man glanced at the badge in Wang Dachuan's hand, then surveyed the few people standing outside, and finally turned his body aside.
"Then keep your voices down; don't wake my child. He's sleeping and has to get up early for school tomorrow."
The police officers tiptoed into the room.
There were three bedrooms in the house; one had been turned into a storage room, piled with all sorts of items.
The other two were a master bedroom and a secondary bedroom for the child.
Hearing the commotion outside, the female head of the house put on clothes and left the bedroom, and the male head immediately stepped forward to explain.
"These people are police officers, tracking a suspect who is in our building; they want to come in and look."
The woman's face still showed some worry, but after hearing her husband say that, she immediately relaxed.
She even offered to help.
"Catching the bad guy? Then you have to catch him early! Fellow police, who are you looking for? I know all the residents of this building; maybe I can help you."
The woman's offer to help stemmed mainly from fear that the suspect being pursued might be dangerous and could hurt her child.
"You know everyone in the building?" Han Fei asked instinctively. "That's great; the person we're looking for is a male…"
At that point, Han Fei suddenly realized he didn't actually know the suspect's appearance.
Because the video was shot from a first‑person perspective, the cameraman never showed his face; the only body part visible was the killer's leg, which suggested the shooter was a skinny person.
Recalling the video, Han Fei offered a few descriptors: "He's a skinny guy, not very old, probably in his early twenties. Do you have a resident like that in this building?"
"A skinny young man? Male?" The woman shook her head slowly: "No, most of the residents here are elderly; there are few young people, none matching your description."
Han Fei, of course, would not give up the search in this building because of the woman's remark; he replied, "Then we'll check each household again, thank you."
The couple was not the person they were after, because the furnishings in their room differed completely from those in the video; the video was not filmed in that room.
So after a quick glance, the group left.
Having finished with 201, they planned to knock on the door of 202.
Just as the woman was about to close the door, she saw the police officers preparing to knock on the opposite household's door and reminded them with a comment.
Across the way, no one lives there; you don't need to knock. Originally, an old lady lived there, but a few months ago her son took her to live with him, and this house has been empty ever since.
Xu Mo reached out and touched the doorknob, brushing off a thin layer of dust.
It seems the woman wasn't lying; this household has indeed been vacant for a while.
