Nineteen: The Impulse Toward Death

Yu Lianyun frowned as she finished looking at the photos of the bizarre death scenes. Even though she was a "battle-hardened" forensic pathologist, she couldn't help but feel a chill after seeing those extremely Abnormal ways of dying.

It was hard to imagine how a person could squeeze themselves into a five-centimeter crack. The corpse dug out from that crack was no longer in human shape; to put it bluntly, it was just bits of pulverized flesh.

Furthermore, there was a victim who had crashed into a door while running with their head tilted back. It was unknown how they had managed it, but they had actually forced their own head back until the back of the skull was pressed against the spine, once again bearing witness to the flexibility of human skin, as the victim's neck had not broken excessively because of it.

There were also two others whose methods of death were relatively normal; they had bitten into electrical wires in order to cut the power to a mechanism...

"Speaking of which, aren't you all being a bit excessive?" After looking through these death photos, Yu Lianyun took a moment to recover and said with a somewhat forced laugh, "Although my main job is a forensic pathologist, I am currently a patient, wrapped up like a mummy, and you still want me to help perform an autopsy."

"Oh, the capable should do more, and besides, you are the professional," He Jia'an said with a chuckle, wearing the exact face of a foolish, smiling-tiger leader.

"I'm actually effectively on vacation right now."

"Sigh, as long as you haven't left the workplace, it doesn't count."

Yu Lianyun was speechless, but knowing she couldn't resist and didn't have the thick skin of this bald captain, she had no choice but to help take a look. However, she did have a little revenge of her own; she would make He Jia'an hold the tablet for her, and then pretend to look for a long time in order to see clearly...

He Jia'an held it until his arms were sore, yet there wasn't a hint of resentment on his face; he kept smiling the whole time.

But a single sentence from Yu Lianyun nearly caused He Jia'an's composure to collapse.

"There's nothing to say. Aside from the deaths being a bit strange, there is nothing Abnormal about the bodies from an external examination," Yu Lianyun analyzed and concluded, saying calmly, "Of course, if you want more precise data, an anatomical analysis is indispensable, but just looking at it, this is about all there is."

After finishing, Yu Lianyun looked at He Jia'an with suspicion: "Tell me, is the Xuanmi Group so poor that it doesn't even have a forensic pathologist?"

"We have one, but Captain He wants first-hand information," Wei Jiang explained, "And Captain He is a bit anxious; he can't wait."

"Why?" Yu Lianyun was curious. Since the organization had a forensic pathologist, and one trained by the organization at that, they must be more professional than herself—a pathologist who had only ever examined normal corpses—so what was there to be so impatient about?

"Captain He is blaming himself. After all, those four people were indirectly saved by him, and he had previously told them they were fine, but then this happened last night," Li Yingqi sighed softly.

He Jia'an frowned and said with displeasure, "Don't talk about those unnecessary things."

Upon hearing this, Yu Lianyun couldn't help but think more highly of He Jia'an. She hadn't expected this bald man to be unexpectedly responsible. Hmm, his sense of responsibility was probably as high as his hairline.

"Have there been any changes to the corpse?" Yu Lianyun shifted her angle and asked, "I just feel that this matter isn't simple. If the corpse still possessed such power, I shouldn't have had the chance to escape with my life back then."

"You're actually right; there have indeed been new changes with the corpse." He Jia'an operated the tablet and opened another photo.

Yu Lianyun struggled to lift her head to look at the photo. It was still the young girl wearing the red wedding dress, still the familiar appearance, but the difference was that an Other Shore Flower had grown out of the girl's mouth, bright red as blood and full of vitality.

While Yu Lianyun was looking at the photo, He Jia'an explained from the side: "This was taken by a high-definition camera this morning. This flower wasn't there yesterday; it suddenly grew out of the corpse's mouth in the middle of last night."

As he spoke, He Jia'an asked in return: "Are you sure that you and your father dissected the corpse? Was there really nothing like seeds inside her body?"

"No." Yu Lianyun was very certain. When she examined the corpse at the time, she had checked very carefully. She was quite confident in her own examination and analysis, just as a coder is confident in their finished code.

However, Yu Lianyun added: "But all of that is based on the premise that my father and I were not affected by hallucinations during the forensic identification process. After all, after my father and I finished identifying the corpse, the corpse returned to its original state, just like a monster that respawns every so often in a game. If the corpse didn't have a strong self-healing and regeneration ability, then it is very likely that both my father and I were under a hallucination, and the identification results would not be absolutely reliable."

He Jia'an crossed his arms and fell into deep thought. After a long while, he said to Yu Lianyun, "Alright, regardless of what happens now, you are the only survivor who hasn't died after coming into contact with the corpse. From now on, the three of us will take turns watching over you every day, and there will be other organization partners guarding outside the ward. If anything really happens, as long as you show the slightest sign of something unusual, they will immediately run in to help you."

Yu Lianyun understood and nodded in agreement.

"We plan to transfer the corpse, but as you know, this corpse is very dangerous. Transferring it from the containment room upstairs to another containment facility—if even the slightest mistake happens during this period, it will cost lives. So it needs some time to prepare; at the very least, it will remain here for one more day tonight," He Jia'an comforted Yu Lianyun, saying, "Therefore, tonight will be a sleepless night for you. If I'm not mistaken, at the same time tonight, everything you felt last night will likely happen all over again."

Yu Lianyun felt a bit numb. As long as the matter of the corpse wasn't resolved, she would have to be a miserable victim forever, with the extra-dimensional life eyeing her covetously.

The daytime passed quickly. In order to recover from her injuries faster, Yu Lianyun rested a lot. Almost as soon as she closed and opened her eyes, she switched from day to night, and the person accompanying her had also changed from Li Yingqi to Wei Jiang, who was on duty as her caregiver tonight.

Wei Jiang was someone who looked burly and fierce on the outside, but was actually quite honest and upright. With him accompanying her, Yu Lianyun felt at ease.

"How long have I been asleep?" Yu Lianyun asked Wei Jiang, who was sitting to the side, out of curiosity.

Wei Jiang glanced at the time on his phone and said, "It's 9:55 now. You've slept for almost four or five hours. You finished lunch, took a nap, and then slept until now."

"Then it should be about time," Yu Lianyun said. She had noticed that when she felt the impulse, the clock on the table showed exactly ten o'clock.

The two of them then kept their eyes open, looking at each other in silence, quietly waiting in the ward for the arrival of ten o'clock.

Suddenly, Yu Lianyun felt her limbs twitch violently, and she was instantly twisted in pain. It was actually her broken limbs wanting to move again, and that was not an action her brain wanted to perform.

This time, the impulse was even stronger!
