Chapter 277: 273 The Ability of the Eyes
Riding on a tractor through the bustling crowd, Fang Mu, looking lost and soaked to the bone, appeared quite out of place. He had been rescued by a passing local villager, and because there were no other clothes, he could only drape a coat over his upper body and wrap a snake-skin bag around his waist, looking truly disheveled.
At this point, he had nothing left to quibble about; having seen hell and experienced despair, the filth of the human world could seemingly be brushed off with a smile.
Looking at the clothing and attire of the surrounding crowd, the style of the architecture, and the underdeveloped media equipment, he was certain that he had transmigrated again.
"Do I transmigrate every time I die?" Fang Mu fell into deep thought. He recalled his two deaths; it seemed he had been killed by a tall, mantis-like creature both times, but strangely, he hadn't actually felt the pain of being killed in either instance.
Fang Mu touched his neck and patted his chest; there were no wounds and no pain. He couldn't help but wonder if he had actually been killed, or if he had simply been transported to another era at the moment of death.
While Fang Mu was lost in thought, the villager who had picked him up—a simple and honest older farmer—kindly asked him: "How are you feeling now, little brother? Are you cold?"
His surname was Lin, and his name was Lin Fengtian.
It was currently the autumn season; the leaves were withered and yellow, the wheat seedlings were golden, and the land was a tapestry of harvest reds and yellows. The songs and laughter of a nation celebrating spread satisfaction through the streets and alleys, and even the occasional breeze felt no chill.
Fang Mu snapped back to reality, tightened his coat, and managed a smile on his pale face: "I'm fine, thank you for your help."
"The leaders said that this is a society where everyone helps each other. If you have the ability and others have a need, you should help when you can," Lin Fengtian laughed heartily. "Let's go to my house first, change your clothes, and have a full meal—nice and hot. After that, I'll take you to the Enforcer Brigade."
Fang Mu gave a dry laugh, his mind beginning to calculate the wording for his conversation with the Enforcers later.
Just like last time, he would pretend to have amnesia...
Suddenly, Fang Mu heard a buzzing sound. A sharp, thin noise pierced through his ears and went straight into his brain. An abnormal sensation followed, and his eyes seemed to see hallucinations: the scenery in front of him flickered between a dirt road and an asphalt road, the sides of the road shifting between bustling crowds and flowing futuristic vehicles. The intense visual transformation made Fang Mu dizzy once again.
Noticing that Fang Mu's complexion was wrong, Lin Fengtian hurriedly stopped the vehicle and asked with concern: "What's wrong, little brother? Are you feeling unwell?"
"I... I'm fine... Ugh!" Fang Mu looked at Lin Fengtian. The other man's face gradually grew younger in his eyes, then rapidly aged, even turning into a talking, rotting corpse. The bizarre image stimulated Fang Mu so much that he fainted on the spot.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey! Little brother! Damn, he fainted again!" Half-conscious, Fang Mu heard Lin Fengtian's anxious voice. He jumped off the tractor, grabbed a young person from the crowd—seemingly asking them to drive the tractor back to his home—and then ran back, hoisted Fang Mu onto his back, and hurriedly wove against the flow of the crowd.
In reality, Fang Mu was completely unconscious for only a short while. For the rest of the time, although he did not wake up, he had been thinking.
Lin Boss of that Forest Cabin had once said that the pair of Nail Hammers he bought were divine artifacts that had once killed a monster named Chaos. They were items belonging to a pair of gods, and the original intention of those gods in using the Nail Hammers was to help Chaos open his Seven Orifices, allowing Chaos to hear what they could hear, see what they could see, and taste what they could taste.
And now, he had used the Nail Hammers to reopen his own orifices. Opening the Ear Aperture had greatly increased his hearing, allowing him to hear sounds beyond the range of human hearing and the fragmented whispers from the Different Dimensional Space. Before this transmigration, he had also had his Eye Aperture opened by the Toad God for unknown reasons, so his eyes must have undergone corresponding changes.
Could the scene he had just seen be the scenery that those two gods could see?
The bizarre scenery Fang Mu had just seen seemed to connect the past and future of things. He had seen the changes occurring on this land, as well as the past and future appearance of Lin Fengtian.
"I should be able to control my eyes just like I control my hearing." Fang Mu did not feel happy about gaining a new superpower, because besides being able to see the changes in all things across different times, he could also see some scenes that transcended ordinary things: sometimes a scene of rotting flesh and blood, sometimes a pitch-black and deep darkness, and other times strange, distorted space-times filled with flowing light and twisted colors and lines.
Those Abnormal scenes reminded Fang Mu of the mysterious ancient palace where the Toad God resided, giving one a fear of the unknown rooted deep in the soul. Those scenes were just like the sneaky whispers he would occasionally hear—one could not look, and one could not listen, otherwise, it would cause one's brain to become disordered, gradually lose sanity, and go completely insane.
In order to adapt to the ability of his eyes, the newly awakened Fang Mu now tried his best not to stare at any one thing for too long. He discovered that as long as he didn't deliberately exert force on his eyes, observe something for too long, or have the intention to use his eye power, he generally wouldn't see those bizarre scenes.
Cared for by Brother Lin Fengtian and his friends and neighbors, and coupled with Fang Mu's forced vivid performance, he once again successfully fooled the Enforcers and subsequently moved into Lin Fengtian's home under the identity of an amnesiac.
Taking care of Fang Mu was a task Lin Fengtian had taken upon himself.
Facing such an enthusiastic and kind older farmer, Fang Mu could not help but feel guilty. He could only think to try his best not to cause trouble for Lin Fengtian's family, and then think about how to repay their family.
Lin Fengtian felt that since Fang Mu had woken up from the water, something related to water must have happened before he lost his memory, so he simply called Fang Mu "A-Shui."
Perhaps by calling him that, Fang Mu would be able to recall something.
Fang Mu dared not have any objections. Of course, he actually felt it didn't matter what he was called; at least it wasn't an insulting term.
"A-Shui, stop moving things. Although it's autumn now, the sun is still fierce. Come in and drink some water." At Lin Fengtian's house, a woman who looked to be about fifty or sixty years old saw Fang Mu moving things back from the village committee again and immediately greeted him with a beaming smile, inviting him into the house.
"Sister-in-law, I'm fine, my body is doing well now." Fang Mu said with a calm smile, and after putting down the stack of books the village committee had given him, he obediently went into the house to drink water.
During these days, Fang Mu had been adapting to his bizarre abilities while integrating into the life of this village. He had now basically adapted to the ability of his eyes; although he still couldn't control it very well, he wouldn't have too much of an emotional reaction even if he saw some strange scenery now.
Habit and adaptation are a unique talent of humanity.
In this day and age, anyone who could read and write, write well, and had a good literary style was a talent. The village committee happened to be short of someone who was both free and capable of writing propaganda. Upon learning that Fang Mu had such abilities, they immediately took him on to help, paying him a wage that wasn't small.
Fang Mu had also studied history and had a rough understanding of this era. He would display insights and knowledge that transcended this era, but he would show restraint and try his best to keep a low profile.
Looking up again at his sister-in-law's eager smile, the other person had now turned into a young woman in her twenties, still somewhat pure and pretty.
In reality, Lin's sister-in-law was nearly forty years old, having spent all day doing housework, her youth long gone and her beauty faded.
Fang Mu felt somewhat helpless about this. Now, when he walked down the street, he didn't dare to talk or greet people casually, because sometimes he couldn't be sure what age the person he was seeing actually was, and he didn't even know if he was greeting the air, as it was possible he was seeing a scene from some future moment.
