Chapter 310: 306 Mouth Sounds

~7 min read 1,238 words

After clicking on the video, Ji Jian saw only pitch black; the video blogger had clearly uploaded only an audio file and no visuals.

This was nothing unusual in the world of Sleep Aid Videos, as most were auditory, and visual sleep aid videos were not very common.

Tsk— tsk—

Ji Jian heard two tongue-clicking sounds and felt his heart give a jolt. He stroked the goosebumps rising on his arms. "Sss, hooked from the first sound? Interesting, sounds quite evocative."

Interested in this so-called "underworld" sleep aid video, Ji Jian clicked on the comment section below, wanting to see the thoughts of other netizens. But the moment his mouse clicked the section, the client prompted, "This video blogger has closed the comment section," showing it as unavailable for comments.

Ji Jian's interest in the video grew even stronger. Either the sleep aid video was truly "underworld" and the blogger was afraid of being cursed at by netizens, or the quality was poor and the blogger feared being mocked by the crowd.

He looked down at the blogger's account information and was surprised to find the username was a raw ID, "ID7277869." This indicated the blogger had never changed their account info since registration. The account level was low, likely just registered, and the follower count was a mere single digit: 7. Clicking on the avatar to view their uploaded videos, there was currently only one work, uploaded today.

"Let's see how your technique is. I hope you're a treasure of a blogger. If the experience is decent, I'll give you a follow," Ji Jian thought to himself. He currently followed 86 bloggers he was interested in, many of whom were sleep aid bloggers.

Although Ji Jian didn't follow these sleep aid videos strictly for the sake of "sleep," several bloggers' content truly resonated with him. Listening before bed was genuinely relaxing for his brain and had helped him through many sleepless nights.

Like most contemporary youth, he suffered from a certain degree of difficulty falling asleep.

Don't let his usual devil-may-care, carefree appearance fool you; in reality, he had his own anxieties. He was just used to escaping them. But once the night grew quiet and he lay in bed alone, those anxieties and distracting thoughts he had to face would catch up to his idling mind, swarming in and leaving him restless.

A house, a car, savings, a spouse... Ji Jian possessed none of the elements those around him expected him to have. In his daily life, he tried his best to avoid these topics, not wanting to bear the weight they placed on his shoulders.

However, Ji Jian also knew that one day, he would have to possess them, and he would not be able to avoid facing these difficulties.

At the mere thought of these unknowns—which he could not and dared not imagine yet—crashing down on his head one day, fear, worry, and anxiety would rise like a tide, gradually threatening to drown his little island of reason.

Therefore, Ji Jian needed to fall asleep quickly. He wanted peaceful sleep; he didn't want to let his mind wander while waiting to drift off, and he certainly didn't want his sleep quality ruined by messy nightmares once he was under.

Before his insomnia escalated to the level of needing medication, Ji Jian pinned his hopes on folk remedies that wouldn't affect his physiology. The sleep aid video he was listening to right now was one such remedy.

While Ji Jian checked the blogger's status, the sound in the sleep aid video changed as the progress bar advanced.

It was a series of rapid, whispered tongue-clicks and saliva sounds, accompanied by a certain amount of teeth-clashing, making one wonder just how flexible the tongue and mouth of the person creating these mouth sounds must be.

These mouth sounds were different from anything Ji Jian had heard before. The recording equipment was good, for one, and the stinging sensation of the sound wasn't too intense; it was just right for stimulating the auditory regions of the brain, and it quickly made Ji Jian feel drowsy.

"Not bad, not bad." Ji Jian was very satisfied. He turned off his screen, turned off the lights, switched to background playback, lay in bed, and put on his earphones to listen to the sleep aid video.

Closing his increasingly heavy eyelids, Ji Jian shut his eyes. Everything was dark, and it felt as if all his perception was concentrated on his hearing, making him even more sensitive to the sounds in the video.

It was at this moment that Ji Jian gradually understood why the video was named "underworld."

With his eyes closed, his hearing became sharp, and his brain's imagination began to stir. He couldn't help but picture the person making the sounds, hallucinating the organs that produced them.

The eerie thing was that Ji Jian couldn't imagine this being a sound a human could make.

Thinking about it carefully, this wasn't something a normal person could do. Who could make sounds of a tongue stirring in a mouth while simultaneously making sounds of teeth gnawing?

Was it the result of audio synthesis?

Or were there multiple people making sounds together?

Ji Jian couldn't be sure, but he felt the sounds in this sleep aid video didn't seem like a product of audio synthesis, nor did they sound like they came from two different mouths. The sounds were too harmonious, as if they came entirely from "one mouth."

Could the blogger be a master editor who took different sounds made by one person's mouth, perfectly performed each part, and then used superb editing techniques to perfectly combine and piece together every recorded segment?

Ji Jian could only assume as much; otherwise... he couldn't help but imagine a deformed mouth, completely different from a normal person's.

He didn't know how much time had passed when the sound in the sleep aid video changed again. This time it wasn't mouth sounds, but other noises—similar to the sound of kneading some kind of flexible material, and one could hear the elastic sound of the object rebounding under the pressure.

But perhaps because the material lacked resilience, Ji Jian soon heard the sound of the object being pinched until it burst, accompanied by a squelching, mushy sound, and the sound of some unknown sticky substance peeling off skin. It sounded wet and viscous.

With his eyes closed, Ji Jian couldn't help but imagine his mother taking minced meat, scooping it into a ball, and rolling it in her hands. That was the closest sound he had ever heard to this.

Following that came a mouth-opening sound that made him frown. The kneaded object seemed to have been eaten, and the mouth that had just produced the mouth sounds was now making chewing sounds of meat.

At the thought that it might be raw meat, Ji Jian couldn't help but shudder, thinking: What on earth is this eating?

Listening further, even more unsettling sounds came through the earphones. It was the sound of joints and muscles being torn apart raw. But the hands taking the bone and meat apart seemed to have infinite strength; there was almost no sound of exertion, the bone and meat were torn away very smoothly, followed by a teeth-aching sound of gnawing.

Ji Jian's imagination ran wild. What exactly was this person eating, and how much strength did they have?
