Chapter 335: The Monster in the Elevator
"What a miserable way to die; the body can't even be pieced back together." Enforcer Captain Li Hao glanced at the corpse that had practically been packed away, shaking his head in a way that showed he couldn't bear to look.
Even with his extensive enforcement experience and having seen far too many heinous criminal cases, he still could not remain numb or indifferent when faced with such wretchedly mangled corpses.
The rookie Enforcer Wang Han found it even harder to look; he had originally wanted to feign composure, but when he saw the white cloth being lifted by the fierce evening wind, that "glimpse of a lifetime" acted like a potent poison, and he immediately couldn't help but retch repeatedly.
"Are you alright, little Wang?" Seeing Wang Han's reaction, Li Hao thought to himself that this top student from the Enforcer University still lacked tempering.
Wang Han quickly adjusted his emotions, gulping down several mouthfuls of air, and his mood finally calmed down slowly; the physical discomfort was gradually receding, and he waved his hand at Li Hao, saying, "Brother Li, I... I'm fine now, I can do it."
Li Hao chuckled and shook his head, recounting the case information on the spot: "The deceased is named Zhao Zheng, thirty-three years old, captain of the property security team. He was on the night shift today. While exchanging patrol zones with his colleague Hu Mo during the night patrol, they discovered a malfunction in the elevator during the handover. Then, while testing where the problem was, an accident occurred. He fell from the top floor here all the way to the bottom. However, the cause of death wasn't the fall; it was being crushed by the falling elevator while trying to exit it."
As if imagining that tragic scene, Wang Han's stomach, which had only just settled, immediately began to churn again, and he ran to a nearby flower bed to vomit violently.
Seeing this, Li Hao shook his head secretly. Then, hearing some noisy sounds from the side, he looked toward the source and saw that young security guard, pale-faced and wrapped in a blanket, who was currently arguing excitedly with an Enforcer, shouting: "I'm telling the truth, please believe me! I really saw it! The moment the elevator fell, I saw it—there was really a monster inside!"
Hearing this, Li Hao frowned slightly and walked over.
Catching sight of Li Hao approaching, that Enforcer immediately looked at him and hurriedly called out "Team Leader" respectfully; Hu Mo, standing to the side, also looked over.
"What's the situation?" Li Hao asked the Enforcer who had just been arguing with Hu Mo, his gaze shifting to Hu Mo.
The Enforcer immediately responded: "Team Leader, you've come just in time. This gentleman keeps saying he saw a monster the moment the elevator fell. But after searching the accident scene, other than Zhao Zheng's body tissues, we didn't see any traces of other unknown biological remains."
As he spoke, he didn't forget to advise Hu Mo: "Sir, your mind must be very chaotic right now and you aren't very steady. Look at this distance of several hundred meters—falling straight down from such a height, what kind of monster could possibly be safe and sound?"
Hu Mo fell silent, not knowing if he was thinking that what the other party said had some merit, or if he felt there was no need to continue, and gave up on insisting.
Li Hao watched Hu Mo's expression for a moment, then turned his head and asked: "Has the Dimension Factor been measured?"
"Measured, it's normal."
"Good, you're not needed here anymore, leave it to me." Li Hao said to the Enforcer, letting him leave first.
Just as Li Hao was about to say something to Hu Mo, Wang Han, who had been vomiting nearby, walked over with a face even paler than the traumatized Hu Mo, looking disheveled and weak as he said: "Team Leader, in the determination of Abnormal events, the concentration of Dimension Factor is not an absolute criterion."
"I know, but that applies to most situations." Li Hao silently praised this young Enforcer in his heart; even though he was physically uncomfortable and afraid, he hadn't forgotten rational thinking—a rare and commendable quality for an Enforcer.
Hearing the conversation between the two, Hu Mo's expression shifted, and his gaze carried a glimmer of hope: "Are you willing to believe what I said?"
"Tell me more about it first. What exactly did you see, and why didn't you mention that you also saw a monster when you first gave your statement?" Li Hao did not give him a definitive answer, but asked instead.
Hu Mo's expression immediately turned dejected, and he lowered his head slightly, saying: "I was scared. I also doubted myself before, thinking I was just startled and that my eyes had played tricks on me. But after calming down, every time I close my eyes... the appearance of that monster, every part of that monster... it's like it's branded into my brain. It was too real!"
Li Hao and Wang Han exchanged a look, and Wang Han asked Hu Mo: "Can you describe what that monster looked like?"
As he spoke, he pulled a ballpoint pen from his chest pocket, then took out a palm-sized notebook from his pocket, prepared to record, and listened quietly to Hu Mo's recollection.
"It was huge. Its green body almost filled the entire elevator car. Its red eyes glowed like light bulbs. Its slimy skin was as smooth and delicate as an eel's. It had no hair on its body, but the tentacles on it hung down just like hair..." The more Hu Mo spoke, the more he felt difficulty breathing; his body temperature seemed to be dropping rapidly, and his heart felt like it was freezing and about to burst open.
Wang Han frowned tightly, his pen moving rapidly. He wasn't recording words, but drawing a picture. He was trying to draw the monster Hu Mo described, but somehow, he felt as if he had also seen that monster. The pen in his hand uncontrollably drew out Wang Han's imperfect abstract description, and he was shocked that he could add details of the monster's appearance that the other party hadn't even mentioned based on the limited description; he felt a chill go down his spine.
Li Hao also felt an inexplicable chill on the back of his neck. He glanced at Wang Han's drawing, and his eyebrows jumped in shock.
Clearly, Li Hao had also imagined the monster's appearance and posture from Hu Mo's description just now, but he had never expected that the monster he imagined could be so similar to the image Wang Han was drawing.
No! It could practically be said to be exactly the same!
The pen in his hand danced wildly, and within a few minutes, Wang Han had finished drawing the monster.
Wang Han looked at the drawing in his hand, and the more he looked, the more he felt something was wrong. He flipped the notebook around to let Hu Mo see his drawing, while hurriedly asking: "Is this what it looks like!?"
"That's it! That's it!" Hu Mo was so terrified he lost his voice and screamed, retreating a few steps in fear, but his heel accidentally hit the stairs, and he immediately lost his balance and fell backward.
Crack!
Hu Mo fell in a strange posture. His neck made a violent, crisp sound, bending at an angle of nearly ninety degrees from the middle, his eyes wide open.
Wang Han was stunned on the spot; the pen and notebook slipped from his hands and slid onto the ground.
For a moment, he was in a trance; everything before his eyes became blurred and hazy, and the sounds reaching his ears were like listening through seawater. He only saw Li Hao, face flushed red, shouting at the crowd in front of him: "Ambulance! Ambulance! Save him!! Hurry!"
Did they not see it?
There is a monster, sitting right on top of Hu Mo.
