Chapter 360: Brain Invasion
Inside the laboratory isolation chamber, which flickered with mysterious blue and red lights, Wei Chengye stood outside a water tank filled with metal conduits as a virtual projection, his eyelids not blinking for a moment as he stared at the fresh brain active within the tank.
When the experimental apparatus here is in operation, Wei Chengye is the only one who can freely enter and exit this place.
This is not out of consideration for confidentiality, but for the sake of safety.
When the experimental apparatus here begins to function, the water tank often emits the same kind of blue and red flashing light seen now. People exposed to these rays often suffer from varying degrees of radiation-like illness, yet existing instruments cannot detect any evidence of radiation in the human body; however, humans still exhibit symptoms of high-concentration radiation exposure, with the body undergoing pathological changes, from outside to inside, from inside to outside, until finally, every part of the body suffers malignant distortion, torturing the person to death while they are still alive.
And the most bizarre and deadly situation is that you would think a person's body, twisted and festering to this extent, should not be able to survive, yet they somehow remain alive and conscious; even though the distorted individual has given up the belief in living, and those around them cannot bear to see them in such pain and want to help them end their life, it is as if some twisted demon is controlling their life and death, stubbornly refusing to let them die, even if their heart is pierced or a lethal dose of poison is injected into their body... This leads to the final result where the person often does not die from the body's pathological changes, but is first destroyed and broken down mentally.
This is the reason why others are forbidden from entering when this experimental apparatus is activated.
As for why the experimental apparatus is so strange and special, it is because this technology was obtained from data left behind by an Abnormal organization; there are too many factors within it that ordinary people cannot understand, and the scientists of the Xuanmi Group simply followed the leftover blueprints to construct the experimental apparatus without further thought.
After the Heaven-Level Abnormal disaster event involving the kidnapping of Professor Kelake in Fengxiang City, which cost the lives of a large number of innocent civilians in the city and the Investigators dispatched on the mission—including the Xuanmi Group's precious S-Class Xuanmi Investigator Yu Lianyun—and with many of the Investigators dispatched for the subsequent cleanup also "dying in accidents," it was only through the cost of countless precious lives that the Xuanmi Group and other Investigator Organizations were able to find the "traces" left behind in this event from the pollution-filled ruins, which included certain inscrutable evil Ancient Books, broken corpses of Abnormal creatures, and experimental reports of various forbidden experiments.
Today, this experimental apparatus, known as the Brain Cell Invasion Device, was restored based on a report titled "Invasion of Brain Cells Experimental Research" from those forbidden experimental reports; because it involves aspects difficult for modern science to understand, the scientists cannot know the key driving principle of this device, only knowing that as long as the extract separated from an Abnormal creature is placed inside, and then connected in this way, it can invade the brain cells of the experimental subject, pry into the memories deep within the subject's mind, and to a certain extent, manipulate and alter the development of those memories.
Wei Chengye actually does not want to replicate this experiment from the bottom of his heart, but in this gradually collapsing world, in order to seek a glimmer of hope for human survival, he has to choose to restart this experiment.
And the first subject of the experiment's invasion is the owner of this brain, a person who had just died and was an experiencer and victim of an Abnormal event—Wang Han, a rookie Enforcer.
Not long ago, a shocking and vicious Abnormal disaster event occurred in Baizhou City; the disaster level could actually reach Heaven-Level, because more than one powerful Alien God had appeared, but since the disaster mainly occurred in the Different Dimensional Space and had less impact on the Real World, the disaster level was only classified as Earth-Level.
A group of lawless Abnormal organizations from other regions, the Blood Rose Knights, invaded the local Shenzhou Region, bewitched, roped in, and controlled many local women with high status in the political and financial circles in Baizhou City, using them to revive the Bloody Empress who had been banished from the Real World years ago and was fallen and sleeping in the Different Dimensional Space.
Several individuals who were not part of the Xuanmi Group, led by Wang Han, Li Yuning, and Li Hao, and who were not entirely professional Investigators, successfully joined forces to stop the Bloody Empress and her kin who were about to invade the Real World after their revival, protecting the common people of the Real World, though they inevitably paid a heavy price, as almost none of them survived.
This was also the case for Wang Han; when his corpse was carried back from the Different Dimensional Space, his state of death was terrifying, with the brain being the only organ in his entire body that remained relatively intact.
In order to investigate the causes and consequences of the Abnormal event in Baizhou City, Wei Chengye decided to put Wang Han's brain into the Brain Cell Invasion experiment.
But Wei Chengye wants to know more than that; he also wants to know the relationship between Wang Han and the Forest Cabin.
He had already learned from the veteran Enforcer and survivor Li Hao that Wang Han had once entered the Forest Cabin, and Wei Chengye, who is investigating the background of the Forest Cabin, is urgently trying to peel back the layers of the other person's brain memories to discover more intelligence about the Forest Cabin.
And Wang Han's brain did indeed retain those few important memories; Wei Chengye has already seen the images restored through the feedback of the brain cells processed by the instrument on the display screen, and from the not-so-clear footage, he finally obtained news about the Forest Cabin.
It can be said that this is a breakthrough.
Not only does he know the location of the Forest Cabin, the external and internal environment of the Forest Cabin, but also the mental state of the residents and workers of the Forest Cabin; he believes that their identities will soon be uncovered, and Wei Chengye has even realized the method to enter the Different Dimensional Space where the Forest Cabin is located—one must be a victim currently suffering from an Abnormal event, and this person must have a strong desire to enter the Forest Cabin.
Of course, the criteria for entering the Different Dimensional Space are still not rigorous enough; accurately speaking, it is aimed at "ordinary people" who lack the means to deal with Abnormal events, as it is difficult for people like the various highly skilled Xuanmi Investigators to meet such conditions, which is why they have been unable to find the entrance to the Forest Cabin.
"The deceased Xuanmi Investigator Wei Jiang continues to live in the world in an incredible state, but his identity has changed, becoming a member of the Abnormal, a clerk of that strange Forest Cabin."
"Li Yuning, a survivor of the Ancient Calamity Incident more than ten years ago, whose adoptive father was Li Jiahong, who was also a survivor.
Upon investigation, Li Jiahong has been missing for many years, and Li Yuning also mysteriously disappeared after this incident; Li Yuning should have died from using power that could not be withstood, and a corpse similar to Wang Han's should have been left at the scene, yet not even a bit of Li Yuning's DNA could be collected from the scene, as if she had never appeared."
