Chapter 94: 92 Tension (Supplementary Post)
92 Tension (Supplementary Post)
Seeing the female student collapse as if struck by a sudden, violent illness, the people around her immediately rushed over in anxiety. Yu Lianyun checked the female student's condition and discovered that the other party's oral cavity was rotting in a bizarre manner, and this rot was not coming from the outside, but was spreading from the inside out.
It was as if, all of a sudden, corrosive sulfuric acid had been generated within the flesh and muscle tissue of the female student's oral cavity, eroding her mouth clean from the inside out.
This was the first time everyone had experienced such a bizarre event. In order to save the female student's life, everyone could only send her to the hospital at the first opportunity.
After watching the female student being sent away in an ambulance, Shang Wei asked Yu Lianyun, "Captain Yu, did you manage to ask anything?"
"Aside from those few syllables that everyone heard, there was no other useful information." Yu Lianyun shook her head. This was the first survivor she had visited, but she was no longer prepared to continue visiting others.
What happened to the female student seemed to have triggered some kind of restriction; it looked as if some Abnormal race was deliberately hiding their information.
"Go back and check to see if anything similar has appeared in the files recorded by the Xuanmi Group," Yu Lianyun said to Shang Wei.
"Understood." Shang Wei nodded respectfully; he had been thinking the same thing.
……
Drake walked past the stretch of rocky beach known as the End of the World and arrived before the narrow, deep tunnel he had been thinking of.
The tunnel was not wide, about 1.2 meters or so, barely enough for two people who were not too large to walk side by side; any more people and they would likely be rubbing shoulders. It did not seem particularly special either; one could see the end at a glance, and the exit on the other side was about a hundred meters or so from the entrance where he stood.
Yet, for such a simple and ordinary tunnel, Drake still regarded it as the key to solving the case.
Since he could be almost lured into the sea by a mysterious force, he must have, like those missing persons, inadvertently done the same thing.
Drake recalled this carefully and only then confirmed that the few and easily overlooked things he and the missing persons had done was that they had all walked through this narrow tunnel.
This tunnel was said to have previously led to an Air Raid Shelter, and later, after some minor modifications, it became the ordinary tunnel that graffiti artists loved to visit, leading directly to the famous scenic spot of Liuhua Port, the End of the World. Most of the protagonists of the Mysterious Disappearance Case had passed through this place shortly before their incidents.
As someone who had just arrived in Liuhua Port and had not been in this harbor city for long, Drake was not familiar with the roads in the city, so this tunnel with its somewhat unique environment left a relatively deep impression on him.
Drake walked into the tunnel again. Perhaps it was psychological, or perhaps the environment of this ancient tunnel was indeed excessively deep and silent, but he felt an unusual sensation he had not experienced before, as if pairs of eyes were staring at him from beneath the secluded shadows.
Drake broke into a cold sweat involuntarily and frequently looked back to scan, but he discovered nothing.
And just as he looked behind him once, he heard a voice coming from behind him again. The voice was calling his name, weeping and pleading, filled with humble, timid, and pitiful begging.
Drake went rigid. As a stranger returning home for the first time, he had not made a single acquaintance from the Divine Land in the thirty-some years he lived in the New York region. After coming here, he had also consistently maintained his solitary style of conduct. Aside from that mission contact, he had never told his real name to anyone. So, who could it be that was calling his name so accurately now?
Drake turned his head stiffly, only to see that it was still empty behind him, but he caught sight of a necklace left behind near a wall covered in moss and lichen in the tunnel.
He bit the bullet, stepped forward, and picked up the necklace to examine it.
It was a silver necklace, covered in rust and smeared with unknown slime. Drake couldn't help but guess that it might have been dragged here by a stray dog or cat.
The pendant part of the necklace consisted of two oval silver pieces the size of a thumb's nail, engraved with a set of runes. At first glance, they appeared to be ancient characters of the Divine Land system, but Drake did not know which dynasty they belonged to.
He noticed that the interior of the egg-like silver pieces was hollow. He guessed that this thing might be able to be opened, so after studying how to open it for a while, he finally opened it and saw what was inside the oval silver piece.
It was an old photo of a mother and child. The part depicting the woman had become blurred due to wear, time, and improper preservation, but Drake guessed that this might have been a gentle and delicate beautiful mother, and the woman was softly holding an infant in her arms.
Unlike the woman, the child's appearance was still clearly visible. He had a liveliness and cuteness that even the yellowed old photo could not conceal, and a pair of round, curious eyes that seemed to be able to gaze affectionately at him through the photo.
Looking at the photo, Drake's mood calmed down. He no longer heard the voice calling him, nor did he feel the sense of being watched. He felt that the strangeness he had just experienced was perhaps the result of his being too nervous.
It was the media reports and the Abnormal events recounted by his peers that had made his heart overly sensitive. Those events had become more vivid and bizarre after their embellishment and processing, making him instinctively feel excessive awe toward these matters.
Of course, the experience of almost drowning in the sea while sleepwalking tonight was also the main factor that had made his heart extremely unsettled earlier.
Putting this valuable necklace into his pocket, Drake walked toward the exit he had come from.
When he walked out of the tunnel, the warm sun hitting his face made him feel as comfortable and pleasant as a spring breeze. The cold sweat on his body slowly lost its icy temperature under the sun's effect, and Drake felt a warmth spreading from the outside in.
Drake stretched and intended to go nearby to eat breakfast. A boy of about twelve or thirteen years old, holding a storage box labeled with a certain brand of laundry detergent, stumbled to his side, passed him, and finally placed the box in front of the tunnel entrance.
Drake curiously glanced at the items in the storage box and found that they were all items favored by adolescent boys, such as suggestive glamour magazines, game consoles, game cartridges, and other digital electronic products, cards, figures, and other toys. Almost everything popular among teenagers today that one could think of was in the storage box.
Seeing the boy looking somewhat pained and reluctant, he placed the items along with the storage box at the entrance of the tunnel, then took a greeting card from his pocket and placed it on top of the storage box.
Drake felt curious about this and asked the boy, "What are you doing?"
The boy turned around and saw Drake. Perhaps because mixed-race people were relatively rare, he looked at him with curiosity for a while before explaining, "I'm mailing something."
"Mailing something?" Drake was a bit startled. "Shouldn't you go to a courier point for that?"
The boy shook his head. "A courier point has no way to mail things to my brother."
"Why?"
"Because he is already dead."
