Chapter 70: The Company V
"Employee NC770416, congratulations. You have passed the review. Effective immediately, you are officially joining the Arasaka Corporation's Night City Branch — Counter-Intelligence Division."
"F*ck! Congratulations! V, this is a giant leap."
Colleague Harry leaned in behind V, looking at the notification message on the computer screen, shaking her shoulders excitedly as if he himself had been promoted.
"Calm down, calm down, Harry." V soothed Harry with feigned composure, though a slight curve still escaped at the corner of her mouth.
"Well done! You seized a one-in-a-million chance! I knew you had the strength!" Harry's face was flushed, his whole body trembling, speaking somewhat incoherently, "I failed this time, but losing to you is no injustice!"
Harry and V both belonged to the reserve ranks of the Counter-Intelligence Division, considered a competitive relationship, yet the two got along quite well.
"I'll be waiting for you in the Counter-Intelligence Division." V gently pressed the somewhat out-of-control Harry back into his seat, to avoid attracting the annoyance of other colleagues due to the loud noise.
"Did you need me to tell you that? Besides you, everyone else is rotten fish and shrimp!" Harry also came to his senses, lowered his voice, and secretly pointed with his middle finger at the other colleagues in the office who were pretending to be busy.
When you are more excellent than others, wherever you go, you cannot avoid others' jealousy.
Being able to know a friend like Harry in the Company, V felt already very satisfied.
As for those other jealous dogs, let them bark wildly.
They are no longer people of the same world.
"When you get off work, shall we go drink together?" V glanced at the computer, confirmed that her work tasks for today were already over-completed, and said to Harry next door.
"Although I really wanted to go celebrate with you..." Harry awkwardly scratched the back of his head, "I haven't finished my work today yet... it's about that case regarding the Kang Tao Robots..."
"Look at your cowardly state..." V shook her head, "Give me a share, I'll go back and help you rush it, and send it to you in a while."
"Alright! Sister V!" Harry nodded hurriedly; after all, this round of promotion selection had already failed, so finding an expert to help was not without merit.
Working at Arasaka Corporation, most of the time only results matter.
"Then I'll pack up my things and leave first." V said while counting the personal items on the computer desk.
Tomorrow I have to move to the official Counter-Intelligence Division office, so I must prepare in advance.
"Happy troubles." Harry made a funny face at her, and after sending the file to V's email, he buried his head again to continue working on the case.
V smiled silently, packed some of her small items into a black bag, stood up, and left her workstation.
Along the way, most of the other colleagues in the office kept their heads down, pretending not to see her.
Do losers deserve to look directly at the heroic posture of the successful?
Truly a group of mud that cannot be plastered onto a wall, stupid fools.
V thought, a mocking smile hanging on her lips.
A female colleague walking towards her, seeing that she could not avoid it, had to steel her nerves and reluctantly bow her head to greet V.
V had a bit of an impression of this female colleague; relying on her looks, she ran to have fun with leaders and colleagues every day, fantasizing that she was already close to promotion, looking down on people with her nose in the air every day, acting as if she were the only one in the world.
However, in the face of absolute hard strength, all these self-righteous little tricks are like earth chickens and clay dogs, only fit to be crushed under her steel war chariot.
Although Arasaka Corporation has various flaws, in the appointment of personnel concerning the company's lifeline, it is not ambiguous at all, disregarding personal relationships, and respecting only strength.
Perhaps this is also one of the reasons why Arasaka can still stand firm amidst surrounding powerful forces and those watching hungrily.
V pondered these trivial matters while stepping in red-soled high heels, taking the elevator, and slowly leaving the company building.
Pity that Harry cannot come to drink with her.
For such a good thing worth celebrating, friends gathering together makes it lively enough.
V touched her chin, walked on the road leading to the garage, took out her phone, and dialed Jack's number.
"Buenasnoches! (Good evening), girl! Something up?"
"Hey! Jack!" Perhaps influenced by the emotion of the man on the other end of the phone, V's tone also became bold, completely different from the cold aura she had at the company. "Got plans tonight? If not, call Misty, let's go out drinking together! I successfully got promoted!"
"Jooooo! (F*ck), congratulations girl! V! I knew you could do it!" Excited shouting came from Jack on the other end of the phone.
"Calm down, calm down, Jack, you're making my ears ring!" V teased softly, though a smile of joy could not be stopped from flowing across her face.
"Hey! Perfect timing, I recently found a really great bar. The shop is a bit small, but absolutely interesting! How about, taking this opportunity, we go check it out?" Jack calmed down a bit, but his voice still overflowed with sincere excitement.
"Send the shop name and address quickly!" Having worked at Arasaka Corporation for quite some time, V was accustomed to having a few drinks after work, treating it as stress relief.
Over time, drinking had become a habit.
The rookie who used to get red-faced and drunk after one drink had grown into a drinking queen who could hold a thousand cups, even Jack, known for his huge capacity, couldn't beat her.
So as soon as a new bar was mentioned, she was like a shark smelling blood, completely excited.
"OKOK, V..." Jack scratched his head, finding V's urgency both amusing and frustrating, "By the way, should we invite that girl and her boyfriend we met before to drink together?"
"Xida?" V thought for a few seconds, realizing who Jack's vague wording referred to, "Let me see... No need, she posted a picture of her dynamic, currently eating a grand meal carefully prepared by her boyfriend, let's not be tactless and disturb them."
Her fingertips swiped back and forth across the screen; that exquisite photo of a handsome man and a beautiful woman under the night glow was dazzling like the only moon in the night sky, its brilliance overpowering the light of a hundred million stars.
"Why the sudden silence?" Jack found it strange that there was suddenly no sound on the other end of the phone, "Don't tell me you were stimulated by a photo of someone showing off their love? Our cold-faced goddess? Miss V?"
"Shut up!" V said viciously, after confirming the meeting point and time one last time, she ignored Jack's ruthless mockery and decisively hung up the phone.
Just in time, the garage arrived.
V stood on her tiptoes, pulled open the thick door of the Thorton Mackinaw, took off her high heels, reached out with force, and sat herself down into the driver's seat.
"VA-11HALL? A strange name." She murmured softly, started the car, and stepped hard on the accelerator towards the bright moon.
