Chapter 223: The Scholarly Contest, Tongue‑Fighting the Mass of Confucians, Supreme New Learning, Unity of Knowledge and Action
Jixia Academy.
Facing this game of Chess Dao, Gu Jin Nian felt rather helpless.
Some victories seemed unprincipled.
Relying on omens and others' interference was indeed somewhat unsatisfactory.
In fact, losing a round wasn't a big issue.
However, the Chess Dao omens bestowed by the Tree of All Beings were truly terrifying; in the first game, I hadn't sensed anything.
But in the subsequent games, Gu Jin Nian also sensed them; the omens were strong, as if containing some will, so the national masters felt immense pressure.
It was odd, forcing Gu Jin Nian to stay vigilant.
Yet, regarding his own Chess Dao skill, Gu Jin Nian knew his limits; the win was entirely accidental and not entirely honorable.
He was clear about that.
However, counting the Heaven's Mandate seals, he already had six within his body.
The first one.
Three from the Da Xia Dynasty.
One given by Kong Xuan.
And the current one.
In total there are forty‑nine Heaven's Mandate seals; he alone holds six. Ignoring the mysterious Su Huaiyu, he should rank within the top three.
Delving into his inner world via the Tree of All Beings, he checked his ranking and found himself second.
Only behind Su Huaiyu.
And at that moment.
Accompanied by a bell toll.
Everyone's gaze was inevitably drawn there.
"The Gate of Chess Dao has been unlocked."
"Please step forward, everyone."
As the voice rang out,
the crowd hurried toward the interior of Jixia Academy.
Su Wenjing and Duan Kong vanished, apparently to settle a grudge.
Gu Jin Nian was not idle either.
He rushed straight to the central hall.
Inside the central hall, three combat platforms had already been set up, representing the three schools of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism.
The second gate is the Gate of Debate.
As the crowd entered the hall, three figures already stood on the platforms.
The Confucian representative was Zhong Yang, a Great Scholar of today, highly esteemed in the Guanzhong region.
The immortal sect representative was the Dragon Tiger Dao Sect, represented by Yun Shou Dao Ren; the Dragon Tiger Dao Sect is indeed the foremost among immortal sects in the art of debate.
The Buddhist representative was Divine Monk Pudu, one of the four great monks of the Buddhist sect.
All three, regardless of age or reputation, were qualified to stand on the platforms.
With tens of thousands of scholars entering, the central hall was already a sea of people.
Clang.
With another bell toll,
Holy Punishment's Voice also sounded.
"The method of this debate,"
"is Heaven's Mandate."
"The great era will emerge, Heaven's Mandate will manifest, among the three teachings of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, who can receive the Mandate's blessing."
"This shall be the topic."
"The three great powers will debate; anyone with a differing view may take an answer token to respond. At other times, no loud chatter or disruption of the debate order is allowed; violators will be expelled from Jixia Academy."
As the voice rang, a moment later it sparked considerable controversy.
"A topic of Heaven's Mandate? Jixia Academy really sets such questions,"
"With such a sensitive topic, a dispute is inevitable."
"The debate contest is a contest of divine will; now that Heaven's Mandate descends upon Jixia Academy, this debate, in a sense, could tilt future Mandate favor toward the winner."
"Indeed, that possibility exists; Heaven's Mandate has already taken notice of this place. This debate is of great significance—there will be a good show."
Voices rose one after another.
Gu Jin Nian stood at the front of the crowd; he found the debate somewhat interesting, as such disputes could be beneficial to him.
And at that moment,
Divine Monk Pudu's voice rang out.
"Amitabha."
When Divine Monk Pudu spoke, the scene fell silent, and everyone stared at him.
Clearly, Divine Monk Pudu intended to be the first to debate.
That gave him a certain advantage.
"On the Divine Continent, over countless ages since chaos gave rise, sentient beings emerged."
"Millions of years ago, humanity was born, awakening wisdom and understanding myriad principles, yet unaware of good and evil, unable to discern right from wrong."
"The great era has become a sea of suffering; all people drown in it unaware, forming nations, waging endless wars, causing endless anguish to the populace. The masses weep, families are torn apart, wives and children separated, even resorting to cannibalism; the world's suffering is boundless."
Indeed, our Buddhist sect has eighty‑four thousand dharmas, directly pointing to the Great Path of Pure Bliss; everyone recites the Buddhist sutras, takes refuge in the Buddhist sect, obtains the true Buddha seal, transforms the forms of countless heavens and Buddhas, and rescues the world's sentient beings from fire and water.
Our Buddhist sect has eight great precepts, seeking equality for all beings; whether human or demon, it aims to cease killing, for all living things of heaven and earth, seeking the supreme path of Pure Bliss.
Therefore, in this Heaven's Mandate, our Buddhist sect follows Heaven's will and shall grasp the Mandate.
The Universal Salvation Divine Monk spoke, and what he said can be summed up in one sentence: the Buddhist sect greatly aids the world's sentient beings, finds a way of life for all people, and thus can grasp the Mandate.
With those words spoken,
hundreds of monks simultaneously pressed their palms together and uttered a great blessing.
However, such statements were still hard for some to accept, and during this rebuttal one could not act rashly; when it was not one's turn to speak, one could only remain silent.
"Infinite Celestial Venerable."
At that moment, Yun Shou True Immortal of the Dragon Tiger Dao Sect shook his head.
"No, no."
"The Buddhist sect indeed has eighty‑four thousand dharmas, but they cannot compare to the methods of our Daoist sect; the Daoist ways are infinite—between a single flower and a single tree all is dharma, endless dharma, endless Dao."
"In ancient times, humanity stood, giving birth to wisdom; the ancient sages looked up to the firmament, comprehended the Dao of heaven and earth, and realized the solitary Great Way."
"Furthermore, our Daoist sect transmits boundless teachings, establishing schools without distinction of lineage, serving all under heaven, subduing demons, and protecting the Dao for the sentient masses."
"Although the Buddhist sect espouses benevolent thoughts, it still harbors an inability to distinguish good from evil; laying down the slaughtering knife, instantly becoming a Buddha, lightly erasing all past deeds with a single stroke—such so‑called goodness is hypocrisy."
"Our Daoist lineage, up to today, supports the good and eliminates the evil, also universally saves the masses, heals the world, receives heaven's blessings, and opens the divine law of the Great Path."
"This Heaven's Mandate should rightfully belong to the orthodox Daoist sect."
"Because the Great Way is supreme, the Daoist sect follows Heaven's will."
Yun Shou Daoist spoke, expressing his own views and insights.
He believed that the Buddhist dharma, though eighty‑four thousand in number, fails to discern right from wrong and is thus hypocritical; he then demonstrated his own Daoist methods, clarifying right and wrong, seeking the true path, thereby obtaining the Mandate.
Sure enough, as soon as those words were spoken, some immortal sect cultivators clapped their hands in approval.
The Buddhist monks each wore slightly displeased expressions, yet the Universal Salvation Divine Monk remained utterly calm; such a scene was not new to him, and he felt nothing.
Moreover, a rebuttal is inherently a mutual attack.
It involves pointing out the opponent's flaws and then emphasizing one's own strengths; that is the core of a rebuttal.
After the Daoist sect finished speaking,
in the end only Mr. Zhong Yang remained.
Mr. Zhong Yang fell silent for a moment, then began to speak.
"Humanity has birthed wisdom since antiquity."
"To this day, having attained wisdom, one comprehends principles, understands the myriad phenomena of the universe, and discerns the good and evil of human nature."
"The Buddhist sect has eighty‑four thousand dharmas, the Daoist sect has boundless dharmas, and our Confucian‑Daoist path also possesses infinite learning."
"Confucius came first, establishing rites and laws to differentiate people."
"The Lesser Sage followed, instituting state laws for balance."
"The Restored Sage also existed, setting monarchic law and establishing the court."
"Heaven's Mandate sages established Confucianism to stabilize the world."
"Now, within the Confucian‑Daoist tradition, there are later generations who set hearts for heaven and earth, establish destiny for the people, inherit the lost teachings of ancient sages, and usher in peace for all ages."
"The ancient virtuous are like light, illuminating the path for later generations; the Confucian way of law encourages the gentleman to continuously strengthen himself, thus perpetuating endless vitality."
"The Confucian classics open the mind, clarify principles, enable discrimination of good and evil, and help understand all worldly troubles."
"The Dao is infinite."
"Buddhism is profound."
"Yet, we scholars are boundlessly endless, directly pointing to the Heaven‑piercing Great Way; this Heaven's Mandate should belong to our Confucian‑Daoist path."
"Thus we can educate all peoples; we can both universally save the masses and follow Heaven's will."
Mr. Zhong Yang spoke.
His words were not sharp, yet they were exceedingly perfect; the Buddhist sect believes it can universally save all beings, leading people to the Pure Bliss world where all are equal.
The Daoist sect holds that it can discern good and evil, clarify right and wrong, comprehend the Great Way, directly target the core, transcend tribulations and ascend, enjoy carefree freedom, and boundless happiness.
But now, Mr. Zhong Yang directly summarized the meaning of the two teachings: study is the foundation of all, awakening human wisdom, realizing the celestial Dao, and entering the realm of Pure Bliss.
Such remarks even Gu Jin Nian could not help but repeatedly praise.
"Good."
"These words are truly well‑said."
"Mr. Zhong Yang indeed lives up to being a great Confucian‑Daoist; his words are truly excellent."
In an instant, countless voices rose; those who came to the Jixia Academy were already many scholars, naturally leaning toward the scholars.
All three expounded their statements; for now it seems Mr. Zhong Yang truly spoke very well.
However, this is only the beginning; the real rebuttal has yet to start.
"Amitabha."
"Mr. Zhong Yang, you are mistaken; the Confucian‑Daoist line indeed enlightens people, but such wisdom is not mere intellect. Throughout history, have there not been many scholars who have brought disaster to the nation and suffering to the people?"
"The world's dynasties, aristocratic cliques, academic factions tightly control power; can a destitute commoner who studies ten hard years ever compare to one's birth?"
"Fifty years ago, a poor monk roamed the four seas and met a humble disciple who studied diligently, showed decent talent, and went to the capital for the imperial exams."
"However, after traveling and returning, I learned that this person failed the exams three times and then committed suicide at home."
"It was not a lack of writing nor talent, but his impoverished background; although he had read the Four Books and Five Classics, he did not understand court policies or national affairs. No matter how good the texts, how could such a poor origin make him succeed?"
"This poor monk dares to ask the scholars present, what are your family circumstances?"
"Are there any among you from impoverished families?"
The Universal Salvation Divine Monk spoke, looking at all the scholars present.
As those words were spoken, the scholars fell silent.
Those who can come to the Jixia Academy cannot be low‑born youths, right? Seeing the crowd silent, the Universal Salvation Divine Monk continued.
"What does equality of all sentient beings mean?"
"This is equality of all sentient beings."
"The way of the Buddhist sect is the way of salvation."
The Universal Salvation Divine Monk spoke, and when he reached this point, he clasped his hands together, truly leaving all the scholars at a loss for words.
The crowd remained silent.
This was the second round; aside from Mr. Zhongyang and Daoist Yunshou, who could not answer, the onlookers were permitted to speak.
At that moment, a voice sounded.
"The Buddhist sect claims equality, yet reveres the Buddha. If true equality existed, why revere the Buddha?"
"Everyone is a Buddha; where does the notion of a Buddha Ancestor come from?"
"Why do people worship the Buddha?"
The voice sounded again.
It was Chang Yun Tian's voice; he immediately seized the flaw and attacked the opponent's claim of equality of all sentient beings.
The remark instantly drew countless cheers.
However, the Universal Salvation Divine Monk couldn't help but smile faintly and say,
"Wrong."
"The Buddha has no form; worshiping the Buddha is worshiping oneself. Everyone possesses the Tathagata's virtue, everyone can become a Buddha, and although sentient beings have myriad appearances, they are equally so."
The Universal Salvation Divine Monk, well‑versed in Buddhist doctrine, answered this simple question with ease.
Indeed.
When this answer was spoken, the assembled crowd fell silent again.
The Universal Salvation Divine Monk's reply was flawless.
Only,
In an instant, many eyes fell on Gu Jin Nian; they truly did not understand the Buddhist teachings.
For Chang Yun Tian to raise this question was already commendable.
But to truly debate the opponent would be as hard as scaling the heavens.
In this situation, the crowd naturally placed their hopes on Gu Jin Nian, hoping he could provide an answer.
Feeling the gazes, Gu Jin Nian appeared very composed.
Gu Jin Nian had studied Buddhist doctrine, and because he bore a grudge against the Buddhist sect, he had naturally spent some time researching its teachings.
The Buddhist sect excels at sophistry, and any sect, when idle, likes to justify its own arguments—pulling out scriptures, picking sharp questions, and then self‑justifying.
Thus, if a sect can endure for thousands of years, its logical consistency becomes terrifyingly formidable.
Because it has ten thousand ways to interpret and expound its theory.
Moreover, what is good or bad is decided by it.
In his previous life, Gu Jin Nian had read a book that mentioned Buddhist debate, and the author believed that
to achieve debate through words is almost impossible; even Qiong Qi could not accomplish it in a lifetime.
The scriptural principles refined over thousands of years by millions, even tens of millions of people—can a single individual defeat them?
To truly overcome them, there is only one method.
People.
Indeed, scriptures are dead, people are alive; anyone's exposition of any scriptural principle is merely what they think or understand, and one should not question the correctness of the scriptures.
Targeting people is the only chance to win.
That is why, when Gu Jin Nian previously fought the Buddhist sect, he was never at a disadvantage.
With this in mind, Gu Jin Nian looked up.
Staring at the Universal Salvation Divine Monk.
Then he took a step forward.
"May I ask the Divine Monk a question?"
"The Buddhist sect has 84,400 dharmas and a million scriptures; with so many scriptures, could any be erroneous?"
Gu Jin Nian spoke, questioning the Universal Salvation Divine Monk.
Upon hearing this, the Universal Salvation Divine Monk replied without hesitation,
"The 84,400 dharmas of the Buddhist sect were created by our Buddha, and the million scriptures were all authored by the Buddha; none are erroneous."
The Universal Salvation Divine Monk spoke; he naturally had to claim they were correct, lest he tarnish himself.
"The scriptures are without error."
"Does this prove that the Buddha is omnipotent, that the Buddha knows past and future, understands the Dao of heaven and earth, and never errs, right?"
Gu Jin Nian continued to ask.
It only further aroused curiosity.
Because even those who do not understand Buddhist doctrine know a thing or two about this.
The Buddha, being the supreme being, is naturally omnipotent and cannot err, but this is like asking whether a sage can err; Confucian scholars would say no.
"Exactly."
"Benefactor, you have good insight."
"You have affinity with my Buddhist sect."
The latter spoke softly, even adding the line, "You have affinity with my Buddhist sect."
Upon hearing that, Gu Jin Nian was not convinced; instead, his eyes burned like torches as he stared at the Universal Salvation Divine Monk.
"You are wrong."
Gu Jin Nian's gaze was steadfast as he looked at the Universal Salvation Divine Monk and said.
As Gu Jin Nian's voice rang out, the crowd furrowed their brows.
They didn't quite understand what Gu Jin Nian meant. "Where am I at fault?"
The Bodhisattva Divine Monk was also puzzled; he didn't understand what Gu Jin Nian meant.
"I say you are wrong."
"You are then wrong."
Gu Jin Nian opened his mouth, appearing calm.
But these words seemed especially inexplicable.
How could something be so plainly wrong? And he doesn't even explain where the mistake lies?
"Lord Hou truly is exceptional, but alas this is not the Da Xia Dynasty. If Lord Hou has a different view, just speak it."
"Such domineering—what is its meaning?"
The Universal Salvation Divine Monk responded calmly, without confronting Gu Jin Nian head‑on.
"Could it be that the Master does not know where he is at fault?"
Gu Jin Nian stood with his hands behind his back, gazing at the Universal Salvation Divine Monk with a light smile, saying.
Upon hearing this, the Universal Salvation Divine Monk couldn't help but frown.
"What fault does the humble monk have?"
"The Buddha is inherently all‑powerful, knows all dharmas, comprehends past and future, and for all beings of the world points out the way of continual life."
"Lord Hou says the humble monk is wrong; he should present evidence."
The Universal Salvation Divine Monk spoke; he did not feel he was at fault.
The Buddha truly is all‑powerful; that is their doctrine.
"You are indeed wrong."
At that moment, Mr. Zhong Yang gave a slight smile, looked at the Universal Salvation Divine Monk, and said.
This time, even more people did not understand.
The Universal Salvation Divine Monk knit his brows, looking toward Mr. Zhong Yang.
The latter responded calmly, speaking slowly.
"Jin Nian's words are not aimed at the Buddha's omnipotence, but at the equality of all beings, each possessing the Buddha's virtue."
He spoke, stating the core.
In an instant, many were shocked, and the Universal Salvation Divine Monk's complexion changed on the spot.
For a moment, he fell silent.
"Impressive."
"Truly impressive."
"What a fine koan."
At that moment, someone exclaimed, unable to restrain themselves from clapping in admiration.
"What on earth is going on?"
"How can I not understand at all?"
"Sir, where is this koan?"
Someone was delighted, unable to help but praise Gu Jin Nian's wisdom, yet most still did not grasp it; they truly could not discern where the meaning lay.
"You are all wrong."
"Gu Jin Nian is not targeting the Buddha's omnipotence, but the Universal Salvation Divine Monk's initial words."
"The Universal Salvation Divine Monk said that all beings are equal, each bearing the Tathagata's aspect, implying that all beings are Buddha."
"Since all beings are Buddha, I am also Buddha, and he is also Buddha."
"Gu Jin Nian asked whether the Buddha is all‑powerful, knows past and future, and never makes mistakes?"
"The Universal Salvation Divine Monk affirmed this statement."
"If that is so, Gu Jin Nian considers himself Buddha; if he is Buddha, then saying the Universal Salvation Divine Monk is wrong makes the monk wrong."
"Because the Buddha is all‑powerful, yet the Universal Salvation Divine Monk did not grasp this koan and instead called Gu Jin Nian overbearing."
"This overturns his own words, proving the Buddha is not all‑powerful."
"Now before the Universal Salvation Divine Monk, there are only two paths to take."
"First, to admit one's mistake, which means losing the debate; however, the benefit is that the Buddha still exists, defending the Buddhist doctrine."
"Second, to refuse to admit fault, which would imply that the Buddha is not all‑powerful, because the Buddha made a mistake."
"How marvelous, how marvelous."
"What a fine koan, truly a fine koan."
The elder spoke, perceiving the brilliance of this debate.
And after the crowd heard this explanation, each was deeply shocked.
Such thinking is something they could never have imagined.
It is overly profound, and the trap set is extremely terrifying, because before the Universal Salvation Divine Monk, there are only two paths.
Either admit one's own mistake, or admit that the Buddha is at fault.
Anyone with a bit of sense would not dare say the Buddha is wrong, but if one admits one's own fault, this method of debate would mean the Buddhist sect is defeated, almost without solution.
On the training arena.
The Pu Du Divine Monk's expression was grim; he hadn't expected Gu Jin Nian to dig such a huge pit for himself.
Indeed, he was in a dilemma.
He even said that with no way forward, he could only admit his mistake; if he dared claim that the Buddha was wrong, that would violate doctrine and cause even greater trouble.
As one of the Four Great Divine Monks, admitting that the Buddha erred would spread and have terrifying repercussions; thus there is no second path, only one: acknowledge his own fault.
"Amitabha."
"Although all sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature, Gu, where does your Buddha-nature come from?"
"Believing in the Buddha does not mean one instantly becomes a Buddha."
"Therefore, the donor is not a Buddha and cannot define right or wrong."
At that moment, a monk spoke, looked at Gu Jin Nian, gave this answer, and thus helped the Pu Du Divine Monk resolve the sharp question.
When the words were finished, the monks' eyes all lit up.
Even the Pu Du Divine Monk couldn't help but clasp his hands and utter "Amitabha."
Indeed.
Gu Jin Nian, on what basis do you claim you are a Buddha?
Although sentient beings have Buddha-nature, and the Buddhist canon contains eighty‑four thousand scriptures stating anyone can become a Buddha, attaining Buddhahood requires time and cultivation; you have no cultivation, so you are not a Buddha, and thus cannot define right or wrong.
Hearing this, Gu Jin Nian was not surprised at all; on the contrary, the other's words were exactly what Gu Jin Nian expected.
Facing such a rebuttal.
Normally one would flaunt one's achievements, but Gu Jin Nian would not say that; saying so would inevitably be lowly.
After all, no matter how many achievements you have, can they surpass a fictional Buddha? That Buddha, according to the scriptures, is said to have endured millions of kalpas of tribulation.
Therefore, Gu Jin Nian slowly spoke.
"The Buddha says, 'Lay down the butcher's knife and become a Buddha on the spot.'"
"Right or wrong?"
Gu Jin Nian opened his mouth and asked again.
The other fell silent, not knowing what to say for a moment.
The answer was obviously correct, but he also feared Gu Jin Nian might be setting a trap.
After waiting a while, he could only force himself to answer.
"Yes."
This is still Buddhist doctrine, undeniable.
"If I lay down the butcher's knife, does that make me a Buddha?"
Gu Jin Nian asked.
"Yes."
The other nodded.
But soon, he continued.
"Amitabha."
"But the donor has no butcher's knife."
The monk said, trying to block Gu Jin Nian's path outright.
"Is attachment a knife?"
Gu Jin Nian asked lightly.
"Yes."
The monk was a bit nervous, but still nodded; attachment as a knife remains Buddhist doctrine.
"Good."
"I have let go."
Gu Jin Nian smiled.
This time the crowd was a bit confused, feeling it seemed like a verbal spar, yet also a dialectical exchange.
Every word contained reasoning.
"How did you let go?"
The monk continued to ask.
He looked at Gu Jin Nian.
But Gu Jin Nian gave no answer, instead turning his gaze elsewhere, ignoring the other.
The scene became a bit awkward.
The monk couldn't help but ask again.
"Where is the butcher's knife?"
"I, the junior monk, have not seen it."
He kept speaking, pressing Gu Jin Nian.
However.
At this moment, on the training stage, the Pu Du Divine Monk forced a bitter smile.
"Amitabha."
"It is my fault, poor monk."
"Gu donor, truly unparalleled wisdom."
At that moment, the Pu Du Divine Monk saw the Zen meaning, smiled bitterly, clasped his hands, bowed to Gu Jin Nian, and voluntarily conceded defeat.
"What is going on?"
"So you admit defeat?"
"I completely don't understand."
"Is there any senior who can come forward and explain?"
The crowd was astonished, truly not knowing what was happening; originally this young monk had come out, refuted Gu Jin Nian, and held the advantage—how did the Universal Salvation Divine Monk then voluntarily admit error?
Isn't this just too bizarre? The crowd couldn't comprehend it at all.
"Impressive."
"This Zen insight is truly exquisite beyond compare."
"Haven't you all understood yet?"
An old man spoke up, praising Gu Jin Nian.
"I humbly request the gentleman to clarify."
Upon hearing someone speak that way, some students immediately voiced questions to the other party.
"This young monk refutes Gu Jin Nian: although all sentient beings possess the Tathāgata aspect, not everyone is a Buddha; rather, everyone has the opportunity to become a Buddha."
"In other words, Gu Jin Nian is not yet a Buddha; if Gu Jin Nian is not a Buddha, then right and wrong cannot be defined for him."
"This question and refutation defused Gu Jin Nian's attack."
"However, Gu Jin Nian answered using Buddhist doctrine—laying down the slaughtering knife and instantly attaining Buddhahood—but at that moment, Gu Jin Nian set another trap again."
"He asked the monk, is this statement correct?"
"The monk answered 'yes', because it is Buddhist doctrine and cannot be said to be incorrect; then Gu Jin Nian asked, if attachment is a knife, and he puts down attachment, does he become a Buddha?"
"The monk answered 'yes'."
"Then the brilliant part came: Gu Jin Nian directly said 'let go', and those three words are the essence within the essence."
"The monk did not grasp the Zen insight, continuously asking Gu Jin Nian how he let go, in what manner; at that moment his attachment resurfaced, while Gu Jin Nian remained silent, because he had already let go of attachment."
"At that moment, he is a Buddha."
"Thus the Universal Salvation Divine Monk finally conceded defeat."
"Do you understand?"
The old man spoke, answering this Zen insight.
After hearing, the crowd couldn't help but have an epiphany; this truly is a method of dialectical insight, so profound that, to be honest, even if they were taken up, they probably still wouldn't grasp its meaning.
"That's not right."
"If that's the case, Gu Jin Nian said he let go and then remained silent; at this moment, the monk also stays silent—does that resolve Gu Jin Nian's attack?"
Someone spoke up, sounding slightly curious.
"No."
"I just said, the truly exquisite part is those three words."
"Let go."
"Gu Jin Nian let go of attachment; he neither quarreled nor argued with the other side, thus becoming a Buddha. After becoming a Buddha, what Gu Jin Nian says cannot be wrong, because a Buddha knows past and future."
"The sutras say that the Buddha's past deeds are never erroneous; all are predestined."
"In other words, the moment Gu Jin Nian attains Buddhahood, whatever he said in the past or will say in the future is all reasonable and all correct."
"If the monk does not continue to probe, that is also wrong."
"Probing further is even more wrong."
"Each link connects to the next, upper and lower combine; such intellect is terrifyingly dreadful."
The old man spoke again, explaining more meticulously.
Such an explanation left everyone speechless.
They can be considered to have understood.
From the start, Gu Jin Nian had set the trap, using doctrine as the snare, luring the enemy step by step into the scheme.
"It seems that in the future, if one argues with Gu Jin Nian, one really must think twice before acting."
"Honestly, with such intellect, I feel I can't last even one round against Gu Jin Nian."
"The Buddhist school excels at clever debate; I didn't expect to be beaten by Gu Jin Nian like this?"
People discussed, praising Gu Jin Nian's intellect.
And at this moment.
The Universal Salvation Divine Monk left, taking his disciples, his face pallid as he departed.
Their proudest rebuttal had already lost, and lost thoroughly.
Now, on the training arena, only the Daoist Sect and the Confucian School remain.
Seeing the voluntarily conceding Universal Salvation Divine Monk, Yun Shou Daoist felt great joy; his greatest rival had left, how could he not be pleased?
"The goodness of Buddhist law is not the greatest good."
"The Daoist Sect's teachings reflect myriad laws for countless people: cultivating oneself, healing the world, subduing demons, discerning good and evil."
"This is Heaven's Mandate's choice."
Yun Shou Daoist spoke, once again emphasizing his own doctrine.
However, faced with the debate, Gu Jin Nian chose not to argue anything, but stepped back a few paces, watching quietly.
Thus.
Yun Shou Daoist and the Great Scholar of Zhongyang kept debating.
Later, all sides also engaged in debate.
Both sides each held a point, both had reason.
Gu Jin Nian listened attentively; where recognition was due, he naturally acknowledged it; where it was not, he would remember it but would not refute anything.
Regarding the Buddhist sect, it's entirely because of a prior grudge; to put it bluntly, it's a targeted attack.
Time passes bit by bit.
For a full half‑day, both sides gradually grew heated, and the points of contention became increasingly sharp.
In short, the Zhongyang Great Scholar holds that Confucian‑Daoist teachings can awaken intelligence and illuminate all things; whether one cultivates the Immortal Path or the Buddhist sect, one must pass through this way, which is the origin of everything and the foundation of humanity.
Yunshou Daoist believes that the Immortal Path can break the shackles of the spirit, transcend above, grant endless longevity, and allow one to enjoy supreme bliss and carefree freedom.
The two argue vigorously on principle.
Gu Jin Nian is pondering the topic of Heaven's Mandate affiliation.
Until the very end.
Neither manages to produce a definitive reason; such a debate itself requires a long time, and frankly, how many people today can persuade the other's view? Moreover, both sides present valid arguments, making it even harder to decide.
Most debates, if not decided by votes, can essentially be argued for a lifetime without much issue.
Thus, this debate continued until night fell.
Finally, someone from the Jixia Academy stepped forward.
Clang.
The bell rang.
The Great Scholar inside the Academy spoke.
"This debate yields no conclusion."
"All the students may articulate their own viewpoints."
At this moment, the Great Scholar's voice rang out.
Since Yunshou Daoist and the Zhongyang Great Scholar cannot reach a reason, let the present students debate.
Of course, even if a student wins, Yunshou Daoist and the Zhongyang Great Scholar must still refute it; unless they can be persuaded, it remains useless.
"The students believe that the Confucian‑Daoist path should receive Heaven's Mandate; it educates the masses and thus deserves the Mandate."
Immediately, a scholar spoke up, naturally supporting the Confucian‑Daoist at this moment.
"What a joke."
"Our Daoist sect can also educate the masses; moreover, the Confucian‑Daoist lineage is studied from childhood, and by twenty‑or‑thirty one has only just entered the path."
"Through the imperial examinations, one becomes an official, benefits a region; at least before the bewildered age, forty years lie ahead—can the world's people wait forty years?"
"Moreover, after forty years a person is aged; at seventy or eighty, half the body returns to dust. Not to mention whether one can achieve great enlightenment— even if a Great Scholar attains it, what then? After another half‑century, one must depart this world."
"What can be passed on? What blessings can be given to the world's people?"
"As for the Immortal Path, everyone cultivates, attaining longevity, immortality, a thousand‑year endurance; after five hundred years of arduous practice, one can relieve suffering, subdue demons, and a Golden Core cultivator can benefit the masses for five hundred years."
"Can you achieve that?"
At this point, a Daoist practitioner spoke up, using this as a comparison.
The Confucian‑Daoist scholars, however, were at a loss for words one by one.
"Lord Hou, could you say a few words?"
"Lord Gu, these practitioners are spouting twisted arguments here; could you say a few words?"
At this moment, everyone turned their gaze toward Gu Jin Nian.
Unable to resolve the issue, they could only turn to Gu Jin Nian.
Hearing this, Gu Jin Nian gave a wry smile.
His purpose in coming to the Jixia Academy this time was simply to learn more, not to show off.
Including the initial Chess Path, he truly didn't aim to win; even the Buddhist sect's debate, had there not been a grudge, Gu Jin Nian wouldn't have stepped forward.
Now he listened to the audience's request.
Gu Jin Nian shook his head and said.
"In fact, whether it's the Confucian‑Daoist, the Immortal Path, or Buddhist cultivation,"
"I, Gu, think that all are difficult to obtain Heaven's Mandate affiliation."
Gu Jin Nian spoke, voicing his thoughts.
His voice fell.
It instantly sparked controversy.
Even the Zhongyang Great Scholar and Yunshou Daoist couldn't help but look at Gu Jin Nian.
They were actually waiting for Gu Jin Nian's remarks.
They didn't expect Gu Jin Nian to say this: "If it's not Confucian, Buddhist, or Daoist, could it be the path of demons and monsters?"
Yunshou Daoist's voice rang out, tinged with slight displeasure.
"The Way of the Dynasty."
Listening to Yunshou Daoist, Gu Jin Nian remained calm and expressed his idea.
"What is the Way of the Dynasty?"
The Zhongyang Great Scholar asked Gu Jin Nian.
"Govern the state by law; under the law, all are equal."
"Govern the state by rites; ideas are supreme. One can study to teach the masses, cultivate the Immortal Path to subdue demons, recite sutras for blessings, and also live a simple life for all beings—working the fields at sunrise, returning at sunset, with plain tea and modest meals."
Gu Jin Nian replied.
"Could you be more specific?"
The Zhongyang Great Scholar continued to ask.
"Standardize script, unify tracks, harmonize measures, achieve great unification of heaven and earth."
"There shall be no distinction of academic lineage."
No one is born lofty above others.
Under the law, all beings are equal.
Under rites and law, virtue shapes one.
This is the Way of the dynasty, encompassing all ways.
Whether immortal or Buddha, all laws are nurtured within, all things change, life perpetuates, the dynasty remains immortal, lasting ten thousand generations without extinction.
Gu Jin Nian gave a reply.
All things, in fact, prioritize profit, but Gu Jin Nian's thought is selfless, uniting the four seas, achieving universal unity, a time without disaster or war.
Standardized script, unified tracks.
The people live peacefully and work happily; those with ambition strive, those without simply live as ordinary citizens.
Three meals a day, well fed and quenched, not scrambling for livelihood, not fretting over a few ounces of broken silver.
This truly aligns with Heaven's Mandate.
Although, this cannot be achieved.
But at least it is a direction.
"Good."
Upon hearing this, the Zhongyang Great Scholar praised loudly.
He is a representative of Confucianism and Daoism, yet after Gu Jin Nian spoke such words, he could not help but clap and exclaim in admiration.
"Standardized script, unified tracks."
"I, old man, admire such aspirations."
"Compared with Lord Gu, I am like a frog at the bottom of a well, truly laughable."
"I concede defeat."
At this moment, the Zhongyang Great Scholar spoke, bowing to Gu Jin Nian.
In terms of thought, Gu Jin Nian's ideas far surpass his; the Zhongyang Great Scholar kept saying it was all for Confucianism and Daoism, with scholars as the goal.
Gu Jin Nian's goal, however, is all people under heaven, and he has a direction to pursue.
As long as one keeps striving, someday it may happen.
Watching the Zhongyang Great Scholar concede.
Yun Shou Daoist frowned slightly, because Gu Jin Nian spoke so well that this aspiration left him at a loss for words.
Yet to simply concede himself.
He felt somewhat unwilling.
"Fellow Daoist's words are indeed good."
"But the fellow's words also seem vague and ethereal; since there are people, how can they not be divided into ranks?"
"The dynasty's unification depends entirely on the emperor; with a wise ruler, the dynasty thrives, with a tyrant, the people suffer."
Yun Shou Daoist spoke.
He pointed the discussion toward the emperor.
The topic was sharp; everyone could discern its meaning.
One must not answer recklessly.
Otherwise, it would not be a good thing for Gu Jin Nian.
"Cultivating immortality, is it not also elusive?"
"Moreover, throughout history, how many truly become immortal?"
"Even if one becomes immortal, transcends tribulations, and goes to another world, how can one benefit all living beings?"
"Gu's ambition is indeed elusive, but I will pursue it."
"Today I advance one step, tomorrow another; perhaps one day I will fall, but every step paves the way for future scholars."
"Someday."
"This road will be completed."
"No matter how elusive, the road is at least beneath Gu's feet."
Gu Jin Nian spoke.
He voiced his ideals and his resolve.
"Well said."
"The road is at one's feet, what a fine saying, 'the road is at one's feet'."
"No wonder Lord Gu was praised by Confucius as a saint for future generations."
"Such aspirations, such will, truly embarrass me beyond words."
"Paving the way for future people."
"Truly well spoken."
Tens of thousands of scholars praised, and several Great Scholars nodded repeatedly, sincerely feeling Gu Jin Nian's words were superb.
Facing Gu Jin Nian's resolve, Yun Shou Daoist finally sighed.
He did not expect Gu Jin Nian to have such determination and ambition.
In this debate, he did not lose—indeed, he did not lose—but Gu Jin Nian truly won.
Clang.
The bell rang again.
At this moment, cheers erupted.
However, everyone's anticipation grew stronger, for the third stage was the scholarly contest—the main event.
You look, Heaven's Mandate ancient star has changed.
Someone suddenly exclaimed, pointing at the situation above the heavens, speaking excitedly.
As these words were spoken, everyone looked up toward the heavens.
Indeed.
The ancient star trembled, gathering terrifying light; the original Heaven's Mandate ancient star, when standing on the ground, could not be seen clearly, but now it is extraordinarily red, inexplicably making people feel fearful.
This is very strange, also leaving people unsure what to say.
Looks like, Heaven's Mandate will soon descend upon this great age.
Yes, very possible.
When Heaven's Mandate descends, the great age's conflict will begin; we don't know if it's blessing or calamity.
The scholars were discussing.
And just at this moment.
Inside the Jixia Academy.
Another bell rang.
Third level.
Academic contest.
Please, everyone, proceed to the rear hall.
As this voice sounded.
Everyone withdrew their gazes, one by one walking toward the rear hall.
Gu Jin Nian also stepped forward.
However, just then, a figure appeared beside Gu Jin Nian.
It was Su Wenjing's figure.
Jin Nian.
Are you truly not confident?
Su Wenjing appeared again, his eyes full of curiosity.
Yes.
Gu Jin Nian nodded; regarding the unity of knowledge and action, he still had not fully comprehended, nor did he dare to utter harsh words.
Alas.
Hearing this, Su Wenjing felt somewhat helpless, but not knowing what to say, he could only let out a long sigh.
Sir, upon returning, did you win?
Gu Jin Nian did not dwell on academics, but asked Su Wenjing whether, upon returning at this time, he had won.
Did not win.
But neither did he lose badly.
Jin Nian, no matter what happens later, you must not say anything; I am here.
Su Wenjing spoke, patting Gu Jin Nian's shoulder.
The momentum has already been built.
If Gu Jin Nian later voluntarily explains that he has not yet grasped New Learning, that would not be good for him.
In his view, Gu Jin Nian should walk an invincible path.
All the way, singing triumphantly.
Now, in academia, it has been interrupted.
This is not a good thing.
Perhaps Gu Jin Nian does not mind, but for the state of the world, it is not a good thing.
Especially as Heaven's Mandate is about to descend.
The expectation of scholars worldwide for Gu Jin Nian is also a kind of Heaven's Mandate; if Gu Jin Nian openly admits he cannot, it will indeed bring some bad things.
Sir.
Some things.
There's no need to hide them.
I have my own thoughts.
Hearing Su Wenjing say this, Gu Jin Nian shook his head; he knew Su Wenjing meant well, but he knew even more that...
He must begin to face himself.
Especially, he must come into contact with the sage's way.
Hearing this, Su Wenjing was startled, but after thinking, he finally nodded, saying nothing more.
Thus.
Everyone arrived at the rear hall.
In the rear hall of the Jixia Academy.
There is only one martial arts platform.
On the martial arts platform.
More than twenty people were already seated.
The Seven Sages of Zhushan, the Great Scholars of various states, each with their own learning, are here today, waiting for Gu Jin Nian's arrival.
When Gu Jin Nian appeared before everyone's eyes.
In an instant, the atmosphere of the entire venue changed.
Everyone's gaze involuntarily fell upon Gu Jin Nian.
Before, Su Wenjing had said that Gu Jin Nian would bring the supreme New Learning.
Thus, everyone at the Jixia Academy was watching Gu Jin Nian, and any differing voice would be suppressed.
They did not dislike Gu Jin Nian.
Rather, this atmosphere made them feel very displeased, although they dared not guarantee whether Gu Jin Nian had actually brought the supreme New Learning.
But no matter what, raising objections invited criticism—how could this not make people resentful?
Naturally, they directed this dissatisfaction toward Gu Jin Nian.
Of course, they would not actively criticize Gu Jin Nian; instead, they waited for him to speak of the New Learning.
If any problem were found, they would criticize it without mercy.
Soon.
Ten thousand people gathered, and everyone's expression was filled with anticipation.
Waiting for Gu Jin Nian's New Learning.
How it would shock this world, and how it would overturn Confucian Dao.
At this very moment, even the dean of the Jixia Academy appeared, standing to the side, seemingly not wanting to miss this academic debate.
After all, it is the supreme New Learning.
It is utterly captivating.
"I have heard that the sage of later generations has already comprehended the supreme New Learning."
"Please, Lord Gu, ascend the stage and let us hear a bit—what is the supreme New Learning?"
Just then.
A voice sounded.
This is the Great Scholar of the Xiongnu State.
He is quite direct; since it is an academic debate, there is no need to beat around the bush—let Gu Jin Nian come up.
As the voice sounded.
Everyone involuntarily turned their gaze toward Gu Jin Nian.
All gazes.
Gathered upon Gu Jin Nian.
Ninety percent was anticipation, with ten percent curiosity.
After all that talk, whether there truly is a supreme New Learning remains unknown.
Feeling everyone's gaze, Gu Jin Nian appeared remarkably calm as he spoke.
"I have a New Learning."
"But I have not yet fully comprehended it."
"I need time to understand it, so I can organize it."
Gu Jin Nian spoke, being direct and frank in explaining the situation.
But as soon as he said that,
the scene instantly boiled over.
"Not fully comprehended?"
"Wasn't it said that he had already comprehended it?"
"In other words, we won't hear the supreme New Learning today?"
"What is going on?"
"Wasn't it said that Gu Jin Nian would bring the supreme New Learning?"
The crowd utterly did not know what to say, having thought Gu Jin Nian had come bearing the supreme New Learning.
Yet no one expected that Gu Jin Nian had not yet comprehended this heart learning—indeed, it is somewhat disappointing.
In the crowd, Chang Yun Tian, upon hearing this, involuntarily let out a long sigh.
He felt great joy in his heart.
He could not help but clench his fists.
He had guessed correctly.
Gu Jin Nian could not possibly comprehend the supreme New Learning.
"How much time is needed?"
"Is three days enough?"
"Surely not—are you going to keep delaying another half year for him?"
Just then, the voice of the Great Scholar of the Xiongnu State sounded again.
He was somewhat doubtful, frowning, with a tone that was not friendly.
Originally he felt some displeasure at the Jixia Academy's delay of half a year, but given the heavenly disasters in Da Xia at the time, and the fact that Gu Jin Nian indeed had talent, most people still hoped that Confucian Dao would produce an unparalleled genius.
To create a New Learning and lead a new Confucian learning.
So he had nothing to say, but later, upon arriving at the Jixia Academy, Su Wenjing led the praise of Gu Jin Nian, causing countless people to join in lauding him—anyone who dared to question would be attacked.
He was one of those who raised such doubts, and as a result he was utterly battered.
Now that Gu Jin Nian says there is no New Learning, he naturally cannot help but speak; whether he carries national grudge is unclear, but he certainly bears a personal grudge.
Upon hearing this, Gu Jin Nian involuntarily furrowed his brow slightly, raised his head, and looked at the Great Scholar of the Xiongnu State.
"The very notion of New Learning requires prolonged deliberation; if I do not understand it, how could I possibly reveal it to the world?"
"Furthermore, if Gu Mou cannot produce a New Learning, is that wrong?"
"Could it be that you claim to possess the supreme New Learning?"
Gu Jin Nian opened his mouth: other nations' Great Scholars may say something, but the Great Scholar of the Xiongnu Nation dares to bluster before me?
"I, of course, have no supreme New Learning."
"Yet some say you do."
"Mr. Su Wenjing has come from the Jixia Academy, praising you to the heavens, claiming you have founded the supreme New Learning."
"To shake the world within the academy."
"Anyone who dares to raise a doubt will be attacked until their body is left without a single intact spot."
"Now you cannot speak it, and you still refuse to let me say a few words?"
"How domineering."
The latter clearly feared not Gu Jin Nian; he is a Great Scholar of the Xiongnu Nation, not a scholar of Da Xia, and the two have long been rivals, plus he also dislikes Gu Jin Nian.
Speak up directly—what can he do?
Could it be that he hides it? Or perhaps he is being cryptic?
That's unnecessary; better be straightforward.
Hearing this, Su Wenjing's voice rose.
"I was a bit reckless."
"I apologize to everyone."
"I have misunderstood."
At this point, Su Wenjing could only step forward and apologize to the crowd.
He naturally hoped Gu Jin Nian could found the supreme New Learning, but Su Wenjing gradually realized something.
That is, Gu Jin Nian is not a god; he had been forcing things prematurely, which is not good and burdens Gu Jin Nian.
Su Wenjing's apology.
Left the crowd in a hush.
They did not wish for this outcome; in their eyes, Su Wenjing's apology held little meaning.
"If that is so."
"From now on, I hope Mr. Su Wenjing will not create false hype."
"As a Half Saint, why endure this?"
At this moment, the Great Scholar of the Fuyu Dynasty also spoke, not as vehement as the Xiongnu Nation's Great Scholar, yet still somewhat displeased.
"Alas."
"I indeed look forward to the supreme New Learning."
"It seems I have thought too much."
Another Great Scholar spoke, behaving quite normally, without blaming anyone, only feeling regret.
"Supreme New Learning—how could it be so easy?"
"The seven of us have spent half our lives studying diligently, yet we cannot produce even one or two."
"It is not that we think Gu Jin Nian is unworthy; rather, the supreme New Learning itself requires a certain insight before one can articulate it."
"This is neither a Daoist scripture nor a Buddhist sutra."
"Confucian‑Daoist New Learning cannot be so simple; if Gu Jin Nian truly presented the supreme New Learning today, I would doubt it."
"Nevertheless, Gu Jin Nian, you are commendable, knowing when to retreat."
"A youth worthy of teaching."
At this moment, the Seven Sages of Zhu Shan spoke, yet their words sounded rather odd.
No hostility.
But it still felt strange.
"Enough."
"Since there is no New Learning."
"We shall begin then."
The Great Scholar of the Xiongnu Nation spoke, not bothering to engage, but instead expounding their scholarship.
Below the Martial Arts Stage.
Gu Jin Nian quietly watched it all.
He did not argue anything.
Nor did he quarrel.
It was unnecessary.
Only, the gazes of the crowd grew increasingly uncomfortable; everyone waited, waiting for Gu Jin Nian's supreme New Learning.
But they did not expect that, in the end, it was all for naught.
This made the crowd feel uneasy.
On the Martial Arts Stage, the great scholars had already begun to expound their respective teachings.
But below the Martial Arts Stage.
Tens of thousands of eyes still focused on Gu Jin Nian; they hoped he would reveal the supreme New Learning.
Unfortunately,
Gu Jin Nian gave no reply, but sat cross‑legged, quietly listening to the great scholars' lectures.
It seemed he sensed the crowd's attitude.
On the Martial Arts Stage.
The Xiongnu State's Great Scholar frowned slightly; what was originally an academic debate seemed to have turned into a personal show for Gu Jin Nian, who currently had no New Learning, yet these people still couldn't forget it.
They kept staring at Gu Jin Nian as they gave their academic lecture here, yet no one bothered to listen.
How could this not make people angry?
"The way of ritual learning lies in sincerity, in humility, and in seeking truth from facts."
"A true scholar should possess sincerity and humility; if a youth achieves success, he should be even more aware that there is heaven beyond heaven, focus on seeking truth from facts—if there is none, there is none; if there is, there is."
"Relying on creating momentum to achieve one's goal is unacceptable."
"More importantly, one should have respect."
The Xiongnu State's Great Scholar spoke, expounding the way of ritual learning, but when he said this, he turned his gaze toward the many young students, his eyes somewhat icy.
"If you are unwilling to listen to this scholarship, you may leave; since you have come to the Jixia Academy, why not listen to the lectures?"
"What meaning is there?"
"Did you come here just to see some false things?"
He spoke, his voice icy, carrying displeasure.
【663】 Not only him; on the martial arts platform, half of the Great Scholars were somewhat emotional, they being renowned Great Scholars from various places.
Not only him, on the martial arts platform, half of the Great Scholars were somewhat emotional; they were renowned Great Scholars from various places.
Each enjoyed extremely high prestige.
Usually, when they open lectures, who knows how many people would come to listen; some would even endure hardship, traveling a thousand miles just to hear their teachings.
But now, these scholars each stared at Gu Jin Nian—how could they not be angry?
Before, Gu Jin Nian's creation of momentum had already made them very displeased.
Regardless of whether it was Gu Jin Nian's intention, Su Wenjing's such creation of momentum was indeed somewhat improper.
Now, a perfectly good academic lecture hall has been outright ignored—could one possibly not be angry?
Upon hearing these words, the students all snapped back to attention.
By this moment, Gu Jin Nian still hadn't spoken; it was obvious he truly hadn't spoken falsely.
He had no supreme New Learning.
This completely shattered their expectations.
Indeed.
This Xiongnu State Great Scholar, in his words, carried various implications, yet Gu Jin Nian indeed showed not the slightest reaction.
To say he had no emotion would also be impossible.
However, Gu Jin Nian understood the purpose of his coming here.
He came to study.
On the way here, Gu Jin Nian already realized that he came to the Jixia Academy not to lecture on any supreme New Learning, but to study.
He wished, through study, to perfect his scholarship.
Of course, facing the Xiongnu State Great Scholar's words, Gu Jin Nian felt emotion but could suppress it, understanding the other party.
After all, his earlier creation of momentum had caused some inappropriate incidents, which was his fault.
Although he wasn't the main instigator, ultimately he was in the wrong to begin with.
Thus, he did not offer excessive explanations, nor did he want to argue; he calmly listened to the end of the academic lecture, understood it well, and in this way his purpose for coming here could be considered fulfilled.
Furthermore, the Jixia Academy had delayed him half a year, and having nothing to show for it was not good; if he still caused a disturbance here, it would be somewhat inexcusable.
Taking all of the above into account,
Gu Jin Nian did not cause an emotional scene; instead, he kept silent.
He looked at everyone honestly.
Only then did the Xiongnu State Great Scholar feel somewhat satisfied.
Afterward, they continued their academic discussion.
"I believe that the study of Confucianism should continue to uphold the way of ritual."
"Without ritual, one is not human."
"Now that Heaven's Mandate is at hand, before long the great age will descend; if people lack ritual, they may give rise to arrogance, invite conflict, and affect the world."
"Likewise, in affairs between two states, harmony is prized, which is originally the ritual of the state and the ruler; yet because of problems in human ritual, it leads to war between the two states, causing countless casualties."
"In war, everyone is a loser; if human ritual is lacking, perhaps uttering a phrase like 'the suffering of the people in rise and fall' could very well become a catalyst for war, causing endless people to be separated from spouse and child, wandering in distress."
The Xiongnu State Great Scholar spoke up, asserting that the way of ritual is orthodox scholarship.
Yet he used this matter as a metaphor, openly and covertly, to some extent still mocking Gu Jin Nian.
It is quite apparent that he seems to harbor a grudge against Gu Jin Nian.
Because the targeting is very intense.
As a result, Gu Jin Nian couldn't help but frown.
"His nephew died beneath the fire stone."
Just then, Su Wenjing's mental transmission sounded in Gu Jin Nian's ear.
Upon hearing this, Gu Jin Nian understood clearly.
No wonder this fellow bears such great hostility toward me; I hadn't expected it to be because of this matter.
Somewhat helpless.
But now that he understood, Gu Jin Nian still endured it a little.
"The way of ritual law is indeed good, but with Heaven's Mandate about to descend, if we still revolve around ritual law, it will ultimately still be somewhat improper."
"We need new scholarship, a change in thinking."
"One of the Seven Sages of Bamboo Mountain spoke, acknowledging ritual law but also feeling that from ancient times to the present, Confucianism has taken ritual as its main focus."
"Now that we have reached this point, we should also change."
After saying that, he continued to speak, elaborating his view on New Learning.
Then, he presented his own New Learning.
Class education.
In short, it means that Heaven's Mandate is about to arrive, everything in heaven and earth has a fixed destiny, so why not divide scholars into several grades and treat them accordingly; the more gifted should receive more effort and be carefully cultivated.
The ungifted, in fact, should not study.
They only need to understand some principles.
This idea was put forward.
It indeed made many nod, deeming it feasible.
However, Gu Jin Nian, upon hearing it, could not help but speak up.
"Sir."
"Isn't this New Learning just an academic clique?"
"If implemented this way, does it mean scholars' classes will become fixed?"
"Moreover, teachers should practice Teaching Without Class; abandoning students because of poor aptitude would be unfair, wouldn't it?"
"Also, how to assess aptitude? How to judge what works and what doesn't? No one is perfect; if a student errs, the master can err too, right?"
Gu Jin Nian spoke.
Since he understood that he was here to learn, he naturally should ask immediately upon hearing something amiss.
Otherwise, whatever others say and whatever he hears would make his presence here meaningless. Hearing this, one of the Seven Sages of Zhu Shan frowned slightly; he hadn't expected Gu Jin Nian to pick a flaw right away.
Only, before he could speak—
The Great Scholar of the Xiongnu Nation spoke again.
"You do not understand scholarship."
"You are not yet qualified to speak."
"Listen, just listen carefully."
He spoke, rebuking Gu Jin Nian for speaking out of turn.
The words left his mouth—
Gu Jin Nian's brows tightened.
After all, isn't he also a Great Scholar of heaven and earth? Seeing his youth, should they truly treat him as a senior? He can understand the emotion, but why have they repeatedly suppressed him?
"Since this is a scholarly dispute, isn't raising questions the norm?"
"If you remain emotional, you have no right to sit up there."
At this moment, Su Wenjing's voice rang out.
Although he knew his hype was wrong, he couldn't stand seeing someone suppress his own student like that.
The one on horseback.
Gu Jin Nian, however he speaks, is also a Great Scholar of heaven and earth; truly, in terms of Confucian‑Taoist rank, he isn't inferior to any of you, right?
"Just keep targeting? That's enough, isn't it? Is this really necessary?"
Hearing Su Wenjing speak thus, the crowd on the Martial Stage fell silent; the Great Scholar of the Xiongnu Nation's expression soured, and the Seven Sages of Zhu Shan were at a loss for words.
"In a scholarly dispute, anyone may ask questions and raise doubts."
"Gu Jin Nian is not wrong."
At that moment, the Dean of Jixia Academy spoke, acknowledging Gu Jin Nian.
As the Dean spoke, the dozens of Great Scholars on the Martial Stage had little left to say.
"If students are divided into three, six, nine ranks, then teachers must also be divided likewise; based on that, regarding aptitude, the first three years of a private school can already reveal some."
"Of course, though there is the saying that a clumsy bird flies early and diligence can make up for lack, all resources are limited; we cannot spread limited resources over endless students."
"In extraordinary times, extraordinary responses; after Heaven's Mandate descends, every nation and sect will spare no effort to vie for it."
"Our Confucian and Taoist schools also urgently need to cultivate a batch of outstanding talents; otherwise, in this great world struggle, we will have no chance of victory."
One of the Seven Sages of Zhu Shan spoke, answering Gu Jin Nian's question.
In fact, this is elite education.
Gu Jin Nian understood as soon as he heard it.
Elite education is indeed good, but its most terrifying aspect is class solidification; once that occurs, it is not a boon for countless future generations.
At first it's fine to say a few; a group of people, through elite training, become learned scholars, perhaps they will learn from the previous generation.
However, as their descendants are born, under various interests, the second, third, and fourth generations—
—when the fourth generation arrives, the class becomes essentially fixed, forming an academic clique, with knowledge sealed.
Thus, officials' sons continue to hold office, the rich's sons are born into wealth.
The poor remain poor for life; before them, every class is uncrossable.
If the father is a laborer, you are a laborer.
If the father is a tenant farmer, you are a tenant farmer.
Even if you are gifted, even if you have a heart that wishes to change your fate, under the terrifying class rule you can only be a good beast of burden, an ambitious beast of burden, and nothing more.
Thinking this, Gu Jin Nian rose, shook his head, and said.
"I do not approve."
"People should not be divided into three, six, nine ranks."
"Scholars likewise should not be divided into three, six, nine ranks."
"All people are born equal; if there are three, six, nine ranks, the disaster of academic cliques will follow."
"Then, the scholar's son will still be a scholar."
"The son of a destitute commoner is still a destitute commoner."
"Such a thing will brew a great disaster."
Gu Jin Nian shook his head; he was very resistant.
Though the dynasty has three, six, nine ranks, this is a governing need: soldiers are born into life‑and‑death, officials serve until death; beyond reputation, it is also for future generations.
The emperor, in order to rule the country, chose this course; there is no argument.
Yet scholars also create such academic cliques and classes; isn't that nonsense?
Hearing Gu Jin Nian's opposition, the Zhu Shan Seven Sages each frowned; this is something they have studied for decades, now directly denied by Gu Jin Nian, so they are naturally displeased.
"May I dare ask whether Gu Gong has a better New Learning?"
They spoke, questioning Gu Jin Nian.
"What does this have to do with whether I have a New Learning?"
"Your scholarship is fundamentally unworkable."
Gu Jin Nian spoke up; hearing the term New Learning irritated him—how can one not speak without a New Learning? That makes no sense, he thought. "Centralized cultivation, though flawed, at least I feel the problem is minor; one only needs to understand propriety."
"Moreover, Zhou Bo, Great Scholar, just said, 'Extraordinary times, extraordinary responses.'"
"You are clearly picking faults here."
"You failed to create momentum yourself, and now you pick faults? What is your true intention?"
The Xiongnu Nation Great Scholar opened his mouth, appearing very angry.
He thought Gu Jin Nian was clearly picking faults here.
Actually picking faults is not a big deal, even quite normal; people usually criticize each other, but the issue remains a past matter.
Gu Jin Nian created momentum.
After building the momentum, he could say nothing further.
When others said something, Gu Jin Nian directly denied it, giving no chance to anyone.
This naturally provoked resentment.
However, if Gu Jin Nian did not speak, he would still voice his objections, pointing out what he found unreasonable.
Yet one could see Gu Jin Nian and the Zhu Shan Seven Sages hurling retorts at each other.
He directly chose to side with the Zhu Shan Seven Sages.
"Gu Gong."
"If there had been no prior deliberate momentum, I would indeed support you."
"But the earlier momentum also makes me think, Gu Gong, have you become somewhat deliberate?"
At this moment, the Fuyu Dynasty Great Scholar also spoke.
He thought Gu Jin Nian was stirring trouble here.
The scholarly dispute itself lies in the character meaning 'conflict'.
"Gu Gong's dispute is not wrong; perhaps you could also present your own learning."
"Just now hearing Gu Gong say he hasn't fully thought it through, that means he still has a small insight."
"Why not bring it out, and we can discuss together?"
At this point, the Great Jin Dynasty Great Scholar spoke; although his words seemed to smooth things over, a discerning eye could see they still carried some targeting.
Facing the back‑and‑forth criticisms from these Great Scholars on the training arena.
Gu Jin Nian's brows knit extremely tightly.
"Scholarly dispute."
"Why must Gu (someone) keep being asked to produce a New Learning?"
"Also, is this momentum truly fabricated?"
"If one lacks virtue and ability, one could not create such momentum, right?"
"Gu (someone) wishes to ask."
"Is this scholarly dispute truly about exploring scholarship, or just about arguing here?"
Gu Jin Nian spoke up.
To be honest, Gu Jin Nian had little patience for certain individuals, but considering that the Jixia Academy had delayed him for half a year, he truly could not act recklessly.
He needed to restrain himself.
This was a face‑saving gesture to the Jixia Academy.
If it weren't for the Jixia Academy, Gu Jin Nian might not know what he would do.
Yet at that moment, a voice suddenly rang out.
It stepped forward from the crowd.
"Indeed, senior elders, you have been somewhat excessive."
"Gu Gong is a Heaven‑and‑Earth Great Scholar, his knowledge astonishing; he is modest and does not wish to present a New Learning lest he become too ostentatious. Of course, his students also believe that Gu Gong wishes to thoroughly study his own teachings before spreading them to the world."
"Nevertheless, whatever the case, Gu Gong's actions are clear to us scholars; yet several seniors, because of the momentum issue, act emotionally and repeatedly target Gu Gong. The contrast is stark."
The voice rang out.
It was passionate and stirring.
Yet those words made one feel nauseous.
"Isn't this just dragging hatred onto oneself?"
Gu Jin Nian glanced over.
He did not recognize.
"He is Chang Yun Tian."
At that moment, Su Wenjing's voice sounded, informing Gu Jin Nian who this person was.
Chang Yun Tian? In an instant, Gu Jin Nian knew who it was.
The person who, during the previous Da Xia heavenly disaster, produced half a scroll of the Heaven's Mandate sage scripture.
This fellow has no good intentions.
Sure enough, as soon as Chang Yun Tian said that, more than twenty Great Scholars on the performance platform became somewhat displeased.
"Since that is so, then I ask your Gu Gong to present the supreme New Learning, even if it is a half‑finished work; I will accept it," he said.
"Supreme New Learning, even if only a part, as long as it is spoken, its meaning changes. At present we cannot articulate any New Learning, but we would like to see what New Learning Gu Gong can produce," he continued.
"I also wish to hear what the supreme New Learning actually is," he said.
At this very moment.
The Great Scholars on the performance platform each began to speak; the Zhu Shan Qi Xian, as well as the Xiongnu Nation, the Fuyu Dynasty, the Great Jin Dynasty, and nearly half of the other Great Scholars rose to their feet.
Some other Great Scholars, though not overly emotional, felt somewhat displeased after hearing Chang Yun Tian's words.
This step‑on‑step‑off tactic indeed makes one feel disgusted.
In fact, under normal circumstances, these Great Scholars are not foolish; they instantly sensed that Chang Yun Tian had a problem.
But because of earlier reasons, Su Wenjing had built momentum for Gu Jin Nian, and thereafter any questioning of Gu Jin Nian would be attacked.
Thus they would be criticized, and for this reason, when confronting Chang Yun Tian's actions, the crowd did not think there was a serious problem.
They only considered that Chang Yun Tian overly revered Gu Jin Nian.
Therefore, regarding Chang Yun Tian's remarks, they would not dislike Chang Yun Tian, but would grow more resentful of Gu Jin Nian.
Regardless of whether you, Gu Jin Nian, covertly directed this matter, the beneficiary is you, Gu Jin Nian, so you naturally must bear the consequences.
"Gu, I still say the same thing,"
"There is no supreme New Learning."
"I have my own knowledge, but it is not mature, and Gu has never claimed that this is the supreme New Learning."
"Furthermore, this is the Jixia Academy; at present you are engaged in an academic dispute. As a Great Scholar of Heaven and Earth and an invitee, Gu has the right to question your scholarship and the qualification to point out errors."
"You all here keep clinging to the New Learning; Gu wants to ask, what does this mean?"
"Could it be that without New Learning one has no right to discuss the Dao here?"
Gu Jin Nian spoke calmly.
He was not deceived; instead, he expounded his thoughts, clarifying them.
At the same time he looked toward Chang Yun Tian, and just as he was about to speak, several voices rang out from the crowd.
"What you said is correct."
"Without New Learning, one has no right to discuss the Dao here?"
"Indeed, since this is an academic dispute, what does it matter if Gu Gong says a couple of sentences? As Great Scholars, do you even lack this bit of magnanimity?"
"What if we pick at flaws? An academic dispute inherently allows criticism; if you disagree, you may freely voice your thoughts, then you'll see who is bullying Gu Gong?"
Two voices sounded, full of discontent, attacking the Zhu Shan Qi Xian and the Great Scholars on the performance platform.
Gu Jin Nian heard those two voices, and his expression grew even more displeased.
At this critical juncture, it is a struggle among them; no one should keep fanning the flames.
These remarks seem to help oneself, but in reality they harm oneself.
"Indeed, Gu Gong's words are correct."
"Since this is an academic dispute, why not let it be contested?"
"Yes, an academic dispute hinges on the very word 'dispute'."
"Indeed, trying to create academic cliques and rank scholars into three, six, nine tiers is truly laughable."
Soon, some responding voices rose; these people were truly carried by the preceding sounds.
After all, the Zhu Shan Qi Xian aim to create academic factions, dividing scholars into three, six, nine levels; while they may not see it as a fault, it inevitably sounds problematic.
"Fine."
"Truly wonderful, this Jixia Academy—how many times have I come here? Yet never have I seen anything like today, where power suppresses people instead of scholarship."
Zhou Bo, one of the Zhu Shan Qi Xian Great Scholars, could not help but sneer.
"Gu Jin Nian, a year ago you were suppressed by the Kong Family's Main Residence, and scholars across the world criticized you. Now, a year later, you have become the second Kong Family; look at yourself—does this not resemble the scene when the Kong family once attacked you?"
Another Great Scholar sneered and spoke.
"In fact, arguing is not wrong; it is like two people quarreling—normally a few exchanges are enough, and then they stop."
Suddenly, a by‑stander arrived, and that changed everything.
It could continue arguing endlessly, even to the point of tearing the façade apart, which is not impossible.
The involvement of Chang Yun Tian and others completely spoiled the matter.
"Enough."
Gu Jin Nian spoke; in an instant the entire hall fell completely silent.
A short distance away, Chang Yun Tian appeared calm, yet his heart held a sense of assured victory.
At this point, Gu Jin Nian was caught on a tiger he could not dismount; he either had to continue arguing with these Great Scholars...
... or rebuke these scholars; but whatever he did, Gu Jin Nian would not benefit.
"This is an academic dispute, not a quarrel."
"The Jixia Academy has delayed for Gu for half a year; I acknowledge this courtesy."
"My earlier words were not expressed clearly."
"I hope everyone continues the discussion."
Gu Jin Nian spoke; he chose to step back, not intending to continue the argument, as it was meaningless.
Likewise, Gu Jin Nian turned his gaze toward Chang Yun Tian.
"Chang Yun Tian."
"Some things, you don't need to get involved."
"Go back into the crowd."
Gu Jin Nian spoke lightly; he neither scolded nor angrily rebuked Chang Yun Tian, for in others' eyes Chang Yun Tian was an ordinary person who respected him, and scolding him would cause them to resent.
"Lord Gu, the student is merely speaking up for Lord Gu."
"If this place indeed does not welcome Lord Gu, Lord Gu may leave; the student is willing to follow Lord Gu in leaving."
Chang Yun Tian, hearing this, spoke without humility or arrogance.
It seemed as if Gu Jin Nian had suffered great humiliation.
However, these words sounded extremely grating to the ears of the Bamboo Mountain Seven Sages and others.
"What a notion to follow and leave!"
"Then we might as well leave; this way, the Heaven's Mandate Marquis can directly pass three gates, and everything will belong to the Marquis."
The Xiongnu State's Great Scholar spoke up; at this point he no longer hid anything, and lashed out without mercy.
"Indeed, we might as well leave; otherwise, after this academic debate ends."
"We would still earn the reputation of suppressing juniors."
"The old man approves."
The Great Scholars of the Fuyu Dynasty and the Great Jin Dynasty also dropped the act; at this point they spoke directly.
"Go back."
"At this moment."
Gu Jin Nian's gaze fell on Chang Yun Tian; he still had patience, but only a little remained.
"Hearing these words."
Chang Yun Tian continued to speak.
"Lord Gu."
"Clearly it's their fault; why do you endure?"
"The student refuses to accept!"
"You have done so much for the world's people, saving countless commoners; yet look at them, each lacking virtue and character."
"Lord Gu, still that saying: if you leave, we will follow you and leave, and we can't be bothered to listen to these damned Great Scholars making noise here."
Chang Yun Tian is still disgusting people here.
But one must admit, this disgusting person's tactics are effective.
"Hmph."
"They keep saying we are a clique of scholars."
"Now the true scholar clique is right before our eyes; it's truly laughable."
"Let's go; we've come this far, we'll leave too."
"Indeed, this person who stirs up trouble is different; we can't match them; if we don't leave now, staying will only invite ridicule."
"An academic debate? Hah, it's just a struggle for influence."
"Truly ashamed to be associated with you."
At this moment, more than twenty Great Scholars on the Martial Arts Stage began to move; at this point they also left.
They all could not swallow this anger.
"In the rear hall."
Gu Jin Nian looked at Chang Yun Tian.
Upon hearing their voices again, Gu Jin Nian couldn't help but let out a long sigh.
He closed his eyes.
He seemed utterly powerless.
Meanwhile, Chang Yun Tian coldly sneered in his heart.
"However."
Just as those twenty-plus Great Scholars successively stepped down from the Martial Arts Stage,
Gu Jin Nian's voice slowly sounded.
"Everyone."
"Wait."
"In an instant."
Countless gazes involuntarily turned toward it.
Each gaze showed some surprise.
Su Wenjing couldn't help but clench his fist, as if thinking of something.
And Gu Jin Nian's gaze, at this moment, became extremely firm and cold.
However, his gaze locked onto Chang Yun Tian.
The latter frowned slightly, inexplicably feeling a sense of danger.
