Chapter 85: Opening the Wen Mansion, Forging War Chariots, Reviving the Ages: Gu Jin Nian Becomes the Confucian‑Daoist Holy Son

~38 min read 7,514 words

Inside the Wenxin Hall.

All the Great Scholars rose and bowed toward Gu Jin Nian, honoring the Holy Son.

Holy Son.

It does not mean a descendant of a saint.

Rather, it is an honorific for a youthful saint.

Throughout history, only a few have earned the title of Holy Son.

There are honorifics, but the only one who truly commands such universal respect is Gu Jin Nian alone.

One could say that at today's Da Xia Poetry Gathering, Gu Jin Nian subdued everyone present with his strength.

"Today's event can become a timeless legend."

"Naturally, it is a legend."

"Marvelous, marvelous."

Voices rose one after another, expressing that witnessing today's event with their own eyes left no regrets.

"I never imagined that one day, I would see such a grand scene."

"Crown Prince, I have some words I'm not sure whether to say."

"Don't think I'm old; in fact, I'm still vigorous."

"Would you like to take me as your master? Rest assured, I will impart many teachings so you can become a saint soon."

At this moment, Zhao Ru stepped forward, looking at Gu Jin Nian with hopeful eyes, wishing to become his master.

Upon hearing this, many frowned, especially the Great Scholars.

"Good fellow, seeing Gu Jin Nian's talent, you now want to take a disciple? No way."

"I'll go as well."

"Crown Prince, Zhao Ru is already aged; his words just now were nonsense. Your Highness, with such talent, you should find a younger teacher. How about me?"

"Yes, yes, Zhao Ru's age is indeed too great, unfit to be a teacher. Crown Prince, I know astronomy above and geography below; though I am merely a Great Scholar, it's not excessive to be your teacher."

At that moment, all the Great Scholars stood up, each itching to act.

"Today is the Da Xia Poetry Gathering; the matter of taking disciples should wait until Jin Nian truly Establishes Speech."

Seeing everyone's enthusiasm rise, Su Wenjing immediately stepped forward to intervene.

This is the Da Xia Poetry Gathering.

It's not a disciple‑recruiting convention; there's no need for this, and where are the foreign talents? How disgraceful?

Su Wenjing's words still hold sway.

But Zhao Ru grew angry; these guys call out "Zhao Ru, Zhao Ru" respectfully every day, yet change their faces so quickly at the crucial moment?

"Is there any respect for the elderly and love for the young? 'Jin Nian, your poetry is indeed superb, but for the Confucian‑Daoist lineage, poetry is merely an embellishment.'"

"True Confucian‑Daoism lies in the Classics; you have saintly talent, but still need polishing."

"Regarding the Classics, I dare not claim to be the foremost, yet throughout the Da Xia Dynasty, few can match my depth."

"Young friend Jin Nian, I truly cherish talent. However, today is the Da Xia Poetry Gathering; I won't press you. Take some time to consider and give me your answer, okay?"

Zhao Ru continued speaking.

The core of Confucian‑Daoism is the Classics, not poetry.

Poetry is merely a side branch among scholars; it can showcase your overflowing talent but does not represent your Confucian‑Daoist achievement.

Zhao Ru's words made it hard for Gu Jin Nian to decline.

In truth, he knows the core is the Classics, yet he currently has no need to study them.

More precisely, it's not that he doesn't need to learn, but he has not yet Established Speech nor reached the true third realm of Confucian‑Daoism, so he temporarily need not study the Classics.

He only didn't expect to found the Wen Mansion so early.

Theoretically, he is still at a student stage, not yet truly on the Confucian‑Daoist path.

Thus, Zhao Ru's words are truthful, but Gu Jin Nian feels some resistance to making him his teacher.

"A teacher is also a father; if I weren't a transmigrator, it would be fine, but being a transmigrator with so many Classics in my mind, there's naturally no need to take another as master."

"Most importantly, Zhao Ru, don't you consider Kong Yu's feelings at all?"

Inside the Grand Hall.

Kong Yu's uneasy expression grew even more displeased, especially seeing Zhao Ru so courteous to Gu Jin Nian; he felt extremely uncomfortable.

Zhao Ru was the person he invited, and now he looks at Gu Jin Nian with such admiration—truly a complete slap in the face.

He felt very uncomfortable.

Extremely uncomfortable.

At that moment, in the Grand Hall, Gu Jin Nian inhaled deeply; six stars rose above the Wen Mansion, Holy Punishment's Light blazing, representing one timeless essay and five timeless poems.

There was also a dimmer star, the National Stabilizing Poem.

Five golden war chariots shone even more brilliantly.

But ultimately, all the light contracted and entered Gu Jin Nian's body.

The phenomenon vanished.

The Wenxin Hall also became utterly quiet.

And Gu Jin Nian's gaze, at that moment, fell upon Kong Yu.

When Gu Jin Nian's gaze landed.

Kong Yu's complexion changed.

The crowd gradually understood what Gu Jin Nian intended to do.

Earlier, Gu Jin Nian and Kong Yu had made a wager.

Now Gu Jin Nian not only proved his own strength, but also forged the Nine Refined War Chariot, something never seen before in ancient or modern times.

Thus, trouble has come.

"Brother Kong."

"Do you still remember our agreement?"

Gu Jin Nian spoke, his tone calm.

Hearing this, Kong Yu's face turned grim; he lowered his head, not knowing how to answer.

The previous wager was to kneel and kowtow, three kowtows and nine bows; thereafter, each time he saw Gu Jin Nian, he would kneel once.

If he really did that, this holy grandson of his would completely lose face, and it would also make the Kong family lose face.

"Young Friend Jin Nian."

"This matter, I think it's unnecessary; you have already forged the Nine Refined War Chariot, an achievement unmatched in ancient or modern times, truly shaking the past and present."

At this moment, a voice sounded; it was an old scholar looking at Gu Jin Nian, who advised thus:

Although Kong Yu is somewhat pushy, no matter what, Kong Yu is the heir of the Kong family and can be called a holy grandson; others may not necessarily represent the Kong family.

But this holy grandson is different; he can fully represent the Kong family.

If he were to kneel, it would truly be a major incident.

Therefore, someone advised, after all, the Kong family's influence is great.

As someone spoke up, shortly thereafter many others also voiced their opinions.

"Young Friend Jin Nian, you have now become a holy son, and have accomplished such an extraordinary feat, truly worthy of celebration; in today's dispute, the holy son can be broad-minded and resolve grudges with a smile."

"Yes, yes, resolving grudges with a smile can also leave a tale for the ages."

"The holy son's affair today is delightful and congratulatory, a great blessing and a major joy for the Confucian Dao; why not just let it go?"

Voices sounded, each very amicable, hoping that Lord Gu Jin Nian would not hold the faults of petty people against him.

Meanwhile, Kong Yu lowered his head slightly and said nothing.

Now that he has lost, if he says anything else, it would be embarrassing.

"Young Friend Jin Nian."

"Today's matter is due to my nephew's rashness; I apologize here, and the Kong family will surely remember this favor."

At this moment, Kong Ping also stepped forward.

Looking at Gu Jin Nian, he said thus:

Kong Ping spoke, intending to turn a big matter into a small one, and a small matter into nothing.

However, facing everyone's persuasion, Gu Jin Nian did not speak; instead, after everyone had finished speaking, his gaze inevitably fell on Kong Yu.

"Everyone."

"It's not that I, as the heir, am unreasonable."

"I, the heir, only want to ask one thing: if at this moment I were the one who lost, would you all advise this holy grandson of the Kong family to forgive me?"

Gu Jin Nian was not pushy; he simply posed this counter-question.

"That is natural."

"Yes, the holy grandson should also have such breadth of mind."

"Exactly, exactly, he also has such breadth of mind."

In an instant, many voices sounded, speaking out in turn, saying thus:

Who wouldn't say pleasant words?

Now many people's thoughts are also simple; they do not want the situation to become too stiff, for the court it is unnecessary, after all the Kong family's heir came to the Da Xia Capital; if he loses face and leaves, they would also have difficulty explaining.

For an individual, the Kong Family's Main Residence holds too high a status to offend; now helping to say a few kind words also counts as forming a good affinity.

Either way, there is no loss.

Even Kong Ping joined in speaking.

"I think the holy grandson will certainly be magnanimous."

Kong Ping spoke with a gentle expression.

"Good."

"If so, then let us examine the heart."

"Mr. Su Wenjing, please trouble yourself to act, to examine the heart of this holy grandson of the Kong family; if he truly can be magnanimous, I will remain silent and resolve grudges with a smile."

"But if the holy grandson cannot do so, then I dare ask you all, on what grounds should I be expected to do so?"

Gu Jin Nian spoke lightly.

He knew these people would deny responsibility, but it didn't matter; his grandfather was here, and his uncle was here watching, so he wasn't afraid that Kong Yu would cause any major trouble.

Indeed.

As soon as these words were spoken, everyone was momentarily speechless.

To be honest, whether Gu Jin Nian will resolve grudges with a smile, they don't know, but Kong Yu certainly will not.

After all, Kong Yu does not submit to Gu Jin Nian, because of Heaven's Mandate and also because of previous grudges.

One can say anything with one's mouth, after all it cannot be pursued.

But examining the heart is different.

When Su Wenjing comes to examine the heart, Kong Yu will absolutely speak the truth; at that point, he will truly be unable to hold back.

"Young Friend Jin Nian, the method of examining the heart is too direct and will affect the mind; in my view, this matter should end here, counted as forming a good affinity."

"Yes, yes, the method of examining the heart is too direct; actually there's no need to do this, Young Friend, you have also obtained the Confucian Dao's Heaven's Mandate, which is a great joy; let unhappy things be left in the past."

Again, several voices sounded, still speaking up to excuse Kong Yu.

One cannot deny that the descendants of sages are indeed different; although they have clearly made mistakes, many still come forward to speak up for them.

This is the benefit of status and rank.

When ordinary people make a mistake, they are dealt with according to the rules.

But when nobles make a mistake, they can just slowly smooth it over.

Everyone.

I respect you all as senior scholars of the Confucian Dao, so I call you sir.

But this matter is a grudge between me and Kong Yu.

If I hadn't written this poem today, Kong Yu would be pressing me hard, making this heir kneel, and this heir would like to ask you all, would you intercede for me?

If one goes back on their word, are they still fit to be a scholar?

Gu Jin Nian's voice gradually turned icy.

It's not that I won't ask for leniency; it depends on the matter and circumstances, but Kong Yu clearly intends to make me embarrassed.

Under everyone's watch, to slander me by claiming I got the topic early and ruin my reputation—I could let that slide.

Moreover, they deliberately used such a difficult question to disgust me.

Isn't it just to torment me to death?

If that's the case, why should I let him off? Just because he's the Kong family's holy grandson? I am still the eldest grandson of the Gu family.

This

The crowd fell silent, some not knowing what to say.

But just then, Grandfather Gu's voice sounded involuntarily.

If Jin Nian loses, whether he agrees or not, I will make him kneel and kowtow.

A mistake is a mistake, a loss is a loss; I don't understand the classics and poetry, I only know that going back on one's word is not manly.

Of course, if you think the Kong family outweighs my Gu family, that's fine; we grandfather and grandson will just swallow this loss.

First, it's the emperor's grace, which I respect.

Second, who let the Kong family's power become so overwhelming that even I, a duke, look down on them?

Just don't blame me for being ruthless and heartless from now on.

Grandfather Gu's voice sounded.

He unconditionally stood up, supported Gu Jin Nian, took a sip of wine, and laid down his words.

Today's matter can be dropped; those who don't want to make a fuss can stay unhappy, but after it's over, don't blame me for lacking morality.

Speaking frankly.

The State-Pacifying Duke's remarks made many people frown.

This guy himself has no sense of moral shame; if he gets the upper hand, the court won't have peace afterward, and the Kong residence can prepare to be harassed by the State-Pacifying Duke.

Even His Majesty cannot handle it.

Moreover, Gu Jin Nian is, after all, his nephew; if his nephew is bullied, not helping would be bad enough, but to stop his own father from stepping in? That's unreasonable.

Reasonably speaking, this bunch of coarse martial artists are experts at twisting logic, truly prompting the State-Pacifying Duke to start wrangling.

Alright, everyone can start swaying now.

Come on, sway.

Your words, Duke, are over, over; we never thought that way.

Yes, yes, Duke, we absolutely had no such intention regarding this matter.

Right, right, right.

Many people looked at each other, not even the Great Scholar daring to argue with the State-Pacifying Duke at this moment.

Who let someone else's grandson be outstanding.

Speaking bluntly, Gu Jin Nian currently overflows with talent; perhaps one day he will truly achieve great feats—who would dare offend him? In the past, offending was understandable given the civil-military divide, but now it's different; Gu Jin Nian has filled the Gu family's biggest shortcoming.

That is a good thing.

But it might also not be a good thing.

Since that's not what you meant, then all of you, shut your mouths for me.

What's the Kong family's business got to do with you?

Those who don't know might think you're from the Kong family.

Grandfather Gu has no good temper; he simply won't put up with it.

Whatever great scholars, in his view this bunch of great scholars can only spout off a couple lines—what else can they do? Upon saying this.

Many people are somewhat unhappy, yet they truly don't know how to rebut.

Kong Yu.

Don't put on an act here; if you truly are magnanimous, then consult your conscience.

If you dare not consult your conscience, then act as agreed: a gentleman's word is hard to chase even by four horses.

Gu Jin Nian spoke.

He stared at Kong Yu; this guy is typical of someone who betrays his own, relying on his status as the Kong family's holy grandson to look down on everyone, despising this and that.

Now that it's in his hands, will Gu Jin Nian indulge him? Hearing Gu Jin Nian's words, Kong Yu's face fell; he dare not consult his conscience.

The reason is simple: if Gu Jin Nian loses, he not only wants to reclaim Heaven's Mandate, but also wants Gu Jin Nian to kneel and kowtow.

No matter who comes, it's useless; he even made two-handed preparations—if the State-Pacifying Duke steps in to try to turn the tide, he will return and mobilize the Kong family's strength.

He will have scholars worldwide criticize Gu Jin Nian and criticize the Gu family.

If he doesn't ruin the Gu family's reputation, he won't bear the Kong surname.

But unexpectedly, Gu Jin Nian won, and did so simply and directly.

He himself instead became a laughingstock.

Now, facing Gu Jin Nian's remarks.

Kong Yu couldn't help but clench his fist.

Kneel?

He could never kneel.

He is a holy grandson of the Kong family.

He must never kneel; if he kneels today, what face will he have left to face the world later?

Sensing Kong Yu's emotional fluctuation, Kong Ping on the side immediately spoke.

"Jin Nian, little friend, how about this: I will apologize to you on behalf of Kong Yu. After a few days, I will retrieve three Half Saint handbooks from the Kong Family's Main Residence and give them to you."

"It is said that enemies should be resolved, not tied. If you are willing to give the Kong family this face, the Kong family will remember this kindness."

Kong Ping spoke.

He also raised his voice in this manner, still urging Gu Jin Nian.

"Stop nagging."

"Kneel."

Gu Jin Nian spoke again, his gaze icy.

He was too lazy to waste words on this nonsense; those Half Saint handbooks may be valuable, but it's not as if he can't obtain them himself.

Gu Jin Nian's firmness had only a simple reason.

If he were to lose, he believed that even if his grandfather begged the other side desperately, they would still refuse forgiveness.

"Oh, I made a mistake, and you want to crush me to death."

"You make a mistake, and you can be forgiven?"

As for the claim that he has now forged a Nine‑Refinement War Chariot, congratulations indeed; there is no precedent and no successor.

Did this not come from his own skill? Was it a gift from the Kong family? He really loves to plaster gold on his own face.

However, at that moment.

A voice sounded.

"Your Majesty, the Holy Ruler has arrived."

Outside the gate, a voice rang out.

In an instant, the hall fell silent.

Many people were moved, some surprised.

No one expected that the Holy Ruler would actually come in person?

The Holy Ruler's status is a hundred times higher than Kong Yu's; despite Kong Yu being the heir apparent, the Holy Ruler has many sons beyond him. If he wished, he could replace the heir tomorrow, entirely at his own discretion.

Most importantly, rumors say the Holy Ruler has entered the Half Saint realm; of course it's rumor, but historically nine out of ten Holy Rulers become Half Saints, enjoying the holy radiance brought by Confucius.

At this moment, even the Duke of the Nation was moved, and even the emperor's eyes flashed with a hint of something unusual.

The Holy Ruler has come to the capital.

As an emperor, he had no information at all; this is crucial.

"Please."

However, Emperor Yong Sheng did not nag, directly inviting the other party inside.

And in Kong Yu's tense gaze, a flash of joy instantly appeared.

His father had arrived, and this matter could be properly resolved.

The next moment.

A figure appeared.

It was a middle‑aged man, wearing a scholar's robe, with sparse beard, looking somewhat gaunt, yet between his brows gathered a powerful aura.

He walked forward, surrounded by talent; his attire was plain, but his bearing was extraordinary.

"I, the old man, pay my respects to Your Majesty."

"May Your Majesty live ten thousand years, ten thousand years, ten thousand ten thousand years."

The Holy Ruler's figure appeared; upon entering the great hall, he gave a slight bow to Emperor Yong Sheng—not a grand salute—but addressed himself not as a minister, but as the old man.

He is a descendant of the Sage, possessing the right not to be called a minister.

The Sage is not a subject, nor are his descendants.

He enjoys far too great privileges.

"We scholars request an audience with the Holy Ruler."

"We students request an audience with the Holy Ruler."

The next moment, inside the great hall, all the literati spoke together, bowing deeply to the Holy Ruler, even Su Wenjing could not help but bow.

This is the influence and status of the Kong family.

Any scholar, upon seeing the Holy Ruler, must perform the grand salute; the respect is not for the Holy Ruler but for Confucius.

Without Confucius, there would be no Confucian‑Daoist thought; without that thought, people are not people, things are not things—this is the core.

As Confucian‑Daoist students, they naturally must respect Confucius and the Kong family.

This is the benefit of one person's attainment lifting all his chickens and dogs to heaven.

The merits of Confucius cannot be described in words; a Sage establishes the heart of heaven and earth, elucidating the Great Dao.

To speak bluntly, if Confucius himself came today, Gu Jin Nian would definitely give him face, even if he himself suffered grievance, because Confucius founded Confucian‑Daoist thought.

But Gu Jin Nian believes even more that Confucius would not protect his own descendants; he would uphold righteousness even against kin.

Only the Kong descendants do not know how to evaluate.

People of each era differ; just like in Da Xia, the older generation of dukes and princes fought with all their might for the people of the world.

But what about the descendants of dukes and princes? Without this ideological awareness, they contend for power and profit, enjoying brocade and jade — this is their goal.

Just like this Kong Yu.

Put plainly, it's just that from birth one was too fortunate, being pampered by everyone around as if the stars surround the moon.

Then they become ever more inflated, while in order to secure their position and make the Kong Family even more stable, they curry favor with people from other countries, yet they care nothing for the feelings of the Da Xia Dynasty.

They take advantage and still want to swallow everything.

This is typical of such thinking; now having encountered a tough obstacle, it has turned out this way.

Therefore, upon the Holy Ruler's arrival, Gu Jin Nian did not show respect; instead, he calmly looked on.

In the great hall.

Emperor Yong Sheng gazed upon all this, feeling no displeasure, but rather wearing a smile.

"Holy Ruler, no need for courtesy."

Emperor Yong Sheng spoke.

As his words fell, the Holy Ruler immediately straightened his back and turned his gaze toward Kong Yu.

"Unfilial son!" he shouted, rebuking Kong Yu.

His voice thundered; Kong Yu's face turned deathly pale, yet he dared not speak, lowering his head in silent silence.

"Father had you come to the Da Xia Capital to celebrate the poetry gathering; yet you, for private gain, contend with others for superiority."

"This is simply a disgrace to the Kong Family."

"It's because I've indulged you these years; get back to the manor, and before the ancestral holy statue, kneel in punishment for seven days and seven nights."

The Holy Ruler spoke aloud, his voice booming, blaming Kong Yu; as soon as he entered, he gave the impression of righteousness overriding kinship.

But once he finished speaking, everyone understood what he meant.

Still under protection.

Perhaps the Holy Ruler is indeed rebuking Kong Yu; this emotion cannot be faked, but the biggest problem is what? Now it is required that Kong Yu kneel and kowtow, bowing his head to Gu Jin Nian.

But after the Holy Ruler finished saying this, it was to have Kong Yu kneel before the holy statue.

Kneeling before Confucius' statue, even if for ten days and ten nights, would not harm one's reputation; instead, it would earn the praise of one who corrects his mistakes.

But if one kneels to Gu Jin Nian, that is no small matter.

High, or rather the Holy Ruler is high.

Easily done, it will resolve this dispute.

But, as the Holy Ruler spoke in this way.

Gu Jin Nian's voice sounded out.

"Holy Ruler, how you punish him is of no concern to us juniors; it's just that the earlier bet hasn't ended yet—after he fulfills his promise, then punish him as you wish."

Gu Jin Nian spoke, looking at the Holy Ruler as he said this.

As soon as these words were spoken, the Holy Ruler showed no silence, no aversion; instead, his expression grew gentle.

Gazing at Gu Jin Nian.

"Young friend, are you the heir of the Gu Family?"

"Just now, while I was out, I saw this marvel of the ages."

"Old man, I am astonished; young friend, you possess the talent of a sage, and at such a young age you already have such ability, filling me with deep admiration."

"Yu'er, what you have done today is indeed wrong; moreover, a gentleman's word is as hard to retract as four horses."

"However, this matter ultimately caused no great effect; if the heir loses, I will certainly step forward to put an end to the farce."

"If the heir does not believe, one can simply ask someone to inquire of the heart."

The Holy Ruler spoke thus; his words were utterly righteous.

Especially the last sentence, which is downright laughable.

Can one inquire of the heart?

He is the Holy Ruler, who very likely has already broken through to the Half-Saint realm, a Half-Saint of heaven and earth—who could inquire of his heart?

Even Su Wenjing could not do that, could he?

Moreover, even if what the Holy Ruler said is true, so what?

If I lose, Kong Yu forces me to kneel and apologize; if I refuse to kneel and apologize, at an impasse, the Holy Ruler steps in to stop the farce.

What does such a result represent? It represents that all under heaven will praise the Kong Family for being reasonable, not overbearing, acting steadily, possessing the bearing of sages.

And what about me? All under heaven will mock me for saying I cannot do it, despite being the grandson of a duke, the heir of Da Xia, going back on my word, losing face.

Put another way, if I lose, no matter the result, it will not affect the Kong Family at all, and the Kong Family can wholly interpret it from the best angle to increase its reputation.

Just like now, clearly I have won, yet the other side can find all these excuses and reasons.

For a moment, I actually felt as if I were in the wrong.

And indeed, I felt as if I were being overbearing, unyielding in the right.

This is the power of literati.

Any matter, as long as he wants to speak of it in a good light, can be explained clearly.

If he wants to speak of it in a bad light, even if you jump into the Yellow River you cannot wash it clean.

Of course, the greatest problem is that the Kong Family controls public opinion, and controls the mouths of all scholars under heaven.

This is why Emperor Yong Sheng does not exterminate the Kong Family.

This is also why the Gu Family, despite having a great grudge against the Kong Family, is powerless.

The endless chatter—can you block it?

Moreover, the present situation has also been invisibly resolved by the Holy Ruler.

If Gu Jin Nian continues to demand that Kong Yu apologize, that would be overbearing.

If you don't demand it, I can't swallow this breath; it will create a grudge.

Impressive.

Really impressive.

But mainly it's because the other party is the Holy Ruler; if it were anyone else, it would be useless.

"Senior, I respect you as the Holy Ruler, so I won't argue too much."

"But today, Kong Yu harbors ill will toward me; as a junior, I cannot simply let this go."

Gu Jin Nian is very direct.

He simply won't give face.

Today he must kneel and apologize; otherwise his heart will be unsettled, and his thoughts will not flow.

Upon saying this,

Many people frowned, instinctively thinking Gu Jin Nian was somewhat overbearing.

The Kong family members furrowed their brows even more; in their view, the Holy Ruler himself has spoken, yet you're still here being overbearing—isn't that a bit excessive? But the Holy Ruler showed no change in expression; instead, he smiled slightly and said.

"This statement is mistaken."

"Crown Prince, human nature is inherently good at birth; Kong Yu is ultimately a descendant of Confucius, thus fundamentally kind-hearted; the grudge between you and him is ultimately just a matter of face."

"There is some impulsiveness and intensity; I understand this, Crown Prince. Please rest assured: today I will return and certainly punish Kong Yu severely, and the Kong Family's Holy Realm will also commence. If you do not disdain, you may visit my Kong Manor to experience the sage's principles and soon establish your voice."

The Holy Ruler was not angry; on the contrary, he was very courteous, even bringing out sage theory to explain himself to Gu Jin Nian.

However.

Gu Jin Nian shook his head.

Looking at the Holy Ruler, he spoke slowly.

"Senior, you are mistaken."

"I believe that human nature is inherently evil at birth; Kong Yu targets me, whether for profit or to save face, but he already harbors the intent to put me to death."

"I am not a sage, nor do I possess a sage's realm; today's grudge will be repaid today, and when I become a sage in the future, my mind will be broad."

Gu Jin Nian won't have any of that.

"What's this talk about innate goodness? Bringing this up is ridiculous."

"Are you kidding? But as soon as these words were spoken, the great hall instantly erupted in an uproar."

"What did he just say?"

"Human nature is inherently evil at birth?"

"Young friend Jin Nian, don't speak nonsense; these are the sage's words, which must not be defied."

"Young friend Jin Nian, your talent is outstanding; we understand that, but how can you slander the sage's words?"

In an instant, the great hall boiled over; all scholars involuntarily frowned, even some Great Scholars who somewhat supported Gu Jin Nian couldn't help but frown tightly.

All because Gu Jin Nian said the wrong thing.

Even Su Wenjing couldn't help but speak.

"Jin Nian, these words must not be spoken rashly; Holy Ruler, Crown Prince, being young and vigorous, some words should not be taken as truth."

Su Wenjing spoke.

What Gu Jin Nian just said could be big or small; taken lightly, it's just a childish spat—voicing dissatisfaction with a couple of fallacies is quite normal.

Taken seriously, this is a dispute between schools; nobody dares to touch this, not even Su Wenjing would dare to meddle.

At this moment.

Even the Eternal Prosperity Great Emperor couldn't help but speak.

"Jin Nian, not yet of age, speaking angry words—Jin Nian, choose your words carefully."

The Eternal Prosperity Great Emperor also spoke.

This is enough to prove that what Gu Jin Nian just said is highly problematic.

The talented individuals of the Fuyu Dynasty had prepared how to criticize, but upon hearing the Eternal Prosperity Great Emperor speak thus, they simply gave up.

The Holy Ruler smiled faintly.

Gu Jin Nian's response in this manner counts as a great help to him.

"Young friend, the sage's intent must not be defied."

"Alright, let's settle this matter like this."

"After I finish punishing Yu'er, I will let him come pay a visit and apologize to the Crown Prince."

The Holy Ruler doesn't care about Gu Jin Nian's few angry words; it's irrelevant, and he has no need to quibble with Gu Jin Nian.

Instead, he appears magnanimous, showing his broad-mindedness.

Moreover, the purpose of coming today is to defuse the crisis.

However.

Just when everyone thought Gu Jin Nian had nothing left to say.

His voice sounded again.

No.

Why must the sage's words not be defied?

We scholars are originally meant to learn the sage's reasoning, thereby contemplating new principles; as heaven and earth change, nothing is eternal—even the sage's words have times when they are appropriate and times when they are not.

I admire Confucius's words, but that does not mean I endorse them.

The sage says human nature is inherently good at birth, but I believe human nature is inherently evil at birth.

Gu Jin Nian continued speaking.

The sage founded a discipline, seeking a direction for all scholars, but this does not mean that what the sage says is necessarily correct.

If it is correct, then why can't everyone become a sage? Why are there still so many wars? Furthermore, because of law, people are made.

Every dynasty is different; for example, in wartime years, the common people can't even fill their stomachs, and you're still here expounding Confucian-Daoist thought?

Or perhaps, you're about to starve to death, and then someone comes and says, 'You have food, I don't; you eat in front of me—are you still a gentleman?' If you truly are a gentleman, you should first ask me whether I have eaten.

Will you give? Even sages don't give to you, yet you still give?

Therefore, the sages' words can be overturned; as long as the meaning you express is also toward goodness, there is no major problem.

However, Gu Jin Nian's reply is somewhat sharp, and indeed somewhat too rash.

「Impudent. 」

「You are truly bold. 」

「I respect you as the heir apparent, seeing your talent is outstanding, so I wouldn't want to say anything, but you, because of a momentary spirit of contention, dare to defame the sage? 」

「Sages must not be insulted, Gu Jin Nian, you are truly somewhat impudent. 」

「Gu Jin Nian, your poetry is indeed timeless; we admire it, but poetry is after all a branch of Confucian-Daoism, not the core. 」

「Such remarks involve academic disputes and also involve sages; you are not qualified and unfit to discuss. 」

「Unless one is a great scholar, one cannot speak of sages. 」

Voices rose one after another; many great scholars could not help but speak up.

Gu Jin Nian's words were too impudent; he actually overturned the sages' words, touching their greatest core.

If one does not speak now, it would imply approval or agreement—wouldn't that be betraying teacher and destroying ancestors?

Academic disputes are absolutely not merely about interests; the impact is huge, huge.

「Just because you can write two poems, do you really think you're different from others? 」

「Don't say that because you've written a few timeless poems; even if you wrote a hundred, a thousand, you still have no qualification to judge sages. 」

「This is the Holy Son? It's laughable; to actually defame a sage—if this person were in my Fuyu Dynasty, they wouldn't survive three days. 」

「No matter how good the poetry, it's merely a bit more talent; you have no sage in your heart, you don't understand the classics, and yet you rashly defame the sage—you're asking for death. 」

The talents of the Fuyu Dynasty also could not hold back.

At this moment they frenziedly insulted Gu Jin Nian.

Kong Yu, meanwhile, was delighted in his heart; originally this matter would have utterly ruined his reputation, but he didn't expect Gu Jin Nian to seek his own death.

It could be called a good game of chess, but Gu Jin Nian directly ruined it.

Kong Ping, standing aside, was filled with contempt in his heart.

Gu Jin Nian really is accustomed to arrogance and domineering behavior; he dares to say such things—does he truly not fear death? Academic dispute.

This is a matter of great importance; Confucius's scholarship, revered by scholars worldwide, thereafter the sages of a thousand autumns, of a hundred generations, of Heaven's Mandate, all are based on the scholarship of the sage of myriad generations, expounded upon, and thus become sages.

Since Confucius established Confucian-Daoism, there have also been many who attempted to overturn it, but the outcomes were all miserable.

Even to this day, some scholars have created different scholarships, but what is the result? Thunderous with little rain; they simply cannot stir up any waves.

Could it be that Gu Jin Nian today intends to be a mayfly shaking a tree?

Facing the crowd's reproach.

Gu Jin Nian was unmoved.

And the Holy Ruler still showed no anger.

But the smile on his face also faded somewhat.

「Heir apparent. 」

「You are impulsive. 」

「I know this matter; it is my son who is wrong, you harbor anger, old man I understand; today I can apologize on behalf of Yu'er to you. 」

「But the words just now, the heir apparent should apologize to the old man; sages must not be insulted, otherwise it will bring great trouble, and the old man can do nothing about it. 」

The Holy Ruler spoke openly.

A speech, which could be said to be not a single word wrong.

Pushing Gu Jin Nian into an extremely dangerous position; no matter what Gu Jin Nian does now, he will invite trouble.

「This matter ends here. 」

「Jin Nian, don't argue anymore. 」

Su Wenjing stepped forward, he grabbed Gu Jin Nian, and at a glance saw through what the Holy Ruler was thinking.

Therefore he stopped Gu Jin Nian, lest he be deceived.

However, Gu Jin Nian merely shook his head, looked at the other party, and spoke slowly.

「The student has not insulted the sage; he merely does not accept the sage's words. 」

「If one opposes the sage's words, that is insult. 」

「Are there still new scholarships under heaven? Do scholars still have new thoughts? 」

「The student believes that Confucius established Confucian-Daoism, achieving sages for myriad generations; he also personally said, feeling ashamed before the world's literati, cutting off the path of heaven and earth's literati. 」

「He even hopes that future generations will have new learning arise, adding brilliance to Confucian-Daoism. 」

「This is the sage's words, but now you, descendants of the Kong family, using the sage's sayings, cut off the path of the world's scholars; this is truly a heart deserving of punishment. 」

「If you believe that merely putting forward an opinion is insulting the sage, then let Gu Mou be guilty of insulting the sage. 」

Gu Jin Nian's face was calm.

What is scholarship, what is not scholarship.

「What is a sage, what is not a sage. 」

Confucius indeed said that he hoped later generations could carry forward Confucian learning, let Confucianism have different thoughts, different notions, a hundred flowers blooming; this is what he wished to see.

Not that everyone should daily take his books, recite them over and over, forever be influenced by him, and forever be confined within the sage's circle.

This is what a sage is.

These people are merely holding a chicken feather as a command arrow, seeking to consolidate their power and interests, suppressing dissent, and even beautifying it by claiming sages cannot be insulted. If a true sage were actually resurrected, the first thing they'd likely do is hack this lot to death.

Just saying that.

Su Wenjing couldn't help but sigh; he knew the matter was really settled.

At this moment.

Holy Ruler's face turned completely cold.

He gave kind advice and helped explain things for Gu Jin Nian everywhere, yet he never expected Gu Jin Nian would actually dare to insult the sage.

Moreover, being so blatant, he couldn't possibly contend with Gu Jin Nian; after all, he's a junior, and as Holy Ruler there's no need for him to do so.

But when it involves the sage, still his ancestor, he couldn't just smile and look at Gu Jin Nian.

Without propriety, one is not human.

A ruler without propriety is not a ruler.

At the beginning of human nature, goodness is innate; through all things, cultivating the vast righteous qi—this is the sage's words.

Gu Jin Nian, you're truly insolent; this old man today wants to hear what you mean by 'at the beginning of human nature, goodness is evil'.

Holy Ruler did not get angry; instead, his voice ice-cold, he rebuked Gu Jin Nian.

Bang.

In the next moment, the National Stabilizer Duke rose; his jade table before him shattered, his whole person extremely chilling, he walked straight to Gu Jin Nian's front.

His gaze fixedly stared at Holy Ruler.

Then he looked toward Gu Jin Nian and said.

Grandson.

As long as you speak up.

Let Grandfather whip him.

Grandfather now has him hung in the hall for whipping.

The National Stabilizer Duke really has a violent temper, not a bit of long-windedness.

Pointing at Holy Ruler, he gives no face at all.

Whatever damn Holy Ruler or not, if you piss him off, you'll die here today.

In an instant, the atmosphere suddenly became thick with the smell of gunpowder.

No one would have thought that Holy Ruler's arrival would not ease things but instead make them even bigger.

But Gu Jin Nian didn't use the old master.

Instead, he looked toward Holy Ruler.

He said in an extremely calm tone.

Since you wish to listen.

Then this heir will tell you.

After his words fell.

Immediately afterwards, he stood with hands behind his back, facing the opponent and spoke directly.

At the beginning of human nature, nature is evil; goodness is false.

People's nature: born with a love for profit; following it, they engage in contention and humility perishes; born with a love for evil; following it, they become vicious and loyalty perishes; born with ear and eye desires, a love for sounds and colors; following it, licentious chaos arises and propriety, righteousness, literature, and principles perish.

Thus, following human nature and emotions, one inevitably resorts to contention, violates principles and descends into violence. Therefore there must be the transformation of teacher models and the way of propriety and righteousness; only then can one practice humility, conform to reason, and return to order. Observing this, it is clear that human nature is evil and goodness is false.

Gu Jin Nian spoke.

This is Xunzi's learning.

The idea that human nature is inherently evil was also proposed by him.

This is also the only one who can be called a Grand Master at the Jixia Academy.

This notion, while not daring to say it overturns the sage's words, indeed has made people doubt the sage.

It lets scholars worldwide break free from the sage's circle and give birth to their own thoughts.

After Xunzi came the scene of a hundred schools flourishing together.

Simply because he liberated people's thinking, telling the world, whether sage or not, if you feel something is wrong, you can think for yourself.

Rather than just listening to what others say.

As for overturning the sage's words, Gu Jin Nian has little interest.

Academic disputes, rationalist scholarship—these things Gu Jin Nian temporarily does not want to touch.

But if you insist on arguing with me.

Then I'll argue with you to the end.

If anything happens, don't blame me.

Those who follow the teacher's model, accumulate literature, and practice propriety and righteousness are gentlemen.

Indulging in nature and emotions, allowing desires to grow, those who violate propriety and righteousness are petty people. Observing this, it is clear that human nature is evil and goodness is false.

Gu Jin Nian spoke the scriptural meaning in one breath.

Then he took a deep breath and glared angrily at the latter.

In a moment, everyone in the great hall fell silent.

Gu Jin Nian's exposition of the scriptural meaning was excellent; it sounded like it contained great principles and was elaborated in extreme detail.

This is erudition.

This is scriptural meaning.

No longer mere poetry and prose, but true Confucian-Daoist scriptural meaning.

How could Gu Jin Nian possibly understand such principles? All the Great Scholars' faces changed.

Poetry and prose, they were shocking, they were moving, but poetry and prose are ultimately a sideline, put plainly it's just a skill, merely a Confucian-Dao skill.

It cannot be considered the mainstream of Confucian Dao.

Only the classics and their meanings are the mainstream of Confucian Dao; they are scholarship, reasonable things, books that enable thinking—this is the mainstream Confucian Dao of the classics and their meanings.

Su Wenjing also showed a look of shock; he looked at Gu Jin Nian, never expecting that his own student hid himself so deeply.

Crack.

And just at that moment.

Above the firmament, thunder roared.

Dark clouds spread, the heavens and earth were engulfed in darkness.

At this moment, startling thunder appeared, tearing through the vast sky,

Buzz

Buzz

And just then, outside the Hall of the Literary Mind, some Pure Subtle voices sounded.

The next moment, a student's voice sounded.

"Oh no, the sage statue is trembling again."

The sound rang out, causing everyone in the great hall to stare in shock.

"Startling Sage Writing."

"This is the Startling Sage Writing."

A voice sounded, face full of disbelief, pointing at Gu Jin Nian's hand trembling slightly.

And Gu Jin Nian's voice sounded again.

Gazing at the Holy Ruler.

"May I ask, sir."

"Can you debate it?"
