Chapter 16: Filial Piety! Why Don

~6 min read 1,192 words

Fang Yifan’s deliberate provocation was clearly not meant to be whispered.

Besides, He Chen’s every move naturally draws attention.

So when Fang Yifan finished his taunt, the onlookers erupted in shock, unable to believe he’d dare do such a thing.

“No wonder they call him Fang Monkey! His guts are as bold as the Great Sage Equaling Heaven himself.”

“He just caused a scene at the assembly, and now he’s doing this again—he really thinks he can climb to heaven.”

“Didn’t you figure it out yet? This is just the sequel to what happened at the assembly. Fang Yifan faked fainting to avoid Li Tie’s revenge after falling, but He Chen somehow exposed him, making him get chased and beaten by his mom in front of everyone. How could he not want revenge?”

“So that’s why—but the parents haven’t even left yet, and he’s already retaliating? He’s way too impulsive.”

“If you’re not impulsive, are you even young? Fang Yifan’s the type who starts fighting at the slightest provocation. Besides, he’s even using the excuse of giving a gift—something expensive, too. This is pure money-slapping, classic rich-kid arrogance!”

“Not to mention yesterday’s clash—you forgot? Even though He Chen mainly targeted Ji Daoshao, Fang Yifan got caught in the crossfire too. And Fang Yifan loves dancing badly. That line ‘Stop fighting!’ probably hit him even deeper than you think.”

The murmurs among the crowd only made Fang Yifan feel more triumphant.

Indeed, the eyes of the masses are sharp.

He wasn’t deliberately targeting He Chen—he was just retaliating fairly after He Chen targeted him twice and humiliated him.

It’s absolutely not jealousy making me look monstrous or anything.

“Fang Yifan, are you crazy?” Du Tiantian stepped forward. Seeing Fang Yifan’s smug expression and He Chen’s silence, she assumed He Chen was too stunned to respond, so she mustered the courage to scold Fang Yifan.

“Sending something like this…”

“What’s wrong with it?” Fang Yifan retorted: “Just tell me—isn’t He Chen always practicing Crane Qi and Turtle Breathing, dreaming of living as long as a turtle? Even his balloon dreams are about crane longevity and turtle years. I’m being generous giving him such a valuable, authentic money turtle—isn’t that thoughtful?”

“That money turtle was the gift you gave Teacher Li yesterday—he threw it straight away and scolded you so badly you had to take it back,” Du Tiantian exposed. “Now you’re giving it to He Chen? That’s clearly malicious.”

“How exactly is it malicious?” Fang Yifan smirked. “Go ahead, explain.”

“...” Du Tiantian fell silent.

The negative connotations tied to turtles were understood by everyone, but no one dared say them aloud.

Too vulgar!

“See? You can’t even say it!” Fang Yifan gloated. “Besides, if it weren’t a real treasure, would we have carefully picked it out to give to Teacher Li?”

As he spoke, he noticed He Chen still staring at the turtle, as if still reeling from the shock. He grinned wider, chuckling: “Look, He Chen’s so delighted he doesn’t even know what to say.”

“Are you sure this is an authentic money turtle?” He Chen finally tore his gaze from the palm-sized turtle and fixed it on the bouncing Fang Yifan.

“Absolutely!” Fang Yifan puffed out his chest. “My dad spends all day studying this stuff. Our house is full of birds, flowers, fish, and insects—it could pass for a mini pet market.”

“He picked this one specially for Teacher Li’s birthday, worried she wouldn’t recognize its value, so he made me remind her it’s the most authentic money turtle possible.”

“She didn’t want it, so now I’m giving it to you. It’s like offering a sword to a hero—a turtle to a turtle lord. May your cultivation flourish, become a divine turtle, and live a thousand, ten thousand years!”

Seeing Fang Yifan actually twist those crude insults into polite words, Du Tiantian worriedly glanced at He Chen.

Fang Yifan could act like an impulsive kid, but He Chen had already openly defied teachers and openly mocked, “My district chief father.” Could he really tolerate such humiliation?

“Do you think you’re funny?” He Chen looked down at Fang Yifan like he was an idiot.

“I’m the Prince of Humor!” Fang Yifan felt something was off, but under everyone’s eyes, he couldn’t lose face, so he kept grinning.

Then he saw He Chen pull out his phone and start dialing. He froze, then sneered: “What? Calling for backup? Tattling to the teacher?”

“110? I’m reporting someone for illegally trading a nationally protected animal—the money turtle,” He Chen said into the phone, making everyone go pale.

“Holy shit!” The crowd burst into shocked exclamations, stunned by He Chen’s move.

What kind of divine operation is this—calling the cops at the drop of a hat?

This isn’t tattling—it’s a full-blown report!

“Yes, I confirmed it repeatedly with the seller—they were certain it was an authentic money turtle, bought at great expense to gift to Teacher Li...”

“You, you...” Fang Yifan was speechless, staring blankly as He Chen confirmed the details with the police dispatch and hung up. He stammered for a long time, unable to form a single complete sentence.

Is this really worth calling the police over? It’s just high school kids bickering!

This is ridiculous!

In a daze, Fang Yifan suddenly had a strange thought.

He’d always been called Fang Monkey by his childhood friend Qiao Yingzi, and just now someone compared him to the Great Sage Equaling Heaven—he’d been secretly thrilled.

After all, who doesn’t love the Great Sage? Who didn’t dream of being him as a child?

But now, he vaguely felt that the man standing before him—He Chen—might be the true Great Sage Equaling Heaven.

“Keep laughing! Why stop now?” He Chen smiled at Fang Yifan, who couldn’t laugh anymore. “You’re so filial! You’re clearly the type who fights with Ji Daoshao—both of you are masterpieces of filial piety! I’d call you the Dragon and Phoenix of Filial Piety!”

You know your dad hasn’t left yet—you don’t want him wasting police time, right?

That’s good!

Smile even harder!

Don’t worry, nothing serious will happen. Your dad studied law—he wouldn’t break the law.

Even if he did, it’s fine—it’s called more easily reformable.

It means law enforcement officers like lawyers and police, when they commit crimes, get lighter sentences because, compared to ignorant commoners, they’re more refined and thus more capable of reform, so their punishment is reduced again and again.

Even being caught on camera having sex in the workplace because he was “attracted by the nation’s flowers” can lead to acquittal—let alone just trading protected animals.”

Seeing everyone’s confused, disbelieving expressions, he feigned sudden realization and slapped his forehead: “Sorry, my mistake! I forgot this isn’t America! I was just quoting America’s laws—extremely friendly to Fang Yifan’s dad!”

Here, breaking the law while knowing it’s illegal means harsher punishment.

People always say Chinese law students envy their foreign counterparts—I used to doubt it.

Now I’ve seen the light—I believe it completely.

Does your dad in law enforcement spend all day fantasizing about being an American lawyer, so much so he breaks the law and wants everyone to know?”
