Chapter 286: Nothing, Just Calling You
Yun Li acted as if she hadn't seen Canglang coughing until his hands were trembling slightly. She lowered her eyelids and asked in a less-than-friendly tone, "Are you a beastman of the Giant Tribe?"
Hearing this, a chill swiftly flickered through the depths of Canglang's eyes. "No."
He wasn't a beastman of the Giant Tribe?
Yun Li couldn't help but furrow her brows. This answer surprised her so much that she instinctively wanted to press him, asking which tribe he belonged to if not the Giant Tribe.
But before she could get the words out, Canglang's next sentence made her brow twitch sharply.
"After all, in the eyes of those beastmen, I'm probably not even considered a person."
In the eyes of the Giant Tribe's beastmen, even if a Beast Slave shared the same father or the same mother as them, as long as they carried the blood of a Beast Slave, they were still a Beast Slave, forever forbidden from calling themselves beastmen.
"But you... aren't you a Blue Rank Beastman?"
Yun Li found it somewhat absurd. "Your tribe treats you like this—don't you feel any resentment?"
"Resentment?"
Canglang looked as if he had heard something amusing. "Do you think a beastman like me is allowed to resent them?"
The corner of Yun Li's mouth twitched slightly. "It's perfectly normal to feel resentment."
So what kind of godforsaken place was their tribe? It was one thing for Beast Slaves to have no rights, but even a Blue Rank Beastman, whose strength was second only to a Purple Rank Beast Person, apparently had no rights either—couldn't even harbor a bit of resentment.
A mocking arc curled at the corner of Canglang's lips. "Right, even you can understand that, yet they deliberately pretend to see nothing."
Yun Li didn't want to delve deeper into this topic with him. This male had been so crushed by his tribe that who knew if his personality had long since twisted.
And Yun Li was neither a little sun nor a beastman overflowing with sympathy. What did she care if Canglang had suffered in the first half of his life? It wasn't her fault, so she wasn't about to give him any psychological counseling.
The only reason she hadn't rolled her eyes at him for kidnapping her was that she was at a disadvantage. If her Beast Husband had been by her side, she would have definitely sneered at him, saying that a Blue Rank Beastman treated like a Beast Slave by his own tribe and still not running away, still staying in that tribe—was it because he'd been a Beast Slave for so long that he'd forgotten he was also a beastman?
"So why did you kidnap me? Aren't you afraid of dying here?"
Hearing her last words, Canglang suddenly laughed. "If I'm going to die, you'll probably have to die with me."
Yun Li's gaze toward the male instantly turned fierce, but she quickly reined in her emotions and asked in a flat tone, "Where are we?"
Canglang propped his chin on his hand, looking at Yun Li with a playful expression. "What makes you think I'd tell you something so important?"
Tell her where they were now? So she could run off on her own once she found the chance?
Although Canglang could poison Yun Li to force her into submission, considering his plans afterward, he thought this idea could be saved for later, when Yun Li insisted on opposing him.
So what else was there to say between them?
Yun Li had been ignored by Canglang for several days. From the initial rage and calm, to the later feigned resignation as she prepared to play along with him, it turned out Canglang seemed to see right through her. Apart from asking what she wanted to eat every day, no matter how she tried to strike up a conversation, he always appeared weak and sickly, barely exchanging a few words with her—it was infuriating.
Sometimes Yun Li really wanted to just lunge at him and see if she could take his life while he was ill.
"Yun Li."
Just as Yun Li had given up on talking to Canglang, he suddenly took an interest. "I heard that when your tribe captures live Beast Slaves, you either kill them outright or drive them out of the tribe. Do you hate the existence of Beast Slaves that much?"
Yun Li leaned against the cold stone wall and closed her eyes. "You've been in the Silver Eagle Tribe for so long—isn't it easy to find out the answer to that question?"
Didn't he already know whether she hated Beast Slaves? Why was he asking her this now?
"I'm just curious why you hate Beast Slaves."
Canglang himself couldn't say why he cared about this question. Even if he didn't ask Yun Li, he could still find the answer. Hating Beast Slaves didn't need a reason—many beastmen instinctively felt disgust just knowing such beings existed. It wasn't that they pitied Beast Slaves, but rather they saw them as a disgrace among beastmen, something that shouldn't exist in this world.
And that was without even mentioning that the Beast Slaves captured alive by the Silver Eagle Tribe all had the blood of their clansmen on their hands. Even if some Beast Slaves argued that they had been forced, the beastmen of the Silver Eagle Tribe had just experienced the pain of losing their kin—how could they look at Beast Slaves without any resentment?
But he just wanted to know Yun Li's view on Beast Slaves. Perhaps because of that casual remark she'd made—"Ultimately, the existence of Beast Slaves is due to the environment and the greed of some beastmen." He had never expected to hear such words from a young beastman who had barely left her tribe. It felt novel, and it made her seem very different from other beastmen.
"There's no reason. Hate is hate."
Yun Li really didn't like dealing with beastmen like Canglang. He was too good at seeing through a person from small details, which made the sharp-minded Yun Li feel, every time she talked too much with him, as if she had no secrets before him, leaving her feeling very insecure.
Canglang smiled. "True. If I were you, I'd probably say the same."
Hearing this, Yun Li couldn't help but open her eyes and glance in Canglang's direction. She thought that if this male hadn't been born a Beast Slave, he would have been the kind of person who stood out in a crowd.
After all, even as a Beast Slave, he was already so cunning; there was no way he would become dull just because he grew up as a normal beastman.
"Yun Li."
"What?"
"Nothing, just calling you."
As soon as Canglang said this, he unsurprisingly earned a sidelong glare from Yun Li.
Yet, watching the female make that face at him, he just laughed. His laughter was irritating, and Yun Li frowned, staring at him like he was an idiot.
Laugh, laugh, laugh! What the hell was there to laugh about!
While the atmosphere between Yun Li and Canglang was relatively harmonious, over at the Silver Eagle Tribe, because they had yet to find any trace of Yun Li, a group of beastmen were arguing incessantly before Jicheng and the Priest. The debate was all about how to deal with Chun.
Mu Qing sat in a corner, his eyes slightly lowered. He hadn't said a word since entering, because both he and Ji Xuan, who usually seemed to put the tribe first, had already decided on Chun's fate before they arrived. No matter how much these beastmen argued, Chun's ending was already sealed.
"Enough, stop arguing."
Jicheng had never imagined that a beastman in the tribe would harm a clansman to the point of life-and-death uncertainty over an outsider. He thought such things only happened in small tribes, where the harsh environment drove them to do unbelievable things just to live a little better.
