Chapter 29: Sudden Accident
Mengrou! Mengrou!
It's Mengrou! I finally got to see the real person!
Wife! Look at me here!
Various shouts rose and fell, and some people held light boards bearing Yun Mengrou's portrait, pushing forward hard, trying to get a little closer to the stage.
Jiang Feng stood behind the crowd, startled by the commotion, and couldn't help raising an eyebrow.
Who is this girl? How is she so popular?
Before he could think further, the stage lights suddenly dimmed, and only a single spotlight shone on the backstage entrance.
Then a girl in a white gauze dress slowly stepped out, her long hair curled over her shoulders with a few fine silver glints at the tips, light makeup on her face, eyes incredibly lively, and when she smiled, two tiny dimples appeared at the corners of her mouth. "Whoa…"
Jiang Feng muttered subconsciously, "She's really beautiful, even more pleasing to look at than those TV stars."
He doesn't usually follow the entertainment world, and he had never heard the name Yun Mengrou before.
But he had to admit, the girl's looks were truly striking.
The cheers from the audience grew louder, and Yun Mengrou bowed to the crowd, her soft voice coming through the microphone.
"Thank you all for coming. Today I'm bringing you a song called Starlight, hope you'll like it."
As soon as the words finished, the accompaniment music started, and Yun Mengrou grasped the microphone and began to sing.
Her voice was clear, like a spring flowing over stone, and the audience below fell silent, gently swaying their glow sticks to the rhythm.
Jiang Feng didn't rush away; he leaned against the nearby railing, listening to the song.
But after only a couple of lines, he suddenly furrowed his brows, his eyes fixed tightly on Yun Mengrou on stage—something was off.
She had been fine when she bowed earlier; why did her complexion turn a bit pale once she started singing?
Moreover, the hand holding the microphone seemed to clench its knuckles involuntarily, and she occasionally lifted her hand to touch her chest subconsciously; the motion was light and fast like an illusion, but Jiang Feng saw it clearly.
It wasn't a sign of nervousness; it looked more like… she was feeling unwell?
Jiang Feng felt a doubt rise inside him and took two steps forward, wanting a clearer view.
But just as he moved forward a few steps, someone behind him shoved him hard, and a boy with a coarse voice shouted.
"Hey! What's your deal? Can you even queue? Everyone's standing properly at the back, so what gives you the right to cut in?"
Jiang Feng glanced back; the one who pushed him was a young man in his twenties.
He held a Yun Mengrou light board, his face flushed bright red, clearly a devoted fan.
People nearby were drawn by the commotion, turning to look, and someone echoed, "Exactly, if you want a close look at Mengrou you still have to follow the rules. Cutting in line isn't a skill!"
Jiang Feng furrowed his brow and explained, "I'm not cutting in line; I'm watching that woman on stage. She looks a bit off, her complexion isn't good, and I wanted to get closer to see what's happening."
The moment he said that, the young man sneered and rolled his eyes dramatically.
"Ugh! If you want a close look at Yun Mengrou, just say so, instead of making up lame excuses. Want any respect? What do you mean she's off? Mengrou was clearly in great shape, sang beautifully just now; you're just looking for an excuse to ride her hype, maybe even try to rush up and talk to her!"
A bespectacled girl beside them also nodded, her tone dripping with contempt.
"Exactly, you'd give up your face just to chase a star, then claim she's off. I think you're the one who's off! Get back to the back, don't block us from seeing Mengrou!"
"I'm not lying."
Jiang Feng held his patience and said another sentence, his gaze still fixed on Yun Mengrou.
When she hit the high notes earlier, she clearly paused; although she quickly covered it up, fine beads of sweat already dotted her forehead, her grip on the microphone tightened, and her knuckles turned white.
But the people around didn't believe him at all; each thought he was making up lies just to cut in line.
Jiang Feng didn't argue further, but he also didn't just walk away, after all, lives were at stake.
So he simply shifted to the side, found a slightly higher step and stood on it, allowing a clearer view of the stage.
At that moment, a little girl in a pink dress suddenly appeared in the audience, holding a beautifully packaged bouquet of sunflowers, and excitedly walked onto the stage.
Yun Mengrou stopped singing at that moment and smiled gently at the little girl.
The girl clutched the flowers tightly, and when she reached Yun Mengrou, her trembling hands shook, her voice tinged with sobbing.
"Mengrou sis! I… I've liked you for a long time! Since you entered the audition I've been a fan; this bouquet represents my support, you must keep getting better!"
"Thank you, I've received your sentiment, truly grateful."
Yun Mengrou bent down, took the bouquet of sunflowers with both hands, gently patted the girl's shoulder, her smile especially gentle.
But the instant Yun Mengrou's fingers touched the bouquet, Jiang Feng's complexion changed instantly, and he shouted loudly toward the stage.
"Put it down! That flower's problematic! Don't touch it!"
His voice directly drowned out the music and cheers.
The audience below were startled by his outburst, turning their heads toward him.
The flower‑offering girl also froze, looking at Jiang Feng in confusion.
Yun Mengrou on stage also heard Jiang Feng's words and was momentarily stunned.
She still held the bouquet, looking puzzled toward Jiang Feng in the audience, seemingly not grasping why he said that. It might have been an unconscious reaction.
She lowered her head to glance at the flowers, her nose involuntarily drifting toward the petals, as if to smell their scent.
"Don't smell!"
Jiang Feng tried to shout again, but it was already too late.
Yun Mengrou just brought the flower to her nose, inhaled, and her complexion suddenly changed.
Her already pale face instantly turned completely colorless, eyes bulging, both hands clutching her own throat, breathing becoming rapid, a hoarse sound emanating from her throat as if something blocked her airway.
The sunflower in her hand fell straight to the ground.
Immediately after, Yun Mengrou's body swayed, her legs went weak, and she collapsed onto the stage!
"Ah!!!"
A wave of terrified screams erupted from the audience.
Jiang Feng hurriedly pushed through the crowd toward the stage; he had already sensed something was wrong with Yun Mengrou.
It seems now that she must have asthma; something in that bouquet must have irritated her.
He ran while looking toward the stage; Yun Mengrou lay on the Ground, her chest heaving violently, her lips turning purple, clearly having difficulty breathing, the situation extremely critical.
Just as Jiang Feng was about to step onto the stage, two people suddenly blocked him.
"Who are you? You may not enter the stage!"
"Move aside, she's about to die, I can save her!"
