Chapter 636

~6 min read 1,192 words

Jiang Feng leaned against the corridor wall, arms crossed, posture casual, his head lowered as he looked at Lin Yanqian's eyes, which bore a thirst for knowledge and longing.

He remained silent for a few breaths, then the corner of his mouth twitched slightly, revealing a half‑smile.

"You want to become my disciple?"

Lin Yanqian froze.

"This guy, how arrogant! Just opening his mouth makes people become his disciple."

Her mouth opened slightly, wanting to say something, but Jiang Feng didn't give her a chance to speak.

He looked her over from head to toe, his gaze sweeping from the top of her head down to her feet, then back up again.

His gaze lingered for a moment on the outline of her bones, then paused briefly on the faint aura surrounding her, after which he spoke slowly.

"Although you're a bit older, your bone structure isn't bad."

Lin Yanqian's brows furrowed.

"A bit older?"

"You're the one who's old!"

"She's only twenty‑seven, the prime age in the medical field—who could earn a doctorate at such a young age?"

"Who would dare call themselves young and promising!"

"This guy actually says he's old!"

"It's really impolite."

Jiang Feng ignored her changing expression and continued, speaking with a hint of disdain.

"Well… if you're willing to become my disciple, I can reluctantly consider taking you on as a nominal disciple."

As soon as he said that, Lin Yanqian's eyes widened completely.

She stood there, mouth agape, as if she had heard something out of the Arabian Nights.

She was the top graduate of the Imperial Medical University, having studied under a professor of National Hand caliber, and her résumé alone could make anyone feel reverent.

She was also the eldest daughter of the Tianzhou Lin Family; although the Lin Family wasn't as illustrious as the Four Great Families of the Capital, it was still a prominent house in the southern part of the empire.

From childhood she lived in luxury, raised by countless admirers; anyone who could become her teacher would have to be a renowned physician and a scholarly authority of the age.

Yet the man before her, opening his mouth, said he wanted to take her as a nominal disciple?

"And it's only a nominal disciple!"

"Not even a formal disciple!"

Lin Yanqian's eyebrows rose, her lips moved, and a surge of anger welled up from her chest, almost bursting forth…

"What gives you the right?"

But when the words reached her lips, she suddenly stopped.

She recalled the scene she had just witnessed in the ward.

The patient whom medicine had judged to be near death came back to life the moment he raised his hand.

The vital signs that she could barely sustain despite exhausting all her knowledge recovered health under his palm.

He is not a medical authority, nor an academic authority.

His methods surpass any known medical domain.

The things absent from textbooks, the miracles unattainable in labs, the impossibilities she thought she would never see in her lifetime— in his hands they are as simple as drinking water and eating rice.

Such a person, opening his mouth, says he wants to take her as a nominal disciple.

Lin Yanqian's mouth twitched, and she felt she had come to a crossroads of dilemma.

On one side lies the pride and confidence she has built since childhood; on the other side lies the undeniable fact she has witnessed with her own eyes.

She wants to uphold her dignity, but she also knows that if she refuses this opportunity, she may never get a second chance in her lifetime.

At the moment she hesitated, Ma Jian somehow had gotten out of bed; although he still wore a patient gown, he looked energetic, showing none of the weakness one would expect after a recent physical examination.

He clung to the doorframe, half his body protruding, glanced at Lin Yanqian then at Jiang Feng, and finally his gaze settled on Lin Yanqian, his face full of envy.

"You've really struck it lucky."

Ma Jian's voice carried an undisguised envy and admiration.

"Being Jiang Ge's disciple is nothing short of a tremendous honor for you!"

Lin Yanqian turned her head to look at him, her eyes questioning.

Ma Jian stepped out from behind the doorframe, walked up to Lin Yanqian, and spoke earnestly.

"You might not know how formidable Jiang Ge is. I've followed him for so long, I've seen the things he does—each one, if spoken aloud, would scare people to death. Teaching you a single move or half a technique would be enough to last you a lifetime."

Lin Yanqian looked at him, then at Jiang Feng.

That man still leaned against the wall, arms crossed, expression flat, as if he were waiting for an answer he already knew.

His eyes held no anticipation, no urging, only a careless nonchalance.

Lin Yanqian took a deep breath.

She lowered her head, looking at the stack of reports in her hand, the numbers on those papers still vividly imprinted in her mind.

She recalled the nights she had stayed up to treat Ma Jian, the data she had looked up, the remedies she had tried—all her efforts combined could not compare to a single beam of light from Jiang Feng's raised hand.

If she refused this opportunity, she would regret it for the rest of her life.

She lifted her head, looked at Jiang Feng, gritted her teeth, her voice a little hoarse but each word clear.

"I… am willing to become your disciple."

After Lin Yanqian spoke those words, she felt as if a burden had been lifted from her whole body, yet also as if she had taken on a new load.

Her heart held an indescribable feeling, like she had let go of something while also anticipating something else. She looked at Jiang Feng, waiting for his response.

Jiang Feng looked at her, finally lowering the arms he had crossed before his chest.

He straightened his body, left the wall, and walked to stand before Lin Yanqian. He lowered his head to look at her, his gaze lingering on her face for a moment, then he spoke. His tone remained as casual as before, but now it carried a touch more sincerity.

Registered Disciple. Remembrance, it's registered. If performance is good in the future, maybe can be promoted to Formal Disciple.

Lin Yanqian's mouth corner twitched, but she still nodded.

Jiang Feng turned and walked toward the ward, took two steps then stopped again, without turning back, the sound came from the Front.

"Then follow me for now. Ma Jian, let's go."

Ma Jian was stunned.

Ah? Go? Where to?

"Discharge." Jiang Feng's voice carried a Silk Laughter, "You said you wanted to be discharged, didn't you? Now you can."

Ma Jian's face instantly broke into a big grin, he quickly caught up, took two steps, turned back and waved at Lin Yanqian.

"Hey, newcomer, catch up!"

Lin Yanqian was dazed for a moment, resolutely, she took off her work ID and threw it onto the hospital bed.

「Coming!」

After saying that, she quickly caught up with the two.
